I was 14 years old

inside of a bowling alley,

a security guard grabbed my arm, so I ran.

I ran down the street, and I jumped on top of a fence.

And when I got to the top,

So when I came to, the security guard was standing on top of me,

I was taken to juvenile hall

and when I was released into the custody of my mother,

the first words my uncle said was, "How'd you get caught?"

I said, "Man, the book bag was too heavy."

He said, "Man, you weren't supposed to take all the quarters."

And 10 minutes later, he took me to burglarize another arcade game.

We needed gas money to get home.

That was my life.

I grew up in Oakland, California,

with my mother and members of my immediate family

addicted to crack cocaine.

My environment consisted of living with family, friends,

and homeless shelters.

Oftentimes, dinner was served in breadlines and soup kitchens.

अक्सर खाना भी फ़्री जगहों पर और परमार्थ के लिए चलने वाली रसोईयो में होता था।

The big homey told me this:

गैंगबाज़ी में मेरा गुरु एक दोस्त बोला:

money rules the world

दुनिया में सिर्फ़ पैसे की चलती है

and everything in it.

पैसा सब कुछ दे सकता है।

And in these streets, money is king.

और पैसा इन गलियों का राजा है।

And if you follow the money,

और अगर आप पैसे के पीछे भागेंगे,

it'll lead you to the bad guy or the good guy.

तो या तो ग़लत लोगों तक पहुँचेंगे, या सही लोगों तक।

Soon after, I committed my first crime,

and it was the first time that I was told that I had potential

and felt like somebody believed in me.

Nobody ever told me that I could be a lawyer,

कभी किसी ने मुझे वकील बनने को नहीं कहा,

doctor or engineer.

या डॉक्टर या इंजीनियर बनने को।

I mean, how was I supposed to do that? I couldn't read, write or spell.

मतलब, मैं ये सब कैसे कर सकता था? मुझे तो लिखना पढ़ना तक नहीं आता था।

I was illiterate.

मैं बिलकुल निरक्षर था।

So I always thought crime was my way to go.

मैं सोचता था की अपराध मेरा एकमात्र रास्ता है।

And then one day

और फिर एक दिन

I was talking to somebody

मैं किसी से बात कर रहा था

and he was telling me about this robbery that we could do.

और उसने मुझसे कहा कि हम एक जगह डकैती कर सकते हैं।

And we did it.

The reality was that I was growing up

सच बात ये थी की मैं पल बढ़ रहा था

in the strongest financial nation in the world,

the United States of America,

while I watched my mother stand in line at a blood bank

लेकिन मेरी माँ ख़ून बेच कर पैसे कमाने वालों की लाइन में खड़ी मिलती थी

to sell her blood for 40 dollars just to try to feed her kids.

40 डॉलर में अपना ख़ून बेच कर अपने बच्चों का पेट भरने के लिए।

She still has the needle marks on her arms to day to show for that.

आज तक उनकी बाँहों में सुइयों के निशान देखे जा सकते हैं।

So I never cared about my community.

तो मुझे अपने लोगों की परवाह नहीं थी।

They didn't care about my life.

ना उन्हें मेरी कोई फ़िक्र थी।

Everybody there was doing what they were doing to take what they wanted,

वहाँ हर कोई जो मन आए करता था, जो चाहिए उसे पाने के लिए,

the drug dealers, the robbers, the blood bank.

ड्रग बेचना, चोरी डाका करना ख़ून बेचना

Everybody was taking blood money.

सब लोग ग़लत पैसा कमा रहे थे।

So I got mine by any means necessary.

और मैं भी हर तरीक़े का पैसा कमाता था।

I got mine.

बस पैसा ज़रूरी था।

Financial literacy really did rule the world,

सिर्फ़ पैसे का ही महत्व था

and I was a child slave to it

और मैं बचपन से इस तरह के जीवन का ग़ुलाम था,

following the bad guy.

ग़लत उदाहरणों से सीख कर।

At 17 years old, I was arrested for robbery and murder

17 साल की उम्र में मुझे डाके और ख़ून के लिए गिरफ़्तार कर लिया गया

and I soon learned that finances in prison rule more than they did on the streets,

और जल्दी मुझे समझ आ गया की जेल में तो पैसे की और भी ज़्यादा चलती है,

so I wanted in.

तो मुझे भी शामिल होना था।

One day, I rushed to grab the sports page of the newspaper

एक दिन मैं अख़बार का खेल वाला पन्ना ले कर

so my cellie could read it to me,

अपने सेल पार्ट्नर से पढ़वाने ले गया,

and I accidentally picked up the business section.

और ग़लती से बिज़नस वाला पन्ना ले आया।

And this old man said, "Hey youngster, you pick stocks?"

तो इस बूढ़े आदमी ने पूछा, "लड़के, तुम स्टॉक ख़रीदते हो?"

And I said, "What's that?"

और मैंने कहा, "वो क्या ?"

He said, "That's the place where white folks keep all their money."

उसने कहा, "ये वो जगह है जहाँ श्वेत लोग अपना सारा पैसा रखते हैं।"

(Laughter)

And it was the first time that I saw a glimpse of hope,

और पहले बार मुझे आशा की कोई किरण दिखी,

a future.

He gave me this brief description of what stocks were,

but it was just a glimpse.

I mean, how was I supposed to do it?

I couldn't read, write or spell.

The skills that I had developed to hide my illiteracy

अपनी निरक्षरता छिपाने के मेरे तरीक़े यहाँ

no longer worked in this environment.

इस मामले में काम नहीं आने वाले थे।

I was trapped in a cage, prey among predators,

मैं जैसे पिंजरे में फँस गया था, शिकारियों के बीच शिकार जैसे,

fighting for freedom I never had.

अपनी आज़ादी के लिए लड़ते हुए।

I was lost, tired,

मैं दिशाहीन और थका हुआ था

and I was out of options.

और कोई विकल्प नहीं था।

So at 20 years old,

तो जब मैं 20 साल का हुआ,

I did the hardest thing I'd ever done in my life.

मैंने अपने जीवन का सबसे कठिन काम किया।

I picked up a book,

मैंने एक किताब उठायी,

and it was the most agonizing time of my life,

trying to learn how to read,

the ostracizing from my family,

the homeys.

It was rough, man.

It was a struggle.

But little did I know

I was receiving the greatest gifts I had ever dreamed of:

self-worth,

उपहार आत्म-सम्मान का,

knowledge, discipline.

ज्ञान और अनुशासन का।

I was so excited to be reading that I read everything I could get my hands on:

मैं पढ़ने को ले कर इतना उत्साहित था कि जो भी मिलता था, मैं पढ़ जाता था:

candy wrappers, clothing logos, street signs, everything.

टॉफ़ी की पन्नी, कपड़ों के स्टिकर, ट्रैफ़िक साइन, सब कुछ।

I was just reading stuff!

मैं जुनून से पढ़ रहा था!

Just reading stuff.

बस पढ़ते ही जा रहा था।

I was so excited to know how to read and know how to spell.

मुझे पढ़ने और स्पेलिंग सीखने में ज़बरदस्त मज़ा आ रहा था।

The homey came up, said, "Man, what you eating?"

एक गैंग वाले दोस्त ने पूछा, "भाई, क्या खा रहा है?"

I said, "C-A-N-D-Y, candy."

मैंने कहा, "सी ए अन डी वाई, कैंडी।"

(Laughter)

(ठहाका)

He said, "Let me get some." I said, "N-O. No."

उस ने कहा, "मुझे भी थोड़ा दो।" मैंने कहा, "एन ओ, नो।"

(Laughter)

It was awesome.

बहुत मज़ा आ रहा था।

I mean, I can actually now for the first time in my life read.

मतलब, मैं अब जीवन में पहली बार ख़ुद पढ़ सकता था।

The feeling that I got from it was amazing.

मुझे लगा जैसे मेरे पाँवो में पंख लगे हों।

And then at 22, feeling myself,

और फिर 22 के उम्र में,

feeling confident,

आत्म विश्वास से भरे होने पर,

I remembered what the OG told me.

मुझे उस बूढ़े की बात याद आयी।

So I picked up the business section of the newspaper.

तो मैंने अख़बार का बिज़नेस वाला पन्ना उठाया।

I wanted to find these rich white folks.

मुझे इन रईस श्वेत लोगों से मिलना था।

So I looked for that glimpse.

तो मैं उस मौक़े की तलाश में रहने लगा।

As I furthered my career

जैसे जैसे मैंने अपना काम बढ़ाया

in teaching others how to financially manage money and invest,

और लोगों को सिखाने का कि अपने पैसे रुपए का कैसे ध्यान रखें,

I soon learned that I had to take responsibility for my own actions.

मुझे ये समझ आ गया की अपने किए के लिए ज़िम्मेदार होना होगा।

True, I grew up in a very complex environment,

ये सच था कि मैं बहुत कठिन परिवेश में पला था,

but I chose to commit crimes,

मगर मैंने अपराध की राह ख़ुद चुनी थी,

and I had to own up to that.

और मुझे उस की ज़िम्मेदारी लेनी होगी।

I had to take responsibility for that, and I did.

और मैंने वो ज़िम्मेदारी ली।

I was building a curriculum that could teach incarcerated men

मैंने जेल गए लोगों के लिए एक पाठ्यक्रम तैयार किया

how to manage money through prison employments.

कि कैसे जेल में कमाए गए पैसे को उपयोग मी लाये ।

Properly managing our lifestyle would provide transferrable tools

अग़ल हम रहन सहन ठीक रखे तो हमें ऐसे तरीक़े आ जाएँगे

that we can use to manage money when we reenter society,

जिस से हम जेल से छूटने के बाद अपने पैसे को ठीक से इस्तेमाल करें

like the majority of people did who didn't commit crimes.

जैसे की तमाम वो लोग करते हैं जो बिना अपराध किए जीते हैं।

Then I discovered

तब मुझे पता चला कि

that according to MarketWatch,

मार्केट वॉच के हिसाब से,

over 60 percent of the American population

60 पर्सेंट से ज़्यादा अमरीकियों के पास

has under 1,000 dollars in savings.

1,000 डॉलर से भी काम की बचत है।

Sports Illustrated said that over 60 percent of NBA players

स्पोर्ट्स इलस्ट्रेटेड कहता है कि 60 पर्सेंट से ज़्यादा NBA

and NFL players go broke.

और NFL खिलाड़ी कंगाल होते हैं।

40 percent of marital problems derive from financial issues.

40 प्रतिशत से ज़्यादा शादियाँ आर्थिक कारणों से टूटती हैं।

What the hell?

आख़िर चल क्या रहा था?

You mean to tell me that people worked their whole lives,

मतलब जो लोग उम्र भर काम करते हैं,

buying cars, clothes, homes and material stuff

कार, कपड़े, घर ख़रीदते हैं,

but were living check to check?

अगर वो महीने की सैलरी पर जीते हैं?

How in the world were members of society going to help incarcerated individuals

तो आख़िर कैसे हम जेल गए हुए लोगों के मदद करेंगे

back into society

अपराध छोड़ने में

if they couldn't manage they own stuff?

अगर वो अपने पैसे का ख़याल नहीं रख सके?

We screwed.

हमारी लगी पड़ी है।

I needed a better plan.

हमें कोई बेहतर तरीका चाहिए।

This is not going to work out too well.

ऐसे तो नहीं चलने वाला है।

So ...

तो---

I thought.

मैंने सोचा।

I now had an obligation to meet those on the path

मेरी ज़िम्मेदारी बनते है की इस रास्ते पर चलते लोगों की

and help,

मदद करूँ,

and it was crazy because I now cared about my community.

और ये अजीब था क्योंकि अब मैं लोगों की फ़िक्र कर रहा था

Wow, imagine that. I cared about my community.

तो मैंने सोचा था की वो भी मेरी फ़िक्र करेंगे।

Financial illiteracy is a disease

आर्थिक समझ ना होना एक बीमारी जैसा है

that has crippled minorities and the lower class in our society

जो कि अल्प-संख्यको और ग़रीब तबके के लोगों को विकलांग करती है

for generations and generations,

कई कई पीढ़ियों तक,

and we should be furious about that.

और इस बीमारी से ताक़त के साथ लड़ना होगा।

Ask yourselves this:

ख़ुद से ये सवाल कीजिए:

How can 50 percent of the American population

ऐसा कैसे है कि 50 प्रतिशत अमरीकी जनता

be financially illiterate in a nation driven by financial prosperity?

रुपए पैसे की समझ के बिना जीते है, वो भी इतने रईस देश में?

Our access to justice, our social status,

हमारी पहुँच न्याय तक, सामाजिक स्तर पर,

living conditions, transportation and food

जीने के स्तर, परिवहन और भोजन तक,

are all dependent on money that most people can't manage.

ये सब पैसे पर निर्भर करते है जिसे ज़्यादातर लोग समझते ही नहीं।

It's crazy!

ये बहुत बढ़ी गड़बड़ है!

It's an epidemic

ये महामारी जैसा ख़तरनाक है

and a bigger danger to public safety than any other issue.

और जनता की सुरक्षा के प्रति बहुत बड़ा ख़तरा भी है।

According to the California Department of Corrections,

कैलिफ़ोरनिया के सुधार विभाग के अनुसार,

over 70 percent of those incarcerated

70% प्रतिशत से ज़्यादा क़ैदी

have committed or have been charged with money-related crimes:

पैसे से जुड़े अपराधों के आरोपी हैं:

robberies, burglaries, fraud, larceny, extortion --

डकैती, चोरियाँ, ग़बन, फिरौती --

and the list goes on.

और ये लिस्ट बहुत लम्बी है।

Check this out:

एक और बात जानिए:

a typical incarcerated person

एक औसत क़ैदी

would enter the California prison system

जो कैलिफ़ोरनिया के जेल सिस्टम में जाता है

with no financial education,

बिना किसी आर्थिक शिक्षा के,

earn 30 cents an hour,

वो 30 सेंट प्रति घंटे कमाता है,

over 800 dollars a year,

क़रीब 800 डॉलर सालाना,

with no real expenses and save no money.

उसकी कोई बचत वग़ैरह नहीं होती है,

Upon his parole, he will be given 200 dollars gate money and told,

और जब वो जेल से छूटता है तो उसे 200 डॉलर दे कर कहा जाता है,

"Hey, good luck, stay out of trouble. Don't come back to prison."

"शुभकामनायें! कोशिश कीजिए फिर से जेल ना जाना पड़े।"

With no meaningful preparation or long-term financial plan,

बिना किसी तैयारी के, या भविष्य के आर्थिक प्लान के,

what does he do ... ?

वो करे क्या?

At 60?

वो भी 60 की उम्र में?

Get a good job,

एक अच्छी नौकरी ढूँढे,

or go back to the very criminal behavior that led him to prison in the first place?

या उसी आपराधिक राह पर निकल जाए जिस ने उसे जेल तक पहुँचाया था?

You taxpayers, you choose.

आप टैक्स देते हैं, आप बताइए।

Well, his education already chose for him, probably.

देखिए, उस की पढ़ाई के कमी ने उस का रास्ता निश्चित कर दिया है।

So how do we cure this disease?

तो हम इस बीमारी से कैसे निपटें?

I cofounded a program

मैंने एक कार्यक्रम की सह-स्थापना की

that we call Financial Empowerment Emotional Literacy.

जिसे हम फ़ायनैन्शल एमपोवेरमेंट इमोशनल लिटरेसी कहते हैं

We call it FEEL,

यानि FEEL,

and it teaches how do you separate your emotional decisions

from your financial decisions,

अपने आर्थिक फ़ैसलों से अलग कैसे रखें,

and the four timeless rules to personal finance:

और चार ऐसे नियम जो आपको आर्थिक रूप से ठीक रखेंगे:

the proper way to save,

बचत करने का सही तरीक़ा,

control your cost of living,

अपने रहन सहन को क़ाबू में रखना

borrow money effectively

उधार ठीक तरीक़े से लेना

and diversify your finances by allowing your money to work for you

और अपने पैसे को अलग अलग जगह लगाना जिस से आपका पैसा आपके लिए काम कर सके,

instead of you working for it.

बजाय इस के की आप पैसे के लिए काम करें।

Incarcerated people need these life skills before we reenter society.

जेल गए लोगों को इन हुनर को सीखना होगा अगर वो वापस समाज में जाना चाहता हैं।

You can't have full rehabilitation without these life skills.

बिना इस के पूरी तरह समाज में लौटना नामुमकिन है।

This idea that only professionals can invest and manage money

ये सोच की केवल पेशेवर लोग ही निवेश और पैसे की देखभाल कर सकते हैं

is absolutely ridiculous,

सरासर ग़लत है,

and whoever told you that is lying.

और जो भी आप से ये कहता है, वो झूठा है।

A professional is a person

पेशेवर व्यक्ति बिलकुल

who knows his craft better than most,

आम आदमी से ज़्यादा बेहतर हो सकता है,

and nobody knows how much money you need, have or want better than you,

मगर कोई आपसे बेहतर ये नहीं जानता है कि आपको कब कितने पैसे की ज़रूरत पड़ेगी,

which means you are the professional.

और इस लिहाज़ से आप भी पेशेवर ही हुए।

Financial literacy is not a skill, ladies and gentlemen.

आर्थिक समझ कोई हुनर नहीं है, देवियों और सज्जनों,

It's a lifestyle.

वो जीने का एक तरीक़ा है।

Financial stability is a byproduct of a proper lifestyle.

आर्थिक स्थिरता उस तरीक़े से जीने का फल है।

A financially sound incarcerated person can become a taxpaying citizen,

आर्थिक रूप से स्वस्थ व्यक्ति टैक्स देने वाला नागरिक बन सकता है,

and a financially sound taxpaying citizen can remain one.

और आर्थिक रूप से स्वस्थ टैक्स देने वाला नागरिक सदा वैसा बना रह सकता है।

This allows us to create a bridge between those people who we influence:

इस से हमें जोड़ने का मौक़ा मिलता है उन लोगों को जो हमारी बात सुनते हैं

family, friends and those young people

जैसे परिवार और दोस्त, उन युवा लोगों से

who still believe that crime and money are related.

जो अभी भी अपराध को पैसा कमाने का इकलौता रास्ता समझते हैं।

So let's lose the fear and anxiety

तो आइए डर और तनाव से आगे बढ़ें

of all the big financial words

and all that other nonsense that you've been out there hearing.

And let's get to the heart of what's been crippling our society

from taking care of your responsibility to be better life managers.

And let's provide a simple and easy to use curriculum

that gets to the heart, the heart
