You might think there are many things that I can't do

because I cannot see.

That's largely true.

Actually, I just needed to have a bit of help

But there is also a lot that I can do.

This is me rock climbing for the first time.

Actually, I love sports and I can play many sports,

like swimming, skiing, skating, scuba diving, running and so on.

水泳、スキー、スケート、 スキューバダイビング、ジョギングなどなど

But there is one limitation:

でも１つ制限があります

somebody needs to help me.

誰かの手助けが 必要なことです

I want to be independent.

私は１人で できるように なりたいです

I lost my sight at the age of 14 in a swimming pool accident.

私は14歳の時 プールでの事故で 視力を失いました

I was an active, independent teenager,

行動的で自立した子供でしたが

and suddenly I became blind.

突然 盲目になったんです

The hardest thing for me was losing my independence.

私にとって 一番 つらかったのは 自立性を失ったことです

Things that until then seemed simple became almost impossible to do alone.

それまで簡単だったことが 自力では ほとんど不可能になりました

For example, one of my challenges was textbooks.

困難だったことの１つに 教科書があります

Back then, there were no personal computers,

当時は パソコンも インターネットも

no Internet, no smartphones.

スマートフォンもありません

So I had to ask one of my two brothers to read me textbooks,

それで２人いる兄弟のどちらかに 教科書を読み上げてもらい

and I had to create my own books in Braille.

点字で自分用の本を 作る必要がありました

Can you imagine?

想像できますか？

Of course, my brothers were not happy about it,

私の兄弟にしても そんなの 面白いわけもなく

and later, I noticed they were not there whenever I needed them.

I think they tried to stay away from me.

私のことを避けていたんだと 思いますが

I don't blame them.

I really wanted to be freed from relying on someone.

ただ私は 誰かに頼らずに済むように なりたいと強く思っていて

That became my strong desire to ignite innovation.

それがイノベーションを起こしたい という想いに繋がりました

Jump ahead to the mid-1980s.

時が過ぎ 1980年代の中頃

I got to know cutting-edge technologies

最新技術に触れる ようになった私は

and I thought to myself,

疑問を持ちました

how come there is no computer technology

なんで点字の本を

コンピューターで作る技術が ないんだろう？

to create books in Braille?

These amazing technologies must be able to also help people

この素晴らしい技術を使えば

私のようなハンデのある人間を 救うことだってできるはずだ

with limitations like myself.

That's the moment my innovation journey began.

そうして私のイノベーションへの旅が 始まりました

I started developing digital book technologies,

私はデジタルブック技術の開発に 取り組み始めました

such as a digital Braille editor, digital Braille dictionary

デジタル点字エディタ デジタル点字辞書

and a digital Braille library network.

Today, every student who is visually impaired can read textbooks,

パソコンやモバイル端末を使い

by using personal computers and mobile devices,

点字や音声を通して 教科書を読むことができます

in Braille or in voice.

This may not surprise you,

これは驚くことでは ないでしょう

since everyone now has digital books in their tablets in 2015.

2015年の今では みんなタブレットに 電子書籍を持っています

But Braille went digital many years before digital books,

でも点字の本は 普通の本よりずっと前に デジタルになっていたんです

already in the late 1980s, almost 30 years ago.

1980年代後半 今から30年近くも前の話です

Strong and specific needs of the blind people

視覚障害者の 具体的で強いニーズが

made this opportunity to create digital books way back then.

そんな昔に電子書籍が作られる機会を 生み出したのです

And this is actually not the first time this happened,

そういったことは 何もこれが初めてではありません

because history shows us accessibility ignites innovation.

アクセシビリティがイノベーションを刺激することを 歴史は示しています

The telephone was invented while developing a communication tool

電話機は 耳が不自由な人のための

コミュニケーションの手段を 作り出そうとする中で生まれました

for hearing impaired people.

Some keyboards were also invented to help people with disabilities.

ある種のキーボードもまた 元々は障害者のために作られたものでした

Now I'm going to give you another example from my own life.

私が関わったもう１つの例を ご紹介しましょう

In the '90s, people around me started talking about the Internet

90年代に 周りの人たちが インターネットやウェブのことを

and web browsing.

I remember the first time I went on the web.

I was astonished.

I could access newspapers at any time and every day.

I could even search for any information by myself.

I desperately wanted to help the blind people have access to the Internet,

and I found ways to render the web into synthesized voice,

which dramatically simplified the user interface.

This led me to develop the Home Page Reader in 1997,

first in Japanese and later, translated into 11 languages.

When I developed the Home Page Reader,

I got many comments from users.

One that I strongly remember said,

It was a revolutionary moment for the blind.

The cyber world became accessible,

and this technology that we created for the blind has many uses,

way beyond what I imagined.

It can help drivers listen to their emails

or it can help you listen to a recipe while cooking.

Today, I am more independent,

but it is still not enough.

まだ十分ではありません

For example, when I approached the stage just now, I needed assistance.

My goal is to come up here independently.

私の目標は１人でここに 来られるようになることです

And not just here.

ここだけじゃなく

My goal is to be able to travel and do things that are simple to you.

旅行をしたり 皆さんには何でもないことが できるようになることです

OK, now let me show you the latest technologies.

This is a smartphone app that we are working on.

So now the app navigates me

by analyzing beacon signals and smartphone sensors

and permits me to move around indoor and outdoor environments

all by myself.

But the computer vision part that showed who is approaching,

誰がどんな様子でやってくるのか教えてくれる という部分は まだ開発中です

in which mood -- we are still working on that part.

And recognizing facial expressions is very important for me to be social.

表情を認識する機能は 視覚障害者が社交的になるためにとても重要です

So now the fusions of technologies are ready to help me

様々な技術の融合によって

視覚障害者が 世界を見られるようになります

see the real world.

We call this cognitive assistance.

私たちはこれを 「認知アシスタンス」と呼んでいます

It understands our surrounding world

周りの世界を把握して

耳に囁いたり 指への振動で伝えてくれます

and whispers to me in voice or sends a vibration to my fingers.

Cognitive assistance will augment missing or weakened abilities --

欠けている ないしは 弱った五感能力を

「認知アシスタンス」は 補ってくれます

in other words, our five senses.

This technology is only in an early stage,

この技術は まだ初期段階ですが

but eventually, I'll be able to find a classroom on campus,

enjoy window shopping

or find a nice restaurant while walking along a street.

It will be amazing if I can find you on the street before you notice me.

It will become my best buddy, and yours.

これは私にとって そして皆さんにとって 最高の相棒になるでしょう

So, this really is a great challenge.

だから これは やり甲斐のある挑戦なんです

It is a challenge that needs collaboration,

そしてこの挑戦には 協力が必要です

which is why we are creating an open community

to accelerate research activities.

Just this morning, we announced the open-source fundamental technologies

and the next time that I'm on this stage,

through technology and innovation,

I will be able to walk up here
