And the song that I just played was by Josef Hofmann.

And Hofmann is a Polish pianist and composer of the late 19th century,

and he's widely considered one of the greatest pianists of all time.

I have another piece that I'd like to play for you.

သင်တို့အတွက် တီးပြချင်တဲ့ နောက်ထပ် တေးသွားတစ်ခုရှိတယ်။

It's called "Abegg Variations," by Robert Schumann,

Robert Schumann ရဲ့ "Abegg Variations" လို့ ခေါ်ပါတယ်​ေ

a German 19th-century composer.

၁၉ ရာစု ဂျာမန် တေးရေးဆရာပါ။

The name "Abegg" is actually A-B-E-G-G,

"Abegg" ဆိုတဲ့ အမည်က A-B-E-G-G ပါ။

and that's the main theme in the melody.

ဒါက တေးသွားထဲက အဓိက သံစဉ်ပါ။

(Plays the notes A, B, E, G and G)

That comes from the last name of one of Schumann's female friends.

But he wrote that for his wife.

So actually, if you listen carefully,

there are supposed to be five variations on this Abegg theme.

It's written around 1834,

so even though it's old, I hope you'll like it.

Now comes the part that I hate.

Well, because Mr. Anderson told me

ကဲ ဘာလို့လဲဆိုတော့ Mr. Anderson က ဒီအပိုင်းက

that this session is called "Sync and Flow,"

"Sync and Flow" လို့ ခေါ်တယ်လို့ ကျွန်မကို ပြောခဲ့လို့ပါ။

I was wondering, "What do I know that these geniuses don't?"

ကျွန်မ တွေးနေမိတာက "ဒီပါရမီရှင်တွေ မသိတာ ကျွန်မ ဘာသိလဲ"ပေါ့။

So, I'll talk about musical composition,

ဒီတော့ ဂီတ သီဖွဲ့မှုတွေအကြောင်း ပြောမယ်၊

even though I don't know where to start.

ဘယ်ကနေ စရမှန်း မသိတောင်မှပေါ့။

How do I compose?

ကျွန်မ ဘယ်လို သီဖွဲ့သလဲ။

I think Yamaha does a really good job of teaching us how to compose.

Yamaha ဟာ သီဖွဲ့နည်း သင်ပေးဖို့ ကောင်းမွန်တဲ့အလုပ်တစ်ခု လုပ်တယ်ထင်တယ်။

What I do first is, I make a lot of little musical ideas

ကျွန်မ ပထမဆုံး လုပ်တာက ဟောဒီ စန္ဒရားမှာ လက်တန်းတီးနိုင်တဲ့

you can just improvise here at the piano --

ဂီတ စိတ်ကူးလေးတွေ အများကြီး ဖန်တီးပြီး

and I choose one of those to become my main theme, my main melody,

ကျွန်မရဲ့ အဓိက သံစဉ်၊အဓိကတေးသွား ဖြစ်လာဖို့ ဒါတွေထဲက တစ်ခုကို ရွေးလိုက်တယ်။

like the Abegg that you just heard.

အခုပဲ သင်တို့ ကြားခဲ့တဲ့ Abegg လိုပေါ့။

And once I choose my main theme, I have to decide:

အဓိက သံစဉ်ကို ရွေးပြီးတာနဲ့ ကျွန်မ ဆုံ'ဖြတ်ဖို့လိုတယ်။

Out of all the styles in music, what kind of style do I want?

ဂီတမှာရှိတဲ့ ဟန်တွေ အားလုံးအနက် ဘယ်ဟန်မျိုးကို ကျွန်မ လိုချင်လဲ။

And this year, I composed a Romantic style.

ဒီနှစ်တော့ ရိုမန်းတစ်ဟန်တစ်ပုဒ် သီဖွဲ့ခဲ့တယ်။

So for inspiration, I listened to Liszt and Tchaikovsky

ဒီတော့ စေ့ဆော်မှုအတွက် ကျွန်မ Liszt နဲ့ Tchaikovsky ကို နားထောင်တယ်။

and all the great Romantic composers.

​ကြီးကျယ်တဲ့ ရိုမန်းတစ် တေးဖွဲ့သူတွေပါ။

Next, I make the structure of the entire piece with my teachers.

နောက်ပြီး ကျွန်မရဲ့ ဆရာတွေနဲ့အတူ တေးသွား တစ်ခုလုံးရဲ့ တည်ဆောက်မှုကို ဖန်တီးတယ်

They help me plan out the whole piece.

ဆရာတွေက တစ်ခုလုံးကို ကူညီပုံစံချပေးတယ်။

And then the hard part is filling it in with musical ideas,

ဒီနောက် ခက်တဲ့အပိုင်းက ဒီတေးသွားကို ဂီတစိတ်ကူးတွေနဲ့ ဖြည့်တာပါ။

because then you have to think.

ဘာလို့ဆို အဲဒီတုန်းက စဉ်းစားဖို့လိုတယ်လေ။

And then, when the piece takes somewhat of a solified form --

ဒီနောက်မှာ တေးသွားက အတ​ော်လေး ရောယှက်ပေါင်းစပ် ပုံစံတစ်ခု

solidified, excuse me -- solidified form,

ဟုတ်ပါတယ်၊ ပေါင်းစည်းတဲ့ ပုံစံပေါက်သွားတဲ့အခါ

you're supposed to actually polish the piece, polish the details,

တေးသွားကို တကယ့်ကို့ မွမ်းမံသင့်ပါတယ် အသေးစိတ် မွမ်းမံတာပါ။

and then polish the overall performance of the composition.

ဒီနောက် သီဖွဲ့မှုရဲ့ အလုံးစုံ ဖျော်ဖြေမှုကို မွမ်းမံတာပါ။

And another thing that I enjoy doing is drawing.

ကျွန်မ လုပ်ရတာ နှစ်သက်တဲ့ နောက်ထပ်တစ်ခုက ပုံဆွဲခြင်းပါ။

Drawing, because I like to draw, you know, Japanese anime art.

ပုံဆွဲတာ၊ ကျွန်မက ပုံဆွဲတာ ကြိုက်လို့ပါ။ ဂျပန် အန်နီမီ ပန်းချီလေ။

I think that's a craze among teens right now.

ဒါက အခု ဆယ်ကျော်သက်တွေကြားမှာ ခေတ်ထနေတာထင်တယ်။

And once I realized it,

နောက် ချက်ချင်း သဘောပေါက်သွားတာက

there's a parallel between creating music and creating art,

ဂီတဖန်တီးခြင်းနဲ့ ပန်းချီ ဖန်တီးခြင်းကြားမှာ တူညီတစ်ခုရှိတာကိုပါ။

because for your motive, or your little initial idea for your drawing,

အကြောင်းက သင့်ရဲ့ ရည်ရွယ်ချက်အတွက် (သို့) ပုံဆွဲဖို့အတွက် ကနဦး စိတ်ကူးလေးက

it's your character -- you want to decide who you want to draw,

သင့်ရဲ့ဇာတ်ကောင် သင်ဆွဲချင်တဲ့သူကို ဆုံးဖြတ်ချင်တာ

or if you want to draw an original character.

(သို့) မူလ ဇာတ်ကောင်တစ်ခုကို သင်ဆွဲချင်လားပေါ့

And then you want to decide: How are you going to draw the character?

ဒီနောက်မှာ သင် ဆုံးဖြတ်ချင်တာက ဒီဇာတ်ကောင်ကို ဘယ်လိုဆွဲမလဲပေါ့။

Like, am I going to use one page? Am I going to draw it on the computer?

ဥပမာ စာတစ်မျက်နှာကို သုံးမှာလား။ ကွန်ပြူတာပေါ်မှာ ဆွဲမှာလား။

Am I going to use a two-page spread like a comic book?

ကာတွန်းစာအုပ်လို နှစ်မျက်နှာပြန့်တစ်ခုကို သုံးမှာလား။

For a more grandiose effect, I guess.

ပို ခမ်းနားတဲ့ သက်ရောက်မှု အတွက်လို့ထင်တယ်။

And then you have to do the initial sketch of the character,

ဒီနောက် ဇာတ်ကောင်ရဲ့ ကနဦး ပုံကြမ်းကို ဆွဲဖို့လိုတယ်။

which is like your structure of a piece,

ဒါက တေးသွားတစ်ခုရဲ့ တည်ဆောက်ပုံလိုပါ။

and then you add pen and pencil, and whatever details that you need --

ဒီနောက် မင်တံ၊ ခဲတံကို ထပ်ပေါင်းတယ်၊ လိုအပ်တဲ့ အသေးစိတ်တွေ မှန်သမျှပေါ့၊

that's polishing the drawing.

ဒါက ဆွဲထားတာကို မွမ်းမံတာပါ။

And another thing that both of these have in common is your state of mind,

ဒီနှစ်ခုစလုံးမှာ တူညီနေတဲ့ နောက်ထပ် အရာကတော့ သင့်ရဲ့ စိတ်အခြေအနေပါ။

because I know I'm one of those teenagers that are really easily distracted.

ကျွန်မဟာ အလွယ်တကူစိတ်ပျံ့လွင့်တတ်တဲ့ ဆယ်ကျော်သက်တွေထဲကတစ်ယောက်မိူ့ပါ။

So if I'm trying to do homework and I don't feel like it,

ဒီတော့ ကျွန်မ အိမ်စာလုပ်ဖို့ မကြိုးစားဘူး၊ လုပ်ချင်စိတ် မရှိဘူးဆိုရင်

I'll try to draw or, you know, waste my time.

ကြိုးစားပြီး ပုံဆွဲတယ် (သို့) အချိန်ဖြန်းတာလေ။

And then what happens is, sometimes I absolutely can't draw

ဒီနောက် ဖြစ်တတ်တာက တစ်ခါတစ်ရံ လုံးဝကို ပုံဆွဲလို့ မရဘူး၊

or I can't compose at all,

( သို့) လုံးဝ ရေးဖွဲ့လို့ မရဘူး။

and then it's like there's too much on your mind.

You can't focus on what you're supposed to do.

ကိုယ်လုပ်သင့်တာကို အာရုံစိုက်လို့ မရဘူး။

And sometimes, if you manage to use your time wisely and work on it,

တစ်ခါတစ်လေမှာ အချိန်ကို ဉာဏ်ရှိရှိ သုံးပြီး အလုပ်လုပ်နိုင်ရင်

you'll get something out of it, but it doesn't come naturally.

ဒါကနေ တစ်ခုခု ရမှာပါ။ ဒါပေမဲ့ လွယ်လွယ်တော့ ဖြစ်မလာဘူး။

What happens is, if something magical happens,

ဖြစ်တတ်တာက မှော်ဆန်တာ တစ်ခုခု ဖြစ်ရင်

if something natural happens to you,

သဘာဝကျတာ တစ်ခုခု ကိုယ့်မှာ ဖြစ်လာရင်

you're able to produce all this beautiful stuff instantly,

လှပတဲ့ အရာကို ချက်ချင်းကို ထုတ်လုပ်နိုင်တာပါ။

and then that's what I consider "flow,"

ဒီနောက် ဒါက "စီးမျောမှု"လို့ ကျွန်မ ယူဆတာပါ။

because that's when everything clicks and you're able to do anything.

ဘာလို့ဆိုတော့ အရာတိုင်းက ချက်ခနဲ ဖြစ်လာကာ လုပ်ချင်တာတိုင်းကို လုပ်နိုင်တာကြောင့်ပါ။

You feel like you're on top of your game and you can do anything you want.

သင်ဟာ ကစားပွဲရဲ့ ထိပ်ဆုံးမှာလို့ ခံစား ရပြီး လုပ်ချင်တာတိုင်းကို လုပ်နိုင်တယ်။

I'm not going to play my own composition today because,

ဒီနေ့ ကျွန်မရဲ့ ကိုယ်ပိုင် တေးသီချင်းကို မတီးတော့ပါဘူး၊ဘာလို့ဆိုတော့

although I did finish it, it's way too long.

အပြီးသတ်သွားပြီဆိုပေမဲ့ ရှည်လွန်းတာကြောင့်ပါ။

Instead, I'd like to try something called "improvisation."

ဒီအစား "လက်တန်းတီးခြင်း" လို့ ခေါ်တာတစ်ခုကို ကြိုးစားကြည့်မယ်။

I have here seven note cards,

one with each note of the musical alphabet.

And I'd like someone to come up here and choose five --

တစ်ယောက်ယောက် ဒီကို တက်လာပြီး ငါးခု ရွေးစေချင်ပါတယ်၊

anyone to come up here and choose five --

ဘယ်သူဖြစ်ဖြစ်လာပြီး ငါးခု ရွေးဖို့ပါ။

and then I can make it into some sort of melody,

နောက်ပြီ ဒါကို တေးသွားတစ်ခုခုအဖြစ် ကျွန်မ ဖန်တီးနိုင်တယ်။

and I'll improvise it.
