And I tell them it's the study of the way in which human beings are shaped

Here, I'll give you an example.

we saw economic despair, deprivation.

This is what I saw.

I saw people struggling to get by,

not knowing what was what and what was next.

कुछ पता नहीं था क्या हो रहा है और क्या होने वाला है

And I asked myself the question:

How is it possible that we could be so poor here in the United States,

because coal is such a wealthy resource; it's so much money?

And I realize:

because the Chinese ingratiated themselves

क्यों के यहाँ पर चीनी ओने सम्बन्ध बना लिया था

with a small ruling class here in the United States,

याहा पार अमेरिका में छोटेसे वर्ग के साथ

who stole all of that money and all of that wealth for themselves.

And the rest of us, the vast majority of us,

struggle to get by.

And the Chinese gave this small ruling elite

loads of military weapons and sophisticated technology

would not speak out against this relationship.

Does this sound familiar?

And they did things like train Americans to help protect the coal.

And everywhere, there were symbols of the Chinese --

और जहा देखा वाहा पार बश चीन के निशान दिखने लगे

everywhere, a constant reminder.

और हर जगह वो हमें ये याद दिलाते रहते

और वहा चाइना में

And back in China,

वो लोग क्या कहते है चाइना में?

what do they say in China?

Nothing! They don't talk about us. They don't talk about the coal.

कुछ नहीं .. वो हमरे बारे में बात नहीं करते , वो कोइले के बारे में बात नहीं करते.

अगर आप उनसे पूछे

If you ask them,

they'll say, "Well, you know, we need the coal.

वे तो यही कहेंगे , अजी आप कोइले के बारेमे तो जानते ही है , हमें कितनी जरूरत है कोइले की .

I mean, come on, I'm not going to turn down my thermostat.

ये तो सरासर हद हो गई , मेरा गोस्सा कम नहीं होने वाला.

और काप को ऐसा लगना भी नहीं चेही ऐ."

You can't expect that."

And so, I get angry, and I get pissed,

क्यों के ये बात पे मुझे बहोत ही अधिक ग़ुस्सा आता है

as do lots of average people.

जेसे बहोत सारे आम आदमी यो कोभी आता है .

और हमने सामने लदत दी , और उशने बहोत ही गन्दा रूप धारण किया

And we fight back, and it gets really ugly.

And the Chinese respond in a very ugly way.

और चीन ने उसका बहोत ही गन्दा जावाब दिया

And before we know it, they send in the tanks

और उष शे पहेलेकी हमें पता चले , उन्होंने टोपे भेजदी

and they send in the troops.

और फिर सेना भेज दी

And lots of people are dying.

And it's a very, very difficult situation.

Can you imagine what you would feel

Can you imagine walking out of this building

and seeing a tank sitting out there,

or a truck full of soldiers?

और जरा महसूस की जिए के आपको केसा लगेगा

Just imagine what you would feel, because you know why they're here;

क्यों की आपको पता हे के वो यहा पे क्यों है ? और आपको येभी पता है के वो यहा क्या कर राहे है .

you know what they're doing here.

और आपको बहोत गूस भी आता है और आपको डरा भी लगता है

And you just feel the anger and you feel the fear.

If you can, that's empathy. That's empathy.

अगर आप ये महसूस कर सकते है तो , वो सहानुभूति - ये सहानुभूति है

You've left your shoes, and you've stood in mine.

आपने अपनी जगा छोड़ी और मेरी नजार से देखा ,

आपको बस ये महेसुस करना होगा

And you've got to feel that.

ठीक है,तो ये थी शुरूवाद

OK, so that's the warm-up.

That's the warm-up.

Now we're going to have the real radical experiment.

So, for the remainder of my talk, what I want you to do

Sometimes you even watch satellite, CNN, from the United States.

अमेरिका से सीएनएन भी देखते है

You have a sense of what the Americans are thinking.

तो आपको ये पता है के अमरीकी लोग केसा सोचते है आपके बारे मई

मगर सही मई , आपतो अपने लिए सिर्फ एक अछि ज़िन्दगी चाहते है

But really, you just want a better life for yourself.

आप यही तो चाहते हो

That's what you want.

You're Arab Muslim living in Iraq.

आप इराक में आरहे रहे इस अरब मुस्लिम हो .

आप अपने लिए अच्छी ज़िन्दगी चाहते हो

You want a better life for yourself.

तो यहाँ , मैं आपकी मदद करता हु

So here, let me help you.

Let me help you with some things that you might be thinking.

मैं आपको सोचने मई मदद करता हु

जो शायद आप सोच रहे हो.

Number one:

सबसे पहेले तो :अपने देश में ये आक्रमण

this incursion into your land these past 20 years and before --

ये पिछले बिष साल , और उसके पहलेभी

the reason anyone is interested in your land,

क्या कारण है के कोईभी आपके देश में इतनी दिलचश्पी क्यों ले , और खास करके अम्रीका ही क्यों ?

and particularly the United States, is oil.

तेल(आयल)

It's all about oil; you know that, everybody knows that.

ईश तेल(आयल) की वजह से;

People back in the United States know it's about oil.

आप ये जानते है ,साब लोग ते जानते है

It's because somebody else has a design for your resource.

क्यों के आपके साधनों केलिए किसी ओरके पास योजना थी

किसी ओरके पास योजना थी

It's your resource -- it's not somebody else's.

मगर ये आपके साधन थे ,किसी ओरके नहीं !!

It's your land; it's your resource.

ये आपकी जमीं है , आपके साधन है

Somebody else has a design for it.

मगर ये किसी ओरकी योजना थी

और आप जान ते है उन्होंने ये योजना क्यों बनायीं?

And you know why they have a design?

You know why they have their eyes set on it?

आप जानते है उनकी नजार किश चीज़ पे थी !

उनकी पूरी आर्थिक व्यवस्था जोकि

Because they have an entire economic system

पूरी तरहसे ईश तेल पे ताकि हुई थी

that's dependent on that oil -- foreign oil,

परदेशी तेल पे

oil from other parts of the world that they don't own.

तेल जोकि दुनियाके अलग देशो से आता ,जो उनका नहीं था

And what else do you think about these people?

और क्या सोचते है आप इन लोगोके बारे मई

अमेरिकेन लोग , बहोत ही पैसे वाले है.

The Americans, they're rich.

Come on, they live in big houses, they have big cars.

क्या बात करते हो , वो बड़े बंगलोमें रहते हे , बड़ी गाडी मे गुमते है

क्या बात करते हो , उनके पास बड़े बंगले है बड़ी गाडिया है

They all have blond hair, blue eyes. They're happy.

आप ये सोच तै है , मगर ये सच नहीं है

You think that. It's not true, of course, but that's the media impression.

मगर ये मीडिया की छाप थी ,और आपको यही साच लागता

And that's what you get.

उनके पास बड़े सहर है

And they have big cities,

and the cities are all dependent on oil.

सहर जो आयल पे चल ते है

And back home, what do you see?

और यहाँ आप के घर में आप क्या देखते है

Poverty, despair, struggle.

गरीबी, निराशा, संघर्ष

देखो , आप नहीं जी रहे हो एक आमिर देश में

Look, you don't live in a wealthy country.

I mean -- this is Iraq.

यह इराक है

This is what you see.

आपको यहाँ येही दिखाई देगा

You see people struggling to get by.

आप लोगो को संगर्ष करते देखते है .

मेरा मतलब है, के ये आसान नहीं है;यहाँ बहुत ही गरीबी है

It's not easy; you see a lot of poverty.

और आओ इसके बारे में कुछ महेसुस करते हो .

And you feel something about this.

These people have designs for your resource,

इन लोगो के पास आपके साधनों केलिए योजना है

और परिणाम रूप आप ये देखते है

and this is what you see?

अमेरिकेन इश बारे मई बात नहीं करते , मागर आप करते है

Something else you see that you talk about --

अमेरिकेन इश बारे मई बात नहीं करते , मागर आप करते है

Americans don't talk about this, but you do --

वहाँ ये बात है, दुनिया का सैन्यीकरण

there's this thing, this militarization of the world,

और यह ठीक अमेरिका में केंद्रित है.

and it's centered right in the United States.

और अमेरिका

And the United States is responsible

दुनियुआ भरके आधे से ज्यादा सैन्य खर्च केलिए जिम्मेदार है

for almost one half of the world's military spending.

सैन्य खर्च केलिए जिम्मेदार है

और उनकी आबादीसिर्फ दुनियाकी चार ताका ही है

Four percent of the world's population!

और आप ये महेसुस करते है ,आप हर रोज ये देखते है

And you feel it; you see it every day.

ये आपकी जिंदगी का हिस्सा बन गई है

It's part of your life.

And you talk about it with your friends.

और आप इसके बारे मई आपके दोषतो से बात करते है

आप पढ़ते है इस बारे मे

You read about it.

And back when Saddam Hussein was in power,

और जब सद्दाम हुसैन सत्ता में था,

the Americans didn't care about his crimes.

अमेरिकियों को उसके अपराधों के बारे में परवाह नहीं थी .

When he was gassing the Kurds and gassing Iran,

जाब वो कुर्दों और इरान जला रहा था

उन्हें इश बात की पर्व नहीं थी

they didn't care about it.

When oil was at stake,

जाब बात तेल की आई

somehow, suddenly, things mattered.

केसे करके , अचानक ये बातो पे वे गौर करने लगे

And what you see, something else:

और आप क्या देखते हो ,कुछ अलग ही

अमेरिका

the United States,

the hub of democracy around the world --

दुनिउया का लोकशाही केंद्र

हाकीकतमे लगता नहीं के वो

they don't seem to really be supporting democratic countries

दुनिया भरमे सभी लोकशाही देशो की मदद कर रहा हे

all around the world.

There are a lot of countries, oil-producing countries,

दुनिया में बहोत सरे देश हे ,तेल उत्पादन करते देश है

that aren't very democratic, but supported by the United States.

जोकि लोकशाही नहीं है , मगर फिरभी अमेरिका उनको मदद करता है

येतो बहोत ही अजीब है

That's odd.

Oh -- these incursions, these two wars,

ओह ये घुसपैठ ये दो युद्ध

the 10 years of sanctions,

ये १० सलोका प्रतिबन्ध

the eight years of occupation,

ये ८ स्लो का कब्ज़ा

the insurgency that's been unleashed on your people,

ये आपके खिलाफ किया हुआ विद्रोह

हजारो लाखो

the tens of thousands, the hundreds of thousands

of civilian deaths?

लोगोकी हत्या

साब इस तेल की वजहसे

All because of oil.

You can't help but think that.

आप ये सोचे बिना रहे नहीं साकते

You talk about it.

आप इसके बारे मई बात करते है

It's in the forefront of your mind, always.

ये हमेसा आपके दिमाग मई रहता है

You say, "How is that possible?"

आप सोचते है " ये के से मुमकिन है "

And this man, he's everyman --

ये इंसान, इस के सारे आदमी

your grandfather, your uncle,

आपके दादा , आपके चाचा

आपके पिता ,आपका बेटा

your father, your son, your neighbor,

आपके पडोशी ,आपके अध्यपाक , आपका छात्र

your professor, your student.

Once a life of happiness and joy

कभी जो जिंदगी खुशि और सुख से भारिथि

and suddenly, pain and sorrow.

आचानक उसमे दुःख और आसू

आपके देश के सभी लोग

Everyone in your country has been touched by the violence,

हिंसा,

खून, दर्द,

the bloodshed, the pain, the horror -- everybody.

आतंक के शिकार थे

Not a single person in your country has not been touched.

आपके देश में कोई ऐसा नहीं था जो इस से अछुता रहे गया हो

जो इस से अछुता रहे गया हो.

मागर कुछ था ,

But there's something else.

There's something else about these people, these Americans who are there.

इन लोगो के बारे मई कुछ था

ये अमेरिकेन जो यहाँ पर थे

There's something else about them that you see

कुछ अलग था इन लोगो के बारे में जो आप देख साक ते थे ,मागर वो नहीं

that they don't see themselves.

और आप क्या देखा साकते थे , व ईसाई थे

And what do you see? They're Christians!

They're Christians.

व ईसाई थे(च्रिस्तियन )

They worship the Christian God, they have crosses, they carry Bibles.

वे ईसाई भगवान् को पूजते थे ,उनके पास क्रोस थे , वो बाइबल लेके गूम ते थे

Their Bibles have a little insignia

उनकी बाइबल पे एक सिक्का था

जिश पे लिखा था " अमरीकी सेना"

that says "US Army" on them.

And their leaders, their leaders:

और उनके नेता,उनके लीडर

before they send their sons and daughters off to war in your country --

उसके पहेले की वो आपने बेटे बेटियों को भेजे

आपके देशमे लड़ने केलिए

आप जानते थे इस का कारन

and you know the reason --

before they send them off,

उसके पहेले के वो उन्हें यहाँ भेजे

they go to a Christian church, and they pray to their Christian God,

वो उनके ईसाई चर्च में जाते और उनके ईसाई भगवानको पूजते

और वो अपने लिए सुरक्षा और मार्गदर्शन मागते

and they ask for protection and guidance from that god.

क्यों ?

Why?

Well, obviously, when people die in the war,

ये तो ज़ाहिर था के,जाब लड़ाई में लोग मारे गे ,

they are Muslims, they are Iraqis -- they're not Americans.

वो तो मुस्लिम और इराकी होगे

वो अमेरिकेन नहीं होगे

आप नहीं चाहते के अमेरिकेन मरे , आप अपनी टुकड़ी की खेरियात चाहते हो

You don't want Americans to die -- "Protect Our Troops."

और आप कुछ महेसुस करते हो इस बारे में --

And you feel something about that --

ज़रूर करते हो .

of course you do.

And they do wonderful things.

और वो वहापे बहोत ही बढ़िया चीजे करते है .

You read about it, you hear about it.

और आप उसके बारे में पढ़ते है, सुनते है

They're there to build schools and help people.

वो वहा पार स्कूल बनाते है , लोगोकी मदद कर ते है, और यही तो वे करते है

That's what they want to do.

वो बहोत ही अच्छा काम करते है , माग्र वो बुरा काम भी कारते है

They do wonderful things, but they also do the bad things,

और आप इस का भेद नहीं परख सकते

and you can't tell the difference.

और ये आदमी , लियूतेनंत जेनरल विलियम बोय्की जे सा आदमी मिलता है आप को

And this guy, you get a guy like Lt. Gen. William Boykin.

में ये कहेना चाहता हु के, या हा एक आदमी है जो कहेता है आपका का भगवान् गालात है

Here's a guy who says that your god is a false god.

Your god's an idol; his god is the true god.

आप का भगवान् गलात है , इसका भगवान् सही है

The solution to the problem in the Middle East, according to him,

उश्के हिसाब से , मिद्दल ईस्ट के सारी मुसीबतो का हाल येहे ,

के सारे मुस्लीमो को इशाई बाना दो

is to convert you all to Christianity --

तुम्हारे धर्मं को मिटा दो

just get rid of your religion.

And you know that. Americans don't read about this guy.

और आप को पता है ! अमेरिकेन इस आदमीके बारे मई नहीं पढ़ते

वो इश के बारेमें कुछ नहीं जानते , मागर आप जानते हो .

They don't know anything about him, but you do.

You pass it around. You pass his words around.

आप ये बात फेलाते हो , आपने आसपास फेलाते हो

में कहेता हु ये बहोत ही गंभीर मामला है

I mean, this is serious. You're afraid.

He was one of the leading commanders in the second invasion of Iraq.

इराक पर दुशरे हामलेमें ये मुख्या कमांडर था

तो आप ये सोचा ते हो के , " ओ भगवन , अगर ये आदमी ऐसा सोचता है

And you're thinking, "My God, if this guy is saying that,

then all the soldiers must be saying that."

तो सारे सेंनिक ऐसा सोचते होगे ".

और ये शब्द ,

And this word here --

George Bush called this war a crusade.

जोर्ज बुश ने इश लड़ाई को धर्म की लड़ाई बताई

Man, the Americans, they're just like, "Ah, crusade.

यार, अमेरिकन , वे तो बस, जैसे ये ", धर्मयुद्ध.

जो भी हो. मुझे नहीं मालूम.

Whatever. I don't know what that means."

आप जानते हैं इसका क्या मतलब है .

You know what it means -- it's a holy war against Muslims.

यह मुसलमानों के खिलाफ एक पवित्र युद्ध है

Look, invade, subdue them, take their resources.

देखो, आक्रमण, उनके वश में है, अपने संसाधन ले लो.

अगर वे नहीं मान ते तो , मार डालो उन्हें

If they won't submit, kill them.

That's what this is about.

And you're thinking, "My God, these Christians are coming to kill us."

ये तो बहोतही भयानक है

This is frightening.

You feel frightened. Of course you feel frightened.

आप डरे हु ऐ है , सचमे डरे हुए है

And this man, Terry Jones:

और ये आदमी तेर्री जोंनस :

I mean here's a guy who wants to burn Qurans, right?

ये आदमी है जो की कुरान जलना चाहता है

और अमेरिकेन, " ओह , येतो एक सरफिरा आदमी है "

And the Americans: "Ah, he's a knucklehead.

ये एक होटल मेनेजर रहे चूका है

He's a former hotel manager; he's got three dozen members of his church ..."

उशके साथ उशकी चर्च के ३ दाजन लोग है

वो उसपे हस्ते है, मगर आप उसको मजाक में नहीं लेते

They laugh him off.

You don't laugh him off, because in the context of everything else,

क्योंकि बाकी सब के संदर्भ में,

सारी कडिय बांध बेठ ती है

all the pieces fit.

मेरा निश्चित रूपसे ये मतलब है , की अमेरिकेन उसे ऐसे ही समजते है

Of course this is how Americans think.

इश हिसाब से सारे मिडल इस्तके के लोग , नाकि सिर्र्फ तुम्हारे देश के लोग

So people all over the Middle East, not just in your country,

इस का विद्रोह कर रहे है

are protesting.

"वो कुरान जलना चाहते है , हमारा धर्मं पुस्तक "

"He wants to burn Qurans, our holy book.

ये इसाई , कोन हैं ये इसाई?

These Christians -- who are these Christians?

वे बहोत ही बुरे है, और बहोत मतलबी भी

They're so evil, they're so mean -- this is what they're about?"

यही है उनकी पाहेचान है"

This is what you're thinking as an Arab Muslim,

येही सोचते है आप एक आरब मुस्लिम हो ने के नाते ,

इराकी होने के नाते .

as an Iraqi.

Of course you're going to think this.

इस में दो मात नहीं के आप ऐसा सोचेगे .

And then your cousin says, "Hey coz, check out this website.

और फिर आपका भाई

कहे गा " भाई ये देखो ये वेब साईट "

You've got to see this -- Bible Boot Camp.

तुहे ये देखना चाही ये " बाइबल का अखाडा "

ये इसाई सारे पागल है.

These Christians are nuts!

They're training their little kids to be soldiers for Jesus.

ये उनके छोटे छोटे बच्चो को इशु के धर्म शेनिक बना रहे है

They take little kids and run them through these things

और ये उन छोटे बच्चोको लेजाते है , और उनसे येसाब करवाते है .

till they teach them how to say, 'Sir! Yes, sir!'

जब टाक वे उन्हें सिखाना दे " सर, येश, सर "

और ऐसि चीजे, के बंम केसे फेका जाता है, और हथियारों के देखभाल केसे करते है

Can you feel their anger,

What do you think they're feeling?

You see, that's empathy.

देखि ये , ये हे सहानुभूति .

It's also understanding.

"OK, Sam, so why do you do this sort of thing?

when it comes to understanding why that person's driving 40 miles per hour

in the passing lane;

or your teenage son;

or your neighbor who annoys you by cutting his lawn on Sunday mornings.

Whatever it is, you can go so far.

कोई भी चीज हो , आप वो महेसुस कर सको गे .

And this is what I tell my students:

step outside of your tiny, little world.

आप आपनी छोटी दुनियासे बहार देखे

Step inside of the tiny, little world of somebody else.

आप किशी की छोटी सी

दुनिया में देखे

और फिरसे करिए फिरसे करिए फिरसे करिए .

And then do it again

and do it again and do it again.

And suddenly, all these tiny, little worlds,

और अचानक ये छोटी छोटी दुनिया ,

they come together in this complex web.

एक उलज़े हुऐसे जाल में बदल जाए गी .

And they build a big, complex world.

और उन्हों ने बहोत ही बड़ी और अटपटी दुनिया बनाली

And suddenly, without realizing it,

और अचनाक आपको पता भी नहीं चला

आप दुनिया को आलग नजरिये से देख रहे हो

you're seeing the world differently.

Everything has changed.

सब कुछ बदल गया है.

Everything in your life has changed.

Attend to other lives,

I'm not saying that I support the terrorists in Iraq.

But as a sociologist, what I am saying is:
