I used to be a Malthusian.

This was my mental model of the world:

So what then?

Most of the economic models are built around scarcity and growth.

So a lot of economists

look at declining population

and expect to see stagnation, maybe depression.

But a declining population is going to have

at least two very beneficial economic effects.

One: fewer people on a fixed amount of land

In the cities, a lot of the cost of property

Take away land speculation,

price of land drops.

And that begins to lift a heavy burden

off the world's poor.

Number two: a declining population

means scarce labor.

Scarce labor drives wages.

As wages increase

that also lifts the burden on the poor and the working class.

가난한 이들과 노동자 계급의 짐을 덜어주게 됩니다.

Now I'm not talking about a radical drop in population like we saw in the Black Death.

14세기 유럽의 흑사병처럼 인구가 갑자기 확 줄어드는 것을 말씀드리는 것은 아닙니다.

But look what happened in Europe

하지만 페스트가 휩쓸고 지나간 뒤의

after the plague:

당시 유럽 상황을 보면

rising wages,

임금이 상승했고,

land reform,

토지 개혁이 있었고,

technological innovation,

기술의 혁신이 있었으며

birth of the middle class;

중산층이 탄생했음을 볼 수 있습니다.

and after that, forward-looking social movements

그리고 나서 진보적인 사회 운동들이 나타나게 되죠.

like the Renaissance,

르네상스나,

and later the Enlightenment.

그 뒤에 계몽주의 같은 것들이 꽃피게 됩니다.

Most of our cultural heritage has tended to look backward,

우리 문화 유산의 대부분은 과거를 회상하고,

romanticizing the past.

과거를 미화하는 작품입니다.

All of the Western religions begin with the notion of Eden,

서양의 모든 종교관은 "에덴"이라는 개념에서 시작합니다.

and descend through a kind of profligate present

to a very ugly future.

So human history is viewed

as sort of this downhill slide

But I think we're in for another change,

At that point, we'll start romanticizing the future again,

So why does this matter?

Why talk about social-economic movements

어차피 한 세기보다 더 먼 미래의

that may be more than a century away?

사회경제적 변화인데 말이죠.

Because transitions are dangerous times.

그 이유는 역사적 전환기가 보통 위험한 시기이기 때문이에요.

When land owners start to lose money,

땅주인들이 돈을 잃기 시작하고,

and labor demands more pay,

노동자들이 임금 인상을 요구하면,

there are some powerful interests that are going to fear for the future.

미래에 대한 두려움을 조장하는 강력한 이해관계가 형성될거에요.

Fear for the future leads to some rash decisions.

미래에 대한 두려움은 종종 무모한 결정으로 이어지죠.

If we have a positive view about the future

미래에 대한 긍정적인 시각을 가질 수 있다면,

then we may be able to accelerate through that turn,

절벽으로 뛰어내리기 보다는 그 변화를 자연스럽게

instead of careening off a cliff.

If we can make it through the next 150 years,

I think that your great great grandchildren

will forget all about Malthus.

And instead, they'll be planning for the future

and starting to build the 22nd Century Enlightenment.
