I'm a huge believer in hands-on education.

من بڕوایەکی زۆرم بە پەروەردە ھەیە.

But you have to have the right tools.

If I'm going to teach my daughter about electronics,

I'm not going to give her a soldering iron.

And similarly, she finds prototyping boards

really frustrating for her little hands.

So my wonderful student Sam and I

decided to look at the most tangible thing we could think of:

Play-Doh.

And so we spent a summer

looking at different Play-Doh recipes.

And these recipes probably look really familiar

to any of you who have made homemade play-dough --

pretty standard ingredients you probably have in your kitchen.

We have two favorite recipes --

دوو ڕەچەتەی پەسەند--

one that has these ingredients

یەکەم کە ئەو پێکهێنانەی هەیە

and a second that had sugar instead of salt.

و دووەم کە شەکری هەیە لە شوێنی خوێ.

And they're great. We can make great little sculptures with these.

و زۆر باشن. دەتوانین پەیکەرێکی بچوکی باشی لێ دروست بکەین.

But the really cool thing about them is when we put them together.

بەڵام شتە خۆشەکە دەربەرەیان ئەوەیە کاتێک بەیەکەوەیان دادەنێین.

You see that really salty Play-Doh?

ئەم یاریە هەویریە خوێیاویە دەبینیت؟

Well, it conducts electricity.

باشە، کارەبە دەگەیەنێت.

And this is nothing new.

و ئەمە شتێکی نوێ نییە.

It turns out that regular Play-Doh that you buy at the store conducts electricity,

یاری هەویری ئاسایی کە دەیکڕی کارەبا دەگەیەنێت

and high school physics teachers have used that for years.

But our homemade play-dough

actually has half the resistance of commercial Play-Doh.

And that sugar dough?

و ئەم هەویری شەکرە؟

Well it's 150 times more resistant to electric current

لە ڕاستیدا ١٥٠ جار بەهێزترە بۆ بەرگری کارەبا

than that salt dough.

لە هەویری خوێیەکە.

So what does that mean?

کەواتە ئەوە چ دەگەیەنێت؟

Well it means if you them together you suddenly have circuits --

مانای ئەوەیە گەر بەیەکەوەت دانان لە ناکاو خولێکت دەبێت

circuits that the most creative, tiny, little hands

خولێکی زۆرترین دروستکەر، زۆر بچوک و دەستی بچوک

can build on their own.

دەکرێت لە سەرخۆ یان دروست بکرێت.

And so I want to do a little demo for you.

بۆیە دەمەوێت پیشاندانێکی بچوکتان بۆ بکەم.

So if I take this salt dough,

گەر ئەم هەویرە خوێیر ببەم،

again, it's like the play-dough you probably made as kids,

دو,بارە، وەک یاری هەویریە کە بە منداڵی دەتانکرد،

and I plug it in --

و من تۆپەڵی دەکەم --

it's a two-lead battery pack, simple battery pack,

دوو بارگەی قوڕقوشم، و بەرگەیەکی ئاسییە،

you can buy them at Radio Shack

دەتوانیت لە ڕادیۆ شاک بیانکڕیت

and pretty much anywhere else --

و لە هەموو شوێنێکی تر --

we can actually then

لە ڕاستیدا دواتر دەتوانین

light things up.

But if any of you have studied electrical engineering,

بەڵام گەر لە ئەندازیاری کارەبا خوێندوتانە

we can also create a short circuit.

دەتوانیت خولێکی کورت دروست بکەیت.

If I push these together, the light turns off.

پاڵیان پێوەدەنێم بەیەکەوە، ڕوناکیەکان دەکوژێنەوە.

Right, the current wants to run through the play-dough, not through that LED.

ڕاستە، تەزوەکە بە ناو یاری هەویرەکە دەڕوات

If I separate them again, I have some light.

گەر د,وبارە جیایان بکەمەوە، کەمێک ڕووناکیم دەبێ

Well now if I take that sugar dough,

گەر ئێستا هەویری شەکرەکە ببەم،

the sugar dough doesn't want to conduct electricity.

هەویری شەکرەکە کارەبا ناگەیەنێت.

It's like a wall to the electricity.

وەک بەربەست وایە بۆ کارەبا.

If I place that between, now all the dough is touching,

گەر لە نێوان هەویرەکەی دانێم، بەرکەوتنە،

but if I stick that light back in,

بەڵام گەر جارێکیتر ڕوناکیەکە بکەمەوە ناوی،

I have light.

ڕووناکیم هەیە.

In fact, I could even add some movement to my sculptures.

لە ڕاستیدا،دەتوانم جوڵەی زیاتری بۆ زیاد بکەم.

If I want a spinning tail, let's grab a motor,

گەر کلکێکی جوڵاوم بوێت، بزوێنێک دەهێنین،

put some play-dough on it, stick it on

کەمێک یاری هەویری لەسەر دانێ، پێوەی بلکێنە،

and we have spinning.

و بادانمان هەیە.

(Applause)

And once you have the basics,

و کاتێک سەرەتایەکانت هەیە،

we can make a slightly more complicated circuit.

دەتوانین خولێکی ئاڵۆزتر دروست بکەین.

We call this our sushi circuit. It's very popular with kids.

ناوی دەنێن خولی سوشی. زۆە ناودارە لای منداڵان.

I plug in again the power to it.

دووبارە هێزی پێ دەدەم.

And now I can start talking about parallel and series circuits.

ئێستا دەتوانم باسی خولی هاوڕێک و زنجیرە بکەم.

I can start plugging in lots of lights.

دەتوانم تۆپەڵی بکەمەوە بۆ ڕووناکیەکی زۆر.

And we can start talking about things like electrical load.

دەتوانین قسە بکەین دەربارەی باری کارەبایی.

What happens if I put in lots of lights

چی دەبێت گەر ڕوناکیەکی زۆری بکەمە ناو

and then add a motor?

دواتر بزوێنێک دانێم؟

It'll dim.

تەڵخ دەبێت.

We can even add microprocessors

تەنانەت دەتوانین چارەسەری وردیش زیاد بکەین

and have this as an input

و هەمان بێت وەک زانیاری دەرەکی

and create squishy sound music that we've done.

ودروست کردنی میوزیکی ئارامبەخش کە کردومانە.

You could do parallel and series circuits

دەتتوانی خولی هاوڕێک و زنجیرە بکەیت

for kids using this.

بۆ ئە منداڵانەی ئەمە بەکار دەهێنن.

So this is all in your home kitchen.

کەواتە ئەمە هەموو لە چێشخانەی ماڵەکتدا هەیە.

We've actually tried to turn it into an electrical engineering lab.

لە ڕاستیدا هەوڵمانداوە بیگۆڕین بۆ تاقیگەی ئەندازیاری کارەبایی.

We have a website, it's all there. These are the home recipes.

ماڵپەڕێکمان هەیە، هەمووی لەوێیە. ئەمانە ڕەچەتەی ماڵەوەن.

We've got some videos. You can make them yourselves.

هەندێک گرتەمان هەیە. دەتوانن خۆتان بیانکەن.

And it's been really fun since we put them up to see where these have gone.

زۆر چێژبەخش بووە لەو کاتەوەی بەیەکەوە بوون بۆ بینینی گەیشتوون بە کوێ

We've had a mom in Utah who used them with her kids,

دایکێک لە یوتاوا لەگەڵ منداڵەکانی بەکاریهێنا،

to a science researcher in the U.K.,

بۆ توێژەرێکی زانستی لە بەڕیتانیا،

and curriculum developers in Hawaii.

و بەرنامەی پێشکەوتوان لە هاوایی.

So I would encourage you all to grab some Play-Doh,

بۆیە هەموتان هان دەدەم بۆهێنانی یاری هەویر،

grab some salt, grab some sugar and start playing.

کەمێک خوێ، و شەکر بهێنە و دەست بکە بەیاری.

We don't usually think of our kitchen as an electrical engineering lab

هەمیشە وەک تاقیگەیەکی ئەلیکترۆنی بیر لە چێشتخانەکەمان ناکەینەوە

or little kids as circuit designers,

یان منداڵی بچوک وەک دروستکەری خول،

but maybe we should.

بەڵام ڕەنگە پێویست بێت وابکەین.
