And the song that I just played was by Josef Hofmann.

It's called "Kaleidoscope."

And Hofmann is a Polish pianist and composer of the late 19th century,

و ھۆفمان پیانۆژەنێکی پۆڵەندیە و ئاوازدانەری کۆتایەکانی سەدەی ١٩یە.

and he's widely considered one of the greatest pianists of all time.

I have another piece that I'd like to play for you.

پارچەیەکی تریشم لایە حەز دەکەم بۆتانی بژەنم.

It's called "Abegg Variations," by Robert Schumann,

پێی دەوترێت"ئابێگ فاریەشنس،" لە لایەن ڕۆبێرت شیومان،

a German 19th-century composer.

ئاوازدانەری ئەڵمانی سەدەی ١٩.

The name "Abegg" is actually A-B-E-G-G,

ناوی "ئەبێگ" لە ڕاستیدا ئاوایە ئا-ب-ێ-گ.

and that's the main theme in the melody.

و ئەوە بابەتی سەرەکی بوو لە ئاوازەکە.

(Plays the notes A, B, E, G and G)

That comes from the last name of one of Schumann's female friends.

So actually, if you listen carefully,

there are supposed to be five variations on this Abegg theme.

It's written around 1834,

لە دەوروبەری (١٨٣٤) نووسراوە،

so even though it's old, I hope you'll like it.

Now comes the part that I hate.

Well, because Mr. Anderson told me

زۆر باشە، بەڕێز ئەندرسون پێی وتم

that this session is called "Sync and Flow,"

کە ئەو کۆڕبەندە پێی دەوترێت " ھاوکات بوون و ڕۆیشتن"

I was wondering, "What do I know that these geniuses don't?"

دەمپرسی"من چی دەزانم کە ئەو بلیمەتانە نایزانن؟"

So, I'll talk about musical composition,

کەواتە، باسی پێکھاتەی مۆسیقاژەن دەکەم،

even though I don't know where to start.

لەگەڵ ئەوەشى نازانم لە کوێوە دەست پێبکەم.

How do I compose?

چۆن ڕێکی بخەم؟

I think Yamaha does a really good job of teaching us how to compose.

پێم وایە یاماھا کارێکی باش دەکات لە فێرکردنی ئێمە کە چۆن ڕێک بخەین.

What I do first is, I make a lot of little musical ideas

ئەوەی کە من سەرەتا دەیکەم ئەوەیە، کە ھەندێ بیرۆکەی مۆسیقای دروست دەکەم

you can just improvise here at the piano --

دەتوانیت لێرەدا لەو پیانۆیە بیخەیتەڕوو--

and I choose one of those to become my main theme, my main melody,

و من یەکێک لەوانە ھەڵدەبژێرم تا ببێتە بابەتی سەرەکیم، ئاوازی سەرەکیم,

like the Abegg that you just heard.

وەک ئەوەی ئابێگا کە گوێتان لێبوو.

And once I choose my main theme, I have to decide:

و یەک جار کە بابەتە سەرەکیەکەم ھەڵدەبژێرم، پێویستە بڕیار بدەم:

Out of all the styles in music, what kind of style do I want?

لە دەرەوەی ھەموو شێوازەکانی مۆسیقا، چ جۆرە شێوازێکم دەوێت؟

And this year, I composed a Romantic style.

و ئەم ساڵ، شێوازێکی ڕۆمانسیم ڕێک خستووە.

So for inspiration, I listened to Liszt and Tchaikovsky

بۆیە بۆ سرووشت وەرگرتن، گوێ لە لیست و چایکۆفسکی دەگرم.

and all the great Romantic composers.

و ھەموو ئەو ڕێکخەرە ڕۆمانسیە مەزنانە.

Next, I make the structure of the entire piece with my teachers.

دواتر، پێکھاتەی ھەموو پارچەکە لەگەڵ مامۆستاکانم دروست دەکەم.

They help me plan out the whole piece.

یارمەتیاندام لە دۆزینەوەی ھەموو پارچەکان.

And then the hard part is filling it in with musical ideas,

و دواتر بەشە قورسەکە لەگەڵ بیرۆکەکانی مۆسیقاکە پڕ دەبێتەوە،

because then you have to think.

لەبەر ئەوەی دواترپێویستە بیری لێ بکەیتەوە.

And then, when the piece takes somewhat of a solified form --

و دواتر، کاتێک پارچەکە شێوەیەکی پتەو وەردەگرێت یان پێکدەھێنێت--

solidified, excuse me -- solidified form,

پتەو، بمبوورن-- شێوەیەکی پتەو،

you're supposed to actually polish the piece, polish the details,

و تۆ لە ڕاستیدا پێویستە پارچەکە بڕازێنیتەوە، وردەکاریەکانیش ببریسکێنەوە،

and then polish the overall performance of the composition.

و دواتر جێبەجێ کردنی ھەموو پێکھاتەکە ببریسکێتەوە.

And another thing that I enjoy doing is drawing.

و شتێکی تر کە چێژی لێ دەبینم وێنەکێشانە.

Drawing, because I like to draw, you know, Japanese anime art.

وێنەکێشان، چونکە حەزم لە وێنەکێشانە، دەزانن، ژاپۆنیەکان ھونەر دەبووژێنەوە.

I think that's a craze among teens right now.

پێم وایە ئەوە شتێکی شێتانەیە لە ئێستادا.

And once I realized it,

و جارێک بۆم بەدەرکەوت،

there's a parallel between creating music and creating art,

کە ھاوڕێکیەک ھەیە لە نێوان دروست کردنی مۆسیقا و دروست کردنی ھونەر،

because for your motive, or your little initial idea for your drawing,

چونکە بۆ ھاندەرت، یان بیرۆکە بچووکە سەرەتایەکان بۆ وێنەکێشانەکەت،

it's your character -- you want to decide who you want to draw,

ئەوە کەسایەتی خۆتە--تۆ بڕیار دەدەیت دەتەوێ وێنەی کێ بکێشیت،

or if you want to draw an original character.

یان ئەگەر دەتەوێت کەسایەتی بنەڕەت بکێشیت.

And then you want to decide: How are you going to draw the character?

و دواتر بڕیار دەدەیت: کە چۆن دەتەوێت کەسایەتیەکە بکێشیت؟

Like, am I going to use one page? Am I going to draw it on the computer?

وەک ئەوەی، لاپەڕەیەک بەکاردێنم؟ یان لەسەر کۆمپیوتەر دەیکێشم؟

Am I going to use a two-page spread like a comic book?

ئایا دوولاپەڕەی جیا بەکاردێنم وەک پەرتووکی کارتۆن؟

For a more grandiose effect, I guess.

بۆ کاریگەریەکی مەزن ، پێم وایە.

And then you have to do the initial sketch of the character,

و دواتر پێویستە نەخشەکێشانە سەرەتایەکانی بکەی بۆ کەسایەتیەکە،

which is like your structure of a piece,

کە وەک پێکھاتەی پارچەکەتە،

and then you add pen and pencil, and whatever details that you need --

و دواتر پێنووس و ھەر وردەکاریەکی پێویستە زیادی ئەکەی--

that's polishing the drawing.

ئەوە ڕازاندنەوەی وێنەکێشانە.

And another thing that both of these have in common is your state of mind,

و شتێکی تر کەھەریەک لەوانە بە گشتی ھەیانە ئەویش دۆخی مێشکی تۆیە،

because I know I'm one of those teenagers that are really easily distracted.

چونکە دەزانم منیش یەکێکم لەو ھەرزەکارانەی کە بەڕاستی سەرسوڕماوە.

So if I'm trying to do homework and I don't feel like it,

بۆیە کاتێک دەمەوێ ئەرکی ماڵەوە بکەم و حەز ناکەم بیکەم،

I'll try to draw or, you know, waste my time.

دەمەوێ وێنە بکێشم یان، دەزانن، کاتم بەفیڕۆبدەم.

And then what happens is, sometimes I absolutely can't draw

و ئەوەی ڕوودەدات ئەوەیە بە تەواوى ناتوانم وێنە بکێشم

or I can't compose at all,

یان ھەر بەتەواوەتی ناتوانم ڕێکی بخەم،

and then it's like there's too much on your mind.

و دواتر وەک ئەوە وایە زۆر شت ھەبێ لەناو مێشکتدا.

You can't focus on what you're supposed to do.

ناتوانیت جەخت لەسەر ئەوە بکەیتەوە کە دەبێت بیکەیت.

And sometimes, if you manage to use your time wisely and work on it,

و ھەندێ کات ئەگەر کاتەکانت بە ژیرانە ڕێکبخەیت و کاری لەسەر بکەیت،

you'll get something out of it, but it doesn't come naturally.

ھەمووتان شتێکی لێوە بەدەست دەھێنن، ئەوە ئاوا بە سروشتیانە نایەت.

What happens is, if something magical happens,

ئەوەی کە ڕوودەدات ئەوەیە، شتێکی سیحراوی ڕوودەدات،

if something natural happens to you,

ئەگەر شتێکی سروشتیانەت بەسەر دا ھات،

you're able to produce all this beautiful stuff instantly,

دەتوانیت کە ھەموو ئەو شتە جوانانە بەرھەمبھێنیت،

and then that's what I consider "flow,"

و دواتر ئەوە ئەوەیە کە وایدادەنێم"شەپۆڵ،"

because that's when everything clicks and you're able to do anything.

چونکە ئەوە کاتێک ھەموو شتێک گونجاوە و لە تواناتدایە کە ھەر شتێک بکەیت.

You feel like you're on top of your game and you can do anything you want.

I'm not going to play my own composition today because,

ئەمڕۆ من ئاوازەکەی خۆم ناژەنم چونکە،

although I did finish it, it's way too long.

Instead, I'd like to try something called "improvisation."

لە جیاتی ئەوە حەز دەکەم شتێک بکەم کە پێی دەوترێت"ئیمپرۆفاسەیشن."

I have here seven note cards,

لێرەدا حەوت کارتی نۆتم ھەیە،

one with each note of the musical alphabet.

دانەیەک لەگەڵ ھەر یەکێک لە ئەلف و بێی نۆتی مۆسیقادا.

And I'd like someone to come up here and choose five --

و حەز دەکەم یەکێک بێتە ئێرە و پێنج دانە ھەڵبژێرێت--

anyone to come up here and choose five --

and then I can make it into some sort of melody,

and I'll improvise it.
