I see you're all up on the history of hurdy-gurdy --

And in Spanish, "zanfona."

And in Italian, "ghironda," okay?

Hurdy-gurdy, or wheel fiddle.

سێ جۆری جیاوازی تەل هەیە.

So, these are the different kinds and shapes of the hurdy-gurdy.

جۆری یەکەمیان تەلی مشەخۆرە،

The hurdy-gurdy is the only musical instrument

کە دەنگێکی هاوشێوەی زوڕنا دەردەکات.

that uses a crank to turn a wheel

to rub strings, like the bow of a violin,

جۆری دووەمیان تەلی ئاوازە،

کە لە ڕێگەی تەختەکلیلێکی دارەوە کاردەکات هاوشێوەی پیانۆ.

to produce music.

It has three different kinds of strings.

The first string is the drone string,

which plays a continuous sound like the bagpipe.

جۆری سێیەمیان زۆر داهێنەرانەیە.

و تاکە ئامێریشە

کە ئەم جۆرە تەکنیکە بەکاردەهێنێت.

The second string is a melody string,

which is played with a wooden keyboard tuned like a piano.

ئەو بەشەی کە پێی دەگوترێ گیزەگیزی پرد، یاخود سەگەکە بەکاردەخات.

کاتێک دەسکەکە دەسووڕێنم و پەستانی دەخەمەسەر،

And the third string is pretty innovative.

دەنگێکی هاوشێوەی وەڕەی سەگ دەردەکات.

It's also the only instrument

that uses this kind of technique.

بۆیە هەموو ئەمانە زۆر داهێنەرانەیە،

It activates what's called the buzzing bridge, or the dog.

ئەگەر سەرنج بدەن

ئەوا هێردی گوردی هەزاران ساڵ لەمەوبەر هەبووە

When I turn the crank and I apply pressure,

و پێویستی بە دوو کەس بووە بۆ ژەنینی؛

یەکێکیان بۆ سووڕاندنی دەسکەکە،

یەکی تریش... بەڵێ بۆ ژەنینی ئاوازەکە

it makes a sound like a barking dog.

بە ڕاکێشانی پوازێکی داری.

So all of this is pretty innovative,

خۆشبەختانە، چەند سەدەیەک دواتر ئەمانە گۆڕدران.

if you consider

بۆیە، تەنها کەسێک دەتوانێت بیژەنێت

that the hurdy-gurdy appeared about a thousand years ago

و بەنزیکەی... هەڵگرتنی هێردی گوردی زۆر قوڕسە.

and it took two people to play it;

one to turn the crank,

and another person -- yes -- to play the melody

ئامێری هێردی گوردی، بە تێپەڕبوونی کات بەکارهاتووە

by physically pulling up large wooden pegs.

لە زۆربەی مۆسیقا سەماییەکان

بەهۆی بێهاوتایی ئاوازەکەی

Luckily, all of this changed a couple of centuries later.

لەگەڵ کارپێکەری مۆسیقاوە.

So, one person could actually play

and almost -- this is pretty heavy --

و ئەمڕۆ، ئامێری هێردی گوردی لە هەموو جۆرەکانی مۆسیقا بەکارهاتووە

carry the hurdy-gurdy.

لە مۆسیقای فۆلکلۆری میللی،

The hurdy-gurdy has been used, historically, through the centuries

سەما، هاوچەرخ

و جیهانی مۆسیقا

in mostly dance music

because of the uniqueness of the melody

لە وڵاتی بەریتانیا، فەڕەنسا، ئیسپانیا

و ئیتاڵیا بەکاردێت.

combined with the acoustic boombox here.

And today, the hurdy-gurdy is used in all sorts of music --

لەلایەن پسپۆڕی تەل’ـەوە دروست دەکرێت،

traditional folk music,

و لە ئەوڕوپاش.

dance, contemporary

و زۆر قوڕسە بۆ ژەنین.

and world music --

in the U.K., in France, in Spain

بۆیە با درێژی نەکەمەوە، حەز دەکەن بیبیستن؟

and in Italy.

بەڵێ

And this kind of hurdy-gurdy takes anywhere from three to five years [to order and receive it].

- گوێم لێنەبوو. حەز دەکەن بیبیستن؟ - بەڵێ

It's made by specialized luthiers,

ئەوەتا

also in Europe.

حەز دەکەم بە زمانی باسکی گۆرانی بڵێم،

And it's very difficult to tune.

کە زمانی باسکییەکانە لەو وڵاتەی لێی دەژیم،

So without further ado, would you like to hear it?
