I grew up

diagnosed as phobically shy,

and, like at least 20 other people

in a room of this size,

I was a stutterer.

Do you dare raise your hand?

And it sticks with us. It really does stick with us,

لەگەڵمان بەردەوامە، بەڕاستی لەگەڵمان بەردەوام دەبێت،

because when we are treated that way,

چونکە کاتێک بەو شێوەیە مامەڵەمان لەگەڵدا دەکرێت،

we feel invisible sometimes,

or talked around and at.

And as I started to look at people,

which is mostly all I did,

I noticed that some people

really wanted attention and recognition.

Remember, I was young then.

So what did they do?

چیان کرد؟

What we still do perhaps too often.

We talk about ourselves.

And yet there are other people I observed

who had what I called a mutuality mindset.

In each situation, they found a way to talk about us

لە هەموو هەلومەرجێک، ڕێگەیەکیان دەدۆزیەوە تا باسمان بکەن

and create that "us" idea.

و بیرۆکەی "ئێمە" دروست بکەن.

So my idea to reimagine the world

بۆیە، بیرۆکەی من بۆ دووبارە وێناکردنەوەی دونیا

is to see it one where we all become

سەیرکردنیەتی کاتێک هەمووان دەبین بە

greater opportunity-makers with and for others.

دروستکەری هەل لەگەڵ بەک تر و بۆ هەمووان.

There's no greater opportunity

لە ئێستادا هەلی مەزنتر بوونی نییە

or call for action for us now

یان بانگەوازی دەست بەکاربوون بۆ ئێمە

than to become opportunity-makers

لەوەی ببین بە هەل دروستکەر

who use best talents together more often

هەروەک ئەوانەی بەهرەکانیان پێکەوە بەکاردەهێنن

for the greater good

بۆ بەرژەوەندی گشتی

and accomplish things we couldn't have done on our own.

و شتانێک ئەنجام دەدەن ئێمە ناتوانین بە تەنها ئەنجامی بدەین.

And I want to talk to you about that,

دەمەوێت دەربارەی ئەوە قسەتان بۆ بکەم،

because even more than giving,

چونکە تەنانەت زیاتر لە بەخشین،

even more than giving,

is the capacity for us to do something smarter

together for the greater good

that lifts us both up

and that can scale.

That's why I'm sitting here.

But I also want to point something else out:

Each one of you

هەر یەکێک لە ئێوە

is better than anybody else at something.

لە شتێک لە کەسانی دی باشترن.

That disproves that popular notion

بەم شێوەیە، بیردۆزی بەناوبانگ کورت دێنێت

that if you're the smartest person in the room,

کە دەڵێت " ئەگەر تۆ لە ژوورێک زیرەکترین کەس بیت،

you're in the wrong room.

So let me tell you about

کەواتە با باسی

a Hollywood party I went to a couple years back,

ئاهەنگێکی دوو ساڵ لەمەوبەری هۆڵیوود بکەم

and I met this up-and-coming actress,

چاوم بەو خانمە ڕۆڵگێڕە ناسراوه کەوت،

and we were soon talking about something

هەر زوو باسی بابەتێکمان کرد

that we both felt passionately about: public art.

کە هەردووکمان خوولیامان بوو: هونەری گشتی.

And she had the fervent belief

باوەڕێکی داگیرساوی هەبوو

that every new building in Los Angeles

should have public art in it.

She wanted a regulation for it,

and she fervently started —

who is here from Chicago? —

she fervently started talking about

these bean-shaped reflective sculptures

in Millennium Park,

پارکی Millennium ی کرد،

and people would walk up to it

خەڵک بۆ بینینی دەچن

and they'd smile in the reflection of it,

and they'd pose and they'd vamp

and they'd take selfies together,

and they'd laugh.

And as she was talking, a thought came to my mind.

I said, "I know someone you ought to meet.

He's getting out of San Quentin in a couple of weeks" —

"and he shares your fervent desire

that art should engage and enable people to connect."

He spent five years in solitary,

and I met him because I gave a speech at San Quentin,

and he's articulate

and he's rather easy on the eyes because he's buff.

He had workout regime he did every day.

I think she was following me at that point.

I said, "He'd be an unexpected ally."

And not just that. There's James. He's an architect

and he's a professor, and he loves place-making,

and place-making is when you have

I think they'd make good allies.

And indeed they were.

They met together. They prepared.

They spoke in front of the Los Angeles City Council.

And the council members not only passed the regulation,

half of them came down and asked to pose with them afterwards.

نیوەیان چوونە خوارەوە و داوایان کرد دوای دانیشتنەکە لەگەڵیان بدوێن.

They were startling, compelling and credible.

سەرسورهێنەر، بە توانا و لێوەشاوە بوون.

You can't buy that.

باوەڕ بەمە ناکەن.

What I'm asking you to consider

ئەوەی داوای دەکەم ڕەچاوی بکەن

is what kind of opportunity- makers we might become,

ئەوەیە کە چ جۆرە هەلدروستکەرێک دەبین،

because more than wealth

چونکە زیاتر لە سامان

or fancy titles

یان ناوبانگی مەزن

or a lot of contacts, it's our capacity to connect

یان پەیوەندییەکی زۆر، توانای ئێمەیە لە پەیوەندی گرتن

around each other's better side and bring it out.

لە لای لایەنێکی باش و دەرخستنی.

And I'm not saying this is easy,

و من ناڵێم ئەمە سانایە،

and I'm sure many of you have made the wrong moves too

و دڵنیام زۆرێک لە ئێوەش هەنگاوی هەڵەی ناوە

about who you wanted to connect with,

دەربارەی ئەو کەسانەی دەتانەوێت پەیوەندییان لەگەڵ بگرن،

but what I want to suggest is,

بەڵام ئەوەی دەمەوێت پێشنیاری بکەم ئەوەیە،

this is an opportunity.

I started thinking about it

way back when I was a Wall Street Journal reporter

کاتێک پەیامنێری گۆڤاری Wall Street،

and I was in Europe and I was supposed to cover trends

لە ئەوروپا بووم و دەبوو رووماڵی گۆڕانکاریەکان بکەم

and trends that transcended business

و ڕووکاری کارگێڕیە بازرگانیەکان،

or politics or lifestyle.

یاخود سیاسەت یان شێوازی ژیان.

So I had to have contacts

in different worlds very different than mine,

because otherwise you couldn't spot the trends.

And third, I had to write the story

in a way stepping into the reader's shoes,

so they could see how these trends could affect their lives.

That's what opportunity-makers do.

And here's a strange thing:

شتە سەیرەکە لێرەیە:

Unlike an increasing number of Americans

بە پێچەوانەی زیادبوونی ڕێژەی ئەمریکییەکان

who are working and living and playing with people

کە کار دەکەن، دەژین و یاری لەگەڵ خەڵکدا دەکەن

who think exactly like them

ڕێک هاوشێوەی ئەوان بیر دەکەنەوە

because we then become more rigid and extreme,

opportunity-makers are actively seeking situations

with people unlike them,

and they're building relationships,

and because they do that,

they have trusted relationships

where they can bring the right team in

and recruit them to solve a problem better and faster

و ڕاهێنانیان پێ بکەن بۆ باشتر و خێراتر چارەسەری کێشەکان

and seize more opportunities.

و هەلی زیاتر بەدەست بهێنن.

They're not affronted by differences,

بەهۆی جیاوازییەکانەوە بە کەم سەیر ناکرێن،

they're fascinated by them,

بەڵکو سەرسامیانن

and that is a huge shift in mindset,

و ئەمە گۆڕانێکی مەزنی هزرە،

and once you feel it, you want it to happen a lot more.

و کاتێک هەستی پێ دەکەیت، دەتەوێت زیاتر ڕووبدات.

This world is calling out for us to have a collective mindset,

ئەم جیهانە بانگهێشتمان دەکات بۆ بوونی هزرێکی یەکگرتوو،

and I believe in doing that.

باوەڕم بە ئەنجامدانی هەیە.

It's especially important now.

لە کاتێکی ئێستادا زۆر گرینگە.

Why is it important now?

بۆچی ئێستا گرینگە؟

Because things can be devised like drones

چونکە شتی نوێ دەکرێت دابهێنرێت وەک فڕۆکەی بێ فڕۆکەوان

and drugs and data collection,

ماددە بێهۆشکەرەکان و کۆکردنەوەی زانیاری،

and they can be devised by more people

و دەکرێت لە لایەن کەسانی زیاترەوە دابهێنرێت

and cheaper ways for beneficial purposes

و بە ڕێگەی هەرزانتر بۆ مەبەستی ئامانجی سوودمەدنتر

and then, as we know from the news every day,

هەروەک هەموو ڕۆژێک لە هەواڵەکان دەیزانین،

they can be used for dangerous ones.

دەکرێت بۆ کاری مەترسیدارتر بەکاربهێنرێت.

It calls on us, each of us,

بانگهێشتی هەر تاکێک لە ئێمەیە،

to a higher calling.

بۆ بەرزکردنەوەی ستایش کردنمان.

But here's the icing on the cake:

بەڵام کێشەیەک هەیە،

It's not just the first opportunity

تەنها هەلی یەکەم نییە

that you do with somebody else

کە بۆ کەسێکی دی دروست دەکەی

بەڵکو لەوانەیە مەزنترین کار بێت ئەنجامی بدەیت،

that's probably your greatest,

as an institution or an individual.

وەک تاکێک یاخود دامەزراوەیەک.

It's after you've had that experience

ئەمە دوای بە دەستهێنانی ئەزموون

and you trust each other.

It's the unexpected things

that you devise later on

you never could have predicted.

For example, Marty is the husband of that actress I mentioned,

That's how Wally got hired.

Not only that, years later

he was also teaching racquetball.

Years after that,

he was teaching the racquetball teachers.

What I'm suggesting is, when you connect with people

around a shared interest and action,

you're accustomed to serendipitous

and I think that's what we're looking at.

We open ourselves up to those opportunities,

and in this room are key players in technology,

key players who are uniquely positioned to do this,

So here's what I'm calling for you to do.

Remember the three traits of opportunity-makers.

Opportunity-makers keep honing their top strength

هەل دروستکەرەکان هێزەکانیان بەرز دەکەنەوە

and they become pattern seekers.

و دەبن بە گۆڕانخواز.

They get involved in different worlds than their worlds

دەچنە نێو دونیایەکی جیاواز لە دونیای خۆیان

so they're trusted and they can see those patterns,

and they communicate to connect

around sweet spots of shared interest.

So what I'm asking you is,

کەواتە ئەوەی داوای دەکەم ئەوەیە،

the world is hungry.

جیهان برسییە.

I truly believe, in my firsthand experience,

بە تەواوی باوەڕم بە یەکەم ئەزموون هەیە،

the world is hungry for us

دونیا پێویستی بە ئێمەیە

to unite together as opportunity-makers

بۆ ئەوەی وەک هەل دروستکەر یەک بگرین

and to emulate those behaviors

بۆ بەرجەستە کردنی ئەو هەڵسوکەوتانە

as so many of you already do —

وەک بەشێک لە ئێوە کردوویەتی،

I know that firsthand —

دەزانم یەکەم ئەزموون،

and to reimagine a world

بۆ ئەوەی جیهان بە شێوەیەکی دی وێنا بکەین،

where we use our best talents together

کاتێک باشترین تواناکانمان بە یەکەوە بەکاردەهێنین

more often to accomplish greater things together

than we could on our own.

Just remember,

تەنها بیرت بێت،

as Dave Liniger once said,

"You can't succeed

" ناتوانی سەرکەوتوو بیت

coming to the potluck with only a fork."
