There's been very little research done on us,

Because they only -- for years, decades --

they only researched men when they were trying to understand stress,

only very recently have they researched what happens to women when we're stressed,

I find that I shed tears a lot with my intimate friends.

And I always think, when women talk about their friendships,

that men always look a little mystified.

What are the differences, in your opinion,

between men friendships and women friendships?

JF: There's a lot of difference,

and I think we have to have a lot of empathy for men --

that they don't have what we have.

I have a lot of compassion for men,

women's relationships, our friendships are full disclosure, we go deep.

They're revelatory.

We risk vulnerability -- this is something men don't do.

ကျွန်မတို့က အားနည်းချက်ကို စွန့်စားတယ် ..ဒါက ယောက်ျားတွေ မလုပ်ကြဘူးလေ။

I mean how many times have I asked you, "Am I doing OK?"

ဆိုလိုတာက "ကျွန်မ အဆင်ပြေလား" လို့ ရှင့်ကို ဘယ်နှစ်ခါမေးဖူးလဲ။

"Did I really screw up there?"

"ကျွန်မက ပေါက်တိကပေါက်ချာ ဖြစ်ခဲ့လား" လို့လေ။

JF: But I mean, we ask questions like that

of our women friends,

and men don't.

You know, people describe women's relationships as face-to-face,

whereas men's friendships are more side-by-side.

LT: I mean most of the time men don't want to reveal their emotions,

they want to bury deeper feelings.

I mean, that's the general, conventional thought.

They would rather go off in their man cave and watch a game or hit golf balls,

or talk about sports, or hunting, or cars or have sex.

အကြောင်းပြောတာ၊ အမဲလိုက်တာ၊ ကားတွေနဲ့ လိင်ဆက်ဆံတာတွေ လုပ်ကြတယ်။

I mean, it's just the kind of -- it's a more manly behavior.

ဆိုလိုတာက ဒါက ယောက်ျား ပိုဆန်တဲ့ အပြုအမူမျိုးပါ။

JF: You meant -- LT: They talk about sex.

JF: ရှင်ဆိုလိုတာက LT: သူတို့ လိင်ကိစ္စပြောတာ။

I meant they might have sex

if they could get somebody in their man cave to --

တစ်ယောက်ယောက် ရောက်လာရင် လိင်ဆက်ဆံလောက်တယ်လို့ပါ။

JF: You know something, though, that I find very interesting --

အရမ်း စိတ်ဝင်စားစရာကောင်းတယ်လို့ ကျွန်မထင်တဲ့ဟာ တစ်ခု ရှင်သိပေမယ့်

and again, psychologists didn't know this until relatively recently --

ထပ်ပြောရရင် စိတ်ပညာရှင်တွေ မကြာသေးခင်ကမှ သိတာက

is that men are born every bit as relational as women are.

If you look at films of newborn baby boys and girls,

ရုပ်ရှင်ထဲမှာ မွေးကင်းစ ယောက်ျားလေး၊ မိန်ကလေးတွေကို ကြည့်လိုက်ရင်

you'll see the baby boys just like the girls,

ယောက်ျားပေါက်စလေးတွေဟာ မိန်းကလေးတွေ လိုပဲလေ၊

gazing into their mother's eyes,

သူတို့အမေတွေရဲ့ မျက်လုံးတွေထဲ ငေးကြည့်နေကြတာ။

you know, needing that relational exchange of energy.

သိတဲ့အတိုင်း၊ စွမ်းအင်ရဲ့ ဆက်နွယ်မှုကို ဖလှယ်ချင်တာကို ပြနေတာလေ။

When the mother looks away, they could see the dismay on the child,

မိခင်က မျက်နှာကိုလွှဲလိုက်တဲ့အခါ ကလေးရဲ့ တုန်လှုပ်မှုကို မြင်တွေ့နိုင်ပါတယ်။

even the boy would cry.

ကောင်လေးက ငိုတောင်ငိုမယ်။

They need relationship.

သူတို့ဟာ ဆက်နွယ်မှုကို လိုအပ်ကြတယ်။

So the question is why, as they grow older, does that change?

ဒီတော့ မေးခွန်းက သူတို့ကြီးလာတော့ ဘာလို့ပြောင်းသွားတာလဲ။

And the answer is patriarchal culture,

အဖြေကတော့ ယောက်ျားကြီးစိုးတဲ့ ယဉ်ကျေးမှုပါ။

which says to boys and young men

ကောင်လေးတွေနဲ့ လူရွယ်တွေကို ဆက်နွယ်မှုကို လိုအပ်ခြင်း၊

that to be needing of relationship, to be emotional with someone is girly.

စိတ်လှုပ်ရှားခံစားမှုတို့လို အရာတွေဟာ မိန်းကလေးဆန်မှုလို့ ထင်မြင်ကြတယ်။

That a real man doesn't ask directions or express a need,

တကယ့် ယောက်ျားတွေဟာဟာ လမ်းညွန်ချက် တောင်းတာ၊ လိုအပ်တာကို မေးတာ မလုပ်ဘူး။

they don't go to doctors if they feel bad.

နေထိုင်မကောင်းရင် ဆရာဝန်ဆီ မသွားဘူး။

They don't ask for help.

အကူအညီ မတောင်းဘူး။

There's a quote that I really like,

အရမ်းကြိုက်တဲ့ ကိုးကားချက် တစ်ခုက

"Men fear that becoming 'we' will erase his 'I'."

"ယောက်ျားတွေကြောက်တာက "ငါတို့" ဖြစ်လာမှုက သူ့ရဲ့ "ငါ"ကို ဖျက်ပစ်မှာကိုပါ။"

You know, his sense of self.

သိတဲ့အတိုင်း၊ သူရဲ့ အတ္တ သဘောလေ။

Whereas women's sense of self has always been kind of porous.

မိန်းမတွေရဲ့ အတ္တသဘောကျတော့ အမြဲ စိမ့်ဝင်နိုင်မှုမျိုး ဖြစ်နေတယ်။

But our "we" is our saving grace,

ဒါပေမဲ့ "ငါတို့" ဆိုတာဟာ ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ ကျက်သရေ ဆယ်ခြင်းပါ။

it's what makes us strong.

ဒါက ကျွန်မတို့ကို သန်မာအောင် လုပ်ပေးတားပါ။

It's not that we're better than men,

ကျွန်မတို့ ယောက်ျားတွေထက် မသါပါဘူး။

we just don't have our masculinity to prove.

LT: And, well --

JF: That's a Gloria Steinem quote.

So we can express our humanity -- LT: I know who Gloria Steinem is.

JF: I know you know who she is, but I think it's a --

No, but it's a great quote, I think.

We're not better than men, we just don't have our masculinity to prove.

And that's really important.

LT: But men are so inculcated in the culture

to be comfortable in the patriarchy.

And we've got to make something different happen.

JF: Women's friendships are like a renewable source of power.

JF: အမျိုးသမီးတွေရဲ့ ချစ်ခင်ရင်းနှီးမှုဟာ ထပ်ဆန်းသစ်နိုင်တဲ့ စွမ်းအင်နဲ့ ဆင်တူတယ်။

LT: Well, that's what's exciting about this subject.

LT: ဒါက ဒီအကြောင်းနဲ့ပတ်သက်ပြီး စိတ်လှုပ်ရှားစရာပါ။

It's because our friendships --

ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ ရင်းနှီးမှုကြောင့်

female friendships are just a hop to our sisterhood,

မိန်းမချင်းရင်းနှီးမှုတွေဟာ ညီမရင်းချာ ချစ်ကြည်မှု ခရီးတစ်ထောက် ​ဖြစ်ပြီး

and sisterhood can be a very powerful force,

ညီမရင်းချာ ချစ်ကြည်မှုဟာ အရမ်း အစွမ်းရှိတဲ့ အားအင်တစ်ခု ဖြစ်နိုင်တယ်လေ။

to give the world --

ကမ္ဘာကြီးကို ပေးဖို့...

to make it what it should be --

the things that humans desperately need.

PM: It is why we're talking about it,

because women's friendships are,

as you said, Jane,

Jan ပြောသလို ဆန်းသစ်လို့

a renewable source of power.

ရတဲ့ စွမ်းအင်ရင်းမြစ်လို့ပါ။

So how do we use that power?

ဒီတော့ ဒါကို ဘယ်လို သုံးကြမလဲ။

JF: Well, women are the fastest growing demographic in the world,

JF: အင်း၊ မိန်းမတွေဟာ ကမ္ဘာမှာ အမြန်ဆုံး တိုးပွားနေတဲ့ လူဦးရေပါ၊

especially older women.

အထူးက သက်ကြီးမိန်းမတွေပါ။

And if we harness our power, we can change the world.

ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ စွမ်းအားကို အသုံးချနိုင်ရင် ကမ္ဘာကို ပြောင်းလဲနိုင်တာပေါ့။

And guess what? We need to.

ဘာလို့ ထင်လဲ။ လုပ်ဖို့လိုတာပါ။

And we need to do it soon.

And one of the things that we need to do --

and we can do it as women --

မိန်းမတွေအဖြစ်နဲ့ လုပ်နိုင်တယ်။

for one thing, we kind of set the consumer standards.

တစ်ခုရှိတာက၊ သုံးစွဲသူ စံနှုန်းတွေ ချမှတ်တာမျိုးပေါ့။

We need to consume less.

ကျွန်မတို့ လျှော့သုံးဖို့လိုတယ်။

We in the Western world need to consume less

ကျွန်မတို့ အနောက်တိုင်းမှာ လျှော့သုံးဖို့လိုတယ်။

and when we buy things, we need to buy things that are made locally,

ပစ္စည်းတွေ ဝယ်တဲ့အခါ ဒေသတွင်း လုပ်တဲ့ပစ္စည်းတွေ ဝယ်ဖို့လိုတယ်။

when we buy food, we need to buy food that's grown locally.

အစားအစာဝယ်ရင် ဒေသတွင်း စိုက်တဲ့ အစားအစာကို ဝယ်ဖို့လိုတယ်။

We are the ones that need to get off the grid.

ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ ကိုယ့်ဘာသာ လုံလောက်အောင် လုပ်ဖို့ လိုသူတွေပါ။

We need to make ourselves independent from fossil fuels.

ကျွန်မတို့ကိုယ်တိုင် ရုပ်ကြွင်းလောင်စာ တွေကို မှီခိုရတာ ကင်းဖို့လိုတယ်။

And the fossil fuel companies --

ရုပ်ကြွင်းလောင်စာ ကုမ္ပဏီတွေဖြစ်တဲ့...

the Exxons and the Shell Oils and those bad guys --

Exxons နဲ့ Shell Oils နဲ့ ဒီလူဆိုးတွေဟာ...

cause they are --

သူတို့တွေက ကျွန်မတို့ကို

are going to tell us that we can't do it without going back to the Stone Age.

ကျောက်ခေတ်ကို ပြန်မသွားရပဲနဲ့ ဒါကို မလုပ်နိုင်ဘူးလို့ ပြောတော့မှာ မို့ပါ။

You know, that the alternatives just aren't quite there yet,

သိတဲ့အတိုင်း အစားထိုးသုံးစရာက ရှိမှမရှိသေးတာ ဆိုကြပါတယ်။

and that's not true.

ဒါ မမှန်ပါဘူး။

There are countries in the world right now

အကြိမ်ကြိမ် သုံးနိုင်နိုင်တဲ့ စွမ်းအင်ကို

that are living mostly on renewable energy and doing just fine.

သုံးနေလို့ အဆင်ပြေနေတဲ့ နိုင်ငံတွေ အများကြီး ကမ္ဘာပေါ်မှာ ရှိနေကြပါပြီ။

And they tell us that if we do wean ourselves from fossil fuel

ရုပ်ကြွင်းလောင်စာတွေသုံးမှုကို ဖြတ်မပစ်ရင် ကျွန်မတို့တွေ

that we're going to be back in the Stone Age,

ကျောက်ခေတ်ကို ပြန်ရောက်သွားလိမ့်မယ်တဲ့။

and in fact, if we begin to use renewable energy,

တကယ်က အကြိမ်ကြိမ်သုံးနိုင်တဲ့ စွမ်းအင်ကို စသုံးလိုက်ရင်

and not drill in the Arctic, and not drill --

LT: Oh, boy.

JF: And not drill in the Alberta tar sands --

That we will be --

there will be more democracy and more jobs and more well-being,

and it's women that are going to lead the way.

ပြီး အမျိုးသမီးတွေဟာ ဒီနည်းကို ဦးဆောင်တော့မှာ။

LT: Maybe we have the momentum to start a third-wave feminist movement

LT: ဖြစ်နိုင်တာက ကျွန်မတို့တွေဟာ ကမ္ဘာ တစ်လွှားက ညီမရင်းချာ ချစ်ခင်သူတွေနဲ့အတူ

with our sisterhood around the world,

with women we don't see, women we may never meet,

but we join together that way,

Aristotle said --

most people --

လူအများစုဟာ....

people would die without male friendships.

ယောက်ျား ခင်မင်ရင်းနှီးမှု မရှိရင် လူတွေသေလိမ့်မယ်တဲ့။

And the operative word here was "male."

သော့ချက်စကားလုံးက "ယောက်ျား" ဆိုတာပါ။

Because they thought that friendships should be between equals

အကြောင်းက ရင်းနှီးမှုဟာ တူညီမှုကြားမှာ ဖြစ်သင့်တယ်လို့ ထင်ကာ

and women were not considered equal --

မိန်းမတွေကို အတူတူလို့ မစဉ်းစားကြလို့လေ။

JF: They didn't think we had souls even, the Greeks.

ဂရိတွေက ကျွန်မတို့ကို အသက်ရှိတယ် တောင် မထင်ခဲ့ဘူး။

LT: No, exactly. That shows you just how limited Aristotle was.

And wait, no, here's the best part.

It's like, you know, men do need women now.

The planet needs women.

The US Constitution needs women.

US အခြေခံဥပဒေက မိန်းမတွေကို လိုအပ်တယ်။

We are not even in the Constitution.

ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ အခြေခံဥပဒေမှာတောင် မပါဘူး။

JF: You're talking about the Equal Rights Amendment.

JF: ရှင်က တူညီတဲ အခွင့်အရေး ပြင်ဆင်ချက်ကို ပြောနေတာပါ။

LT: Right.

LT: မှန်တာပေါ့။

Justice Ginsberg said something like --

တရားသူကြီး Ginsberg က ဒီလိုပြောခဲ့တယ်။

every constitution that's been written since the end of World War II

ဒုတိယကမ္ဘာစစ်အပြီးမှာ ရေးသားခဲ့တဲ့ အခြေခံဥပဒေတိုင်းမှာ

included a provision that made women citizens of equal stature,

but ours does not.

So that would be a good place to start.

Very, very mild --

JF: Right.

And gender equality, it's like a tide,

it would lift all boats, not just women.

how to think about our power in different ways,

as consumers,

စားသုံးသူတွေအနေနဲ့

as citizens of the world,

and this is what makes Jane and Lily

a role model of how women can be friends --
