I come from a family of five brothers,

all scientists and engineers.

A few years ago, I sent them the following email:

Brother number one replied.

He was encouraging but a bit skeptical.

He said, "I wish you the best of luck.

Brother number two was a little bit more skeptical.

Well, the rest of my brothers were so enthusiastic about my decision,

they didn't even respond.

I know that the skepticism coming from my brothers

And you know what? They were right.

It is such a challenge to be a full-time artist.

I have so many friends who need to have a second job

as a plan B in order to pay for the bills,

except that plan B sometimes becomes their plan A.

And it's not just my friends and I who experience this.

The US Census Bureau states that only 10 percent of art school graduates

end up working as full-time artists.

The other 90 percent, they change careers,

they work in marketing, sales, education and other fields.

But this is not news, right?

We almost expect the artist to be a struggling artist.

हम सभी कलाकारो को संघर्षशील कलाकार मानते है |

But why should we expect that?

पर हम यह उम्मीद क्यों कर रहे है?

I read an article in the "Huffington Post"

मैंने "हफिंगटन पोस्ट" मैं एक लेख पढ़ा था

saying that four years ago, the European Union

उसमैं लिखा था चार साल पहेले, यूरोपियन संघने

began the world's largest ever arts funding initiative.

दुनिया का सबसे बड़े कला के निधिकरण करने की पहल की है

Creative Europe will give 2.4 billion dollars

to over 300,000 artists.

In contrast, the US budget for our National Endowment for the Arts,

the largest single funder for the arts across the United States,

is merely 146 million dollars.

To put things into perspective,

the US budget for the military marching bands alone

is almost twice as much as the entire NEA.

Another striking image comes from Brendan McMahon for the "Huffington Post,"

saying that out of the one trillion dollar budget

for military and defense-related spending,

Now, I know we live in a capitalist society,

So let's look at it from a financial angle, shall we?

The US nonprofit arts industry

generates more than 166 billion dollars in economic activity,

it employs 5.7 million people

and it returns 12.6 billion dollars

But this is only a financial angle, right?

We all know that the arts is way more than just an economic value.

The arts brings meaning to life.

It's the spirit of our culture.

It brings people together and it supports creativity

and social cohesion.

और समाजकी एकजुटता को बढ़ावा देती है|

But if the arts contributes this much to our economy,

पर जो कला का योगदान अर्थव्यवस्था में इतना है,

why then do we still invest so little in arts and artists?

फिर भी हम कला और कलाकार मैं इतना कम निवेश क्यों करते है?

Why do more than 80 percent of our schools nationwide

क्यों देशकी ८० प्रतिशत स्कुलमैं

still experience budget cuts in arts education programs?

कला शिक्षण का बजट कटा जाता है?

What is it about the value of arts and artists

कला और कलाकार का मूल्य क्या है

that we still don't understand?

जो हम समाज नहीं पा रहे?

I believe the system is flawed and far from being fair,

मुझे लगता है तंत्रमें गड़बड़ी है और अच्छी से काफी दूर है,

and I want to help change that.

और में यह बदलने में मदद करना चाहता हूँ|

I want to live in a society

मैं ऐसे समाज में जीना चाहता हु

where artists are more valued

and have more cultural and financial support

so they can focus on creating arts instead of being forced to drive Ubers

ताकि वे कला पर ध्यान दे सके, नाकि उनपे उबर ड्राइवर बनने का दबाव हो

or take corporate jobs they'd rather not have.

या कोई कोर्पोरेट नौकरी ले जिसकी उनको जरूरत नहीं|

There are other sources of income for artists, however.

फिरभी, कलाकारों को पैसे कमाने के औरभी स्त्रोत है|

There are private foundations,

कई निजी संस्थाऐ है,

grants and patrons who give money,

जो अनुदान और दान के लिए पैसे देती है,

except a vast majority of artists don't know about these opportunities.

पर ज्यादातर कलाकारों को उन अवसरों के बारे मैं पता नहीं होता|

On one side you have institutions and people with money.

एक ओर आपके पास संस्था है और धनवान लोग है|

On the other side you have artists seeking funding,

दूसरी ओर कलाकार धन खोज रहे है|

but the artists don't know about the people with the money,

पर कलाकार धनवानों को नहीं जानते,

and the people with the money don't necessarily know

और धनवानों को जानने की ज़रुरत नहीं लगती

about the artists out there.

इन सभी कलाकारों को|

This is why I am very excited to share "Grantpa,"

इसी लिए मुझे ख़ुशी हो रही है आपको "ग्रांटपा" के बारे मैं बताते हुए

an online platform that uses technology

यह एक ऑनलाइन मंच है जो तकनीक को

to match artists with grants and funding opportunities

कलाकार को अनुदान और निधिकरण से जोड़ता है

in a way that is easy, fast and less intimidating.

यह आसान, जल्दी और कम परेशानीवाला रास्ता है

Grantpa is only one step towards solving an existing problem

ग्रांटपा एक कदम है परेशानी सुल्जाने की तरफ,

of funding inequality,

but we need to work collectively on multiple fronts

to reevaluate how we view the artists in our society.

Do we think of arts as a luxury or a necessity?

Do we understand what goes on in the day-to-day life of an artist,

or do we still believe that artists, no matter how struggling they are,

या अभी भी हम ये मानते है की वो कितनाभी संघर्ष करे,

are happy simply because they're following their passion?

वे खुश है क्युकी वे अपने जूनून को अहमियत देते है?

In a few years, I plan to send my brothers the following email:

कुछ सालोमै, मेंने अपने भाईओ को निम्नलिखित ईमेल भेजनेका सोचा है:

"Dear brothers, I hope this message finds you well.

"प्यारे भाईओ,"प्यारे भाइओ, मुझे आशा है की यह सन्देश आपको अच्छा लगे |

I am emailing to let you know that I am doing great

मैंने यह ईमेल आपको यह बताने के लिए किया है की में बढ़िया हूँ

and so are hundreds of thousands of artists

और दुसरे हजारो कलाकारभी

who are being valued more culturally and financially

जिनका सांस्कृतिक और आर्थिक मुल्यांकन ज्यादा है

और उनको पर्याप्त अनुदान मिलता है ताकि वे अपनी कला पर ध्यान दे सके

and getting enough funding to focus on their crafts

and create more art.

और ज्यादा रचनाऐ बना सके |

I appreciate all of your support.
