What's happening to the climate?

It is unbelievably bad.

This is, obviously, that famous view now of the Arctic,

So we all look at what we can do.

And when you look at the worldwide sources of CO2,

52 percent are tied to buildings.

Only nine percent is passenger cars, interestingly enough.

So we ran off to a sushi bar.

And at that sushi bar we came up with a great idea.

And it was something called EcoRock.

"에코락(EcoRock)"이라고 불리는 물건이었습니다.

And we said we could redesign the 115-year-old

gypsum drywall process that generates

115년 전통의 석고 기반 건식벽 제작 과정을

20 billion pounds of CO2 a year.

바꿀 수 있다고 생각했지요.

So it was a big idea. We wanted to reduce that by 80 percent,

엄청난 아이디어였죠. 이산화탄소 배출량을 80%나 줄일 생각이었으니까요.

which is exactly what we've done.

그리고 드디어 실제로 만들어 냈습니다.

We started R&D in 2006.

2006년에 처음 연구를 시작했어요.

Decided to use recycled content from cement

그리고 시멘트와 철강 제조과정에서 나오는

and steel manufacturing.

재활용 자재를 사용하기로 결정했죠.

There is the inside of our lab. We haven't shown this before.

여기가 연구소 내부입니다. 처음으로 보여드리는 거에요.

But our people had to do some 5,000

원하는 성능을 얻기 위해서 약 5000가지나 되는

different mixes to get this right, to hit our targets.

조합으로 자재를 만들고 시험해 봤습니다.

And they worked absolutely very, very, very hard.

다들 정말로 너무 열심히 일했어요.

So then we went forward and built our production line in China.

그리고는 중국에 실제 생산 공장을 열었습니다.

We don't build this production equipment any longer in the U.S., unfortunately.

안타깝게도 미국에는 이 생산 시설을 더 이상 지을 수가 없다고 하더라고요.

We did the line install over the summer.

여름 동안 생산설비를 갖추었지요.

We started right there, with absolutely nothing.

허허벌판에서 완전 새롭게 지었던 겁니다.

You're seeing for the first time, a brand new drywall production line,

이 새로운 건식벽 생산설비는 여러분께 처음 보여드리는 겁니다.

not made using gypsum at all.

석고를 전혀 사용하지 않죠.

That's the finished production line there.

여기에서 최종 자재가 나오게 됩니다.

We got our first panel out on December third.

이번 12월 3일에 첫 판넬이 생산될 예정입니다.

That is the slurry being poured onto paper, basically. That's the line running.

슬러리를 종이 위에 붓는 모습입니다. 이렇게 생산하고 있어요.

The exciting thing is, look at the faces of the people.

흥미로운 점은, 여기 사람 얼굴들을 보세요.

These are people who worked this project for two to three years.

2~3년간 이 프로젝트를 위해서 함께 일했던 사람들입니다.

And they are so excited. That's the first board off the line.

다 같이 기뻐했죠. 이게 처음으로 완성된 제품이었거든요.

Our Vice President of Operation kissing the board. Obviously very, very excited.

공정 담당 부사장이 판넬에 키스를 하네요. 정말 기분 좋은 순간이었습니다.

But this has a huge, huge impact on the environment.

이것은 우리 환경에 어마어마한 영향을 미칠 겁니다.

We signed the first panel just a few weeks after that, had a great signing ceremony,

몇 주 뒤에 첫 주문을 받게 됩니다. 계약 체결도 성대하게 했습니다.

leading to people hopefully using these products across the world.

이 계약이 저희 제품이 세계로 퍼져나가는 시발점이 되었으면 합니다.

And we've got Cradle-to-Cradle Gold on this thing.

"Cradle to Cradle Gold"라는 인증 마크도 획득했습니다.

We happened to win, just recently, the Green Product of the Year

최근에는 "올해의 환경 제품" 상도 받게 되었습니다.

for "The Re-Invention of Drywall," from Popular Science.

So here is what we learned: 8,000 gallons of gas

You probably had no idea. It's like driving around the world six times.

We must change everything.

Look around the room: chairs, wood,

everything around us has to change or we're not going to lick this problem.

주변의 모든 것을 바꾸지 않고서는 지금의 환경문제를 해결할 수가 없습니다.

Don't listen to the people who say you can't do this, because anyone can.

"아마 안 될거야"라는 사람들의 얘기는 듣지 마세요. 할 수 있습니다.

And these job losses, we can fix them with green-collar jobs.

최근에 높아진 실업률도 환경친화적 직업들이 새로 생김으로서 해결될 수 있습니다.

We've got four plants. We're building this stuff around the country.

최근에 공장을 4개 지었는데요. 앞으로 전 세계에 이런 공장을 지을 생각입니다.

We're going as fast as we can.

최대한 빠르게 확장을 하려고요.

Two and a half million cars worth of gypsum,

석고로 인한 이산화탄소 배출량은

you know, CO2 generated. Right?

자동차 250만대에 맞먹습니다.

So what will you do? I'll tell you what I did and why I did it. And I know my time's up.
