Light, bright, and cheerful.

경쾌함. 발랄함. 그리고 흥겨움.

It's some of the most familiar of all early 18th century music.

18세기 초 음악들 중에서 가장 친숙한 곡이죠.

It's been featured in uncounted films and television commercials,

영화와 텔레비전 광고에 수도 없이 사용되었는데요.

but what is it and why does it sound that way?

그럼 이 곡은 무슨 곡이며 왜 이런 느낌을 갖게 할까요?

This is the opening of "Spring" from "The Four Seasons,"

지금 들으시는 곡은 "사계" 중 "봄"의 도입부로

by Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi.

이탈리아 작곡가인 안토니오 비발디의 곡입니다.

"The Four Seasons" are famous in part because they are a delight to the ear.

"사계"가 유명한 이유에는 듣기 흥겹다는 점도 있죠.

However, even more notable

하지만 더 주목할만한 부분은

is the fact that they have stories to tell.

그 안에 이야기가 담겨있다는 사실입니다.

At the time of their publication in Amsterdam in 1725,

1725년, 암스테르담에서 이 곡이 발표됐을 때

they were accompanied by poems

시들과 함께 발표됐는데요

describing exactly what feature of that season

그 시들은 비발디가 음악적 관점에서 포착하고자 했던

Vivaldi intended to capture in musical terms.

In providing specific plot content for instrumental music,

기악에 구체적인 줄거리를 담았다는 측면에서

Vivaldi was generations ahead of his time.

비발디는 시대를 앞선 인물이었습니다.

If one were to read the poems simultaneously to hearing the music,

음악을 들으며 시를 같이 읽으면

one would find the poetic scenes

시적 장면들이 음악적 영상들과 잘 맞아떨어지는 것을 알 수 있죠.

synchronizing nicely with the musical imagery.

We are told that the birds welcome spring with happy song,

새들이 즐겁게 노래하며 봄을 맞이한다고 흔히 말하는데요.

and here they are doing exactly that.

이 부분이 그걸 정확히 표현하고 있죠.

Soon, however, a thunderstorm breaks out.

하지만 곧 뇌우가 몰아칩니다.

Not only is there musical thunder and lightning,

음악적인 천둥 번개뿐 아니라

there are also more birds,

새들도 더 많이 등장하죠.

wet, frightened, and unhappy.

젖고 겁에 질린 불행한 새들입니다.

In "Summer," the turtle dove sings her name "tortorella" in Italian,

"여름"에는 멧비둘기가 자기 이름인 "토토렐라"를 이탈리아어로 노래합니다.

before a hail storm flattens the fields.

그 후 우박과 함께 폭풍이 몰아쳐 들판의 풀들이 납작 눕습니다.

"Autumn" brings eager hunters dashing out in pursuit of their prey.

"가을"에는 열정적인 사냥꾼들이 사냥감을 쫓습니다.

The "Winter" concerto begins with teeth chattering in the cold

"겨울" 협주곡은 추위 때문에 이가 부딪치는 소리로 시작합니다.

before one takes refuge by a crackling fire.

그리고 탁탁 소리내며 불타는 모닥불 곁에서 휴식을 취하죠.

Then it's back out into the storm

다시 폭풍우가 몰아치는 곳으로 나가는데요.

where there'll be slips and falls on the ice.

얼음 위에서 미끄러지고 넘어집니다.

In these first weeks of winter, the old year is coming to a close,

and so does Vivaldi's musical exploration of the seasons.

계절에 대한 비발디의 음악적 탐구도 막을 내립니다.

Not until the early 19th century

19세기 초가 되고 나서야

would such expressive instrumental program music, as it was known,

By then, larger, more varied ensembles were the rule

with woodwinds, brass, and percussion to help tell the tale.

But Vivaldi pulled it off with just one violin, strings, and a harpsichord.

하지만 비발디는 바이올린 하나, 현악기, 하프시코드 하나만으로 그걸 해냈죠.

Unlike his contemporary Bach,

동시대를 살았던 바흐와는 달리

Vivaldi wasn't much interested in complicated fugues.

비발디는 복잡한 둔주곡에는 관심이 별로 없었습니다.

He preferred to offer readily accessible entertainment to his listeners

비발디는 청중들이 쉽게 다가갈 수 있는 즐거움을 제공하고자 했습니다.

with melodies that pop back up later in a piece

to remind us of where we've been.

So the first movement of the "Spring" concerto begins with a theme for spring

and ends with it, too, slightly varied from when it was last heard.

It was an inspired way to attract listeners,

and Vivaldi,

considered one of the most electrifying violinists of the early 18th century,

Even in the composer's own time,

비발디가 살았던 시대에도

Vivaldi's music served as diversion for all,

비발디의 음악은 부유한 귀족 뿐만 아니라

not just for the wealthy aristocrats.

모두에게 즐거움을 주었습니다.

300 years later, it's an approach that still works,

300년이 지난 후에도 여전히 대중에게 다가가고 있고

and Vivaldi's music still sounds like trotting horses on the move.

비발디의 음악은 여전히 달리는 말처럼 경쾌합니다.
