I design engineering projects

ကျွန်မဟာအလယ်တန်း နဲ့ အထက်တန်း

for middle school and high school students,

ကျောင်းသားများအတွက် ပစ္စည်းတွေကို မျှော်လင့်မရတဲ့

often using materials that are pretty unexpected.

ပုံစံမျိုးဖြင့် သုံးပြီး နည်းပညာ စီမံကိန်းတွေ ပြုစုသူပါ။

My inspiration comes from problems in my daily life.

ကျွန်မရဲ့ နေ့စဉ်ဘဝထဲက ပြဿနာတွေမှ စိတ်ကူးတွေကို ရရှိပါတယ်။

For example,

ဥပမာ ဆိုပါစို့၊

one time I needed a costume to go to a comic convention,

တစ်ခါက ပွဲတစ်ခုကို သွားရန် ကျွန်မဟာ ဝတ်စုံ လိုအပ်နေခဲ့တယ်၊

but I didn't want to spend too much money,

ဒါပေမဲ့ ကျွန်မ သိပ် မကုန်မကျ မခံချင်ခဲ့ပါ၊

so I made my own ...

ကိုယ့်ဘာသာ ချုပ်ခဲ့တယ်...

with a light-up crown and skirt.

ဟောဒီမှာ မြင်ရတဲ့ အတိုင်းပဲလေ။

Another time,

နောက် တစ်ခါကျတော့၊

I was devastated because my favorite mobile game,

ကျွန်မ အကြိုက်ဆုံး မိုဘိုင်း ဂိမ်း ဖြစ်တဲ့ Flappy Bird

Flappy Bird,

app store ထဲမှာ မရှိလို့

was being taken off the app store.

အကြီးအကျယ် စိတ်ပျက်နေခဲ့တယ်။

(Laughter)

So I was faced with the dilemma

အဲဒါကြောင့် ပြဿနာကြီး ဖြစ်လာတာက

to either never update my phone or never play Flappy Bird again.

ကျွန်မဖုန်းကို ဘယ်တော့မှ အပ်ဒိတ် မလုပ်ဘဲ နေ၊ ဒါမှမဟုတ် Flappy Bird မကစားဘဲ နေမလား။

(Laughter)

Unhappy with both options,

ရွေးချယ်စရာ နှစ်ခုစလုံးက စိတ်ပျက်စရာကြီးပါ။

I did the only thing that made sense to me.

ဒါနဲ့ ကျွန်မ လုပ်လို့ ရတဲ့ အရာ တစ်ခုကိုပဲ လုပ်ခဲ့တယ်။

I made a physical version of Flappy Bird

App Store ကဘယ်တော့မှ ရုပ်သိမ်းမရနိုင်တဲ့

that could never be taken off the app store.

Flappy Bird ရုပ်ပိုင်း မူကွဲ ထုတ်ခဲ့တယ်။

So a few of my friends were also pretty addicted to the game,

ကျွန်မရဲ့ မိတ်ဆွေ တချို့ကလည်း အဲဒီဂိမ်း ကစားတာကို စွဲနေကြတာမို့လို့၊

and I invited them to play as well.

သူတို့ကိုပါ ကစားရန် ဖိတ်ကြားခဲ့ပါတယ်။

And they told me that it was just as infuriating as the original game.

အဲဒါဟာ မူရင်း ဂိမ်းလိုဘဲ ဒေါသထွက်စရာ ဖြစ်ကြောင်း သူတို့က ဆိုကြတယ်။

So I uploaded a demo of this project online,

ဒါနဲ့ အဲဒီပရိုဂျက်ကို ကျွန်မ အွန်လိုင်းမှာ တင်ပေးလိုက်ရာ

and to my surprise it went viral.

တောမီးလို ပျံ့သွားတာ အံ့ဩရာကြီးပဲ။

It had over two million views in just a few days.

ရက်ပိုင်းအတွင်းမှာကို ကြည့်တဲ့သူ နှစ်သန်းကျော်ခဲ့တယ်။

And what's more interesting are people's comments.

လူတွေ ထင်မြင်ချက် ပေးကြတာကလည်း စိတ်ဝင်စားစရာ ကောင်းတယ်။

A lot of people wanted to make it their own,

လူအများကြီးက သူတို့ ကိုယ်ပိုင်ဟာကို လုပ်လိုကြတယ်။

or asked me how it was made.

အဲဒါကို ဘယ်လို လုပ်တာလဲ မေးတာ ရှိကြတယ်။

So this kind of confirmed my idea that through a creative project,

ဖန်တီးရေး ပရိုဂျက်နဲ့ကနေ လူတွေကို စက်ပစ္စည်းတွေ အကြောင်းကို သင်လို့

we can teach people about engineering.

ရနိုင်တယ်ဆိုတဲ့ ကျွန်မအတွေးကို အတည်ပြုချက်ပါ။

With the money made from the viral video,

အဲဒီ ပျံ့သွားတဲ့ ဗီဒီယိုက ရလိုက်တဲ့ ငွေနဲ့

we were able to let students in our classroom

ကျွန်မတို့ အတန်းထဲက ကျောင်းသားတွေကို

all make their own game in a box.

ဘူးထဲမှာ ကိုယ်ပိုင် ဂိမ်း လုပ်နိုင်လာတယ်။

Although it was pretty challenging,

အဲဒါက တကယ့်စိန်ခေါ်မှုကြီး ဖြစ်ခဲ့ပေမဲ့

they learned a lot of new concepts in engineering and programming.

သူတို့ဟာ စက်ပစ္စည်း နဲ့ ပရိုဂရမ် ဆိုင်ရာ အတော်လေး သိနားလည် လာကြတယ်။

And they were all eager to learn so they could finish the game as well.

သူတို့ဟာ အဲဒီလို သင်ယူရတာကို သဘောကျလွန်းလို့ ဂိမ်းကို ပြီးခဲ့ကြတယ်။

So before Flappy Bird Box,

အဲဒီ Flappy Bird Box မတိုင်မီတုန်းက

I had the idea of using creative engineering projects to teach students.

ကျောင်းသားတွေကို သင်ရာတွင် ဖန်တီးရေး စက်မှု ပရိုဂျက်တွေကို သုံးချင်ခဲ့တယ်။

When I was teaching at a middle school,

ကျွန်မ အလယ်တန်းမှာ ပို့ချနေခဲ့စဉ်၊

we asked our students to build a robot from a standard technology kit.

ပုံမှန် နည်းပညာ ဘူးက ပစ္စည်းများဖြင့် ရိုဘော့စက်ရုပ် ဆောက်ခိုင်းခဲ့တယ်။

And I noticed that a lot of them seemed bored.

သူတို့ထဲက တော်တော်များများဟာ စိတ်ရှုပ်နေကြတာ သတိထားမိတယ်။

Then a few of them started taking pieces of paper

နောက်မှာတော့ တချို့က စက္ကူစတွေကို လာယူကြကာ

and decorating their robots.

စက်ရုပ်တွေကို ဆင်ယင်ကြတယ်။

And then more of them got into it,

အဲဒီနောက်မှာ ပိုများတဲ့ ကလေးတွေ ပါလာတယ်၊

and they became more interested in the project.

သူတို့ဟာ ပရိုဂျက်ထဲကို တိုးတိုးပြီး စိတ်ဝင်စားလာကြတယ်။

So I started looking for more creative ways

ဒါနဲ့ ကျွန်မဟာ နည်းပညာတွေကို ကျောင်းသားတွေကို မိတ်ဆက်ပေးရန်

to introduce technology to students.

တီထွင်ရေး နည်းလမ်းတွေကို တိုးတိုးပြီး ရှာလာရတယ်။

What I found was that most technology kits available in school

ကျောင်းမှာ ရှိကြတဲ့ နည်းပညာ ဘူးတွေဟာ

look a little intimidating.

နည်းနည်းလေး စိတ်ပျက်စရာ ကောင်းကြတယ်။

They're all made of plastic parts that you can't customize.

၎င်းတို့ကို မိမိစိတ်ကြိုက် လုပ်ရန် မလွယ်တဲ့ ပလပ်စတစ်နဲ့ လုပ်ထားတာ။

On top of that, they're all very expensive,

ပိုဆိုးတာ ၎င်းတို့ အားလုံးဟာ ဈေးသိပ်ကြီးကြတယ်။

costing hundreds of dollars per kit.

တစ်ဘူးတစ်ဘူးကို ဒေါ်လာ ရာချီ ပေးရတယ်။

So that's certainly not very affordable for most classroom budgets.

Since I didn't find anything,

I decided to make something on my own.

I started with paper and fabric.

စက္ကူ နဲ့ အဝတ်စနဲ့ ကျွန်မ စတင်ခဲ့တယ်။

After all, we all played with those since we were kids,

တကယ်တော့ ကျွန်မတို့ အားလုံး ကလေး ဘဝကတည်းက အဲဒီလို ကစားလာခဲ့ပြီး

and they are also pretty cheap

ဈေးကလည်း အတော်ကလေး ချိုကာ

and can be found anywhere around the house.

အိမ်တိုင်းမှာ ရှာတွေ့နိုင်တဲ့ဟာတွေပါ။

And I prototyped a project

ကျွန်မဟာ စက္ကူ နဲ့ အဝတ်စနဲ့

where students can create a light-up creature

ပြူဝိုင်းနေတဲ့ မျက်လုံးများဖြင့် လင်းလာမယ့် အကောင်ပုံစံ

using fabric and googly eyes.

ပရိုဂျက်ကို ကျောင်းသားတွေအတွက် စီစဉ်ပေးလိုက်တယ်။

They were all helping each other in classrooms,

သူတို့အားလုံး အတန်းထဲမှာ အချင်းချင်း ကူလုပ်ရင်း

and were laughing and discussing the project.

ရယ်မောရင်း နဲ့ ပရိုဂျက်ကို ဆွေးနွေးနေခဲ့ကြတယ်။

And most importantly,

ဒီနေရာမှာ အရေးကြီးဆုံးက

they were able to insert their own creativity into the project.

ပရိုဂျက်ထဲကို ကိုယ်ပိုင် ဖန်တီးမှုကို ထည့်နိုင်ခဲ့ခြင်းပါ။

So because of the success of this project,

အဲဒီပရိုဂျက် အောင်မြင်လာခဲ့လို့ ကျွန်မဟာ

I continued to create more engineering projects

ကျောင်းသားတွေကို စိန်ခေါ်နိုင်ရန် စက်ပစ္စည်းဆိုင်ရာ

to challenge my students.

ပရိုဂျက်တွေကို ဆက်ပြီးတီထွင်နေခဲ့တယ်။

And I also started to take these workshops outside of school

ပြီးတော့ အဲဒီ အလုပ်ရုံတွေကိုလည်း ကျောင်း အပြင် ရပ်ကွက် အသိုင်းအဝိုင်း

and into the community.

ဆီကိုလည်း ထုတ်ယူသွားတယ်။

And something really interesting happened.

တကယ့်ကို စိတ်ဝင်စားစရာ ဖြစ်ပျက်လာတယ်။

I noticed a lot of people from very diverse backgrounds

ဘဝနောက်ခံ အမျိုးမျိုးရှိကြတဲ့ လူတော်တော်များက ကျွန်မတို့

started coming to our workshops.

အလုပ်ရုံတွေကို လာကြတာ သတိထားမိတယ်။

And specifically,

there were a lot more women and minorities than I expected,

and that you wouldn't usually see at a traditional engineering workshop.

Now take a look at this employee report at a major technology company in 2016.

၂၀၁၆ ခုနှစ်တွင် နည်းပညာ ကုမ္ပဏီ တစ်ခုမှ လုပ်သား အစီရင်ခံစာကို ကြည့်ကြည့်ပါ။

Women make up only 19 percent of the technology workforce.

အမျိုးသမီးတွေဟာ နည်းပညာ လုပ်အားထဲမှာ ၁၉ % ပဲ ရှိကြတယ်။

And underrepresented minorities make up only four percent.

တိုင်းရင်းသား လူနည်းစုတွေဆိုရင်လည်း လေး ရာခိုင်နှုန်းဘဲ ရှိပါတယ်။

This statistic might look familiar

ရှင်တို့ အထက်တန်း ကျောင်းထဲက ရိုဘော့ စက်ရုပ်

if you walked into a high school robotics club,

ဒါမှမဟုတ် စက်မှု အတန်းကို သွားကြည့်မယ် ဆိုရင်လည်း

or a college engineering class.

အလားတူ အချိုးအစားကိုပဲ တွေ့ကြရမှာပါ။

Now, there's a wide variety of problems

နည်းပညာ အလုပ်သမားတွေ အကြားမှာ မျိုးမတူကွဲပြားမှု နည်းနေခြင်းကြောင့်

that contribute to the lack of diversity in the technology force.

ပေါ်ပေါက်လာကြတဲ့ ပြဿနာ တွေက မျိုးစုံလှပါတယ်။

Perhaps one solution could be

ဖြေရှင်းနည်း တစ်ခုမှာ ကျောင်းသားတွေကို

to introduce technology to students through creative projects.

နည်းပညာတွေကို တီထွင်ကြံဆရေး ပရိုဂျက်များမှ တဆင့် မိတ်ဆက်ပေးရန် ဖြစ်ပါတယ်။

I'm not saying that this could solve everything,

အဲဒါက အရာရာတိုင်းကို ဖြေရှင်းပေးမယ်လို့ မဆိုလိုပါ

but it could introduce technology

ဒါပေမဲ့ သူ့ဘာသာသူ နည်းပညာကို ကျောင်းမှာ

to people who originally wouldn't be interested in it

တင်ဆက် ပို့ချပေးပုံကို စိတ် မဝင်စားကြသူတို့ကို

because of how it has been portrayed and taught in school.

မိတ်ဆက်ပေးနိုင်တဲ့ နည်းဖြစ်လာနိုင်ပါတယ်။

So how do we start to change the perception of technology?

ဒီတော့ နည်းပညာအား ခံယူမြင်ကြပုံကို ပြောင်းလဲဖို့ ဘယ်လို စတင်ကြမလဲ။

Most students think that it's boring or unwelcoming,

အဲဒါတွေဟာ ကျောင်းသား အများစုအတွက် စိတ်ညစ်စရာ ဒါမှမဟုတ် အလကားလို ထင်ကြလို့

so I have always designed projects following three principles.

ကျွန်မဟာ ပရိုဂျက်တွေကို ပြုစုရာတွင် အခြေခံမူ သုံးခုကို လိုက်နာပါတယ်။

First is having a low floor,

ပထမအချက်က အခြေခံ နိမ့်ရန် လိုပါတယ်၊

and that means this project is easy to get started.

ဒါမှ ပရိုဂျက်ကို လွယ်လွယ်နဲ့ စတင်လို့ ရနိုင်မယ်။

So take a look at this tutorial.

ဒီတော့ ဒီ နည်းပညာ သင်တန်းကို ကြည့်ကြပါ။

The first project we asked students to learn

ကျောင်းသားတွေကို လေ့လာရန် ကျွန်မတို့ ပထမဆုံး

is to make a circuit on paper.

စက္ကူပေါ်မှာ ပတ်လမ်းကို လုပ်ခိုင်းတာပါ။

As you can see, it doesn't take very long to learn,

တွေ့နိုင်သလို သင်ယူဖို့ အချိန် အများကြီး မလိုပါ။

and it's pretty easy even for beginners.

စလုပ်သူအတွက်တောင် အတော်ကလေး လွယ်ပါတယ်။

And having a low floor also means that we're removing the financial barrier

အခြေခံနိမ့်တယ် ဆိုတော့ ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ ပရိုဂျက် မပြီးစီးအောင် ဟန့်တားတတ်တဲ့

that prevents people from completing a project.

So with paper, copper tape, lightbulb and a battery,

people can complete this project for under a dollar.

လူတွေ ဒီပရိုဂျက်ကို တစ်ဒေါ်လာနဲ့ ပြီးအောင် လုပ်နိုင်ကြတယ်။

So second principle is having a high ceiling.

ဒုတိယ အခြေခံမူက အမိုးမြင့်မားရန် လိုပါတယ်။

This means that there's a lot of room to grow,

ကြီးထွားဖို့အတွက် နေရာတွေ လုံလုံလောက် ရှိရန် လိုတယ်၊

and students are constantly being challenged.

ကျောင်းသားတွေဟာ တချိန်လုံး စိန်ခေါ်ခံကြရတယ်။

At first it might just be a light-up creature,

အစပိုင်းတွင် လင်းလာနိုင်တဲ့ အကောင် ဖြစ်နိုင်တယ်၊

but then you can add sensors and microcontrollers,

အဲဒီနောက်မှာတော့ အာရုံခံကိရိယာ တွေနဲ့ မိုက်ခရို ထိန်းစက်တွေ

and start to program the creature to interact with its environment.

ပါလာနိုင်ကာ အကောင်ကို ပတ်ဝန်းကျင်အား တုံ့ပြန်နိုင်အောင် ပရိုဂရမ် လုပ်နိုင်တယ်။

And finally,

နောက်ဆုံး ဖြစ်တဲ့

the third principle is customization.

တတိယ အခြေခံမူက စိတ်တိုင်းကျ စီမံလုပ်ယူရန် ဖြစ်တယ်။

This means that we can make this project relevant to anyone.

ဒီတော့ ဒီလို ပရိုဂျက်ကို ဘယ်သူအတွက်မဆို ရည်ရွယ် လုပ်ပေးနိုင်တယ်။

That's the beauty of using everyday materials;

နေ့စဉ်သုံး ပစ္စည်းတွေကို သုံးနိုင်ခြင်းက သိပ်ကောင်း၊

it's very easy to customize using paper and fabric.

စက္ကူ နဲ့ အဝတ်စကို မိမိစိတ်တိုင်းကျ လုပ်ရတာ သိပ်ကို လွယ်ပါတယ်။

So even if you don't like Flappy Bird,

ရှင်တို့က Flappy Bird ကို မကြိုက် တောင်မှ ရှင်တို့ရဲ့ စိတ်ကြိုက်

you can still make your own game.

ဂိမ်းကို ထုတ်လုပ်နိုင်ကြတယ်။

(ဗီဒီယို)ကျောင်းသား- ဂိမ်းက Justin Bieber အကြောင်းပါ

because he's been speeding,

သူက အရမ်းမြန်လို့ သူ့ကို LAPD မှ နေပြီး

and the object is to prevent him from getting caught by the LAPD --

ဖမ်းမမိရေးက ကျွန်တော်တို့ လုပ်ကိုင်ရမယ့် ရည်ရွယ်ချက် ဖြစ်တယ်--

we're a part of his posse.
