Hi, everyone. I'm Sirena.

سڵاو، من سیرینیام.

I'm 11 years old and from Connecticut.

Well, I'm not really sure why I'm here.

لە ڕاستیدا نازنم هۆکاری ئامادەبوونم لێرە چییە.

I mean, what does this have to do with technology, entertainment and design?

ئەمە چ کاری بە تەکنەلۆژیاوە هەیە، بەسەر بردنی کاتێکی خۆش یان دیزاین؟

Well, I count my iPod, cellphone and computer as technology,

ئای پۆدەکەم گرنگە، تەلەفۆن، کۆمپیتەر ئەمانە تەکنەلۆژیان،

but this has nothing to do with that.

ئەمە هیچ بە تەکنەلۆژیاوە پەیوەست نییە.

So I did a little research on it.

بەدوای زانیاری گەڕام.

Well, this is what I found.

گەیشتمە ئەم ئەنجامە.

Of course, I hope I can memorize it.

هەوڵمدا لە بەری بکەم.

(Clears throat)

The violin is made of a wood box and four metal strings.

کەمانچە لە بۆکسێکی دار و چوار وەتەر دروست دەکرێت.

By pulling a string, it vibrates and produces a sound wave,

بە پاڵپێوەنانی وەتەرەکان دەلەرێنەوە ودەنگ بەرهەم دەهێنن،

which passes through a piece of wood called a bridge,

بە ناو پارچە تەختەیەک تێپەڕ دەبن کە پێیان دەوترێت پرد.

and goes down to the wood box and gets amplified, but ... let me think.

دواتر دەنگەکە گەورە دەبێت، بەڵام با بیر بکەمەوە ....

Placing your finger at different places on the fingerboard

جێگەی دانانی پەنجە لەسەر وەتەرە جیاوازەکان

changes the string length, and that changes the frequency of the sound wave.

درێژی وەتەرەکان دڕیژ دەکات و لەرینەوەی جیاواز دروست دەبێت.

(Sighs) Oh, my gosh!

ئای خوایە!

(Laughter)

OK, this is sort of technology,

ئەمە جۆرێکە لە مۆسیقا،

but I can call it a 16th-century technology.

بەڵام تەکنەلۆژیایی سەدی ١٦یە.

But actually, the most fascinating thing that I found

بەڵام سەرسوڕهێنەرترین شت

was that even the audio system or wave transmission nowadays

ئامێرەکانی سیستەمی دەنگی یان ئامێرە لاسیکیەکان

are still based on the same principle of producing and projecting sound.

تا ئێستاش لەسەر هەمان بنچینە کار دەکەن.

Isn't that cool?

Design -- I love its design.

دیزاین، دیزاینم خۆش دەوێت.

I remember when I was little, my mom asked me,

بیرمە کاتێک مناڵ بووم، دایکم لێی پرسیم،

"Would you like to play the violin or the piano?"

حەزت لە ژەنینی کەمانچەیە یان پیانۆ؟

I looked at that giant monster and said to myself --

سەیرێکی ئامێری پیانۆم کرد ووتم:

"I am not going to lock myself on that bench the whole day!"

نامەوێت ئەسیری دانیشتنی سەر ئەم ئامێرە بم.

(Laughter)

This is small and lightweight.

ئەمە بچووک و کێشی سوکە.

I can play from standing, sitting or walking.

چۆنم بوێت دەتوانم بیژەنم.

And, you know what?

و شتێکتان پێ بڵیم؟

The best of all is that if I don't want to practice,

ئەگەر بمەوێت خۆم لە ڕاهێنان بدزمەوە،

(Whispering) I can hide it.

بە دەنگی نزم: دەتوانم بیشارمەوە.

(Laughter)

The violin is very beautiful.

کەمانچە زۆر جوانە.

Some people relate it as the shape of a lady.

خەڵکانێک بە جەستەی خانمان دەیشوبهێنن.

But whether you like it or not, it's been so for more than 400 years,

بەڵام پێت خۆش بێت یان نا، تەمەنی ٤٠٠ ساڵە،

unlike modern stuff [that] easily looks dated.

وەک ئامێرە سەردەمییەکان نییە کە زوو کۆن دەبن.

But I think it's very personal and unique that,

پێم وایە ئەمە هەستێکی کەسییە و بێ هاوتایە کە

although each violin looks pretty similar,

گشت کەمانچەکان بەنزیکەی هاوشێوەن،

no two violins sound the same --

دوو کەمانچەیەک هیچ کاتێک هەمان دەنگ بەرهەم ناهێنن--

even from the same maker or based on the same model.

تەنانەت ئەگەر لە لایەن یەک کەس و مۆدیلیش دروست کرابن.

Entertainment -- I love the entertainment.

کەیف و سەفا-- من حەزم لە کەیف و سەفایە.

But actually, the instrument itself isn't very entertaining.

بەڵام لە ڕاستییدا کەمانچە بۆ ئەم بۆنانە بە کەڵک نایەت.

I mean, when I first got my violin and tried to play around on it,

کە یەک کەمانچەم بەدەست هێنا هەوڵمدا هەر بۆخشی بیژەنم،

it was actually really bad,

بیرۆکەیەکی زۆر خراپ بوو،

because it didn't sound the way I'd heard from other kids --

چونکە دەنگەکانی هاوشێوەی ئەم دەنگانە نەبوو کە لە ئامێری مناڵەکانیتر دەمبیستن--

it was so horrible and so scratchy.

پڕ ژاوەژاو و نەشازی بوو.

So, it wasn't entertaining at all.

بەهیچ جۆرێک کەیف و خۆشی نەبوو.

But besides, my brother found this very funny:

برایەکەم ئەمەی زۆر بە دڵ بوو:

Yuk! Yuk! Yuk!

یک! یک! یک!

(Laughter)

A few years later, I heard a joke

دوای چەند ساڵیک، گوێبیستی نوکتەیەک

about the greatest violinist, Jascha Heifetz.

سەبارەت بە گەورەترین کەمانچەژەن جاشا هایفتز بووم.

After Mr. Heifetz's concert,

دوای کۆنسێرتەکەی بەڕێز هایفتز،

a lady came over and complimented him:

خاتوونێک دێتە پێش و دەست خۆشی لێ دەکات و دەڵێت:

"Oh, Mr. Heifetz, your violin sounded so great tonight!"

"بەڕێز هایفتز ئەمشەو کەمانچەکات زۆر شاز دیار بوو!"

And Mr. Heifetz was a very cool person,

بەڕێز هایفتز کەسێکی زۆر بەڕێز بوو،

so he picked up his violin and said,

دەستی دایە کەمانچەکە و ووتی:

"Funny -- I don't hear anything."

"پێکەنیناوییە من هیچ نابیستم."

(Laughter)

Now I realize that as the musician,

ئێستا تێگەیشتم وەک مۆسیقاژەنێک،

we human beings, with our great mind, artistic heart and skill,

ئێمەی مرۆڤ، بەم مێشکە گەورەیە و دڵ و لێهاتوویە گەورەیەمان،

can change this 16th-century technology and a legendary design

دەتوانین دیزاینی ئەم تەکنەلۆژیایەی سەدەی ١٦ بگۆڕین

to a wonderful entertainment.

بۆ کەیف و سەفایەکی خۆش.

Now I know why I'm here.

ئێستا تێگەیشتم بۆچی لێرەم.

At first, I thought I was just going to be here to perform,

لە سەرەتا وامزانی تەنها بۆ ژەنینی مۆسیقا لێرەم،

but unexpectedly, I learned and enjoyed much more.

بەڵام بە پێچەوانەوی چاوەڕوانی خۆم کاتێکی زۆر خۆشم بەڕی کرد و زۆر شت فێر بووم.

But ... although some of the talks were quite up there for me.

بەڵام... سەڕەرای ئەوەی بابەتی هەندێ لە قسەکان بۆ من قورس بوو.

(Laughter)

Like the multi-dimension stuff.

وەک شتی هەمەڕەهەندی.

I mean, honestly, I'd be happy enough

بەڕاستیمە، دلخۆش دەبم گەر

if I could actually get my two dimensions correct in school.

بتوانم ئیشە دوو ڕەهەندییەکانی خوێندنگەم بە باشی ئەنجام بدەم.

(Laughter)

But actually, the most impressive thing to me is that --

ئەوەی زۆرترین سەرنجی منی بۆ خۆی ڕاکێشا --

well, actually, I would also like to say this for all children

کە پێم وایە بۆ زۆربەی مناڵانیتریش ڕاست بێت

is to say thank you to all adults, for actually caring for us a lot,

ئەوەیە سوپاسی ئێوەی گەورەکان بکەم، کە چاودێری ئێمەی مناڵان دەکەن،

and to make our future world much better.

و ئیش دەکەن تا داهاتوومان باشتر بکەن.
