When I was a child growing up in Maine,

one of my favorite things to do

because my parents told me it would bring me luck.

But you know, these shells, they're hard to find.

They're covered in sand, they're difficult to see.

However, over time, I got used to looking for them.

하지만 시간이 지나며 저는 성게 껍질의

I started seeing shapes

모양과 패턴에 익숙해 졌고

그건 성게껍질을 찾는데 도움이 됐었죠.

and patterns that helped me to collect them.

이런 경험을 통해 저는 무엇을 찾는 것에 대한 열정을 갖게됐죠.

This grew into a passion for finding things,

과거와 고고학에 대한 사랑 말이죠.

a love for the past and archaeology.

And eventually, when I started studying Egyptology,

후에 제가 이집트학을 공부하기 시작했을 때,

저는 맨눈으로 사물을 관찰하는 것만으로는 충분하지 않다는 것을 깨달았지요.

I realized that seeing with my naked eyes alone wasn't enough.

Because all of the sudden, in Egypt,

my beach had grown from a tiny beach in Maine

to one eight hundred miles long,

next to the Nile.

And my sand dollars had grown to the size of cities.

This is really what brought me to using satellite imagery.

For trying to map the past, I knew that I had to see differently.

과거의 지도를 만들려면 새로운 방법으로 제 연구 지역을 조사해야 한다는 것을 깨달았죠.

그러기 위해 우리가 사용할 수 있는 연구 방법의 일례를 보여드리죠.

So I want to show you an example of how we see differently

using the infrared.

적외선을 사용하는거죠.

This is a site located in the eastern Egyptian delta

called Mendes.

벤딕스라는 곳입니다.

And the site visibly appears brown,

이곳은 육안으로 보면 분명히 갈색으로 보이지만

but when we use the infrared

적외선 사진을 영상처리해서 위색으로 나타내면

and we process it, all of the sudden,

using false color,

the site appears as bright pink.

밝은 분홍색으로 나타나죠.

What you are seeing

그 이유는 고대에 사용했던

are the actual chemical changes to the landscape

caused by the building materials and activities

What I want to share with you today

is how we've used satellite data

to find an ancient Egyptian city,

이치타위(Itjtawy)라는 고대 이집트 도시를

called Itjtawy,

찾았는지 보여드리겠습니다.

missing for thousands of years.

Itjtawy was ancient Egypt's capital

이치타위는 약 4천년전에 있었던

for over four hundred years,

at a period of time called the Middle Kingdom,

중기 왕조(Middle Kingdom) 시기에서

about four thousand years ago.

400년 이상 동안 고대 이집트의 수도였죠..

The site is located in the Faiyum of Egypt,

이 곳은 이집트의 페이염에 자리하고 있는데

and the site is really important,

이곳은 중기 왕조시대에 예술과 건축, 종교의

because in the Middle Kingdom there was this great renaissance

문예부흥이 일어났기 때문에 매우 중요한 장소이죠.

for ancient Egyptian art, architecture and religion.

이집트학 학자들은 이치타위가 그 도시를 건설한

Egyptologists have always known the site of Itjtawy

was located somewhere near the pyramids of the two kings who built it,

두명의 왕이 묻힌 여기에 붉은 원으로 표시된 두개의 피라미드

근처에 있다는 것을 항상 알고 있었죠.

indicated within the red circles here,

but somewhere within this massive flood plain.

그런데 문제는 이곳이 나일강이 범람되던

This area is huge --

it's four miles by three miles in size.

이 지역은 가로로 약 4.8킬로미터 세로로 약 6.4킬로미터 정도의 넓은 지역이죠.

이치타위는 나일강 바로 옆에 위치했었는데

The Nile used to flow right next to the city of Itjtawy,

and as it shifted and changed and moved over time to the east,

시간이 지나며 강의 진로가 자주 바뀌며 점점 동쪽으로

it covered over the city.

이동해서 그 도시 전체를 덮어버렸습니다.

So, how do you find a buried city

그렇다면 이렇게 넓은 지역에 묻힌 도시를 어떻게 찾을 수 있을까요?

in a vast landscape?

Finding it randomly would be the equivalent

무작위적으로 시도해서 그 위치를 찾아내는 것은

건초더미에서 바늘을 찾는 것과도 같죠.

of locating a needle in a haystack,

blindfolded, wearing baseball mitts.

눈을 감은채 야구공을 받으려는 것과 비슷하죠.

(Laughter)

그래서 우리가 택한 방법은 NASA의 지형 자료를 이용하면

So what we did is we used NASA topography data

to map out the landscape, very subtle changes.

전 지역의 아주 미세한 변화까지 매우 정확하게 포착할 수 있죠.

We started to be able to see where the Nile used to flow.

이렇게 해서 우리는 나일강이 흐르던 곳을 알아낼 수 있었죠.

사실 우리가 좀 더 자세히 살펴보면 더욱 흥미로운 것을 ..

But you can see in more detail, and even more interesting,

여기에 원으로 표시된 곳은 약간 융기된 지역인데

this very slight raised area

우리는 그 곳이 아마 이치타위가 있었던 곳일지 모른다고 생각했죠.

which we thought could possibly be the location of the city of Itjtawy.

So we collaborated with Egyptian scientists

그래서 우리는 이집트 과학자들과 함께

코어링 작업을 함께 진행했습니다. 여기 보실 수 있죠...

to do coring work, which you see here.

When I say coring, it's like ice coring,

코어링은 빙하에서 기후의 변화를 측정하기 위해 얼음 샘플을

but instead of layers of climate change,

채취하는 것 처럼 인간이 거주했었다는 증거를 찾기 위해 지층을 드릴하는 거죠.

you're looking for layers of human occupation.

우리는 지표면의 5미터 가량의

And, five meters down,

underneath a thick layer of mud,

두꺼운 진흙층 아래에서,

도자기류가 많이 나오는 지층을 발견했죠.

we found a dense layer of pottery.

이것이 보여주는 점은 이치타위의 추정지인

What this shows is that at this possible location of Itjtawy,

이 곳 5미터 아래에서

five meters down,

we have a layer of occupation for several hundred years,

우리는 중기 왕조시대까지 수백년에 걸쳐

dating to the Middle Kingdom,

우리가 이치타위라고 생각하는 지역에 살았던 당시 사람들의 직업층을 알게 됩니다.

dating to the exact period of time we think Itjtawy is.

작업중이던 원석 종류도 발견했는데요 --

We also found work stone --

carnelian, quartz and agate

홍옥이나 수정 그리고 마노석 같은 보석류들인데

that shows that there was a jeweler's workshop here.

이곳에 보석가공 작업장이 있었음을 알려줍니다.

These might not look like much,

별게 아닌것처럼 보일지 모르지만,

그 시대에 보석으로 가장 흔히 사용했던 보석류들이

but when you think about the most common stones

used in jewelry from the Middle Kingdom,

바로 이런 종류였음을 알려줍니다.

these are the stones that were used.

이 지역에서 중기 왕조까지 있던 직업의 종류를 잘 보여주죠

So, we have a dense layer of occupation

.

dating to the Middle Kingdom at this site.

이 곳에는 매우 중요한 보석 작업장이 있던 증거도 있는데,

We also have evidence of an elite jeweler's workshop,

이는 어떤 측면에서 이 도시가 매우 중요한 지역이었음을 말해줍니다.

showing that whatever was there was a very important city.

No Itjtawy was here yet,

아니죠... 이치타위는 아직 아닐지 모르지만,

but we're going to be returning to the site

우리는 돌아가서

in the near future to map it out.

이 지역의 지형도를 완성하려고 합니다.

And even more importantly,

더 중요한 것은,

we have funding to train young Egyptians in the use of satellite technology

우리에겐 위성기술을 사용할 수 있도록 젊은 이집트 학생들을 훈련시킬만한 예산도 가지고 있답니다.

그래서 그 젊은이들도 함께 이 위대한 발견에 동참할 수 있습니다.

so they can be the ones making great discoveries as well.

So I wanted to end with my favorite quote from the Middle Kingdom --

저는 제가 좋아하는 이 구절로 강의를 마치려고 합니다

중기 왕조시대의 구절인데요 --

it was probably written at the city of Itjtawy

아마 4천년전 쯤 이치타위라는 도시 어디에선가 씌여진 것이겠죠.

four thousand years ago.

"Sharing knowledge is the greatest of all callings.

세상에 이에 비할 일은 존재하지 않는다."

There's nothing like it in the land."

So as it turns out, TED was not founded in 1984 AD.

It certainly puts finding seashells by the seashore in perspective.
