I come from a family of five brothers,

all scientists and engineers.

A few years ago, I sent them the following email:

"Dear brothers, I hope this message finds you well.

I am emailing to let you know

that I'm dropping out of my master's program in engineering

to pursue a career as a full-time musician.

All that I ask from you is not to worry about me."

Brother number one replied.

맏형에게서 회신이 왔죠.

He was encouraging but a bit skeptical.

격려와 함께 약간의 우려도 있었어요.

He said, "I wish you the best of luck.

그가 말하길 "행운을 빌어.

You're going to need it."

운이 따라줘야 할거야."

Brother number two was a little bit more skeptical.

He said, "Don't do it!

This will be the worst mistake of your life.

Well, the rest of my brothers were so enthusiastic about my decision,

they didn't even respond.

I know that the skepticism coming from my brothers

is out of care and concern for me.

They were worried.

They thought it would be difficult to make it as an artist,

예술가로 성공하기란 어려운 일이라고 생각했죠.

that it will be a challenge.

힘든 도전일거라고요.

And you know what? They were right.

아세요? 그들이 옳았어요.

It is such a challenge to be a full-time artist.

전업 예술가로 사는 건 정말로 큰 도전입니다.

I have so many friends who need to have a second job

많은 친구들이 부업을 해서

as a plan B in order to pay for the bills,

여러 가지 지출에 대비해야 해요.

except that plan B sometimes becomes their plan A.

가끔은 부업이 오히려 전업으로 바뀌기도 한답니다.

And it's not just my friends and I who experience this.

이건 제 친구들뿐만 아니라 제가 겪기도 한 것이죠.

The US Census Bureau states that only 10 percent of art school graduates

미국 통계국에 따르면 예술학교 줄업생 중 단 10%만이

end up working as full-time artists.

전업 예술가로 살아간다고 해요.

The other 90 percent, they change careers,

나머지 90%는 직업을 바꿔서

they work in marketing, sales, education and other fields.

마케팅, 영업, 교육과 같은 다른 직종에 종사합니다.

But this is not news, right?

하지만 이건 새로운 얘기는 아니죠?

We almost expect the artist to be a struggling artist.

우리는 예술가는 궁핍할거라 생각들 합니다.

But why should we expect that?

왜 그렇게 생각할까요?

I read an article in the "Huffington Post"

허핑턴 포스트에서 이런 기사를 읽었습니다.

saying that four years ago, the European Union

4년 전 유럽연합은

began the world's largest ever arts funding initiative.

세계 최대 규모의 예술 후원 사업을 시작했습니다.

Creative Europe will give 2.4 billion dollars

크리에이티브 유럽(Creative Europe)이 24억 달러를

to over 300,000 artists.

30만 명의 예술가에게 지원한다는 계획이었죠.

In contrast, the US budget for our National Endowment for the Arts,

이에 반해, 미국의 국립예술기금은

the largest single funder for the arts across the United States,

미국을 통틀어 단일 기금으로는 최대 규모임에도 불구하고

is merely 146 million dollars.

고작 1억 4,600만 달러에 불과해요.

To put things into perspective,

the US budget for the military marching bands alone

미국 군악대에 편성된 예산이

is almost twice as much as the entire NEA.

Another striking image comes from Brendan McMahon for the "Huffington Post,"

saying that out of the one trillion dollar budget

for military and defense-related spending,

if only 0.05 percent were allocated to the arts,

Now, I know we live in a capitalist society,

and profits matter a lot.

이윤이란 무척 중요한 부분이죠.

So let's look at it from a financial angle, shall we?

그렇다면 재무적 관점에서 살펴볼까요?

The US nonprofit arts industry

미국의 비영리 예술산업은

generates more than 166 billion dollars in economic activity,

1,660억 달러의 경제적 효과를 창출하죠.

it employs 5.7 million people

570만 명의 고용 유발 효과와

and it returns 12.6 billion dollars

126억 달러에 달하는

in tax revenue.

세수를 가져오고요.

But this is only a financial angle, right?

하지만 이건 오로지 재무적 관점인 것이죠?

We all know that the arts is way more than just an economic value.

우리 모두는 예술이란 게 경제적 가치 그 이상이란 걸 알고 있어요.

The arts brings meaning to life.

예술은 삶의 의미를 환기시킵니다.

It's the spirit of our culture.

우리 문화의 정수이기도 하고요.

It brings people together and it supports creativity

사람들을 불러모으고 창의성을 촉발하기도 하죠.

and social cohesion.

사회적 화합도 가져와요.

But if the arts contributes this much to our economy,

그러나 예술이 우리 경제에 이처럼 크게 공헌함에도 불구하고

why then do we still invest so little in arts and artists?

왜 예술과 예술가에 대한 투자에는 여전히 인색한 것일까요?

Why do more than 80 percent of our schools nationwide

왜 전국의 일선 학교 중 80% 이상에 대해

still experience budget cuts in arts education programs?

예술 교육 프로그램 예산을 감축할까요?

What is it about the value of arts and artists

왜 예술과 예술가들의 가치에 대해

that we still don't understand?

우리는 여전히 이해하지 못할까요?

I believe the system is flawed and far from being fair,

저는 우리의 시스템이 잘못 됐고 전혀 공정하지 않다고 생각해요.

and I want to help change that.

그리고 전 이걸 바꾸는데 기여하고 싶습니다.

I want to live in a society

제가 살고 싶은 사회는

where artists are more valued

예술가들이 가치를 더욱 인정받고

and have more cultural and financial support

문화적으로나 경제적으로 지원받음으로써

so they can focus on creating arts instead of being forced to drive Ubers

창작 활동에만 전념할 수 있는 것이죠. 우버 운전사로 내몰리거나

or take corporate jobs they'd rather not have.

원하지 않는 생계 활동을 이어갈 필요 없이 말이에요.

There are other sources of income for artists, however.

그런데 예술가들이 수입을 올릴 수 있는 또 다른 방법도 있습니다.

There are private foundations,

민간 재단이나,

grants and patrons who give money,

재정적 지원을 하는 후원자들도 있죠.

except a vast majority of artists don't know about these opportunities.

예술인들의 절대 다수는 이런 기회가 있다는 것도 모르지만요.

On one side you have institutions and people with money.

한 쪽에는 후원 재단과 후원가들이 있고,

On the other side you have artists seeking funding,

다른 한 쪽에는 후원금을 원하는 예술가들이 있습니다.

but the artists don't know about the people with the money,

하지만 예술가들은 후원자의 존재를 모르고,

and the people with the money don't necessarily know

후원자들 역시 누가 후원이 필요한

about the artists out there.

예술가인지 알 수 없는 상황입니다.

This is why I am very excited to share "Grantpa,"

이런 이유로 저는 "그랜드파"를 소개하고자 하는데요.

to match artists with grants and funding opportunities

예술가들과 지원금, 후원금의 기회를 매칭합니다.

in a way that is easy, fast and less intimidating.

Grantpa is only one step towards solving an existing problem

그랜드파는 현존하는 문제점을 풀기 위한 첫 단계일 뿐입니다.

of funding inequality,

기금 운용의 불균형 말이죠.

but we need to work collectively on multiple fronts

하지만 우리는 다양한 측면에서 협업을 통해

to reevaluate how we view the artists in our society.

사회가 예술가를 보는 시각을 재정립해야 합니다.

Do we think of arts as a luxury or a necessity?

예술은 사치일까요? 아니면 필수불가결한 요소일까요?

Do we understand what goes on in the day-to-day life of an artist,

우리는 예술가들의 일상을 제대로 이해하고 있을까요?

or do we still believe that artists, no matter how struggling they are,

아니면 예술가들이 얼마나 궁핍하건 간에

are happy simply because they're following their passion?

그들은 열정을 추구하므로 행복하다고 간주해도 될까요?

In a few years, I plan to send my brothers the following email:

몇 년 뒤에는 제 형제들에게 이런 이메일을 보내고 싶습니다.

"Dear brothers, I hope this message finds you well.

"형제들, 잘 지내고 있길 바래.

I am emailing to let you know that I am doing great

내가 아주 잘 지낸다고 알려주고 싶어.

and so are hundreds of thousands of artists

그리고 수십 만 명의 예술인들 역시

who are being valued more culturally and financially

문화적으로나 경제적으로도 잘 지내고 있지.

and getting enough funding to focus on their crafts

충분한 지원도 받게 되어서 각자의 작품에 몰두하고

and create more art.

창작 활동에도 한창이야.

I appreciate all of your support.

모두들 지원해줘서 너무 감사해.

Couldn't have done it without you."

혼자서는 해내지 못했을 거야."
