we would hear guns.

Elections were supposed to happen.

선거가 있을 무렵에

We had young people going in the street,

거리를 메우던 청년들이 습격을 당했고

they were having strikes.

And most of the young people died.

그들 중 대부분은 사망했어요.

SAS: We boarded a vehicle.

사히다: 사람들로 꽉 찬 차에 몸을 실었어요.

It was overloaded.

People were running for their lives.

살려고 도망치는 사람들로 가득했지요.

That is how I fled from Somalia.

저는 그렇게 소말리아를 벗어났어요.

My mom missed me.

엄마는 절 보고 싶어도 제 행방을 알 길이 전혀 없으셨죠.

Nobody told her where I went.

NDD: The fact that we did not go to school,

노리아: 학교는 물론이고

we couldn't go to the market, we were just stuck home

장조차 보러 갈 수 없어 집에 갇혀 있다 보니

made me realize that if I got an option to go for something better,

지금보다 더 나은 미래가 올 수 있다면 일단 도전해보는 게 낫겠다고 깨달았죠.

I could just go for it and have a better future.

Ignazio Matteini: Globally, displaced people in the world

have been increasing.

Now there are almost 60 million people displaced in the world.

현재 전 세계적으로 6천만 명에 달하는 난민이 있지만

And unfortunately, it doesn't stop.

CR: Our audacious project was to really test

Southern New Hampshire University's Global Education Movement's

ability to scale,

to bring bachelor's degrees and pathways to employment

SAS: It was almost impossible, as a refugee person,

to further my education and to make my career.

and I am from Somalia.

I was nine years old when I came to Kakuma,

and I started going to school at 17.

Now I am doing my bachelor degree

I'm doing my bachelor of arts in communications

with a concentration in business.

CR: We are serving students across five different countries:

크리스티나: 레바논, 케냐, 말라위, 르완다, 남아프리카

Lebanon, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda and South Africa.

이 5개국의 국제 학생들이 저희 서던 뉴햄프셔 대학에 다닙니다.

Really proud to have 800 AA grads to over 400 bachelor's graduates

이들 중 800명이 2년제 학위를, 400명 이상이 4년제 학위를 취득했고,

and nearly 1,000 students enrolled right now.

무려 1천 명이나 되는 학생들이 등록한 것에 자부심을 느낍니다.

So, the magic of this is that we're addressing refugee lives as they exist.

난민들의 교육 문제를 그 자리에서 해결한다는 게 저희 운동의 특이점이죠.

There are no classes.

수업이나 강의, 제출 기간, 심지어 기말 시험도 없습니다.

There are no lectures.

There are no due dates.

There are no final exams.

This degree is competency-based and not time-bound.

시간 기준이 아닌 능력 기반의 학사취득 체계라서

You choose when you start your project.

프로젝트의 시작과 접근법을 학생 스스로가 정합니다.

You choose how you're going to approach it.

NDD: When you open the platform, that's where you can see the goals.

크리스티나: 저희 대학만의 차별화되는 교육법이 있다면

to provide all the wraparound supports.

That includes academic coaching.

It means psychosocial support,

that's really resulting in the 95 percent graduation,

I've learned so many things out of the project and in the real world.

프로젝트는 물론 실질적인 경험도 많이 쌓고 있는 중입니다.

CR: The structured internship is really an opportunity

크리스티나: 이러한 취업 연계 인턴십으로

for students to practice their skills,

학생들이 그간 배웠던 기술을 적용할 수 있는 좋은 기회이자,

for us to create connections between that internship

학교로서는 인턴십과 향후의 취업 기회 사이에서

and a later job opportunity.

네트워크를 구축할 수 있는 기회죠.

This is a model that really stops putting time

저희 SNHU의 교육 모델은 날짜와 대학 정책, 절차가 중심이 아닌

and university policies and procedures at the center

and instead puts the student at the center.

IM: The SNHU model is a big way to shake the tree.

It's a huge shake to the traditional way of having tertiary education here.

from these vulnerable and refugee communities.

취약계층 및 난민 출신 학생들의 삶이 변화하고 개선될 수 있습니다.

NDD: If I get the degree,

노리아: 학위를 취득하면

I can just come back and work everywhere that I want.

돌아와서 제가 원하는 어느 곳에서든 일할 수 있어요.

I can go for a masters confidently in English,

이젠 자신감을 갖고 영어로 석사에 도전할 수도 있고요.

which is something that I would not have dreamt of before.

예전엔 꿈도 못꿨던 일이었죠.

And I have the confidence and the skills required

게다가 실제 현장에 나가

to actually go out and just tackle the workplace

업무를 해결할 수 있는 자신감과 능력도 키웠어요.

without having to fear that I can't make it.

해낼 수 없을 거라는 두려움도 이젠 없고요.

SAS: I always wanted to work with the community.

사히다: 저는 지역공동체와 함께하는 일을 했으면 좋겠다고 늘 생각했기에

I want to establish a nonprofit.

비영리단체를 설립하고 싶어요.

We advocate for women's education.

또한 여성 교육을 공개적으로 지지하고 있고요.

I want to be someone who is, like, an ambassador

여성들에게 배움을 장려하고,

and encourage them to learn

지금 시작해도 절대 늦지 않았다고 조언해 주는

and tell them it is never too late.

홍보대사 같은 역할을 하고 싶습니다.

It's a dream.

그게 저의 꿈입니다.
