I design engineering projects

for middle school and high school students,

often using materials that are pretty unexpected.

전혀 예상 밖의 재료를 자주 활용하죠.

My inspiration comes from problems in my daily life.

일상에서 겪는 문제들로부터 주로 아이디어를 얻습니다.

For example,

예를 들면요.

one time I needed a costume to go to a comic convention,

만화 박람회에 참여할 의상이 필요한 적이 있었어요.

but I didn't want to spend too much money,

하지만 의상에 많은 돈을 쓰고 싶지는 않았죠.

so I made my own ...

그래서 제가 직접...

with a light-up crown and skirt.

불이 들어오는 왕관과 치마를 만들었죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

Another time,

또 한번은

I was devastated because my favorite mobile game,

좋아하는 모바일 게임 때문에 충격을 받은 적이 있는데요.

Flappy Bird,

플래피 버드라는 게임인데

was being taken off the app store.

앱스토어에서 삭제되었거든요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

So I was faced with the dilemma

저는 딜레마에 빠졌습니다.

to either never update my phone or never play Flappy Bird again.

핸드폰 업데이트를 안 할 것이냐 게임을 포기할 것이냐 선택해야 했죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

Unhappy with both options,

양쪽 모두 포기할 수 없었기에

I did the only thing that made sense to me.

저는 납득할만한 유일한 방법을 선택했습니다.

I made a physical version of Flappy Bird

플래피 버드의 현실 버전을 만들었죠.

that could never be taken off the app store.

앱스토어에서 삭제될 일이 없도록 말이죠.

(Laughter)

(삐~ 소리)

So a few of my friends were also pretty addicted to the game,

제 친구들 중에는 이 게임에 중독된 애들도 있어서

and I invited them to play as well.

그들도 게임을 해보라고 했습니다.

(Video) Friend: Ah!

(영상) 친구: 아악!

(Laughter)

(Video) Friend: What the heck?

(영상) 친구: 뭐 이래!

(Laughter)

And they told me that it was just as infuriating as the original game.

친구들은 이게 원래 게임만큼이나 짜증난다고 하더라고요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

So I uploaded a demo of this project online,

이 프로젝트의 시험판을 인터넷에 공개했더니

and to my surprise it went viral.

놀라운 속도로 퍼져나갔습니다.

It had over two million views in just a few days.

단 며칠만에 조회수가 2백만 건이 넘었죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And what's more interesting are people's comments.

흥미로운 점은 방문자들이 남긴 댓글이었어요.

A lot of people wanted to make it their own,

많은 사람들이 직접 만들고 싶다며 만드는 법을 알려달라고 하더군요.

or asked me how it was made.

So this kind of confirmed my idea that through a creative project,

이 일로 확신하게 된 것은 창조적인 프로젝트를 통해

we can teach people about engineering.

공학을 사람들에게 알릴 수 있다는 점이었습니다.

With the money made from the viral video,

그리고 동영상에서 얻은 수익으로

we were able to let students in our classroom

저희 학급의 학생들은 각자의 게임 상자를

all make their own game in a box.

만들 수 있게 되었죠.

Although it was pretty challenging,

꽤 도전적인 과정이었지만

they learned a lot of new concepts in engineering and programming.

학생들은 공학과 프로그래밍에 대한 새로운 개념을 배울 수 있었습니다.

And they were all eager to learn so they could finish the game as well.

학생들 모두가 열심히 배웠고 게임도 끝까지 성공했죠.

(Laughter)

So before Flappy Bird Box,

플래피 버드 게임상자를 만들기 전에

I had the idea of using creative engineering projects to teach students.

저는 창조적 공학 과제를 통한 교육법에 대해 고민중이었습니다.

When I was teaching at a middle school,

제가 중학생들을 가르칠 때

we asked our students to build a robot from a standard technology kit.

일반적인 제작부품 세트로 로봇을 만들도록 해봤습니다.

And I noticed that a lot of them seemed bored.

그런데 학생 대부분이 지루해 하는 것 같았어요.

Then a few of them started taking pieces of paper

그때 학생 몇 명이 종이 조각으로 로봇을 장식하기 시작했습니다.

and decorating their robots.

And then more of them got into it,

그러자 다른 학생들도 따라 하며 수업에 흥미를 갖기 시작했죠.

and they became more interested in the project.

So I started looking for more creative ways

그 일로 저는 학생들에게 기술에 대해 소개할 수 있는

to introduce technology to students.

좀 더 창의적인 방법을 찾기 시작했습니다.

What I found was that most technology kits available in school

그러다 알게 된 사실은 학교에서 활용하는 대부분의 제작부품 세트들은

look a little intimidating.

다소 주눅들게 한다는 점이었어요.

They're all made of plastic parts that you can't customize.

그 세트들은 변형이 불가능한 플라스틱 부품으로 되어 있고

On top of that, they're all very expensive,

게다가 굉장히 비싸기까지 해서 세트당 가격이 수백 달러에 달하죠.

costing hundreds of dollars per kit.

So that's certainly not very affordable for most classroom budgets.

대부분의 수업 예산으로는 감당할 수 없는 금액입니다.

Since I didn't find anything,

결국 적당한 것을 찾을 수 없어서 제가 직접 만들기로 했습니다.

I decided to make something on my own.

I started with paper and fabric.

먼저 종이와 천을 이용하기 시작했죠.

After all, we all played with those since we were kids,

우리가 어릴 때부터 가지고 놀던 재료이고

and they are also pretty cheap

가격도 굉장히 저렴하고 집에서 쉽게 구할 수 있으니까요.

and can be found anywhere around the house.

And I prototyped a project

시범 프로젝트로 시작한 것은

where students can create a light-up creature

불이 들어오는 동물을 만드는 것이었습니다.

using fabric and googly eyes.

천과 인형눈을 이용해서 말이죠.

They were all helping each other in classrooms,

그 수업 중에 학생들은 서로 도우며

and were laughing and discussing the project.

웃고 즐기며 과제에 대해 토론하기도 했습니다.

And most importantly,

가장 중요한 점은

they were able to insert their own creativity into the project.

그 과제에 자신의 창의성을 담을 수 있다는 것이죠.

So because of the success of this project,

결국 그 프로젝트가 성공적이었기에

I continued to create more engineering projects

더 공학적인 과제를 만들어서

to challenge my students.

제 학생들에게 자극을 주기로 했습니다.

And I also started to take these workshops outside of school

그리고 그 작업공간을 학교를 벗어나 지역 공동체로 옮기기 시작했죠.

and into the community.

And something really interesting happened.

그러자 정말 흥미로운 일이 벌어졌어요.

I noticed a lot of people from very diverse backgrounds

다양한 분야의 많은 사람들이 작업실로 찾아오기 시작했습니다.

started coming to our workshops.

And specifically,

특히

there were a lot more women and minorities than I expected,

그들 가운데에는 예상 밖으로 여성들과 소수자들이 많았습니다.

and that you wouldn't usually see at a traditional engineering workshop.

기존의 공학 작업실에서는 보기 힘든 사람들이었죠.

Now take a look at this employee report at a major technology company in 2016.

주요 기술분야 회사 고용실태에 대한 2016년 보고서를 한번 살펴 볼까요.

Women make up only 19 percent of the technology workforce.

여성 기술 인력은 단지 19%에 불과합니다.

And underrepresented minorities make up only four percent.

드러나지 않는 소수자는 단 4%를 차지하죠.

This statistic might look familiar

이런 통계치는 익숙하실 거예요.

if you walked into a high school robotics club,

고등학교의 로봇 동아리나 대학의 공학 강의실만 봐도 그렇죠.

or a college engineering class.

Now, there's a wide variety of problems

여기에는 기술 인력의 다양성을 저해하는

that contribute to the lack of diversity in the technology force.

여러 문제점이 있습니다.

Perhaps one solution could be

어쩌면 한 가지 해법은

to introduce technology to students through creative projects.

창의적 과제를 통해서 학생들이 기술을 접하도록 하는 것입니다.

I'm not saying that this could solve everything,

이 방법으로 모든 것을 해결하지는 못하겠지만

but it could introduce technology

기술에 무관심했던 사람들에게 기술에 대해 알릴 수 있습니다.

to people who originally wouldn't be interested in it

because of how it has been portrayed and taught in school.

학교에서 이루지는 교육 방법으로는 무관심할 수 밖에 없기 때문이죠.

So how do we start to change the perception of technology?

그럼 기술에 대한 인식을 바꾸려면 무엇부터 시작해야 할까요?

Most students think that it's boring or unwelcoming,

대부분의 학생들은 기술을 지루하고 달갑지 않은 것으로 생각합니다.

so I have always designed projects following three principles.

그래서 저는 과제를 구상할 때 다음의 세 가지 법칙을 따르죠.

First is having a low floor,

첫 번째는 문턱을 낮추는 것입니다.

and that means this project is easy to get started.

시작하기 쉬운 과제여야 한다는 의미죠.

The first project we asked students to learn

첫 번째 과제로서 학생들에게 공부하도록 시킨 것은

is to make a circuit on paper.

종이 위에 전기 회로를 만드는 방법이었습니다.

As you can see, it doesn't take very long to learn,

보시는 것처럼 배우는 데에 많은 시간이 들지도 않고

and it's pretty easy even for beginners.

초보자도 굉장히 쉽게 익힐 수 있죠.

And having a low floor also means that we're removing the financial barrier

문턱을 낮춘다는 것은 과제를 끝마치지 못하게 하는

that prevents people from completing a project.

금전적 장벽을 없앤다는 의미이기도 합니다.

So with paper, copper tape, lightbulb and a battery,

따라서 종이, 구리 테이프, 전구와 건전지만으로

people can complete this project for under a dollar.

1 달러 이하의 비용으로 이 과제를 마칠 수 있죠.

So second principle is having a high ceiling.

그리고 두 번째 규칙은 천장을 높이는 것입니다.

This means that there's a lot of room to grow,

그 의미는 성장할 수 있는 여지를 두면

and students are constantly being challenged.

학생들이 계속해서 도전한다는 뜻이에요.

At first it might just be a light-up creature,

처음에는 불이 들어오는 동물에 그치지만

but then you can add sensors and microcontrollers,

그 다음에는 센서나 제어 장치를 더하게 되고

and start to program the creature to interact with its environment.

주변 환경과 상호작용하는 동물로 프로그래밍할 수 있습니다.

(Laughter)

And finally,

마지막으로

the third principle is customization.

세 번째 규칙은 맞춤형입니다.

This means that we can make this project relevant to anyone.

누구에게나 적용할 수 있는 과제를 만들어야 한다는 의미죠.

That's the beauty of using everyday materials;

일상의 재료를 사용하는 묘미가 바로 여기에 있습니다.

it's very easy to customize using paper and fabric.

종이와 천을 이용하면 쉽게 변형할 수 있죠.

So even if you don't like Flappy Bird,

그래서 플래피 버드 게임을 좋아하지 않는 사람이라도

you can still make your own game.

자신만의 게임을 만들 수 있습니다.

(영상) 학생: 우리가 만든 게임의 주제는 저스틴 비버예요.

because he's been speeding,

왜냐면 그가 과속하고 있기 때문에

and the object is to prevent him from getting caught by the LAPD --

그를 잡으려는 LA 경찰을 장애물로 막는 거죠.

(Laughter)

(Video) Student: Yeah, but he's changing so --

(영상) 학생: 네. 하지만 그가 그렇게 변해버려서

we're a part of his posse.

우리가 그를 지켜주는 거죠.
