About four years ago, the New Yorker published an article

Everyone was very excited about this archaeological find,

because it meant that they might finally be able

See, while museums all over the world

have dodo skeletons in their collection, nobody --

on the island of Mauritius -- has a skeleton that's made

Well, this isn't exactly true.

The fact is, is that the British Museum

Not quite the whole truth. Anyway.

and I'm one of the people that thinks that Tina Brown

저는 티나 브라운이 분명 대단한 사람이라 생각합니다.

was great for bringing photos to the New Yorker,

이런 사진을 뉴요커지에 실어서, 제 인생을

because this photo completely rocked my world.

뒤 흔들어 놓았다는 점에서 말이죠.

I became obsessed with the object --

전 이후로 이 주제에 완전히 빠져버렸습니다.

not just the beautiful photograph itself,

이 아름다운 사진 그 자체가 아니구요.

and the color, the shallow depth of field, the detail that's visible,

색감, 이 깊이감과 저기 보이는

the wire you can see on the beak there

부리쪽에 있는 철사같은 것 때문이었어요.

that the conservator used to put this skeleton together --

아마 이게 이 뼈들을 붙어있게 해줬을겁니다.

there's an entire story here.

이게 뭔 얘기인지 알아보죠.

And I thought to myself,

저는 생각했어요.

wouldn't it be great

만약 내가 나만의 도도새의 뼈를 가지면

if I had my own dodo skeleton?

좋지 않을까? 라고말이죠.

(Laughter)

I want to point out here at this point that

여기서 하나 말씀드리고 싶은건,

I've spent my life obsessed

저는 항상 이야기가 있는 주제

by objects and the stories that they tell,

에 대해 항상 매료되었었고,

and this was the very latest one.

바로 이 도도새가 최근에 절 그렇게 만들었습니다.

So I began looking around for --

그래서 저는 주위를 살피기 시작했죠.

to see if anyone sold a kit,

some kind of model that I could get,

and I found lots of reference material, lots of lovely pictures.

No dice: no dodo skeleton for me. But the damage had been done.

I had saved a few hundred photos of dodo skeletons

into my "Creative Projects" folder --

"창조적프로젝트"라는 제 컴 폴더에 저장해놨었어요.

it's a repository for my brain, everything that I could possibly be interested in.

이 폴더는 제가 흥미로워하는 모든것에 대한

Any time I have an internet connection,

there's a sluice of stuff moving into there,

everything from beautiful rings to cockpit photos.

because I couldn't afford the one on eBay.

that's one I hand-drew myself. There's the dodo skeleton folder.

This folder has 17,000 photos --

over 20 gigabytes of information --

20기가가 넘는 정보로 차있어요.

and it's growing constantly.

그리고 계속 늘어가고 있습니다.

And one day, a couple of weeks later, it might have been

그 일이 있은 후, 그게 몇 주 후 였는지

maybe a year later, I was in the art store with my kids,

1년 후 였는지 몰라도, 제가 아이들과 미술상에

and I was buying some clay tools -- we were going to have a craft day.

갔고, 점토제작 공구를 사려고 했죠, 아마 뭔가를 만들려고 했나봐요.

I bought some Super Sculpeys, some armature wire, some various materials.

Super Sculpeys(점토)를 사고, 뼈대용 철사같은 것들도 샀죠.

And I looked down at this Sculpey, and I thought,

그리고 점토를 바라보면서 이렇게 생각했어요.

maybe,

어쩌면 말이지...

yeah, maybe I could make my own dodo skull.

그래! 어쩌면 내가 도도새의 골격을 만들 수도 있겠는걸?

I should point out at this time -- I'm not a sculptor;

분명히 지적하고싶은건요. 전 조각가는 아닙니다.

I'm a hard-edged model maker.

전 직업적인 소품 제작자입니다.

You give me a drawing, you give me a prop to replicate,

여러분이 그림을 주고 그걸 복제할만한 소도구들을 주면

you give me a crane, scaffolding, parts from "Star Wars" --

그리고 크레인과 발판을 주고, 스타워즈 같이요.

especially parts from "Star Wars" --

그래요. 이 스타워즈의 한 부분같이요.

I can do this stuff all day long.

전 이걸 하루종일도 할 수 있어요.

It's exactly how I made my living for 15 years.

이게 바로 제가 15년동안 제가 하던 일입니다.

But you give me something like this --

하지만, 여러분이 이런걸 준다면

my friend Mike Murnane sculpted this;

it's a maquette for "Star Wars, Episode Two" --

this is not my thing --

this is something other people do -- dragons, soft things.

이건 딴 사람이 만든거예요. 기병이예요. 부드러운 재질이예요.

However, I felt like I had looked at enough photos of dodo skulls

어쨌든, 전 충분히 많은 도도새 사진을 봤다고 생각했거든요.

to actually be able to

그래서 그 해부학적 구조를 충분히 이해하고

understand the topology and perhaps replicate it --

그걸 만들어낼 수 있을거 같았어요.

I mean, it couldn't be that difficult.

내말은, 그리 어렵지 않았을 거였죠.

So, I started looking at the best photos I could find.

제가 가진 가장 좋은 사진을 주위깊게 보기 시작했어요.

I grabbed all the reference,

그리고 참고자료도 손에 넣으려했죠.

and I found this lovely piece of reference.

그랬더니, 괜찮은 자료들이 나오더군요.

This is someone selling this on eBay;

어떤 사람이 이걸 이베이에서 팔더군요.

it was clearly a woman’s hand, hopefully a woman's hand.

여자더라구요. 분명 여자 손 맞죠? 그러길 바래요.

Assuming it was roughly the size of my wife's hand,

거의 제 마누라 손이랑 비슷한 크기네요.

I made some measurements of her thumb, and I scaled them out to the size of the skull.

제가 이 여자 엄지손가락에 크기를 측정했고, 그걸 기준으로 뼈의 크기를 어림짐작해봤죠.

I blew it up to the actual size, and I began using that,

저는 사진을 실제크기로 만들었고, 그걸 사용하기로 했습니다.

along with all the other reference that I had, comparing it to it

그기고 다른 참고자료랑 비교도 했습니다.

as size reference for figuring out exactly how big the beak should be,

그것들을 이 부리가 얼마나 큰지를 알기위한 기준으로 삼았죠.

exactly how long, etc.

그게 정확히 얼마나 긴지 등등...

And over a few hours, I eventually achieved

몇 시간 후에, 마침내 꽤나 잘 만들어진

what was actually a pretty reasonable dodo skull. And I didn't mean to continue, I --

도도새의 골격을 알게되었어요. 근데 여기서 더이상 진행하진 않았죠.

it's kind of like, you know, you can only clean a super messy room

아시잖아요. 방을 치울땐 하나씩 하나씩 줍잖아요. 마찬가지로 저도 결코

by picking up one thing at a time; you can't think about the totality.

첨부터 한꺼번에 뭘 해야겠다라고 생각한건 아녔죠.

I wasn't thinking about a dodo skeleton;

전 첨부터 도도새 뼈를 생각하진 않았어요.

I just noticed that as I finished this skull,

그 지지대로 쓸 철사로된 골격을 다 만들고서야 알았죠.

the armature wire that I had been used to holding it up

그 지지대는 도도새의 척추에 있어야 되는 곳

was sticking out of the back just where a spine would be.

바로 뒤에 붙어있었어요.

And one of the other things I'd been interested in and obsessed with over the years

바로 이 척추와 뼈 구조가 제가 도도새 자료 수 백개를 수집하면서

is spines and skeletons, having collected a couple of hundred.

흥미로워 했던 바로 그 주제 였습니다.

I actually understood the mechanics

전 이 척추뼈의 구조를 모방할 수 있는 구조적 지식을

of vertebrae enough to kind of start to imitate them.

이해하고 있었습니다.

And so button by button,

그래서 한땀 한땀

vertebrae by vertebrae, I built my way down.

척추뼈 하나 하나, 만들었습니다.

And actually, by the end of the day, I had a reasonable skull,

그러다 보니까, 그 날 느지막히 그럴듯한 구조가 만들어졌습니다.

a moderately good vertebrae and half of a pelvis.

꽤 괜찮은 척추와 절반정도의 골반을 제작했습니다.

And again, I kept on going, looking for more reference,

이 일은 계속 되었고, 더 많은 참고자료를 보았습니다.

every bit of reference I could find -- drawings, beautiful photos.

그림들과 멋진 사진들 하나 하나를 주위깊게 봤어요.

This guy -- I love this guy! He put a dodo leg bones on a scanner

전 이 양반 진짜 사랑합니다. 도도새의 다리뼈를 스캔한거죠.

with a ruler.

그것도 자를 이용해서 말이예요.

This is the kind of accuracy that I wanted,

이게 바로 제가 필요한 정확도라는 겁니다.

and I

첨부터 끝까지

replicated every last bone and put it in.

저는 모든 뼈들을 복제했고 붙여나갔죠.

And after about six weeks,

그 후에.. 아마도 6 주 정도 걸렸나봐요.

I finished, painted, mounted

이 일을 끝냈고, 칠을하고 고정을 시켰죠.

my own dodo skeleton.

이게 바로 제가 만든 도도새 뼈구조예요.

You can see that I even made a museum label for it

보시다시피, 박물관 표시까지 만들었어요.

that includes a brief history of the dodo.

이렇게 된 건 뒷이야기가 있습니다.

And TAP Plastics made me -- although I didn't photograph it --

바로 TAP 플라스틱을 얻기 위해서였죠.

a museum vitrine.

박물관에서 쓰는 케이스예요.

I don't have the room for this in my house,

집에 이걸 둘데가 없어요.

but I had to finish what I had started.

근데 시작한걸 끝내야만 했죠.

And this actually represented kind of a sea change to me.

그리고 이건 저에게 매번 일어나는 일이예요.

Again, like I said, my life has been about

다시말해서, 저는 스토리가 있는 무엇에 매혹되고

being fascinated by objects and the stories that they tell,

그 매혹된 무언가를 위해

and also making them for myself, obtaining them,

그걸 제가 만들어보고, 그걸 갖는거죠.

appreciating them and diving into them.

그리고 그걸 좋아하게되고 완전히 빠지게 됩니다.

And in this folder, "Creative Projects,"

그리고 그것들은 이 "창조적프로젝트" 폴더에 들어가는거죠.

there are tons of projects that I'm currently working on,

사실 제가 하고 있는 프로젝트가 진짜로 많아요.

projects that I've already worked on, things that I might want to work on some day,

이미 끝난 것도 있고, 진행 중인 것도 있고, 언젠가 하게될 것도 있죠.

and things that I may just want to find and buy and have

그저 찾거나, 사거나, 보거나, 만지기만해도

and look at and touch.

그만인 것들도 있어요.

But now there was potentially this new category of things

하지만 제가 이렇게 직접 제작하는 것과 같이

that I could sculpt

새로운 카테고리도 있었습니다.

that was different, that I -- you know,

이건 아무래도 좀 다르죠.

I have my own R2D2, but that's --

전 제가 만든 R2D2도 있어요.

honestly, relative to sculpting, to me, that's easy.

솔직히, 다른 작업물에 비하면 이건 쉬운거죠.

And so I went back and looked through my "Creative Projects" folder,

저의 "창조적 프로젝트" 폴더를 다시 열어봤습니다.

and I happened across the Maltese Falcon.

그랬더니, Maltese Falcon(몰타매)에 대한 걸 보게되었죠.

Now, this is funny for me:

제가 Hammett(영화 Maltese Falcon 의 원작자)의 소설에 등장하는

to fall in love with an object from a Hammett novel,

소품에 빠지는 건 좀 웃기는 일이예요

because if it's true that the world is divided into two types of people,

만약에 세상에 2종류만 있다라고 한다면요.

Chandler people and Hammett people, I am absolutely a Chandler person.

Chandler (추리소설작가) 를 좋아하는 사람과, Hammett 을 좋아하는 사람으로 나뉜다면,

But in this case,

저는 분명히 Chandler 쪽이거든요. 근데 이번엔 좀 달랐어요.

it's not about the author, it's not about the book or the movie or the story,

전 작가들이나 책이나 영화에 대해 말하는건 아니예요.

it's about the object in and of itself.

그 안의 소품이나 그 소품 자체를 말하는 거죠.

And in this case, this object is --

이런건 말이죠. 이런 소품은

plays on a host of levels.

만들어 지기 까지 몇 단계를 거칩니다.

First of all, there's the object in the world.

그 첫번 째는, 이미 존재하는 것으로부터죠.

This is the "Kniphausen Hawk."

이건 Kniphausen Hawk 입니다.

It is a ceremonial pouring vessel

어떤 의식에서 쓰는 용기같은겁니다.

made around 1700 for a Swedish Count,

1700 년경에 스웨덴의 공작이 만든겁니다.

and it is very likely the object from which

그리고 이건 Hammett 상상했던 몰타매와

Hammett drew his inspiration for the Maltese Falcon.

아주 비슷할겁니다.

Then there is the fictional bird, the one that Hammett created for the book.

그리고, 여기 가공의 새가 있습니다. 이건 Hammett 이 그의 책에 묘사한거죠.

Built out of words, it is the engine

글로 묘사된 것을 바탕으로 제작하는것, 이게 그 책에서의 중요한

that drives the plot of his book and also the movie,

이야기의 흐름이 되고, 나중에 영화로도 제작됩니다.

in which another object is created:

그 영화에서 다른 것들이 만들어 집니다.

a prop that has to represent the thing that Hammett created out of words,

이것이 바로 Hammett 가 만들었던 것이죠.

inspired by the Kniphausen Hawk, and this represents the falcon in the movie.

Kniphauser Hawk 로부터 영감을 받았고, 이게 곧 영화에서 그 매가 됩니다.

And then there is this fourth level, which is

그리고나서, 네번째 단계가 있는데,

a whole new object in the world:

세상에 존재하지 않는 완전히 새로운 물건이죠.

the prop made for the movie, the representative of the thing,

무엇의 대표성을 갖는 영화를 위해 만들어진 소품은

becomes, in its own right,

그 나름의 존재가치를 갖는

a whole other thing,

완전히 새로운 어떤 것이 되고

a whole new object of desire.

이를 제작하고싶은 순수한 욕구로 이어집니다.

And so now it was time to do some research.

이 때가 바로 연구에 돌입하는 시기였습니다.

I actually had done some research

사실 몇몇의 연구를 이미 몇 년 전에 했었죠.

a few years before -- it's why the folder was there.

왜냐면 제 컴에 그 폴더가 있었으니까요.

I'd bought a replica, a really crappy replica,

저는 질 낮은 복제품을

of the Maltese Falcon on eBay,

이베이에서 샀습니다.

and had downloaded enough pictures to actually

그리고 역시나 엄청많은 사진들을 다운받았죠.

have some reasonable reference.

참고자료로 쓸려구요.

But I discovered,

근데 그 연구작업이 계속되면서

in researching further,

한가지 발견한 사실이 있습니다.

really wanting precise reference, that

제가 그렇게 가지고 싶던, 가장 정확한 그 표본이

one of the original lead birds

크리스티 경매장에서

had been sold at Christie's in 1994,

1994년에 팔려버린거죠.

and so I contacted an antiquarian bookseller

그래서 전 골동품 도서를 취급하는 사람을 만났습니다.

who had the original Christie's catalogue,

그 사람은 크리스티 경매장의 오리지널 카타로그를

and in it I found this magnificent picture,

가지고 있었고, 저는 굉장한 사진을 보게되었습니다.

which included a size reference.

그 몰타매의 정확한 크기에 대한 정보가 담겨있었습니다.

I was able to scan the picture, blow it up to exactly full size.

바로 그 사진을 스캔했고, 실제 사이즈로 확대해봤죠.

I found other reference. Avi [Ara] Chekmayan,

저는 다른 참고자료도 찾을 수 있었는데,

a New Jersey editor, actually found this

뉴져지 지의 편집자인 Avi Chekmayan 이 발견한

resin Maltese Falcon

합성수지로 만든 몰타매였어요.

at a flea market in 1991,

1991 년에 벼룩시장에서 구했다고 하더군요.

although it took him five years

이것이 크리스티에서 진품으로

to authenticate this bird to

인정받기까지 장장 5년이

the auctioneers' specifications,

걸렸다고 합니다.

because there was a lot of controversy about it.

왜냐면, 거기에 많은 논쟁이 있었거든요.

It was made out of resin, which wasn't a common material for movie props

이런 합성 수지는 그 당시 영화판에서

about the time the movie was made.

흔하게 쓰이던 재료가 아니었기 때문이죠.

It's funny to me that it took a while to authenticate it,

저는 진품확인이 왜 그렇게 오래걸렸는지 모르겠습니다.

because I can see it compared to this thing,

이것과 비교할 수 있잖아요.

and I can tell you -- it's real, it's the real thing,

분명한건, 그건 진짜였어요

it's made from the exact same mold that this one is.

그건 여기 이것과 정확히 동일한 주물로 만들어졌거든요.

In this one, because the auction was actually so controversial,

경매장에선 이 문제가 워낙에 논쟁거리라서

Profiles in History, the auction house that sold this --

경매회사는 이걸 팔아버렸습니다.

I think in 1995 for about 100,000 dollars --

십만달러(1억 3천만원) 정도에 1995년에 팔렸다는군요.

they actually included -- you can see here on the bottom --

여기 아래를 보시면

not just a front elevation, but also

앞쪽 각 뿐만아니라

a side, rear

여기 옆이랑, 뒤랑

and other side elevation.

그리고 다른 쪽 각도까지 나와있음을 알 수 있어요.

So now, I had all the topology I needed

이제 전 제가 필요한 그 매의 생김새를 알게된 겁니다.

to replicate the Maltese Falcon.

이 몰타매를 복제할 수 있는거죠.

What do they do, how do you start something like that? I really don't know.

그들이 했던걸, 어떻게 당신은 시작할 수 있냐고요? 진짜로 잘 몰라요.

So what I did was, again, like I did with the dodo skull,

제가 했던건 말이죠. 도도새의 경우와 마찬가지로

I blew all my reference up to full size,

제가 가진 참고 사진들을 실제크기로 만든다음에

and then I began cutting out the negatives and using

음각으로 새겨넣고

those templates as shape references.

그 틀이 하나의 기준이 되는거죠.

So I took Sculpey, and I built a big block of it,

그리고 나서 점토를 이용해서 하나의 큰 블럭을 만듭니다.

and I passed it through until, you know, I got the right profiles.

이걸 제대로된 모양새가 될 때까지 바릅니다.

And then slowly, feather by feather, detail by detail,

깃털 하나하나 디테일을 천천히 만들어가죠.

I worked out and achieved --

이렇게 작업을 하게 됩니다.

working in front of the television and Super Sculpey --

텔레비젼 앞에서 작업을 하기도 하구요.

here's me sitting next to my wife --

제 옆에 있는건 제 마누라입니다.

it's the only picture I took of the entire process.

이건 제 작업을 통틀어 유일한 사진이예요.

As I moved through, I achieved

이렇게 일을 끝마치면

a very reasonable facsimile of the Maltese Falcon.

저는 꽤 괜찮은 몰타매의 복제품을 얻게됩니다.

But again, I am not a sculptor,

다시말씀드리지만, 전 조각가는 아닙니다.

and so I don't know a lot of the tricks, like,

그래서 전 많은 기술들을 가지고 있진않아요.

I don't know how my friend Mike gets beautiful, shiny surfaces with his Sculpey;

I certainly wasn't able to get it.

So, I went down to my shop,

and I molded it and I cast it in resin,

because in the resin, then, I could absolutely get the glass smooth finished.

합성수지이기때문에, 유리같이 부드러운 마감을 할 수있어요.

Now there's a lot of ways to fill and get yourself a nice smooth finish.

괜찮은 마감효과를 위해 여러 방법이 있는데요.

My preference is about 70 coats of this --

저는 분무기를 이용해서

matte black auto primer.

무광택 블랙 스프레이를 뿌립니다.

I spray it on for about three or four days, it drips to hell,

이걸 3,4일 동안 뿌려주고, 담그죠

but it allows me a really, really nice gentle sanding surface

근데, 이렇게하면 아주 매끄러운 표면이 만들어져요.

and I can get it glass-smooth.

거의 유리와 같이 반짝이는 걸 얻을 수 있죠.

Oh, finishing up with triple-zero steel wool.

마지막으로 철솜으로 끝마무리를 합니다.

Now, the great thing about getting it to this point was that

이 모든 작업중에 제일 멋진 건 말이죠.

because in the movie, when they finally bring out the bird at the end,

영화 끝부분에 보면 이 몰타매가 나오거든요?

And it's beautiful. And I can state with authority

It would seem that the object of desire

So here I had this Falcon,

And it turned out that one of the guys there,

a friend of mine that I never actually met,

but befriended through some prop deals, was the manager of a local foundry.

He took my master Falcon pattern,

he actually did lost wax casting

and this is the bronze I got back.

And this is, after some acid etching, the one that I ended up with.

이걸로 부식 기법을 했더니, 이런게 마침내 나오더군요.

And this thing, it's deeply, deeply satisfying to me.

Now, here's the most recent progression of Falcons.

On the far left is a piece of crap -- a replica I bought on eBay.

There's my somewhat ruined Sculpey Falcon,

because I had to get it back out of the mold. There's my first casting,

there's my master and there's my bronze.

There's a thing that happens when you mold and cast things,

which is that every time you throw it into silicone and cast it in resin,

you lose a little bit of volume, you lose a little bit of size.

And when I held my bronze one up against my Sculpey one,

it was shorter by three-quarters of an inch.

Yeah, no, really, this was like aah --

why didn't I remember this?

So what do I do? I figure I have two options.

One, I can fire a freaking laser at it,

which I have already done,

to do a 3D scan -- there's a 3D scan of this Falcon.

I had figured out the exact amount of shrinkage I achieved

얼마나 이게 밀랍에서 동상으로 될 때까지

going from a wax master to a bronze master

얼만큼 쪼그라들었는지 이미 알고있다는 말이죠.

and blown this up big enough to make

그래서 이걸 충분히 크게 만들어서

a 3D lithography master of this,

3차원 인쇄기술을 위한 Master 를 만들 수 있어요.

which I will polish, then I will send to the mold maker

그걸 곱게 가공하고 주물을 만들면

and then I will have it done in bronze. Or:

이렇게 동상을 제작할수가 있는거죠. 아니면

There are several people who own originals,

진품을 가지고 있는 사람이 있다면

and I have been attempting to contact them and reach them,

그래서 제가 그 사람들을 만나서

hoping that they will let me spend a few minutes

그 중에 하나를 운좋게 얻어서

in the presence of one of the real birds, maybe to take a picture,

사진을 찍을 수 있다면 말이죠.

or even to pull out the hand-held laser scanner

that I happen to own that fits inside a cereal box,

and could maybe, without even touching their bird, I swear,

get a perfect 3D scan. And I'm even willing to sign pages
