Hi, everyone. I'm Sirena.

สวัสดีค่ะทุกๆท่าน หนู เซเรน่า ค่ะ

I'm 11 years old and from Connecticut.

หนูอายุ 11 ขวบ มาจากรัฐคอนเน็คติกัตค่ะ

(Audience cheers)

Well, I'm not really sure why I'm here.

เออ...หนูก็ยังงงๆอยู่ว่าหนูมาทำอะไรที่นี้

(Laughter)

(เสียงหัวเราะ)

I mean, what does this have to do with technology, entertainment and design?

คือหนูหมายถึงว่า ไวโอลินนี่เกี่ยวอะไรกับ

เทคโนโลยี ความบันเทิง และการออกแบบเหรอคะ?

Well, I count my iPod, cellphone and computer as technology,

อืม..อย่างไอพอด (iPod) โทรศัพท์มือถือ และคอมพิวเตอร์ หนูเรียกว่าเทคโนโลยี

but this has nothing to do with that.

แต่เจ้าไวโอลินเนี่ยไม่เห็นจะเกี่ยวกันเลยค่ะ

So I did a little research on it.

หนูก็เลยต้องค้นคว้าหาข้อมูลนิดนึง

Well, this is what I found.

แล้วก็ค้นพบว่า

Of course, I hope I can memorize it.

หวังว่าหนูยังจะพอจำได้นะคะ

(Clears throat)

The violin is made of a wood box and four metal strings.

ไวโอลินเป็นเครื่องดนตรีที่ทำจากกล่องไม้

By pulling a string, it vibrates and produces a sound wave,

มีสายอยู่ 4 สาย

พอเราสี สายไวโอลินก็จะสั่นสะเทือน

ทำให้เกิดคลื่นเสียง

which passes through a piece of wood called a bridge,

เสียงจะผ่านไปในแผ่นไม้ชิ้นนี้ที่เราเรียกว่า สะพานไวโอลิน(bridge) ค่ะ

แล้วก็ผ่านเข้าไปในกล่องไม้นี้ ซึ่งจะขยายความถี่ของเสียง

and goes down to the wood box and gets amplified, but ... let me think.

แต่...เออ...ขอหนูคิดแป่บนึงนะคะ

(Laughter)

คิดออกล่ะ จะให้พูดอีกแบบหนึ่งคือยังงี้ค่ะ

Placing your finger at different places on the fingerboard

พอเราวางนิ้วไปที่ตำแหน่งต่างกันบนแป้นวางนิ้ว

changes the string length, and that changes the frequency of the sound wave.

ก็จะเป็นการเปลี่ยนระยะความยาวของสาย

ซึ่งจะทำให้ความถี่ของคลื่นเสียงเปลี่ยนไปด้วย

(Sighs) Oh, my gosh!

(Laughter)

โหย...ทำไปได้ไงเนี่ย

OK, this is sort of technology,

(เสียงหัวเราะ)

อะค่ะ จริงๆแล้วมันก็เป็นเทคโนโลยีได้นะคะ

but I can call it a 16th-century technology.

แต่หนูเรียกว่า เทคโนโลยีแห่งศตวรรษที่ 16 ค่ะ

But actually, the most fascinating thing that I found

จริงๆแล้ว สิ่งที่น่าทึ่งที่สุดที่หนูค้นพบ

was that even the audio system or wave transmission nowadays

are still based on the same principle of producing and projecting sound.

Isn't that cool?

Design -- I love its design.

การออกแบบ -- หนูชอบการออกแบบของไวโอลินค่ะ

I remember when I was little, my mom asked me,

หนูยังจำได้อยู่เลยว่าตอนหนูเล็กๆ

แม่ถามหนูว่า

"Would you like to play the violin or the piano?"

อยากเล่นไวโอลินหรือเปียโนจ๊ะลูก

I looked at that giant monster and said to myself --

หนูก็จ้องเจ้าสัตว์ประหลาดยักษ์นั่น

แล้วคิดในใจว่า

"I am not going to lock myself on that bench the whole day!"

ไม่เอาอ่ะ หนูจะไม่ผูกตัวเองไว้กับม้านั่งนั่น

ตลอดทั้งวันหรอก

(Laughter)

This is small and lightweight.

เนี่ย เล็กแล้วก็เบาด้วย

I can play from standing, sitting or walking.

หนูยืนเล่นก็ได้ นั่งเล่นก็ได้ เดินไปเล่นไปยังได้เลย

And, you know what?

แล้วคุณรู้อะไรหรือเปล่าคะ

The best of all is that if I don't want to practice,

แต่ว่าที่เจ๋งที่สุดคือ ถ้าเกิดหนูไม่อยากซ้อมขึ้นมา

(Whispering) I can hide it.

หนูแอบเอาไปซ่อนได้อีกตะหาก

(Laughter)

The violin is very beautiful.

ไวโอลินเป็นอะไรที่สวยมากๆค่ะ

Some people relate it as the shape of a lady.

บางคนบอกว่าเหมือนทรวดทรงของหญิงสาว

But whether you like it or not, it's been so for more than 400 years,

แต่คุณจะชอบหรือเปล่าก็เถอะ

มันก็อยู่ของมันมาตั้ง 400 กว่าปีมาล่ะ

unlike modern stuff [that] easily looks dated.

But I think it's very personal and unique that,

although each violin looks pretty similar,

no two violins sound the same --

even from the same maker or based on the same model.

Entertainment -- I love the entertainment.

ความบันเทิง -- หนูรักความบันเทิงค่ะ

But actually, the instrument itself isn't very entertaining.

แต่จริงๆแล้ว เครื่องดนตรีโดยตัวมันเอง

ก็ไม่ได้สนุกสนานบันเทิงอะไรหรอกค่ะ

I mean, when I first got my violin and tried to play around on it,

คืองี้ค่ะ ตอนที่หนูเพิ่งได้ไวโอลินมาครั้งแรก

it was actually really bad,

แล้วก็ลองหัดเล่น

ไม่ได้เรื่องเลยค่ะ

because it didn't sound the way I'd heard from other kids --

สีได้ออกมาเสียงไม่เหมือนกับที่หนูได้ยินเด็กคนอื่นเขาสีกันเลย

it was so horrible and so scratchy.

แย่มากๆ ขรุขระกระท่อนกระแท่นสุดๆ

So, it wasn't entertaining at all.

ไม่ได้ฟังแล้วเพลินใจอะไรกับเค้าเลย

But besides, my brother found this very funny:

ร้ายกว่านั้นก็คือ พี่ชายหนูเขาว่าคันสีไวโอลินเนี่ยมันดูตลกมาก

Yuk! Yuk! Yuk!

ย๊าค ย๊าค ย๊าค อะไรแบบเนี้ย

(Laughter)

A few years later, I heard a joke

สองสามปีต่อมา หนูไปได้ยินเรื่องขำฮาเรื่องนึงของ

about the greatest violinist, Jascha Heifetz.

นักไวโอลินชั้นครูของโลก ก็คือ ยัชชา ไฮเฟตซ์ (Jascha Heifetz)

After Mr. Heifetz's concert,

หลังจากที่คุณไฮเฟตซ์เล่นคอนเสิร์ตจบลง

a lady came over and complimented him:

มีผู้หญิงคนนึงเดินเข้ามาชมว่า

"Oh, Mr. Heifetz, your violin sounded so great tonight!"

คุณไฮเฟตซ์ค่ะ ไวโอลินคุณคืนนี้เยี่ยมยอดจริงๆค่ะ

And Mr. Heifetz was a very cool person,

คุณไฮเฟตซ์แกเป็นคนเก๋าสุดๆอยู่แล้ว

so he picked up his violin and said,

แกก็ยกไวโอลินขึ้นมาแนบหูแล้วบอกว่า

"Funny -- I don't hear anything."

ตลกแล้วคุณ ผมไม่เห็นจะได้ยินเสียงอะไรเลยครับ

(Laughter)

Now I realize that as the musician,

ตอนนี้ ด้วยความเป็นนักดนตรี หนูก็รู้ซึ้งเลยค่ะว่า

we human beings, with our great mind, artistic heart and skill,

มนุษย์เรามีความฉลาดปราชญ์เปรื่อง

มีหัวใจศิลปิน และมีทักษะความชำนาญ

can change this 16th-century technology and a legendary design

ที่สามารถเปลี่ยนเทคโนโลยีแห่งศตวรรษที่ 16

และงานออกแบบสร้างสรรค์ชั้นตำนาน

to a wonderful entertainment.

ให้กลายเป็นความสนุกสนานบันเทิงได้

Now I know why I'm here.

At first, I thought I was just going to be here to perform,

ก่อนอื่น หนูก็คิดแค่ว่าหนูจะแค่มาแสดงดนตรี

but unexpectedly, I learned and enjoyed much more.

แต่ไม่ได้คิดมาก่อนเลยว่า ที่ได้มากกว่าเยอะเลยคือหนูได้เรียนรู้และได้รับความเพลิดเพลินค่ะ

But ... although some of the talks were quite up there for me.

ถึงแม้ว่า บางเพลงหนูต้องบีนบันไดฟังก็ตาม

(Laughter)

Like the multi-dimension stuff.

เหมือนเป็นอะไรที่มีหลายมิติ

I mean, honestly, I'd be happy enough

ให้พูดตามจริงนะคะ หนูพอใจมากอยู่แล้ว

if I could actually get my two dimensions correct in school.

ถ้าตอนอยู่โรงเรียน หนูเรียนอะไรที่มีแค่สองมิติได้เข้าใจหน่ะค่ะ

(Laughter)

But actually, the most impressive thing to me is that --

จริงๆแล้ว สิ่งที่หนูประทับใจมากที่สุด

well, actually, I would also like to say this for all children

ก็คือ ... อืม ... จริงๆแล้วก็คือ

หนูอยากจะเป็นตัวแทนของเด็กๆทุกคน

is to say thank you to all adults, for actually caring for us a lot,

ที่จะกล่าวคำขอบคุณผู้ใหญ่ทุกท่านค่ะ

ที่ให้การดูแลใส่ใจพวกเราเป็นอย่างดี

and to make our future world much better.

ที่ปูทางให้พวกเรามีอนาคตอันสดใส
