Tell your daughters of this year,

بۆ ئەمساڵ بە کچەکانت بڵێ ،

how we woke needing coffee

چۆن بەخەبەرھاتین پێویستمان بە قاوەیە

but discovered instead cadavers strewn about our morning papers,

لاشەی مردویان دۆزیەوە لە جیاتی پارە لە لاپەرە بڵاوکراوەکانی بەیانیان،

waterlogged facsimiles of our sisters, spouses, small children.

ڕویەکی جوانی خوشک و ھاوسەر و منداڵە بچوکەکانمان.

Say to your baby of this year when she asks, as she certainly should,

Admit even in the year we leased freedom, we didn't own it outright.

There were still laws for every way we used our privates

ھێشتا یاسا ھەبوو بۆ ھەموو ڕێگەیەک

while they pawed at the soft folds of us,

کاتێک بە نەرم و نیانی مامەڵەیان لە گەڵمان ئەکرد،

grabbed with no concern for consent,

ھیچ بەرژەوەندیەکی ئێمەی نەبوو،

no laws made for the men that enforced them.

یاسایەک بۆ پیاوەکان نەبوو کە ناچاریان دەکات .

We were trained to dodge,

ڕاھاتبون بۆ ئەوەی لە کار بدۆڕێن ،

to wait, to cower and cover,

بترسن و دایپۆشن ، تا زیاتر چاوەڕێ بکەن،

to wait more, still, wait.

ھێشتا چاوەڕێ بکە ، تا زیاتر چاوەڕێ بکەین،

We were told to be silent.

پێمان وترا کە بێ دەنگ بین .

But speak to your girls of this wartime,

بەڵام لەم جەنگەدا قسە لە گەڵ کچەکانت بکە ،

a year preceded by a score of the same,

ساڵێک پێش ھەمان خاڵ،

caught gold in hijab, collected death threats,

زێڕی لە حیجاب گرت هەڕەشەی مردنیان کۆکردەوە

knew ourselves as patriots,

وەک نیشتیمانپەروەرێک ،

said, "We're 35 now, time we settled down and found a running mate,"

وتی"ئێمە ئێستا 35 کەین، کاتمان جێگیر بوو هاوڕێیەکی ڕاکردنم دۆزیەوە.

made road maps for infant joy, shamed nothing but fear,

نەخشەکانی ڕێگامان دروست کرد بۆ خۆشی ساوا تەنها ترس و بیم نەبێت،

This year, we were women,

not an off-brand gender,

نەک ڕەگەزێکی دوور لە براند،

not a concession, but women.

نەک دەستلێبەرداربوون، بەڵکو ژن.

Instruct your babies.

ڕێنمایی منداڵەکانت بکە.

Remind them that the year has passed to be docile or small.

به بیربه یه وه به ریده که ن که ساڵ بەسەرچوو بە دۆکیڵ یان بچووک بیت

Some of us said for the first time that we were women,

هه ندێکمان بۆ یه که م جار وتیان کە ئێمە ئافرەت بووین,

took this oath of solidarity seriously.

ئەم سوێندەی هاوکاری بە جدی خوارد.

Some of us bore children and some of us did not,

هەندێک لە ئێمە منداڵی بۆر وە هەندێکمان نەیکرد,

and none of us questioned whether that made us real

ھیچ کامان پرسیارمان لێ نەکرد ئایا ئێمەی دروستکردوە

or appropriate or true.

یان گونجاو یان ڕاست.

When she asks you of this year,

کاتێک ئەم ساڵ پرسیارت لێ دەکات

your daughter, whether your offspring or heir to your triumph,

کچەکەت، ئەگەر نەوەکەت یان میراتگری سەرکەوتنت،

from her comforted side of history teetering towards woman,

لە لایەنە ئاسودەکەی مێژوو بە ژنەوە،

she will wonder and ask voraciously,

ئەو زۆر بە بەدکار و بەدناو دەبێت و پرسیار دەکات.

though she cannot fathom your sacrifice,

What did you do for women in the year it was time?

چیتان بۆ ژنان کرد لە ساڵدا کاتی ئەوە بوو؟

This path you made for me, which bones had to break?

ئەم ڕێگایەی کە بۆ منت دروست کرد کام ئێسکی ئەبوو بشکێت؟

Did you do enough, and are you OK, momma?

ئایا تۆ تەواوت کرد و تۆ باشیت دایە؟

And are you a hero?"

ئایا تۆ پاڵەوانیت؟!

She will ask the difficult questions.

ئەو پرسیارە قورسەکان دەکات

She will not care about the arc of your brow,

ئەو گرنگی پێنادات لەبارەی کەوانەی برۆکەتەوە,

the weight of your clutch.

کێشی کلاجەکەت

She will not ask of your mentions.

ئەو لە باسەکانت ناپرسێ.

Your daughter, for whom you have already carried so much, wants to know

what you brought, what gift, what light did you keep from extinction?

did you sleep through it or were you roused?

What was the cost of staying woke?

نرخی مانەوە لە خەو دا چی بوو؟

What, in the year we said time's up, what did you do with your privilege?

چی، لەو ساڵەدا کە وتمان کات تەواو بوو چیت کرد لەگەڵ مافی خۆت؟

Did you sup on others' squalor?

ئایا تۆ لە پیسی ئەوانی تر دایت؟

Did you look away or directly into the flame?

ئایا سەیری دورتکرد یان ڕاستەوخۆ بۆ ناو گڕەکە؟

Did you know your skill or treat it like a liability?

ئایا زانیت شارەزاین یان وەک بەرپرسیارەتی مامەڵە دەکات؟

Were you fooled by the epithets of "nasty" or "less than"?

ئایا تۆ لە لایەن پەتاکان گێل بووی لە "پیس" یان کەمتر لە؟

Did you teach with an open heart or a clenched fist?

Tell her the truth, how you lived in spite of crooked odds.

ڕاستی پێ بڵێ، چۆن ژیایت سەرەڕای ئەوەی کە زۆر بە دڕاک

Tell her you were brave,

پێی بڵێ تۆ ئازای

and always, always in the company of courage,

هەمیشە، هەمیشە لە کۆمپانیای ئازای،

mostly the days when you just had yourself.

زۆربەی ڕۆژەکان کاتێک کە تۆ خۆتت هەبوو

Tell her she was born as you were,

پێی بڵێ کە ئەو لە دایک بووە وەک تۆ،

as your mothers before, and the sisters beside them,

وەک دایکت وە خوشکەکانی تەنیشتیان

in the age of legends, like always.

لە سەردەمی ئەفسانەکان، وەک هەمیشە

Tell her she was born just in time,

پێی بڵێ کە لە دایک بووە لە کاتی خۆیدا

just in time

لە کاتی خۆیدا

to lead.
