we generate 680 cubic meters of plastic garbage a day.

That's about a 14-story building.

IW: So we decided to do something about it.

And we've been working for almost three years now

to try to say no to plastic bags on our home island.

Green School is not only different in the way that it is built out of bamboo,

but also in the way that it teaches.

သင်ပုံသင်နည်းကြောင့်လည်း ထင်ရှားပါတယ်။

We are taught to become leaders of today,

ကျွန်မတို့ကို ယနေ့ခေတ်ရဲ့ ခေါင်းဆောင်တွေ ဖြစ်လာအောင်

something a normal textbook cannot match.

IW: One day we had a lesson in class

where we learned about significant people,

like Nelson Mandela,

and Mahatma Gandhi.

Walking home that day,

အဲဒီနေ့ လမ်းလျှောက်ပြီး

we agreed that we also wanted to be significant.

Why should we wait until we were grown up

to be significant?

We wanted to do something now.

MW: Sitting on the sofa that night,

we brainstormed and thought of all the issues facing Bali.

And one thing that stood out to us the most

အထူးခြားဆုံး ပေါ်လာတာတစ်ခုက

was the plastic garbage.

But that is a huge problem.

So we looked into what was a realistic target for us kids:

plastic bags.

ပလပ်စတစ် အိတ်တွေပါ။

And the idea was born.

IW: We started researching,

IW: ကျွန်မတို့ သုသေသနစလုပ်ခဲ့ပြီး

and let's just say, the more we learned,

ပြောရရင် ပိုသိလာရတာက

there was nothing good about plastic bags.

And you know what?

ဘာလဲဆိုတာ သိပါလား။

We don't even need them.

MW: We were really inspired by the efforts to say no to plastic bags

in many other places,

from Hawaii to Rwanda

and to severals cities like Oakland and Dublin.

IW: And so the idea turned into the launch of "Bye Bye Plastic Bags."

IW: ဒီလိုနဲ့ ဒီစိတ်ကူးကနေ "Bye Bye Plastic Bags" စတင်ဖြစ်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။

MW: In the years that we have been campaigning,

MW: ကျွန်မတို့ လှုံဆော်မှုလုပ်တဲ့ နှစ်တွေမှာ

we have learned a lot.

Lesson number one:

သင်ခန်းစာ တစ်။

you cannot do it all by yourself.

You need a big team of like-minded kids,

and so we formed the Bye Bye Plastic Bags crew.

ဒီလိုနဲ့ Bye Bye Plastic Bag အဖွဲကို ဖွဲ့ခဲ့တာပါ။

The volunteer team includes children from all over the island,

စေတနာ့ဝန်ထမ်းအသင်းမှာ တစ်ကျွန်းလုံးက ကလေးတွေ၊ နိုင်ငံတကာနဲ့

from both international and local schools.

ဒေသတွင်းကျောင်းက ကလေးတွေ ပါဝင်ပါတယ်။

And together with them,

we started a multi-layered approach,

အလွှာစုံပါတဲ့ နည်းကို စတင်ခဲ့တယ်။

based on an on- and off-line signature petition,

educational and inspirational presentations at schools

ကျောင်းမှာ ပညာပေးနဲ့ လှုံဆော်တဲ့ တင်ဆက်မှုတွေကို အခြေခံပြီး

and we raise general awareness at markets, festivals, beach clean-ups.

စျေးတွေ၊ ပွဲတော်တွေ၊ ကမ်းခြေရှင်းလင်းမှု တွေမှာ အများသတိပြုစိတ်ကို မြှင့်ပေးပါတယ်။

And last but not least,

နောက်ဆုံးအနေနဲ့က

we distribute alternative bags,

အခြားရွေးချယ်လို့ရတဲ့ အိတ်တွေကို ဝေပေးတယ်။

bags like net bags,

ဥပမာ ပိုက်ကွန်အိတ်၊

recycled newspaper bags

ပြန်သုံးထားတဲ့ သတင်းစာအိတ်၊

or 100 percent organic material bags,

all made by local initiatives on the island.

IW: We run a pilot village,

မိသားစု ၈၀၀ ရှိတဲ့ ရှေ့ပြေး

home of 800 families.

The village mayor was our first friend

and he loved our T-shirts, so that helped.

We focused on making the customers aware,

because that's where the change needs to happen.

The village is already two-thirds along the way

Our first attempts to get the government of Bali on board failed.

So we thought,

"Hmm ... a petition with one million signatures.

They can't ignore us, right?"

MW: Right!

IW: But, who would have guessed

IW: ဒါပေမဲ့ လက်မှတ်တစ်သန်းဆိုတာ

one million signatures is, like, a thousand times a thousand?

တစ်ထောင် အကြိမ်တစ်ထောင်ဆိုတာ ဘယ်သူခန့်မှန်းမိမှာတုန်း။

We got stuck --

ကျွန်မတို့ ပိတ်မိနေတယ်။

till we learned lesson number two:

သင်ခန်းစာ နှစ်ကို မသိခင်ထိပေါ့။

think outside the box.

ဖောက်ထွက်ပြီး တွေးပါ။

Someone mentioned

တစ်ယောက်က ပြောတာက

that the Bali airport handles 16 million arrivals and departures a year.

ဘာလီလေဆိပ်ဟာ တစ်နှစ်ကို လူ အဝင်၊အတွက် ၁၆ သန်း ရှိတယ်တဲ့။

MW: But how do we get into the airport?

MW: ဒါပေမဲ့ လေဆိပ်ထဲကို ဘယ်လိုဝင်မလဲ။

And here comes lesson number three:

ဒီမှာ သင်ခန်းစာ သုံးလာပါပြီ။

persistence.

ဇွဲရှိပါ။

Off we headed to the airport.

လေဆိပ်ကို ဦးတည်ခဲ့ကြတယ်။

We got past the janitor.

အစောင့်ကို ဖြတ်ကျော်တယ်။

And then it was his boss's boss,

ပြီးတော့ သူ့အကြီးအကဲရဲ့ အကြီးအကဲ၊

and then the assistant office manager,

ပြီးတော့ ရုံးခန်းလက်ထောက် မန်နေဂျာ၊

and then the office manager,

and then ...

we got shuffled down two levels and thought,

well, here comes the janitor again.

And after several days knocking on doors

ရက်ပေါင်းများစွာ တံခါးတွေခေါက်ပြီးတဲ့နောက်

and just being kids on a mission,

ပြီးတော့ အထူးအဖွဲ့က ကလေးတွေဖြစ်ခြင်းကြောင့်ပဲ

we finally got to the commercial manager of Bali airports.

နောက်ဆုံးမှာ ဘာလီလေဆိပ်က ကုန်သွယ်ရေး မန်နေဂျာဆီ ရောက်ခဲ့တယ်။

And we gave him the "Bali of plastic bags" speech, and being a very nice man,

he said, [imitating the man's voice] "I cannot believe what I'm about say,

but I'm going to give authorization

IW: In our first hour and a half there,

we got almost 1,000 signatures.

How cool is that?

Lesson number four:

သင်ခန်းစာ လေး။

you need champions at all levels of society,

လူ့အဖွဲ့အစည်းရဲ့ အဆင့်အားလုံးမှာ ချန်ပီယံတွေလိုပါတယ်။

from students to commercial managers to famous people.

ကျောင်းသားတွေကနေ ကုန်သွယ်ရေး မန်နေဂျာ၊ နာမည်ကျော်တွေထိပါ။

And thanks to the attraction of Green School,

Green School ရဲ့ ဆွဲဆောင်အား ကျေးဇူးကြောင့်

we had access to a steady stream of celebrities.

အကျော်အမော် တသီကြီးဆီ ပုံမှန်တွေ့ခွင့်ရခဲ့ပါတယ်။

Ban Ki Moon taught us

that Secretary-Generals of the United Nations

don't sign petitions --

But he promised to spread the word,

MW: Jane Goodall taught us the power of a people's network.

She started with just one Roots & Shoots group

MW: It's not always easy.

Sometimes it does get a little bit hard to walk your talk.

IW: But last year, we did exactly that.

We went to India to give a talk,

and our parents took us to visit

We learned about the power of hunger strikes

he did to reach his goals.

Yes, by the end of the tour,

when we met our parents again,

we both made a decision and said,

"We're going on a hunger strike!"

MW: And you can probably imagine their faces.

It took a lot of convincing,

and not only to our parents

but to our friends and to our teachers as well.

Isabel and I were serious about doing this.

So we met with a nutritionist,

and we came up with a compromise

of not eating from sunrise to sunset every day

until the governor of Bali would agree to meet with us

ဆွေးနွေးရန် ကျွန်မတို့ကို တွေ့ဖို့ သဘောမတူမချင်း

to talk about how to stop plastic bags on Bali.

IW: Our "mogak makan," as it is called in Bahasa Indonesia,

IW: ကျွန်မတို့ Bahasa Indonesia လိုခေါ်တဲ့ "mogak makan"

started.

We used social media to support our goal

ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ ရည်ရွယ်ချက်ကို ထောက်ခံဖို့

and already on day two,

police started to come to our home and school.

we could have gone to jail.

But, hey, it worked.

Twenty-four hours later,

we were picked up from school

and escorted to the office of the governor.

MW: And there he was --

waiting for us to meet and speak,

being all supportive and thankful for our willingness

He signed a promise

to help the people of Bali say no to plastic bags.

And we are now friends,

and on a regular basis,

is our next message to change that mindset of the public.

ပြည်သူတွေရဲ့ စိတ်သဘောထားကို ပြောင်းဖို့ လာမယ့် အမှာစကားပါ။

We check and recognize the shops and restaurants

ဆိုင်တွေနဲ့ စားသောက်ဆိုင်တွေဟာ ပလတ်စတစ်အိတ် ကင်းရှင်းတာ

that have declared themselves a plastic bag-free zone,

သူတို့ကိုယ်တိုင်ကြေညာဖို့ စစ်ဆေး မှတ်သားပြီး

and we put this sticker at their entrance

ဆိုင်ဝမှာ ဒီစတစ်ကာ ကပ်ပါတယ်၊

and publish their names on social media

သူတို့အမည်တွေကို လူမှုမီဒီယာတွေနဲ့ ဘာလီက

and some important magazines on Bali.

အရေးပါတဲ့ စာစောင်တွေမှာ ပုံနှိပ်တယ်။

And conversely,

ဆန့်ကျင်ဘက်အနေနဲ့

that highlights those who do not have the sticker.

စတစ်ကာမရှိတဲ့လူတွေကို မှတ်သားထားတယ်။

MW: So, why are we actually telling you all of this?

MW: တကယ်က ဘာလို့ဒီအကြောင်း ရှင်တို့ကို ပြောနေရတာလဲ။

Well, partly, it is because we are proud

တစ်စိတ်တစ်ပိုင်းအနေနဲ့ ကျွန်မတို့အဖွဲ့

of the results that, together with our team,

အတူ ဆွတ်ခူးနိုင်ခဲ့တဲ့ အဲဒီရလဒ်ကို

we have been able to reach.

But also because along the way,

နောက်ပြီးတော့ တစ်လျှောက်လုံးမှာ

we have learned that kids can do things.

ကလေးတွေဟာ ကိစ္စတွေကို လုပ်နိုင်တယ်ဆိုတာ သိလာခဲ့လို့ပါ။

We can make things happen.

အခြေအနေတွေ ဖြစ်အောင် လုပ်နိုင်တယ်။

Isabel and I were only 10 and 12 years old

when we started this.

၁၂ နှစ်ပဲ ရှိသေးပါတယ်။

We never had a business plan,

nor a fixed strategy,

nor any hidden agendas --

အစီအစဉ်တို့ မရှိခဲ့ဘူး

just the idea in front of us

ကိုယ့်ရှေ့မှောက်က စိတ်ကူးနဲ့

and a group of friends working with us.

မိတ်ဆွေတစ်စုနဲ့ အတူလုပ်ခဲ့တာပါပဲ။

All we wanted to do was stop those plastic bags

လုပ်ချင်တာဆိုလို့ လှပတဲ့ နေရာကို ပလပ်စတစ်

from wrapping and suffocating our beautiful home.

အိတ်တွေနဲ့ရစ်ပတ်၊ မွန်းကျပ်တာကနေ တားဆီးချင်တာပါ။

Kids have a boundless energy

ကလေးတွေမှာ အကန့်သတ်မဲ့ စွမ်းအင်နဲ့

and a motivation to be the change the world needs.

ကမ္ဘာ့ကလိုတဲ့ အပြောင်းအလဲဖြစ်ဖို့ စိတ်ပါဝင်စားမှုတစ်ခု ရှိတယ်။

IW: So to all the kids of this beautiful but challenging world:

Us kids may only be 25 percent of the world's population,

but we are 100 percent of the future.

MW: We still have a lot of work to do,
