What's the worst bug on the planet?

خراپترین مێشولە لە جیهاندا چییە؟

You might vote for the horsefly or perhaps the wasp,

لەوانەیە بڵێی خوێن مژەکان، یانیش زەردەواڵە،

but for many people,

بەڵام بۆ زۆربەی خەڵک،

the worst offender is by far the mosquito.

خراپترين پەتا هی مەگەزەکانە،

The buzzing, the biting,

گیزەگیزکردن، گازلێگرتن،

the itching,

خورانیش،

the mosquito is one of the most commonly detested pests in the world.

پەتای مێشوولە یەکێکە لە پەتا هەرە گرانەکان لە جیهاندا.

In Alaska, swarms of mosquitos can get so thick

لە ئالاسکا، کۆمەڵێ مێشوولە دەتوانن ئەوەندە بەهێزبن

that they actually asphyxiate caribou.

کە بتوانن ئاسکێک بخنکێنن،

And mosquito-borne diseases kill millions of people every year.

و پەتای گوازراوەی مێشوولە هەموو ساڵێک بە ملیۆنان خەڵک دەکوژێت.

The scourge that is the mosquito isn't new.

ئەو نەخۆشییە گوازراوانەی مێشوولە، نوێ نییە.

Mosquitoes have been around for over a hundred million years

مێشوولەکان نزيکەی زیاتر لە سەد ملیۆن ساڵە بوونیان هەیە

and over that time have coevolved with all sorts of species,

و پاشان لەگەڵ هەموو جۆرەکانیتری گیانلەبەران پەرەیان سەندووە.

including our own.

بە هی خۆشمانەوە.

There are actually thousands of species of mosquitos in the world,

لە ڕاستیدا، هەزار جۆری مێشوولە لە جیهاندا هەیە.

but they all share one insidious quality:

they suck blood,

خوێن دەمژن،

and they're really, really good at sucking blood.

Here's how they do it.

بەم جۆرە دەیکەن.

After landing, a mosquito will slather

دوای نیشتنەوە، بە چڕی بڵاودەبنەوە

some saliva onto the victim's skin, which works like an antiseptic,

هەندێک لیکاو دەخەنە ناو جێبرینی پێستەکە، کە وەک دژە گەنین کاردەکات،

numbing the spot so we don't notice their attack.

شوێنی پێوەدانەکە سڕدەکات، بۆیە ئازاری نییە.

This is what causes the itchy, red bumps, by the way.

بەو بۆنەیەوە، ئەوە هۆکاری، خوران و سوربونەوەکەیە.

Then the bug will use its serrated mandibles

دواتر مێشوولەکە ددانە تیژەکانی بەکاردەهێنی

to carve a little hole in your skin,

بۆ دروستکردنی کونێکی بچووک لەسەر پێست،

allowing it to probe around with its proboscis,

بە لووتە زلەکەی پەستانی لێدەکات بە نزیکەی میلێک،

searching for a blood vessel.

بۆ دەماری خوێن دەگەڕێت.

When it hits one, the lucky parasite can suck

کە یەکێکیان دۆزیەوە، مشەخۆرێک دەتوانێ بیمژێت

two to three times its weight in blood.

دوو بۆ سێجار قورسایی دەخاتە ناو خوێنەکە.

Turns out we don't really like that too much.

بیوەستێنە، بەڕاستی زۆر حەزمان لەوە نییە.

In fact, humans hate mosquitos so much

لە ڕاستیدا، مرۆڤ زۆر ڕقی لە مێشوولەیە

that we spend billions of dollars worldwide

بە ملیارەها دۆلار خەرجدەکەین لە جیهاندا

to keep them away from us --

from citronella candles

to bug sprays to heavy-duty agricultural pesticides.

But it's not just that mosquitos are annoying,

بەڵام مێشووولە تەنیا بێزارکەر نییە،

they're also deadly.

هەروەها بکوژیشن.

Mosquitos can transmit everything from malaria to yellow fever

مێشوولە دەتوانێ مەلاریا وزەردەتا و هەمووشتێک بڵاوبکاتەوە

to West Nile virus to dengue.

ڤایرۆسی گوازراوەی خۆرئاوای نیل.

Over a million people worldwide

زیاتر لە ملیۆنێک کەس لە جیهاندا

die every year from mosquito-borne diseases,

ساڵانە بە هۆی پەتای مێشوولەوە دەمرن،

and that's just people.

ئەوە بەس مرۆڤ.

Horses, dogs, cats,

ئەسپ، سەگ، پشیلە،

they can all get diseases from mosquitoes too.

ئەوانیش توشی پەتای مێشوولە دەبن.

So, if these bugs are so dastardly, why don't we just get rid of them?

کەواتە، ئەگەر ئەو مێشوولانە زۆر ترسنۆکن بۆچی لێیان ڕزگارمان نابێت؟

We are humans after all,

لە کۆتاییدا، مرۆڤین

and we're pretty good at getting rid of species.

و زۆر باشین لە ڕزگاربوونمان لەو جۆرانە

Well, it's not quite so simple.

باشە، ئەوە زۆریش ئاسان نییه

ڕزگاربون لە مێشوولە، سەرچاوەی خواردن ناهێڵێت

Getting rid of the mosquito removes a food source

for lots of organisms, like frogs and fish and birds.

بۆ زۆربەی بونەوەرەکان ، وەک : بۆق و ماسی و باڵندە.

Without them, plants would lose a pollinator.

بەبێ ئەوان، درەختەکان هەڵاڵە هێنەرەکانیان نابێت

But some scientists say

بەڵام هەندێک زانا دەڵین

that mosquitos aren't actually all that important.

کە لەڕاستیدا مێشوولەکان ئەوەندەش گرنگ نین.

دەڵێن، ئەگەر ڕزگارمان بوایە لێیان،

If we got rid of them, they argue,

another species would simply take their place

بە ئاسانی بونەوەری دی شوێنی ئەوان دەگرتەوە

and we'd probably have far fewer deaths from malaria.

و مردنی کەمتریشمان دەبوو بە هۆی مەلاریاوە.

The problem is that nobody knows what would happen

کێشەکە ئەوەیە کەس نازانێت چی ڕوودەدات

if we killed off all the mosquitos.

ئەگەر هەموو مێشوولەکانمان بکوشتایە.

Something better might take their spot

لەوانەیە شتێکی باشتر شوێنیان بگرتایەوە

or perhaps something even worse.

ڕەنگە شتێکی خراپتریش بێت.

The question is, are we willing to take that risk?

پرسیارەکە ئەوەیە، ئێمە دەمانەوێت ئەو مەترسیە بگرینە ئەستۆ؟
