Light, bright, and cheerful.

ڕوناک، گەش، دڵخۆش.

It's some of the most familiar of all early 18th century music.

لە بەناوبانگترین مۆسیقاکانی سەرەتاکانی سەدەی ١٨ــە یە.

It's been featured in uncounted films and television commercials,

نمایشێکی بێشومارانەی بۆ کراوە لە فیلم و ڕێکلامە تەلەفیزۆنییەکان،

but what is it and why does it sound that way?

بەڵام ئەمە چییە؟ بۆچی ئاوازەکەی بەو جۆرەیە؟

This is the opening of "Spring" from "The Four Seasons,"

ئەمە سەرەتای ''بەهار'' ی '' چوار وەرز'' ەکەیە،

by Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi.

لەلایەن ئاوازدانەری ئیتاڵی ئەنتۆنیۆ ڤیڤاڵدی.

"The Four Seasons" are famous in part because they are a delight to the ear.

'''چوار وەرزەکە"" بەناوبانگن بەهۆی ئەوەی چێژبەخشن بۆ گوێ.

However, even more notable

لەگەڵ ئەوەشدا، تەنانەت دیارتر

is the fact that they have stories to tell.

لە ڕاستیدا ئەوان چیرۆکیان هەیە بۆ گوتن.

At the time of their publication in Amsterdam in 1725,

لە کاتی بڵاوبوونەوەیان لە ئەمستردام لە ١٧٢٥،

they were accompanied by poems

بە هۆنراوەکان یاوەری دەکران

describing exactly what feature of that season

کە سیماکانی ئەو وەرزەیان ڕوندەکردەوە

Vivaldi intended to capture in musical terms.

ڤیڤاڵدی ویستی ئەوە بکات لە ڕێی زاراوەی مۆسیقاوە.

In providing specific plot content for instrumental music,

بە ئامادەکردنی پارچەیەکی دیاریکراو بۆ ئامێرە میوزیکییەکان،

Vivaldi was generations ahead of his time.

If one were to read the poems simultaneously to hearing the music,

one would find the poetic scenes

synchronizing nicely with the musical imagery.

We are told that the birds welcome spring with happy song,

پێمان گووتراوە کە باڵندەکان بە غەزەل خوێندن پێشوازی لە بەهار دەکەن،

and here they are doing exactly that.

و لێرەش هەمان شت دەکەن.

Soon, however, a thunderstorm breaks out.

لەگەڵ ئەوەشدا، بە ، ڕەشەبایەک دەست پێدەکات.

Not only is there musical thunder and lightning,

نەک تەنها گرمەی میوزیک و بروسکە هەیە،

there are also more birds,

بەهەمان شێوە باڵندەی زیاتریش هەیە،

wet, frightened, and unhappy.

تەڕ، ترساو، و خەمناک.

In "Summer," the turtle dove sings her name "tortorella" in Italian,

لە هاویندا، قومرییەک ناوی خۆی دەچڕێت بە ئیتاڵی ''tortorella''،

before a hail storm flattens the fields.

پێش ئەوەی ڕەشەبایەکی بە تەرزە کێلگەکە تەخت بکات.

"Autumn" brings eager hunters dashing out in pursuit of their prey.

The "Winter" concerto begins with teeth chattering in the cold

Then it's back out into the storm

where there'll be slips and falls on the ice.

بۆ شوێنێک کە خلیسکان و کەوتن هەیە لەسەر سەهۆڵ.

In these first weeks of winter, the old year is coming to a close,

لە هەفتە سەرەتاییەکانی زستاندا، ساڵە کۆنەکە نزیک دەبیتەوە،

and so does Vivaldi's musical exploration of the seasons.

بەهەمان شێوەش گەڕانە وەرزییەکانی ڤیڤاڵدی.

Not until the early 19th century

هەرچەند تا سەرەتای سەدەی ١٩

would such expressive instrumental program music, as it was known,

become popular.

By then, larger, more varied ensembles were the rule

with woodwinds, brass, and percussion to help tell the tale.

But Vivaldi pulled it off with just one violin, strings, and a harpsichord.

Unlike his contemporary Bach,

He preferred to offer readily accessible entertainment to his listeners

So the first movement of the "Spring" concerto begins with a theme for spring

and ends with it, too, slightly varied from when it was last heard.

و هەر بەوەش کۆتایی دێت، کەمێک گۆڕاوە لەوەی پێشتر بیستومانە.

It was an inspired way to attract listeners,

ئەوە ڕێگەیەکی ئیلهام بەخش بوو بۆ دڵخۆشکردنی بیستەرکان،

and Vivaldi,

و ڤیڤاڵدی،

considered one of the most electrifying violinists of the early 18th century,

understood the value of attracting audiences.

Others presented the young musicians of the Pietà,

Most of the students were orphans.

Music training was intended not only as social skills suitable for young ladies

Vivaldi's music served as diversion for all,

not just for the wealthy aristocrats.

300 years later, it's an approach that still works,
