And the song that I just played was by Josef Hofmann.

제가 연주한 곡은 조셉 호프만의 작품입니다.

It's called "Kaleidoscope."

'만화경'으로 불리는 곡이죠.

And Hofmann is a Polish pianist and composer of the late 19th century,

호프만은 19세기 폴란드 피아니시트 겸 작곡가입니다, 그리고

지금까지 가장 훌륭한 피아니스트 중 한명으로 간주되죠.

and he's widely considered one of the greatest pianists of all time.

I have another piece that I'd like to play for you.

여러분을 위하여 제가 연주하고 싶은 곡이 있습니다.

It's called "Abegg Variations," by Robert Schumann,

이 곡은 19세기 독일작곡가 로버트 슈만의

a German 19th-century composer.

"아베그 변주곡"이라고 불리는 곡이지요.

The name "Abegg" is actually A-B-E-G-G,

아베그의 스펠링은 -- 사실 A-B-E-G-G 인데,

and that's the main theme in the melody.

그것이 바로 그 멜로디의 주된 테마이지요.

(Plays the notes A, B, E, G and G)

That comes from the last name of one of Schumann's female friends.

이 이름은 슈만의 여자 친구 한명의 성(이름)에서 따온 것입니다.

(Laughter)

But he wrote that for his wife.

하지만 그는 그 곡을 그의 아내에게 바쳤지요.

(Laughter)

So actually, if you listen carefully,

이 음악을 집중해서 잘들으시면

there are supposed to be five variations on this Abegg theme.

아베그의 테마에서 5개의 변주를 들으실 수 있지요.

It's written around 1834,

so even though it's old, I hope you'll like it.

Now comes the part that I hate.

Well, because Mr. Anderson told me

that this session is called "Sync and Flow,"

"조화와 몰입"이라고 그래서 제가 그것에 대해

I was wondering, "What do I know that these geniuses don't?"

알고있는게 무엇인지 생각했지요.

하여튼 어디서 부터 제 이야기를 시작해야 할지는 모르지만

So, I'll talk about musical composition,

even though I don't know where to start.

음악 작곡에 대해 말씀드리겠습니다.

How do I compose?

제가 어떻게 작곡을 할까요?

I think Yamaha does a really good job of teaching us how to compose.

저는 야마하 씨는 작곡 교육에 정말로 뛰어나다고 생각합니다.

What I do first is, I make a lot of little musical ideas

저는 작곡을 할때 우선 많은 음악적 아이디어를 생각해 내지요.

you can just improvise here at the piano --

그저 피아노 앞에서 즉흥적으로 멜로디를 만드는 거예요

and I choose one of those to become my main theme, my main melody,

그리고는 그 아이디어 중 하나를 저의 중심적인 주제, 선율로 선택하지요.

여러분께서 들었던 아베그처럼 말이죠.

like the Abegg that you just heard.

And once I choose my main theme, I have to decide:

일단 제가 주 테마를 선택하면

Out of all the styles in music, what kind of style do I want?

여러 스타일 중에서 어떤 스타일이 제일 좋을가를 선택하죠.

And this year, I composed a Romantic style.

올해 저는 로맨틱한 곡을 하나 작곡했지요.

So for inspiration, I listened to Liszt and Tchaikovsky

그런데 영감을 받기 위해 리스트, 차이코프스키 그리고

and all the great Romantic composers.

여러 위대한 로맨틱 작곡가의 음악을 들었습니다.

Next, I make the structure of the entire piece with my teachers.

그 다음에는 저의 음악선생님들과 함께 곡 전체의 구조를 구상했지요.

They help me plan out the whole piece.

제 음악 선생님들은 곡 전체에 대한 계획을 짜도록 저를 도와 줬지요.

And then the hard part is filling it in with musical ideas,

그 다음 과정은 음악적인 아이디어를 주입시키는 것인데 이 부분은

because then you have to think.

생각을 해야 하기 때문에 제일 힘들지요.

(Laughter)

And then, when the piece takes somewhat of a solified form --

그리고 그 곡이 어느정도 틀이 잡히면

solidified, excuse me -- solidified form,

죄송합니다, 틀이 잡히면,

you're supposed to actually polish the piece, polish the details,

그 곡의 자세한 부분들을 손질하고 그 다음에는

and then polish the overall performance of the composition.

작곡의 전반적인 효과를 다듬지요.

And another thing that I enjoy doing is drawing.

저는 또 그림 그리는 것도 즐기는데

Drawing, because I like to draw, you know, Japanese anime art.

저는 사실 일본 만화를 그리는 것을 좋아하지요.

I think that's a craze among teens right now.

10대 아이들은 이것을 열광적으로 좋아하죠.

저는 작곡과 그림을 그리는 것에

And once I realized it,

there's a parallel between creating music and creating art,

공통점이 있다는 것을 깨달았지요.

because for your motive, or your little initial idea for your drawing,

왜냐면, 그림을 그리고 싶은 마음이나 그림에 대한 아이디어는

어떤 캐릭터에 대한 것인데, 그때 기존 캐릭터를 그릴것인지

it's your character -- you want to decide who you want to draw,

or if you want to draw an original character.

아니면 새로운 캐릭터를 그릴 것인지 결정하지요.

And then you want to decide: How are you going to draw the character?

그리고는 그 캐릭터를 어떻게 그릴지를 결정하지요.

Like, am I going to use one page? Am I going to draw it on the computer?

한 페이지에 그림을 그릴까?

컴퓨터에 그릴까?

좀 더 웅장한 효과가 나게 만화책 처럼 두 페이지에

Am I going to use a two-page spread like a comic book?

For a more grandiose effect, I guess.

걸친 큰 그림을 그릴까?

And then you have to do the initial sketch of the character,

그리고는 그 캐릭터의 기본 스케치를 하는데

which is like your structure of a piece,

그건 그림의 뼈대 같은 거죠.

and then you add pen and pencil, and whatever details that you need --

그리고는 펜과 연필을 사용해서 필요한대로 세부사항을 추가하는데

that's polishing the drawing.

그것이 마무리 과정이지요.

And another thing that both of these have in common is your state of mind,

음악과 그림의 또 다른 공통점은

마음의 상태인데 그이유는

because I know I'm one of those teenagers that are really easily distracted.

저도 집중력이 약하고 쉽게 산만해 지는 십대 중 한명입니다,

So if I'm trying to do homework and I don't feel like it,

그래서 숙제를 하려고 할때

숙제하기가 싫으면

I'll try to draw or, you know, waste my time.

저는 그림을 그리려고 하던지 아니면 그냥 놀면서 시간을 낭비하지요

And then what happens is, sometimes I absolutely can't draw

그런데 어떤때는 전혀 그림을 그리거나 또는

or I can't compose at all,

작곡을 할 수 없는데 이것은

and then it's like there's too much on your mind.

신경쓸 것이 너무나 많은 것과 같죠.

하려고 하는 것에 집중 할 수 없습니다.

You can't focus on what you're supposed to do.

And sometimes, if you manage to use your time wisely and work on it,

그런데 제 시간을 잘 관리해고 노력을 하면

you'll get something out of it, but it doesn't come naturally.

좋은 결과를 좀 가질 수 있는데 그게 쉽지는 않아요.

What happens is, if something magical happens,

그런데 가끔가다 마술같은 일이 생기거나

if something natural happens to you,

또는 자연적으로 마음속에서 뭐가 우러나오면

you're able to produce all this beautiful stuff instantly,

그 즉시로 아름다운 것들을 창작할 수 있는데

저는 그것을 몰입이라고 생각해요

and then that's what I consider "flow,"

because that's when everything clicks and you're able to do anything.

왜냐하면 모든 것이 맞아 들어 갈때는 뭐든지 할 수 있으니가요.

You feel like you're on top of your game and you can do anything you want.

그럴때는 마치 그 분야의 마스터가 돼서

무엇이나 할 수 있을 것 처럼 느껴지지요.

I'm not going to play my own composition today because,

제가 작곡한 음악은 지금 여기에서 제가 연주하지 않겠습니다 왜냐하면

although I did finish it, it's way too long.

작곡은 끝났지만 음악이 너무 길어요.

그대신 제가 즉흥곡을 하나 작곡하지요.

Instead, I'd like to try something called "improvisation."

I have here seven note cards,

여기 7개의 피아노 키 카드가 있습니다.

one with each note of the musical alphabet.

각각 음악 알파벳이 적혀있죠,

And I'd like someone to come up here and choose five --

어떤분이 나오셔서 카드 다섯장을 선택해 주시기 바래요.

and then I can make it into some sort of melody,

and I'll improvise it.
