to enunciation and diction

ကျွန်မအနေနဲ့ ဘာမှကို စဉ်းတောင်စဉ်းစားမနေဘဲ

I don't even think of it

ပီပီသသ လေယူလေသိမ်း ကောင်းကောင်းနဲ့ ပြောဆိုတတ်ခြင်းပါပဲ။

‘Cause I’m "articulate"

အကြောင်းခံက "ကျွန်မဟာ ပီပီသသ ရွတ်ဆိုတတ်လို့ပါ။"

So when my professor asks a question

ဒါကြောင့် ကျွန်မ ပါမောက္ခက မေးခွန်းတစ်ခုမေးတဲ့အခါ

And my answer is tainted with a connotation

ကျွန်မအဖြေကဟာ မြို့ပြပုံစံပေါက်နေတဲ့ အကြံပြုချက်တွေရဲ့

of urbanized suggestion

သွယ်ဝိုက်တဲ့အနက်တစ်ခု အရိပ်အယောင် စွန်းထင်းနေတာပေါ့။

There’s no misdirected intention

ချော်တောငေါ့တဲ့ ရည်ရွယ်ချက်မျိုးမရှိပါဘူး။

Pay attention

ဂရုစိုက်နားထောင်ဖို့ပါ။

‘Cause I’m “articulate”

My “articulate” answer never goes amiss

I say “father, this is the impending problem at hand”

လက်တစ်ကမ်းမှာ ရှိနေတဲ့ ပြဿနာပါ"လို့ ပြောလိုက်ပါတယ်။

And when I’m on the block

နောက်ပြီး ကျွန်မဟာ ကိုယ်ရပ်ကွက်ထဲကို ရောက်တဲ့အခါမှာ

I switch it up just because I can

ကျွန်မ ခလုတ်ကို ပြောင်းလိုက်တာပဲလေ။ ကျွန်မကတတ်နိူင်တာကိုး။

So when my boy says, “What’s good with you son?”

ဒါနဲ့ ကျွန်မကောင်လေးက "မင်းက မင်းသားနဲ့ရော အဆင်ပြေရဲ့လား"လို့မေးတယ်။

I just say, “I jus’ fall out wit dem people but I done!”

ကျွန်မပြောလိုက်တာလေးက "ငါသူတို့နဲ့ စကားများခဲ့တယ်။ ဒါပေမဲ့ အပြတ်ရှင်းပစ်လိုက်ပြီ။"လို့လေ။

And sometimes in class

နောက်ပြီး တစ်ခါတစ်ရံ စာသင်ခန်းထဲမှာပေါ့၊

I might pause the intellectual sounding flow to ask

ပညာတတ်သံပေါက်နေတဲ့ ဟန်ပန်ကို ခဏလောက်ရပ်နားပြီး မေးကောင်းမေးမိမှာကတော့

“Yo! Why dese books neva be about my peoples”

"ဟေ့၊ ဘာဖြစ်လို့ ဒီစာအုပ်တွေမှာ ငါတို့လူမျိုးတွေအကြောင်း ထည့်မရေးရတာတုန်း။"

Yes, I have decided to treat

ဟုတ်ပါတယ်ရှင်။ ကျွန်မရဲ့ ဘာသာစကား

all three of my languages as equals

Now you may think that it is ignorant to speak broken English

But I’m here to tell you that even “articulate” Americans

ဒါပေမဲ့ ဒီမှာ ကျွန်မပြောမယ်၊ ပီပီသသရွတ်ဆိုနိူင်ပါတယ်ဆိုတဲ့ အမေရိကန်တွေတောင်မှပဲ

sound foolish to the British

ဗြိတိသျှတွေအတွက်တော့ အမိုက်အမဲပုံပေါက်နေတာပါ။

So when my Professor comes on the block and says, “Hello”

ဒါကြောင့် ကျွန်မရဲ့ ပါမောက္ခ ဝင်လာတဲ့အခါမှာ "ဟယ်လို"လို့ သူကပြောပါတယ်။

I stop him and say “Noooo …

ကျွန်မက သူ့ကိုတားပြီး ပြောလိုက်တာက "နိူး........"လို့ပါ။

You’re being inarticulate …

ရှင်တို့ဟာ ဗလုံးဗထွေးနဲ့ ဖြစ်နေပါတယ်။....

the proper way is to say ‘what’s good’”

ဘာကောင်းတာလဲဆိုတာကို နည်းစနစ်တကျ ပြောဆိုတတ်ဖို့ပါ။

Now you may think that’s too hood, that’s not cool

ရှင်တို့တွေက ဒါကို အရမ်းကြီးကို စရိုက်ကျလွန်းတယ်လို့ ထင်ကောင်းထင်မိကြမှာပါ။ ဒါကတော့သိပ်မမိုက်လှပါဘူးရှင်။

But I’m here to tell you that even our language has rules

So when Mommy mocks me and says

“ya’ll-be-madd-going-to-the-store”

"နင်က စတိုးဆိုင်ကို အသေသွားချင်နေမှာပေါ့"လို့ သရော်ပြီး ပြောတဲ့အခါ

I say “Mommy, no, that sentence is not following the law

ကျွန်မပြောလိုက်တာက "မေမေရေ၊ မဟုတ်ဘူး။ အဲဒီစာကြောင်းက ဥပဒေသအတိုင်း မလိုက်ဘူး"လို့ပါ။

Never does the word "madd" go before a present participle

madd ဆိုတဲ့စကားလုံးဟာ ပစ္စက္ခ ကြိယာပုဒ်စု ရှေ့မှာ ဘယ်တော့မှ မသုံးဘူးလေ။

That’s simply the principle of this English”

ဒါက ဒီအင်္ဂလိပ်စာရဲ့ အခြေခံမူ သက်သက်ပဲလေ။

If I had the vocal capacity I would

ကျွန်မမှာ အသံပိုင်းဆိုင်ရာ အစွမ်းအစအပြည့်အဝရှိနေလို့ကတော့

sing this from every mountaintop,

တောင်တွေတိုင်းရဲ့ထိပ်ဖျားကို တက်ပြီးတော့ကို သီချင်းဆိုမှာပေါ့။

From every suburbia, and every hood

ဆင်ခြေဖုံးနေရာတွေတိုင်းကနေပေါ့၊ ပြီးတော့ အိမ်နီးနာခြင်းနေရာတွေကရောပေါ့။

‘Cause the only God of language is the one recorded in the Genesis

Of this world saying “it is good"

So I may not always come before you

with excellency of speech

အမြဲတမ်းတော့ ရောက်လာချင်မှရောက်လာမှာပါ။

But do not judge me by my language and assume

ဒါပေမဲ့ ကျွန်မရဲ့ ဘာသာစကားကိုကြည့်ပြီး ကျွန်မကို အကဲ မဖြတ်ကြပါနဲ့ဦး၊

That I’m too ignorant to teach

ပြီးတော့ ကျွန်မဟာ သင်ကြားပေးဖို့အတွက် အရမ်းကြီးကိုပဲ ပညာမဲ့တယ်လို့လည်း မထင်မြင်ကြပါနဲ့။

‘Cause I speak three tongues

Home, school and friends

I’m a tri-lingual orator

Sometimes I’m consistent with my language now

Then switch it up so I don’t bore later

Sometimes I fight back two tongues

While I use the other one in the classroom

because mines was stolen

ကျွန်မ ဘာသာစကားက အခိုးခံလိုက်ရတာကိုး။

But you can’t expect me to speak your history wholly

ဒါပေမဲ့ ကျွန်မဘာသာစကားက ပျက်ပြားသွားတဲ့အခိုက်မှာ ကျွန်မကို

while mines is broken

These words are spoken

ဒီစကားလုံးတွေကို

By someone who is simply fed up with

ဒီရာသီရဲ့ ဥရောပဗဟိုပြုစံတွေကို တကယ်ကို စိတ်ကုန်နေတဲ့

the Eurocentric ideals of this season

တစ်စုံတစ်ယောက်က ပြောနေတာပါ။

And the reason I speak a composite version of your language

ပြီးတော့ ရှင်တို့ရဲ့ ဘာသာစကားကို စုပေါင်းစပ်ပေါင်းပြုထားတဲ့ ပုံစံတစ်ခုနဲ့ ပြောနေတဲ့ အကြောင်းပြချက်ကတော့

Is because mines was raped away along with my history

ကျွန်ဘာသာစကားက ကျွန်မရဲ့ အတိတ်မှတ်တမ်းနဲ့အတူ ဖျက်စီးခံလိုက်ရလို့ပါ။

I speak broken English so the profusing gashes can remind us

ကျွန်မ မတောက်တခေါက် အင်္ဂလိပ်စာကို ပြောတာက ဟက်တက်ကွဲ ဒဏ်ရာတွေက ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ လက်ရှိအခြေအနေဟာ

That our current state is not a mystery

I’m so tired of the negative images that are driving my people mad

So unless you’ve seen it rob a bank stop calling my hair bad

How can you expect me to treat their imprint on your language

ရှင်တို့တွေရဲ့ ဘာသာစကားပေါ်က ဒါတွေရဲ့ အရာထင်မှုဆိုတာကို သုံးသပ်ဝေဖန်ဖို့ဆိုတာကို ကျွန်မဆီက ဘယ်လိုမျှော်လင့်လို့ ရနိူင်မှာလဲ။

As anything less than equal

ဘာမဆိုက ညီမျှမှုရှိတယ်ဆိုတာထက်ကို လျော့နည်းနေသရွေ့ပေါ့။

Let there be no confusion

အဲဒီမှာ စိတ်ရှုပ်ထွေးစရာတွေ မရှိပါစေနဲ့တော့။

Let there be no hesitation

အဲဒီမှာ ချီတုံချတုံဖြစ်စရာတွေ မရှိပါစေနဲ့တော့။

This is not a promotion of ignorance

မသိနားမလည်ခြင်းဆိုတာတွေကို မြှင့်တင်ပေးတာတော့မဟုတ်ဘူးနော်။

This is a linguistic celebration

ဒါဟာ ဘာသာစကားဆိုင်ရာ အောင်ပွဲခံခြင်းတစ်ခုပါ။

That’s why I put "tri-lingual" on my last job application

I can help to diversify your consumer market
