How do you know you're real?

چۆن دەزانیت ڕاستەقینەیت؟

It's an obvious question until you try to answer it,

پرسیارێکی ئاشکرایە تا ئەو کاتەی بەدوای وەڵامەکە دەگەڕێیت،

but let's take it seriously.

با بەڕاستی وەریبگرین.

How do you really know you exist?

چۆن بەڕاستی دەزانیت بونت هەیە؟

In his "Meditations on First Philosophy,"

لە کتێبی“بیرکردنەوە لە فەلسەفەی یەکەم،”

René Descartes tried to answer that very question,

رێنێ دیکارت بەدوای وەڵامی ئەم پرسیارە دەگەڕا،

demolishing all his preconceived notions and opinions

هەموو بیروبۆچوونەکانی سەرەتای وەلاوە ناوە

to begin again from the foundations.

بۆ ئەوەی لە بنەڕەتەوە دەست پێبکاتەوە.

All his knowledge had come from his sensory perceptions of the world.

هەموو زانیارییەکانی لە ڕێگەی هەستەکانییەوە سەریهەڵدابوو.

Same as you, right?

ڕێک وەک تۆ، وایە؟

You know you're watching this video with your eyes, hearing it with your ears.

تۆ بە چاوەکانتەوە سەیری ئەم ڤیدیۆیە دەکەیت بە گوێکانتەوە گوێی لێدەگریت.

Your senses show you the world as it is.

هەستەکانت جیهان بە شێوەی ڕاستەقینەیی خۆیی نیشان دەدەن.

They aren't deceiving you, but sometimes they do.

ئەوان فێڵت لێ ناکەن، بەڵام هەندێک جار وا دەکەن.

You might mistake a person far away for someone else,

لەوانەیە تۆ کەسێک بە کەسێکی کە تێبگەیت لە دوورەوە،

or you're sure you're about to catch a flyball,

یان کە دەتەوێت تۆپێک بگریتەوە لە ئاسمان،

and it hits the ground in front of you.

و لە بەردەم تۆدا بەو زەوییەکە دەکەوێت.

But come on, right here and now,

بەڵام دەی، ڕێک لێرە و ئێستا،

you know what's right in front of you is real.

دەزانی کە ئەوەی لە بەردەمت دایە ئەوە ڕاستە.

Your eyes, your hands, your body: that's you.

چاوەکانت، دەستەکانت، جەستەت، ئەمە تۆیت.

Only crazy people would deny that, and you know you're not crazy.

تەنها شێتەکان نکۆڵی لەوە دەکەن، و تۆ دەزانیت کە شێت نیت.

Anyone who'd doubt that must be dreaming.

هەرکەسێک گومان لەوەبکات ئەوە خەون دەبینێت.

Oh no, what if you're dreaming?

نەخێر، چی گەر تۆ خەون ببینیت؟

Dreams feel real.

خەونەکان وەک ڕاستی وان.

You can believe you're swimming, flying

دەتوانیت بڕوا بکەیت کە مەلە دەکەیت، دەفڕیت

or fighting off monsters with your bare hands,

یان بە دەستەکانی خۆت لەگەڵ دڕندەکان شەڕ دەکەیت،

when your real body is lying in bed.

لە کاتێکدا جەستەی ڕاستەقینەت لەسەر جێگاکە پاڵکەوتووە. نەخێر، نا، نا.

No, no, no.

When you're awake, you know you're awake.

تۆ بە ئاگایت، دەزانیت کەوا بە ئاگایت.

Ah! But when you aren't, you don't know you aren't,

بەڵام کە بە ئاگا نیت، نازانیت کەوا بە ئاگا نیت،

so you can't prove you aren't dreaming.

بۆیە ناتوانیت بیسەلمێنیت کە خەون نابینیت.

Maybe the body you perceive yourself to have isn't really there.

لەوانەیە ئەو جەستەییەی کە پێشبینی دەکەیت هەتبێت بەڕاستی لەوێ نەبێت.

Maybe all of reality, even its abstract concepts,

لەوانەیە هەموو ڕاستی وابێت، تەنانەت تێگەیشتنە سادەکانیش،

like time, shape, color and number are false,

وەکو کات، شێوە، ڕەنگ و ژمارە هەڵەن،

all just deceptions concocted

هەموویان تەنها فێڵێکن داهێنراون...

by an evil genius!

لە لایەن بلیمەتێکی خراپەوە!

No, seriously.

نەخێر. بەڕاستی.

Descartes asks if you can disprove the idea that an evil genius demon

دیکارت دەپرسێت گەر باوەڕ بەو بیرۆکەیە بهێنیت کە بلیمەتێکی خراپ...

has tricked you into believing reality is real.

فێڵی لێ کردوویت کەوا ڕاستی ڕاستەقینەییە.

Perhaps this diabolical deceiver has duped you.

لەوانەیە ئەو فێڵزانە شەیتانە تۆی هەڵخەڵەتاندبێت.

The world, your perceptions of it, your very body.

جیهان، تەواوی شتەکانی ناوی تەنانەت جەستەی خۆشت.

You can't disprove that they're all just made up,

ناتوانیت بڕوا بەوە نەکەیت کەوا هەموویان دروست نەکراون،

and how could you exist without them?

و چۆن دەتوانیت بوونت هەبێت بەبێ ئەوان؟

You couldn't! So, you don't.

ناتوانیت، بۆیە بوونت نابێت.

Life is but a dream,

ژیان خەونێکە،

and I bet you aren't row, row, rowing the boat merrily at all, are you?

و گرەو دەکەم کە تۆ دڵخۆش نیت تیایدا، وانییە؟

No, you're rowing it wearily

نەخێر، تۆ بە گەمژەیی بەسەری دەبەیت، وەکو گەمژەییەکی بوون نەبووی فێڵ لێکراو.

like the duped, nonexistent doof you are/aren't.

Do you find that convincing?

ئەمە بە باوەڕپێکراو دەزانیت؟

Are you persuaded?

ئۆ هاوڕایت لەگەڵ ئەمە؟

If you aren't, good; if you are, even better,

گەر وانیت ئەوە باشە؛ گەر وایت ئەوە باشتر،

because by being persuaded,

چونکە بە هاوڕابوونت لەگەڵ ئەمە،

you would prove that you're a persuaded being.

دەیسەلمێنیت کەوا بوونێکی باوەڕپێکراویت.

You can't be nothing if you think you're something,

ناتوانیت ببیتە هیچ گەر پێتوابێت کە شتێکیت،

even if you think that something is nothing

تەنانەت گەو وا بیر بکەیتەوە کە شتێک هیچ نییە

because no matter what you think, you're a thinking thing,

چونکە گرنگ نییە چۆن بیر دەکەیتەوە، تۆ بوونێکی زانینخوازیت،

or as Descartes put it, "I think, therefore I am,"

یان وەکو ئەوەی دیکارت دەڵێت: “من بیر دەکەمەوە بۆیە هەم،”

and so are you, really.

بە هەمان شێوە تۆش، بەڕاستی.
