I like to pay attention to these

제가 이런 거에 신경을 쓰는게,

because that's how we originally funded the company,

저희 회사가 처음에 이런 식으로 투자를 받았거든요,

and it's gone pretty well.

근데 꽤 잘 됐잖아요.

Though in all seriousness,

어쨌든 진지하게 돌아가서,

this position that you just saw me in,

지금 제가 하고 있던 자세

looking down at my phone,

전화기를 내려다 보고 있던 이 자세가

that's one of the reasons behind this project, Project Glass.

이 프로젝트 글래스를 시작하게 된 이유 중의 하나였어요.

Because we ultimately questioned

궁극적으로 이게 우리가 만들 수 있는

whether this is the ultimate future

최선의 미래인가

of how you want to connect to other people in your life,

다른 사람들과 소통하고

how you want to connect to information.

정보에 연결할 수 있는 방법인가를 의심하기 시작한거죠.

Should it be by just walking around looking down?

꼭 이렇게 내려다 보면서 걸어다녀야 하는 걸까?

But that was the vision behind Glass,

그런 비전을 배경으로

and that's why we've created this form factor.

이런 형태를 만들어내게 된 거에요

Okay. And I don't want to go through all the things it does and whatnot,

뭐 이것저것 기능 같은 걸 다 나열하고 싶지는 않은데요

but I want to tell you a little bit more

그래도 글래스를 만들게 된 동기에 대해서는

about the motivation behind what led to it.

조금 더 알려드리고 싶었습니다.

In addition to potentially socially isolating yourself

잠재적으로 사회적으로 스스로를 고립시키는 것 이외에도

when you're out and about looking at your phone,

밖에서 돌아다니면서 전화기를 쳐다 볼 때,

it's kind of, is this what you're meant to do with your body?

"이렇게 해야만 하나?" 하는 생각들지 않으세요?

You're standing around there

멀뚱히 서서

and you're just rubbing

그냥 특색 없는 유리 조각을

this featureless piece of glass.

문지르고 있는 것 뿐이잖아요.

You're just kind of moving around.

그냥 돌아다니는 것 뿐이죠.

So when we developed Glass, we thought really about,

그래서 글래스를 개발하면서 그런 걸 많이 고민했어요

can we make something that frees your hands?

손을 자유롭게 사용하도록 만들 수 있을까?

You saw all of the things people are doing

아까 영상 속의 사람들이

in the video back there.

하고 있던 거 다 보셨죠.

They were all wearing Glass,

모두 구글 글래스를 쓰고

and that's how we got that footage.

찍은 영상입니다.

And also you want something that frees your eyes.

시야도 가리지 않아야 했구요.

That's why we put the display up high,

그래서 디스플레이를 높게

out of your line of sight,

시야에서 벗어나도록 장착했습니다.

so it wouldn't be where you're looking

그래야 앞을 볼 때 가리지 않고

and it wouldn't be where you're making

사람들과 눈을 마주 칠 때

eye contact with people.

방해가 되지 않잖아요.

And also we wanted to free up the ears,

또 다른 소리를 듣는 데에도 방해가 되지 말아야 하죠.

so the sound actually goes through,

그래서 소리가 그대로 통과 되도록,

conducts straight to the bones in your cranium,

골전도 방식을 통해 전달되게 한 거죠.

which is a little bit freaky at first, but you get used to it.

처음에는 좀 이상한데, 익숙해지면 또 괜찮습니다.

And ironically, if you want to hear it better,

그래서 아이러니하게도

you actually just cover your ear,

한쪽 귀를 이렇게 가리면 더 잘 들립니다.

which is kind of surprising, but that's how it works.

좀 어이 없지만 그게 그렇답니다.

My vision when we started Google 15 years ago

저희가 15년 전에 구글을 처음 시작했을때 저의 비전은

was that eventually you wouldn't

언젠가는 검색어 자체가

have to have a search query at all.

없어지는 날이 올거라는 것이었습니다.

You'd just have information come to you as you needed it.

원하는대로 정보를 받을 수 있게 될 거라는 생각이었죠.

And this is now, 15 years later,

그리고 15년이 지난 지금,

sort of the first form factor

이런 첫 번째 형태로

that I think can deliver that vision

그 비전을 실현하게 된 것 같습니다.

when you're out and about on the street

밖에서 걸어다닐 때나

talking to people and so forth.

다른 사람들과 이야기 할 때 적합하게 말이죠.

This project has lasted now, been just over two years.

이 프로젝트를 시작한 지 이제 2년 조금 지났는데요,

We've learned an amazing amount.

참 많은 걸 알게 되었습니다.

It's been really important to make it comfortable.

이걸 썼을 때의 착용감이 굉장히 중요했습니다.

So our first prototypes we built were huge.

저희가 처음 만든 시제품은 정말 컸어요.

It was like cell phones strapped to your head.

핸드폰을 머리에 묶어 놓은 것 같았죠.

It was very heavy, pretty uncomfortable.

굉장히 무겁고, 꽤 불편하고.

We had to keep it secret from our industrial designer

저희 산업 디자이너가 이 프로젝트를 수락한다고 할 때까지

until she actually accepted the job,

그 작업은 비밀로 했는데

and then she almost ran away screaming.

보자마자 쓰러지더라구요.

But we've come a long way.

하지만 우리는 많은 진전을 이뤘습니다.

And the other really unexpected surprise was the camera.

예상하지 못했던 놀라운 것들 중 하나는 카메라였는데요,

Our original prototypes didn't have cameras at all,

초기 시제품은 카메라가 아예 없었는데

but it's been really magical to be able to capture moments

우리 가족과, 아이들과 함꼐 지낸 순간들을

spent with my family, my kids.

기록할 수 있는 게 참 좋더라구요.

I just never would have dug out a camera

가방에서 그 순간을 잡기 위해

or a phone or something else to take that moment.

카메라나 핸드폰 같은 걸 따로 꺼내지 않아도 되는 거에요.

And lastly I've realized, in experimenting with this device,

마지막으로, 이 장치를 가지고 실험하면서 느낀건데

that I also kind of have a nervous tic.

제가 습관적인 버릇이 있더라구요.

The cell phone is -- yeah, you have to look down on it and all that,

핸드폰은, 뭐, 이렇게 보던가 하기는 하는데,

but it's also kind of a nervous habit.

그냥 불안할 때 나오는 버릇같은 거더라구요.

Like if I smoked, I'd probably just smoke instead.

제가 담배를 폈다면 아마 그냥 담배를 폈겠죠.

I would just light up a cigarette. It would look cooler.

그냥 한 대 피는거죠, 그게 더 멋있기는 했을텐데.

You know, I'd be like --

이렇게...

But in this case, you know, I whip this out

그렇지만 지금은, 뭐, 그냥 이렇게 꺼내서

and I sit there and look as if I have something

앉아서 뭐 중요한 걸 하고 있거나

very important to do or attend to.

할 일이 있는 척 하고 있는 거죠.

But it really opened my eyes to how much of my life

그러면서 정말 깨닫게 된 겁니다,

I spent just secluding away,

얼마나 스스로를 고립시키고 있는지,

be it email or social posts or whatnot,

그게 이메일이든 소셜 포스팅이든 뭐든,

even though it wasn't really --

그게 정말로는

there's nothing really that important or that pressing.

뭐 그렇게 중요하지도 급하지도 않은 것들인데 말이죠.

And with this, I know I will get certain messages

근데 이걸 가지고는

if I really need them,

정말 필요한 게 있으면 메세지를 받을 수 있고

but I don't have to be checking them all the time.

끊임없이 쳐다보지 않아도 된다는 겁니다.

Yeah, I've really enjoyed actually exploring the world more,

이제는 제 주위의 세상을 더 열심히 즐기게 되었고

doing more of the crazy things like you saw in the video.
