You know, one of the intense pleasures of travel

is the opportunity to live amongst those

who have not forgotten the old ways,

who still feel their past in the wind,

touch it in stones polished by rain,

is to really remember the central revelation of anthropology,

and that is the idea that the world in which we live

But what's interesting is the unique cadence of the song,

Now, together the myriad cultures of the world

as indeed is the biological web of life that you know as a biosphere.

And you might think of this cultural web of life

जीवन के इस सांस्कृतिक जाल को

as being an ethnosphere,

शायद आप नृवंशी समझ बैठें

and you might define the ethnosphere

तथा आप विचारों व स्वपनों,

as being the sum total of all thoughts and dreams, myths,

कल्पनाओं, प्रेरणाओं, अंर्तज्ञान

ideas, inspirations, intuitions brought into being

और जो भी कुछ चेतना की प्रारंभिक अवस्था से

by the human imagination since the dawn of consciousness.

मानव कल्पना में मौजूद हो को एक साथ लेकर नृवंशी को परिभाषित करे

The ethnosphere is humanity's great legacy.

नृवंशी होना मानवता की सबसे बड़ी विरासत है ।

It's the symbol of all that we are

हम सब क्या हैं यह उसका चिन्ह है

and all that we can be as an astonishingly inquisitive species.

तथा हम कितनी जिज्ञासु प्रजाति के हो सकते हैं ।

And just as the biosphere has been severely eroded,

जैसे कि जीवनमंडल अत्यधिक नष्ट हो चुका है

so too is the ethnosphere

ठीक वैसे ही नृवंशीमंडल भी एक बहुत

-- and, if anything, at a far greater rate.

ही तेज गति से नष्ट हो चुका है ।

No biologists, for example, would dare suggest

कोई भी जीव-वैज्ञानिक यह कहने का दुस्साहस नहीं करेगा

that 50 percent of all species or more have been or are

on the brink of extinction because it simply is not true,

and yet that -- the most apocalyptic scenario

And the great indicator of that, of course, is language loss.

When each of you in this room were born,

there were 6,000 languages spoken on the planet.

Now, a language is not just a body of vocabulary

आजकल भाषा मात्र एक शब्द संग्रह नहीं है

or a set of grammatical rules.

या फिर वह व्याकरण नियमावली भी नहीं है ।

A language is a flash of the human spirit.

भाषा मानव आत्मा की चमक है ।

It's a vehicle through which the soul of each particular culture

भाषा एक माध्यम है जिसके द्वारा किसी विशिष्ट संस्कृति की आत्

comes into the material world.

एक अनात्मवादी संसार में प्रवेश करती है ।

Every language is an old-growth forest of the mind,

प्रत्येक भाषा दिमाग के भीतर

a watershed, a thought, an ecosystem of spiritual possibilities.

प्राचीन वन, जल-संभर, एक विचार, आध्यात्मिक संभावनाओं के परितंत्र की भांति होती है ।

And of those 6,000 languages, as we sit here today in Monterey,

fully half are no longer being whispered into the ears of children.

They're no longer being taught to babies,

And yet, that dreadful fate is indeed the plight of somebody

And you'll suddenly discover what it would be like

And so, what I'd like to do with you today

is sort of take you on a journey through the ethnosphere,

a brief journey through the ethnosphere,

to try to begin to give you a sense of what in fact is being lost.

Now, there are many of us who sort of forget

that when I say "different ways of being,"

Now, this is a people who cognitively

because the canopy of the heavens

is equated to the canopy of the forest

upon which the people depend.

They have a curious language and marriage rule

which is called "linguistic exogamy:"

you must marry someone who speaks a different language.

And this is all rooted in the mythological past,

yet the curious thing is in these long houses,

where there are six or seven languages spoken

They simply listen and then begin to speak.

Or, one of the most fascinating tribes I ever lived with,

the Waorani of northeastern Ecuador,

an astonishing people first contacted peacefully in 1958.

In 1957, five missionaries attempted contact

and made a critical mistake.

They dropped from the air

8 x 10 glossy photographs of themselves

in what we would say to be friendly gestures,

forgetting that these people of the rainforest

had never seen anything two-dimensional in their lives.

of Vodoun. And Voodoo is not a black magic cult.

On the contrary, it's a complex metaphysical worldview.

It's interesting.

If I asked you to name the great religions of the world,

what would you say?

Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, whatever.

There's always one continent left out,

the assumption being that sub-Saharan Africa

had no religious beliefs. Well, of course, they did

But, what makes Voodoo so interesting

is that it's this living relationship

between the living and the dead.

So, the living give birth to the spirits.

The spirits can be invoked from beneath the Great Water,

responding to the rhythm of the dance

That's why the Voodooists like to say

We dance in the temple and become God."

हम मंदिर में नाचते हैं और भगवान बन जाते हैं ।

And because you are possessed, you are taken by the spirit --

चूंकि आप आत्‍माग्रस्‍त होते हैं

how can you be harmed?

इसलिए आपको हानि कैसे पहुंच सकती है?

So you see these astonishing demonstrations:

Voodoo acolytes in a state of trance

जादू-टोने के अनुचर को समाधि लेते हुए,

handling burning embers with impunity,

a rather astonishing demonstration of the ability of the mind

to affect the body that bears it

when catalyzed in the state of extreme excitation.

Now, of all the peoples that I've ever been with,

Descendants of the ancient Tairona civilization

in the wake of the conquest,

And at the end of this amazing initiation,

one day they're suddenly taken out

अचानक एक दिन उन्हें बाहर निकाला जाता है

and for the first time in their lives, at the age of 18,

और 18 वर्ष की आयु के पश्चात वे अपने जीवन को पहली बार सूर्योदय के दर्शन करते हैं

they see a sunrise. And in that crystal moment of awareness

और इस जागरूकता के स्वच्छ क्षणों में

of first light as the Sun begins to bathe the slopes

सूर्य की पहली किरण हैरान करने वाले खूबसूरत प्राकृतिक नजारों में

of the stunningly beautiful landscape,

suddenly everything they have learned in the abstract

is affirmed in stunning glory. And the priest steps back

and says, "You see? It's really as I've told you.

It is that beautiful. It is yours to protect."

वह सुंदर है । यह आपका है और आप ही को इसे बचाना है ।"

They call themselves the "elder brothers"

वे स्वयं को ज्येष्ठ भ्राता कहते हैं

and they say we, who are the younger brothers,

और वे हमें कनिष्ठ भ्राता कहते हैं

are the ones responsible for destroying the world.

और वे इस संसार को नष्ट करने के लिए हमें जिम्मेदार ठहराते हैं ।

Now, this level of intuition becomes very important.

अब तक इस श्रेणी की दीक्षा बहुत आवश्यक होती है ।

Whenever we think of indigenous people and landscape,

जब कभी भी हम स्थान विशेष के लोगों तथा प्रकृति के बारे में सोचते हैं तो

we either invoke Rousseau

हम रोसेऊ का आह्वान करते हैं

and the old canard of the "noble savage,"

तथा उसके साथ पुरानी निराधार क्रूरता को याद करते हैं

which is an idea racist in its simplicity,

जो कि स्वयं ही एक जातिभेद पूर्ण विचार है,

or alternatively, we invoke Thoreau

या फिर हम थोरेयू का आह्वान करते हैं

and say these people are closer to the Earth than we are.

और कहते हैं कि हमारी तुलना में ये लोग पृथ्वी के अधिक नजदीक हैं ।

Well, indigenous people are neither sentimental

हां, स्थानीय लोग न तो भावुक होते हैं

nor weakened by nostalgia.

और न ही कमजोर होते हैं ।

There's not a lot of room for either

इन दोनों अवस्थाओं के लिए,

in the malarial swamps of the Asmat

न तो असमत के दलदल में और न ही तिब्बत की बर्फीली हवाओं में स्थान होता है,

or in the chilling winds of Tibet, but they have, nevertheless,

through time and ritual, forged a traditional mystique of the Earth

that is based not on the idea of being self-consciously close to it,

but on a far subtler intuition:

the idea that the Earth itself can only exist

because it is breathed into being by human consciousness.

Now, what does that mean?

It means that a young kid from the Andes

who's raised to believe that that mountain is an Apu spirit

पालन-पोषण करते हुए उसे यह बताए कि

that will direct his or her destiny

will be a profoundly different human being

and have a different relationship to that resource

or that place than a young kid from Montana

raised to believe that a mountain is a pile of rock

ready to be mined.

Whether it's the abode of a spirit or a pile of ore is irrelevant.

चाहे वह आत्मा हो या धातु का ढेर हो यह सब बेकार की बातें हैं ।

What's interesting is the metaphor that defines the relationship

इसमें व्यक्ति विशेष तथा प्राकृतिक संसार के

between the individual and the natural world.

बीच संबंध दर्शाने वाले लक्षण रुचिकारक हैं ।

I was raised in the forests of British Columbia

मैं ब्रिटिश कोलम्बिया के जंगलों में पला बढा़ था,

to believe those forests existed to be cut.

जहाँ ये माना जाता था कि जंगलों का अस्तित्व ही काटने के लिये है।

That made me a different human being

than my friends amongst the Kwagiulth

who believe that those forests were the abode of Huxwhukw

Now, if you begin to look at the idea

that these cultures could create different realities,

you could begin to understand

but it's mixed with the leaves of a shrub in the coffee family

called Psychotria viridis.

This plant had in it some very powerful tryptamines,

very close to brain serotonin, dimethyltryptamine,

If you've ever seen the Yanomami

that substance they make from a different set of species

also contains methoxydimethyltryptamine.

To have that powder blown up your nose

is rather like being shot out of a rifle barrel

lined with baroque paintings and landing on a sea of electricity. (Laughter)

It doesn't create the distortion of reality;

it creates the dissolution of reality.

Now, the fascinating things

Well, what does that mean?

This tribe, the Cofan, has 17 varieties of ayahuasca,

all of which they distinguish a great distance in the forest,

all of which are referable to our eye as one species.

And then you ask them how they establish their taxonomy

and they say, "I thought you knew something about plants.

Well, the truth is the 20th century, 300 years from now,

is not going to be remembered for its wars

or its technological innovations,

तकनीकी क्षोध के लिए नहीं याद किया जाएगा,

but rather as the era in which we stood by

and either actively endorsed or passively accepted

the massive destruction of both biological and cultural diversity

All cultures through all time

हर समय सभी सांस्‍कृतियां

have constantly been engaged in a dance

with new possibilities of life.

बदलाव में व्‍यस्‍त रही है।

And the problem is not technology itself.

तकनीक खुद ही एक समस्‍या नहीं है।

The Sioux Indians did not stop being Sioux

जब सियोक्स भारतीयों ने तीर-कमान त्याग दिया

when they gave up the bow and arrow

तो उन्होंने सियोक्स कहलाना बंद नहीं किया।

any more than an American stopped being an American

कि अमरीकी ने धोड़ा गाड़ी को छोड़ने के बाद

when he gave up the horse and buggy.

खुद को अमरीकी कहना बंद कर दिया।

It's not change or technology

बदलाव या तकनीक से नृवंशी को

that threatens the integrity of the ethnosphere. It is power,

the crude face of domination.

Wherever you look around the world,

you discover that these are not cultures destined to fade away;

and now have all been reduced to servitude and prostitution

that seems to be carrying half of Borneo away

to the South China Sea,

where the Japanese freighters hang light in the horizon

जहां पर जापानी मालवाहक किनारों पर वनों से काटे गए

ready to fill their holds with raw logs ripped from the forest --

पेड़ों के तनों को पकड़ने के लिए तैयार खड़े हो।

or, in the case of the Yanomami,

या यानोमामी के मामले में दखें

it's the disease entities that have come in,

तो वहां सोने की खोज के चलते

in the wake of the discovery of gold.

रोग के रूप में वास्‍तविकता सामने आई है।

Or if we go into the mountains of Tibet,

या फिर हम अगर तिब्‍बत के पर्वतों की ओर जाएं,

where I'm doing a lot of research recently,

जहां पर मैं हाल ही में बहुत सा क्षोध कार्य कर रहा था,

you'll see it's a crude face of political domination.

वहां आप राजनैतिक प्रभाव का बिगड़ा रूप देख पाएंगे।

You know, genocide, the physical extinction of a people

आप लोगों का लुप्‍त होना यानि वृंश संहार को तो समझते होगे

is universally condemned, but ethnocide,

इसकी विश्‍व भर में निन्‍दा की जाती है।

the destruction of people's way of life, is not only not condemned,

परंतु, नृवंश संहार; जिसमें लोगों के जीने के तरीके का नाश हो रहा हो,

it's universally, in many quarters, celebrated

विश्‍व भर में उसकी निंदा नहीं की जाती परंतु

as part of a development strategy.

साथ ही उस पर खुशियां मनाई जाती हैं कि वह तो विकास का एक अंश है।

And you cannot understand the pain of Tibet

आप उसकी जमीन से जुड़े बिना

until you move through it at the ground level.

तिब्‍बत की पीड़ा को नहीं समझ सकते हैं।

I once travelled 6,000 miles from Chengdu in Western China

एक बार मैंने एक युवा साथी के

overland through southeastern Tibet to Lhasa

साथ दक्षिण पूर्वी तिब्‍बत से होकर पश्‍चिमी चीन में

with a young colleague, and it was only when I got to Lhasa

during the Cultural Revolution.

को शासन द्वारा मौत के घाट उतारा गया।

This young man's father had been ascribed to the Panchen Lama.

इस युवक के पिता पर पांचेन लामा का आरोपण किया गया।

That meant he was instantly killed

उसका अर्थ था कि उन्‍हें चीन द्वारा

at the time of the Chinese invasion.

आक्रमण के समय तुरंत मार दिया गया।

His uncle fled with His Holiness in the Diaspora

इसका रिश्‍तेदार जन विसर्जन के दौरान

that took the people to Nepal.

धर्मगुरू के साथ नेपाल चला गया।

His mother was incarcerated

इसकी मां को कैद कर लिया गया –

for the crime of being wealthy.

यह उनके लिए धनवान होने की सजा थी।

He was smuggled into the jail at the age of two

इसे दो वर्ष की आयु में जेल के भीतर घुसा दिया गया

to hide beneath her skirt tails

जहां इसे मां की र्स्‍कट के पीछे छुपना पड़ा,

because she couldn't bear to be without him.

ऐसा इसलिए किया गया क्‍योंकि मां इसके बिना नहीं रह सकती थी।

The sister who had done that brave deed

जिस बहन ने यह बहादुरी का काम किया

was put into an education camp.

उसे शिक्षा शिविर में भर्ती करा दिया गया।

One day she inadvertently stepped on an armband

एक दिन उसने गलती से माओ के एक बाजूबंद

of Mao, and for that transgression,

पर पांव रख दिया, उसे इस अपराध के लिए

she was given seven years of hard labor.

सात वर्षों का कठोर परिश्रम बतौर सजा दिया गया।

The pain of Tibet can be impossible to bear,

तिब्‍बत की परेशानी असहनीय थी,

but the redemptive spirit of the people is something to behold.

लेकिन लोगों के जीने की इच्छा मान रखने लायक थी।

And in the end, then, it really comes down to a choice:

अंत में यह एक ही विकल्‍प पर पहुंचता है।

do we want to live in a monochromatic world of monotony

क्‍या हम एक ही ढंग से सादगीपूर्ण जीवन व्‍यतीत करना चाहते हैं

or do we want to embrace a polychromatic world of diversity?

या फिर हम विविधवता के संसार की रंगीनियों को अपनाना चाहते हैं?

Margaret Mead, the great anthropologist, said, before she died,

that her greatest fear was that as we drifted towards

this blandly amorphous generic world view

not only would we see the entire range of the human imagination

reduced to a more narrow modality of thought,

having forgotten there were even other possibilities.

And it's humbling to remember that our species has, perhaps,

The Neolithic Revolution -- which gave us agriculture,

The modern industrial world as we know it

is barely 300 years old.

Now, that shallow history doesn't suggest to me

that we have all the answers for all of the challenges

that will confront us in the ensuing millennia.

When these myriad cultures of the world

जब हम विश्‍व की इन असंख्‍य संस्‍कृतियों से

are asked the meaning of being human,

मनुष्‍य होने का अर्थ पूछते हैं

they respond with 10,000 different voices.

तो वे 10,000 अलग-अलग आवाजों में उत्‍तर देते हैं।

And it's within that song that we will all rediscover the possibility

of being what we are: a fully conscious species,

fully aware of ensuring that all peoples and all gardens

This is a photograph I took at the northern tip of Baffin Island

when I went narwhal hunting with some Inuit people,

and this man, Olayuk, told me a marvelous story of his grandfather.

The Canadian government has not always been kind

कनाडा की सरकार कभी भी इन्‍यूट लोगों के लिए दयालु नहीं रही

to the Inuit people, and during the 1950s,

to establish our sovereignty, we forced them into settlements.

This old man's grandfather refused to go.

The family, fearful for his life, took away all of his weapons,

Now, you must understand that the Inuit did not fear the cold;

So, this man's grandfather was not intimidated by the Arctic night

He simply slipped outside, pulled down his sealskin trousers

he shaped it into the form of a blade.

He skinned the dog and improvised a harness,

उन्‍होंने कुत्‍ते की खाल उतार कर अपनी गाड़ी की जीन को सुधारा,

took the ribcage of the dog and improvised a sled,

कुत्‍ते की पसलियों के ढांचे का प्रयोग कर अपनी गाड़ी को बेहतर बनाया;

harnessed up an adjacent dog,

फिर पास खड़े एक कुत्‍ते को बांध कर बर्फ के ढेरों पर लुप्‍त हो गए,

and disappeared over the ice floes, shit knife in belt.

The Canadian government in April of 1999

अप्रैल 1999 में कनाडा सरकार ने

gave back to total control of the Inuit

कैलीफोर्निया और टैकसास को जोड़कर बनने वाले

an area of land larger than California and Texas put together.

क्षेत्र से भी अधिक क्षेत्र इन्‍यूट लोगों को पूर्णत: दे दिया।

It's our new homeland. It's called Nunavut.

यह हमारी नई मातृभूमि है। इसे नूनावत कहते हैं।

It's an independent territory. They control all mineral resources.

यह एक स्‍वतंत्र क्षेत्र है। ये सभी खनिज संसाधनों पर नियंत्रण रखते हैं।

An amazing example of how a nation-state

यह लोगों द्वारा प्रत्‍यर्पण पाने का राष्‍ट्र-प्रदेश

can seek restitution with its people.

प्राप्‍त करने का एक अदभुत उदाहरण है।

And finally, in the end, I think it's pretty obvious

और अंत में यह हम सभी के लिए

at least to all of all us who've traveled

और उनके लिए जिन्‍होंने

in these remote reaches of the planet,

इन दूर स्‍थित जगहों पर यात्रा की है;

to realize that they're not remote at all.

They're homelands of somebody.

to places of such cultural wonder
