There are things we say

कुनै अपरचित व्यक्ति वा

when we catch the eye of a stranger

कुनै छिमेकी भेट हुदा, हामी अभिवादनस्वरूप

or a neighbor walking by.

केही कुरा सोध्दछौं ।

We say, "Hello, how are you?

"के छ? कस्तो छ ?

It's a beautiful day.

आजको दिन रमाइलो छ है ?

How do you feel?"

तपाईंलाइ के लागेको छ.. "

These sound kind of meaningless, right? And, in some ways, they are.

यस्सो हेर्दा, यी कुराहरु बेमतलबका जस्ता लाग्छन् ।

They have no semantic meaning.

यीनले विशेष अर्थ पनि राख्दैनन् ।

It doesn't matter how you are or what the day is like.

They have something else.

They have social meaning.

What we mean when we say those things is:

About seven years ago, I started documenting my experiences

to try to figure out why.

What I found was that something really beautiful was going on.

They were genuine emotional connections.

So one day, I was standing on a corner waiting for the light to change,

which, I'm a New Yorker,

so that means I was actually standing in the street on the storm drain,

as if that could get me across faster.

And there's an old man standing next to me.

So he's wearing, like, a long overcoat and sort of an old-man hat,

and he looked like somebody from a movie.

And he says to me,

"Don't stand there. You might disappear."

So this is absurd, right?

But I did what he said. I stepped back onto the sidewalk.

And he smiled, and he said,

"Good. You never know.

I might have turned around,

This was weird,

He was so warm, and he was so happy that he'd saved me.

We had this little bond.

For a minute, I felt like my existence as a person

had been noticed,

and I was worth saving.

The really sad thing is,

in many parts of the world,

we're raised to believe that strangers are dangerous by default,

that we can't trust them, that they might hurt us.

बिश्वास गर्न हुन्न भन्ने मान्यता छ ।

But most strangers aren't dangerous.

We're uneasy around them because we have no context.

कुनै बिषय बस्तु नभएकोले संगै हुँदा हामीलाई अप्ठ्यारो लाग्छ ।

We don't know what their intentions are.

So instead of using our perceptions and making choices,

we rely on this category of "stranger."

I have a four-year-old.

When I say hello to people on the street,

she asks me why.

She says, "Do we know them?"

I say, "No, they're our neighbor."

I think twice every time I say that to her,

because I mean it, but as a woman, particularly,

I know that not every stranger on the street has the best intentions.

It is good to be friendly, and it's good to learn when not to be,

but none of that means we have to be afraid.

There are two huge benefits

to using our senses instead of our fears.

The first one is that it liberates us.

पहिलो - डरबाट मुक्ति ।

When you think about it,

using perception instead of categories

is much easier said than done.

प्रत्यक्ष अनुभव गर्नु नै राम्रो हो ।

Categories are something our brains use.

हाम्रो दिमाग वर्गीकरण गर्न पोख्त छ ।

When it comes to people,

जब कोही मानिस अगाडी देखिन्छ,

it's sort of a shortcut for learning about them.

उनीहरुको बारेमा थाहा पाउन छोटो उपाय खोज्छ

We see male, female, young, old,

हामी : पुरुष, महिला, युवा, बृद्ध,

black, brown, white, stranger, friend,

खैरो, कालो, अपरचित, मित्रको रुपमा

and we use the information in that box.

पूर्व जानकारी खोतल्न थाल्छ ।

It's quick, it's easy

यो छिटो छरितो तरिका हो,

and it's a road to bias.

And it means we're not thinking about people as individuals.

I know an American researcher who travels frequently

She's entering into towns and cities

She has no bonds, no connections.

She's a foreigner.

Her survival strategy is this:

उनको बाँच्ने तरिका थियो :

get one stranger to see you as a real, individual person.

उनलाई छुट्टै र वास्तविक रुपमा हेर्ने एउटा मान्छे खोज्ने ।

If you can do that, it'll help other people see you that way, too.

त्यस्तो गर्न सक्नुभयो भने, अरुले पनि तपाईंलाइ त्यस्तै नजरले हेर्नेछन् ।

The second benefit of using our senses has to do with intimacy.

स्व बिबेक प्रयोग गर्नुको दोस्रो फाइदा भनेको आत्मीयता हो ।

I know it sounds a little counterintuitive,

मलाई थाहा छ - यो अलि अनौठो लाग्ने कुरा हो

intimacy and strangers,

- अपरिचितसंग आत्मीयता ।

but these quick interactions can lead to a feeling

that sociologists call "fleeting intimacy."

So, it's a brief experience that has emotional resonance and meaning.

It's the good feeling I got

from being saved from the death trap of the storm drain by the old man,

or how I feel like part of a community

when I talk to somebody on my train on the way to work.

Sometimes it goes further.

कहिले कहीं, यो प्रसंग अझ गहिरो हुन्छ ।

Researchers have found that people often feel more comfortable

अनुसन्धानकर्ताहरुले भनेअनुसार मानिसहरु आफ्नो साथीहरु वा

being honest and open about their inner selves with strangers

परिवारका सदस्य संग भन्दा अपरिचितसंग कुरा गर्दा अझ बढी

than they do with their friends and their families --

खुलस्त तथा इमान्दार भएर आफ्नो भित्री कुरा गर्ने गर्छन् -

that they often feel more understood by strangers.

अपरिचितहरुले नै उनीहरुलाई बढी बुज्दछन् ।

This gets reported in the media with great lament.

यस्तोकुरा लाइ संचार माध्यमले बढो शोकपूर्वक सुनाउछन् ।

"Strangers communicate better than spouses!"

"अपरिचितहरुले आफ्नो जीवनसाथीले भन्दा बढी बुज्दछन्" ।

It's a good headline, right?

गज्ज़बको "हेड लाइन" छैन त?

I think it entirely misses the point.

मेरो बिचारमा यहाँ महत्वपूर्ण कुरा नै छुटेको छ ।

The important thing about these studies

अध्ययनहरुले भन्न खोजेको महत्वपूर्ण कुरा-

is just how significant these interactions can be;

यस्ता साना कुराकानी कत्तिको उपयोगी छ;

how this special form of closeness

यसबाट प्राप्त हुने आत्मीयताको

gives us something we need as much as we need our friends

मान्छेलाइ त्यतिनै खाँचो छ जति परिवार र

and our families.

साथीहरुबाट प्राप्त हुन्छ।

So how is it possible that we communicate so well with strangers?

अपरिचितहरुसंग राम्रोसंग सम्पर्क बनाउन केले गर्दा सम्भव हुन्छ ?

There are two reasons.

यसका दुईवटा कारण छन्:

The first one is that it's a quick interaction.

पहिलो छ - शीघ्र वार्तालाप ।

It has no consequences.

यसबाट कुनै निष्कर्ष निस्किदैन ।

It's easy to be honest with someone you're never going to see again, right?

दोहोराएर भेट नहुने कुनै पनि मानिससंग सोझो कुरा गर्न सकिन्छ, कि कसो ?

That makes sense.

त्यसो भन्न सकिन्छ ।

The second reason is where it gets more interesting.

दोश्रो कारण अझ रोचक छ ।

We have a bias when it comes to people we're close to.

आफ्नो नजिक भएका मानिससंग कुरा गर्दा हामी पूर्वाग्रही हुन्छौं ।

We expect them to understand us.

हामी उनीहरुले कुरा बुझ्ने अपेक्षा राख्छौं।

We assume they do,

and we expect them to read our minds.

So imagine you're at a party,

and you can't believe that your friend or your spouse

तपाईंलाइ चाडै हिड्न मनलागेको कुरा नबुझेर तपाईंको परिवार वा साथीले

isn't picking up on it that you want to leave early.

जाऊ भनेन भन्ने कुराको कल्पना गर्न सक्नुहुन्न ।

And you're thinking,

अनि तपाईं मनमनै भन्नुहुन्छ -

"I gave you the look."

"अघिदेखि आँखा सन्काइ रहेको छु त"

With a stranger, we have to start from scratch.

उता अपरिचितसंग कुरा गर्दा शून्यबाट सुरु गर्नुपर्छ ।

We tell the whole story,

हामी उनीहरुलाई हामी को हो,

we explain who the people are, how we feel about them;

उनीहरुलाई भेटेर कस्तो लागिरहेछ भनेर आफ्नो सबै कुरा सुनाउछौं;

we spell out all the inside jokes.

आफ्ना गोप्य कुराहरु खोल्छौं ।

And guess what?

त्यसको अर्थ के भयो त ? भन्दा

Sometimes they do understand us a little better.

कहिले कहीं, उनीहरुले हामी भन्दा राम्रै कुरा बुझिदिन्छ्न

OK.

So now that we know that talking to strangers matters,

यहाँसम्म आइपुग्दा हामीले अपरिचितसंग कुरा गर्नुको अर्थ बुझ्यौं ।

how does it work?

तर यसले काम कसरी गर्छ त ?

There are unwritten rules we tend to follow.

त्यहाँ केहि अलिखित नियमहरु छन् जसको पालना गर्नुपर्छ ।

The rules are very different depending on what country you're in,

what culture you're in.

In most parts of the US,

the baseline expectation in public

मानिसहरु शिष्टाचार र गोपनीयताको

is that we maintain a balance between civility and privacy.

सन्तुलन रहोस भन्ने विचार गर्दछन् ।

This is known as civil inattention.

यसलाई उनीहरु "शिस्ट उपेक्षा" भन्छन् ।

So, imagine two people are walking towards each other on the street.

मानौं सडकमा दुई जना विपरीत दिशाबाट एक अर्काको नजीक आउदैछन् ।

They'll glance at each other from a distance.

परैबाट उनीहरु एक अर्कालाई देखादेख गर्दछन् ।

That's the civility, the acknowledgment.

यो सामाजिकता वा शिस्टाचार हो ।

And then as they get closer, they'll look away,

जसै उनीहरु एक अर्काको नजीक पुग्छन्, एक अर्काको

to give each other some space.

सहजताको लागि अलि टाढा हेर्छन् ।

In other cultures,

people go to extraordinary lengths not to interact at all.

People from Denmark tell me

डेनमार्कका मानिसले भनेको -

that many Danes are so averse to talking to strangers,

अपरिचितसंग वार्तालाप गर्न यतिसम्म चाहन्नन् कि,

that they would rather miss their stop on the bus

बसमा उनीहरु आफ्नो स्टप भन्दा पर पुग्न तयार हुन्छन्,

than say "excuse me" to someone that they need to get around.

Instead, there's this elaborate shuffling of bags

आफ्नो झोला अगाडी सारेर वा

and using your body to say that you need to get past,

सांकेतिक रुपमा अगाडी जानुपरेको संकेत गर्छन्,

instead of using two words.

तर बाटो माग्न दुई शब्द बोल्दैनन् ।

In Egypt, I'm told,

मैंले सुनेको, इजिप्टमा,

it's rude to ignore a stranger,

अतिथि सत्कारको यति ठुलो महत्व छ कि,

and there's a remarkable culture of hospitality.

अपरिचितको उपेक्षा गर्नुलाई साह्रै अशिष्ट मानिन्छ ।

Strangers might ask each other for a sip of water.

अपरिचितहरु एक अर्कासंग एक घुट्को पानी पनि साटासाट गर्न सक्छन् ।

Or, if you ask someone for directions,

अथवा भनौ, तपाईले कसैसंग बाटो सोध्नुभयो भने

they're very likely to invite you home for coffee.

उनीहरुले तपाईंलाइ कफि खुवाउन घर लग्ने समेत सम्भावना हुन्छ ।

We see these unwritten rules most clearly when they're broken,

यस्ता अलिखित नियमहरु तब मात्रै अनुभव हुन्छन्, जब उनीहरु दु:खि देखिन्छन्

or when you're in a new place

वा तपाई नया ठाउंमा पुगेर के गर्दा ठिक होला

and you're trying to figure out what the right thing to do is.

भन्ने कुराको भेउ पाउने कोशिस गर्दै हुनुहुन्छ ।

Sometimes breaking the rules a little bit is where the action is.

कहिले कहीं यी नियम तोड्नलाई केही कार्य नै गर्नुपर्छ ।

In case it's not clear, I really want you to do this. OK?

कुरा प्रस्ट भएको छैन भने म प्रस्ट पार्छु, है त?

So here's how it's going to go.

हेर्नुस् कसरी अगाडी बढ्ने ।

Find somebody who is making eye contact.

पहिले तपाईंलाई हेरिरहेको मान्छे खोज्नुस् ।

That's a good signal.

यो पहिलो सकारात्मक संकेत हो ।

The first thing is a simple smile.

त्यसपछिको पहिलो काम हो - मीठो मुस्कान ।

If you're passing somebody on the street or in the hallway here, smile.

तपाईं नजिक आउदै गरेको मानिसलाई हेरर मुस्कुराउनुहोस् ।

See what happens.

हेर्नुहोस अनि के हुन्छ ।

Another is triangulation.

अर्को छ त्रिकोणीय विधि ।

There's you, there's a stranger,

तपाई हुनुहुन्छ, अपरिचित त्यहाँ छ,

there's some third thing that you both might see and comment on,

त्यहाँ तेस्रो कुनै वस्तु हुनुपर्छ जसलाई देखेर दुवैले प्रतिक्रिया जनाउन मिलोस् ।

like a piece of public art

जस्तै: कुनै पेन्टिंग, वा

or somebody preaching in the street

सडकमा भाषण दिंदै गरेको कुनै मान्छे,

or somebody wearing funny clothes.

वा अनौठो पहिरन भएको कुनै मानिस ।

Give it a try.

प्रयास गर्नुहोस् ।

Make a comment about that third thing, and see if starts a conversation.

तेस्रो वस्तुमा प्रतिक्रिया जनाउनुहोस् र हेर्नुस, वार्तालाप सुरु हुन्छ कि ?

Another is what I call noticing.

अर्को तरिका छ - प्रतिक्रिया जनाउने ।

This is usually giving a compliment.

साधारणतया यसमा प्रशंसा गर्ने गरिन्छ ।

I'm a big fan of noticing people's shoes.

मलाई अरु मान्छेको जुत्ता याद गर्न खुब मन पर्छ ।

I'm actually not wearing fabulous shoes right now,

यतिखेर मैंले एकदम राम्रो जुत्ता लगाईरहेको त छैन

but shoes are fabulous in general.

तर जुत्ताहरु एकदमै राम्रा हुन्छन् ।

And they're pretty neutral as far as giving compliments goes.

जुत्ताको प्रशंसा गर्नु स्वाभाविक पनि देखिन्छ ।

People always want to tell you things about their awesome shoes.

मान्छेहरु आफ्नो राम्रो जुत्ताको बारेमा सुनाउन सधैं उत्सुक पनि हुन्छन् ।

You may have already experienced the dogs and babies principle.

तपाईंहरुले बच्चाहरु एवं कुकुरहरुको तरिका त पक्कै प्रयोग गरिसक्नुभएको होला ।

It can be awkward to talk to someone on the street;

बाटोमा नचिनेको मान्छेसंग कुरागर्नु असहज पनि हुन्छ

you don't know how they're going to respond.

उनीहरुले कस्तो प्रतिक्रिया जनाउछन् थाहाहुन्न

But you can always talk to their dog or their baby.

तर उनीहरुको बच्चा वा कुकुरसंग सधैं कुरा गर्न सकिन्छ

The dog or the baby

मानिसको लागि बच्चा वा कुकुर

is a social conduit to the person,

सामाजिक सम्बाहक हुन्, र तिनीहरुप्रति

and you can tell by how they respond

जनाएको प्रतिक्रियाबाट उनीहरु

whether they're open to talking more.

कुरा गर्न कतिको उत्सुक छन्, थाहा हुन्छ

The last one I want to challenge you to

अन्तिम तथा चुनौतीपूर्ण अर्को तरिका छ -

is disclosure.

खुलासा गर्नु ।

This is a very vulnerable thing to do,

यो तरिका अति सम्वेदनशील छ

and it can be very rewarding.

तर यो निकै उपयोगी हुनसक्छ ।

So next time you're talking to a stranger

अर्कोपल्ट कुनै अपरिचित संग कुरा गर्दा

and you feel comfortable,

तपाईंलाइ सहज महशुस भयो भने

tell them something true about yourself,

आफ्नो कुनै व्यक्तिगत कुरा सुनाउनुहोस्

something really personal.

कुनै नितान्त व्यक्तिगत कुरा

You might have that experience I talked about of feeling understood.

तपाइलाई अनुभब होला, केही मानिसले तपाईंलाइ सहजै बुज्न सक्छन् ।

Sometimes in conversation, it comes up,

कहिलेकहीं कुराकानीको क्रममा मानिसहरु

people ask me, "What does your dad do?" or, "Where does he live?"

प्रश्न गर्छन् - तपाईंको बुवा के काम गर्नुहुन्छ, कहाँ हुनुहुन्छ ?

And sometimes I tell them the whole truth,

कहिले कहिँ म उनीहरुलाइ वास्तविक कुरा भन्छु

which is that he died when I was a kid.

मेरो बुवा म सानै हुँदा बित्नुभएको थियो ।

Always in those moments,

यस्तो समयमा उनीहरु पनि

they share their own experiences of loss.

We tend to meet disclosure with disclosure,

even with strangers.

So, here it is.

कुरा बुझिहाल्नुभयो ।

When you talk to strangers, you're making beautiful interruptions

जब अपरिचितसंग कुरा गर्नुहुन्छ तपाईं

into the expected narrative of your daily life

दैनिकीमा मिठो हस्तक्षेप गर्दै हुनुहुन्छ

and theirs.

स्वयंको र उसको पनि ।

You're making unexpected connections.

तपाई अनपेक्षित सम्बन्ध जोड्दै हुनुहुन्छ ।

If you don't talk to strangers, you're missing out on all of that.

हामी आफ्ना केटाकेटीहरुलाई

अपरिचितको बारेमा सम्झाउन धेरै समय खर्च गर्छौं ।

What would happen if we spent more time teaching ourselves?

बरु हामी आफैंलाई सिकाउन समय खर्च गरे, कसो होला ?

We could reject all the ideas that make us so suspicious of each other.

एक अर्का प्रति ससंकित हुने मनाशिकताबाट हामीलाइ मुक्ति मिल्दछ ।

हामी परिवर्तनको कारण बन्न सक्छौ ।
