This is my first trip,

今回 私は初めて旅をしました

first time in life I'm outside of the walls of Gaza.

生まれて初めて ガザの塀の外に出たのです

I'm so happy to be here.

My ambition always was to be a pilot, to fly a plane,

私はずっと パイロットになり 飛行機を操縦したいと夢見ていました

to feel free to fly the sky, to touch the sky.

自由に空を飛び 空に触れて―

But that didn't happen.

しかし そうはいきませんでした

Simply, I live in Gaza, there is no airport.

私はガザに住んでいて そこには空港などありません

All borders are closed on every side.

全ての国境が あらゆる方向で封鎖されています

We live in one of the biggest prisons in the world.

世界一大きな刑務所に 住んでいるという訳です

The only thing I can do is just to look up to the sky.

私に出来るのは 空を見上げる事だけです

On some days, we are lucky if we have electricity

一日に ４、５時間でも 電気が通れば

for four or five hours.

ラッキーです

When it's cold, we make a fire on the front or on the roof of our homes.

寒い時は 家の前や屋根の上で たき火をします

Sometimes we make food, too.

時折そこで 煮炊きもします

My job in Gaza is to arrange everything for journalists who come to my homeland

ガザでの私の仕事は そんな故郷にやって来るジャーナリストに

to tell the stories about what's going on in Gaza.

ガザで何が起こっているかという 取材のアレンジをすることです

Many mornings, I had to go to the border area

朝になると 国境地帯に行き

to collect a journalist.

記者をお迎えします

If anything should happen to the journalist,

もし記者に何か起きたり

or if the journalist decides to cover a story

政府の意に沿わない記事を

the government doesn't want us to cover,

記者が書こうとすると

bad things could happen.

酷い事になる可能性もあります

Navigating through my country helping journalists,

ジャーナリストや映画製作者 報道チームを

filmmakers, news crews, is my working life.

必要なところに連れていくのが 私の仕事です

I believe my success comes from building a relationship

仕事をうまく行うためには ジャーナリストや報道陣とだけでなく

not only with journalists and the news crews,

ガザ地区のコミュニティとの 関係を構築する事が

but also with the communities in the Gaza Strip.

必要だと考えています

These communities who don't want their stories to be told,

これらのコミュニティは 報道されたくないと思っています

I never looked to them as stories or numbers.

そんな人たちを「記事」や「数」として 捉えたことはありません

But like me, they are human beings.

私と同じように 彼らだって人間なのです

I have built up many relationships over 10 years.

10年以上に渡って 私は多くの関係を築いて来ました

And guess what?

その結果

This gives me the chance to get access to people,

私は人々に接し 他の人達が入手出来ない話に

to stories that others can't.

触れる機会が持てるのです

In some certain situations, I feel, as a woman, I have more power.

女性として自分が より大きな力を 持っていると感じる時があります

Many male journalists in my society,

この社会の多くの男性ジャーナリストは

they want to cover a story about drug addiction in my country.

我が国の薬物中毒についての話を 報道したがります

That problem started when the Gaza tunnel was being built.

この問題はガザのトンネルが 掘られている時に始まりました

With the siege on Gaza,

ガザが封鎖されたとき

tunnels brought people all the basic needs

トンネルは人々に 食べ物といった全ての必需品

like food, building material, other stuff we needed.

建築資材や必要とする 他の物資をもたらしました

But not anymore, because the Egyptian side flooded them up with water

しかしエジプト側で トンネルに水を注入して封鎖したために

and they are not working anymore.

トンネルは機能しなくなっていますが

Drugs were being smuggled,

当時 薬物が密輸されており

and many young people got addicted, too.

多くの若者たちも その中毒となりました

In the tradition of the Palestinian society,

it's forbidden for men to enter the household.

男性が他の家に入る事は 禁じられています

So, no male journalists get the story.

従って男性ジャーナリストは誰も 話を聞けないのです

But I did.

でも私にはそれが出来ました

I have a wonderful husband,

私には素晴らしい夫がおり

a wonderful husband who supports me

社会から受ける あらゆる批判にも拘らず

despite all the criticism he gets from the society.

私を支えてくれています

He's at home now with my two kids,

彼は今２人の子ども達と家にいます

and I have another one that's growing in here.

ここで育っているもう１人を 私が抱えています

When I'm working, I call him every two hours,

仕事をしている時 夫に２時間おきに電話をします

and he knows if he doesn't hear from me,

夫は私からの 連絡がないと分かると

he should call my contact,

私の連絡員に

the one who gives me access to the story,

電話をしなければなりません 連絡員とは私に取材許可をくれる人で

which is the one who I trust.

私が信頼している人です

One of the times in Gaza,

ガザで こんな事がありました

during the kidnapping of the British journalist Alan Johnston,

アラン・ジョンストンという イギリス人ジャーナリストが誘拐された時

I was asked by an American magazine

私はアメリカの雑誌から ガザの誘拐犯達と

to set up a meeting with the kidnappers in Gaza, and I did.

面会できないかと依頼され 実現しました

The journalist covering the story and I

その事件を追っている ジャーナリストと私は

were asked to meet outside of his hotel.

ホテルの外で 待つように指示されました

They came, they picked us up in a black van with black windows,

彼らはやって来て 窓を黒く目隠しした 黒い車に 私達を乗せました

they were wearing masks on that day.

その日彼らはマスクをしていました

And they drove us away, far away in the middle of a field.

そして私達は 郊外の荒野の真ん中に 連れ出されました

They took our cell phones

私達は携帯を取り上げられ

and we did the interview with the kidnapper outside in that field.

その荒野で 誘拐犯達に インタビューをしました

I was so scared that day,

あんなに恐ろしかった日の事は

a day I will never forget.

決して忘れられません

So, why do I do what I do?

何故 私はこんなことを しているのでしょうか？

I do it because I believe if I didn't,

もし私がやらなければ ガザについての物語の

a huge part of the story about Gaza will be missing.

大きな部分が損なわれていくだろうと 信じているからです

There are some more stories I could tell you about my country.

私の国に関してお伝えしたい話が もっとあります

And not all of them are bad.

その全てが 悲惨なものとは限りません

I love my country, despite the terrible situation we live in --

私は祖国を愛しています　 悲惨な状況の下で暮らしているにも拘わらず

siege, poverty, unemployment --

封鎖、貧困、失業等の―

but there is life.

しかしそこには「息づく生活」があります

There are people who are dreamers and amazing people full of energy.

夢を見る人達やエネルギーに満ち溢れた 素晴らしい人達がいます

We have wonderful music, and a great music school.

素敵な音楽や 優れた音楽学校があります

We have parkour dancers who dance in the rubble of their homes.

崩れてしまった彼らの家の瓦礫の中で踊る パルクールダンサーがいます

And Gaza is the only place in the Arab world

そしてガザは イスラム教徒とキリスト教徒が

where Muslims and Christians live in strong brotherhood.

強い同胞愛の下 共に暮らす アラブ世界で唯一の場所なのです

During the time of war,

戦闘期間中

the hardest part for me is leaving the house early in the morning,

私にとって一番辛いのは 子供達を置いて

leaving my children.

朝早く家を出る事です

I take a picture of them everyday

私は毎日子ども達の 写真を撮っています

because I never know if I will make it back to them.

彼らのもとに帰れるかどうか 全く分からないからです

Being a fixer and a journalist is difficult and dangerous in Gaza.

フィクサーであり ジャーナリスト である事はガザでは困難で危険です

But when I hear the sound of the shelling or the sound of the bombing,

しかし砲撃や爆弾の音を聞くと

I just head straight toward it,

私はただそれに真っすぐに 向かって行きます

because I want to be there first,

一番乗りになりたいからです

because these stories should be told.

その話は語られるべきものだからです

When my children were small and we heard the sound of the war,

子どもたちが幼い頃 戦闘の音が聞こえてくると

I used to tell them that they were fireworks.

私は「あれは花火だよ」と 言ったものです

Now they are older, they understand.

現在子どもたちは成長し 理解が出来るようになっています

I do have terrible nightmares

私は本当に おぞましい悪夢を見ます

because of all that I witnessed during war times,

戦闘中に目撃した全てのせいで―

especially these lifeless bodies of young children.

特に幼い子ども達の 死体の夢です

I still remember a little girl, her name is Hala.

ハラという幼い少女の事を 未だに覚えています

She's the only survivor from her family.

彼女はその家族での 唯一の生存者です

Her picture will be with me forever.

彼女の写真を 私はずっと身に着けるつもりです

I will never forget her.

彼女の事は 決して忘れないでしょう

I'm proud that I can stand here and be here today with you.

私はここに立ち 今日皆さんと 共に居られることを 誇りに思っています

I'm proud that I can tell you stories, sad and happy,

皆さんに悲しく そして幸せな物語を 世界の小さな片隅 ガザからの物語を

stories about my small corner of the world, Gaza.

お伝え出来る事を誇りに思っています

I'm proud that I am the first female fixer working in Gaza.

自分が ガザで最初の女性フィクサー として働いている事を誇りに思っています

And the funny thing is they call me Mr. Rambo in Gaza.

おかしな事に私は「ガザのランボー」 と呼ばれているんですよ

(Laughter)

I hope one day, I will get the chance to tell the stories of all other women,

いつか全ての女性達 我が国で私が知る 素晴らしい女性の物語を

all other amazing women I know in my country.

伝えられる機会が 得られる事を願っています

I hope that one day I can help other women in my country

いつか 我が国の他の女性が 私のようなフィクサーになる

to be fixers like me.

手助けが出来ればと思っています

And of course sometimes, I feel I can't do this work anymore,

しかし勿論 時として もうこの仕事は 出来ないと感じる事もあります

it's just too much for me.

私には もう耐えられないのです

But I remember these words:

でも こんな言葉を思い出すのです

"Don't limit your challenge, but challenge your limit.

「挑戦に限度を設けず 自分の限界に挑戦せよ

Don't allow others to stand in front of your dreams."

あなたの夢の前に 他人を立ちはだからせてはならない」
