For years I've been feeling frustrated,

because as a religious historian,

I've become acutely aware

of the centrality of compassion

in all the major world faiths.

Every single one of them

၎င်းတို့ တစ်ခုချင်းစီမှာ

has evolved their own version

ရွှေစည်းမျဉ်းလို့ခေါ်ခဲ့တာရဲ့

of what's been called the Golden Rule.

၎င်းတို့ ကိုယ်ပိုင်ခံယူချက်ကို ပေါ်ပေါက်လာခဲ့ပါတယ်။

Sometimes it comes in a positive version --

တစ်ခါတစ်လေ အပြုသဘော အဆိုတစ်ခုပါဝင်တာက

"Always treat all others as you'd like to be treated yourself."

"သင့်ကို ပြုမူစေချင်သလို အခြားသူများကို အမြဲ ပြုမူပါ။"

And equally important

အလားတူ အရေးပါတာက

is the negative version --

ဆန့်ကျင်တဲ့ အဆိုပါ

"Don't do to others what you would not like them to do to you."

"သင့်အပေါ် သူတစ်ပါးမလုပ်စေချင်တာကို သူတစ်ပါးအား မလုပ်ပါနဲ့"တဲ့။

Look into your own heart,

သင့်ကိုယ်ပိုင် နှလုံးသားထဲ ဝင်ကြည့်ပါ၊

discover what it is that gives you pain

သင့်ကို နာကျင်မှုပေးတာကို ရှာဖွေပြီး

and then refuse, under any circumstance whatsoever,

အခြားသူတစ်ဦးအပေါ် ဒီနာကျင်မှု ပေးဖြစ်ဖို့ကို

to inflict that pain on anybody else.

ဘယ်အခြေအနေမှာဖြစ်ဖြစ် ငြင်းဆိုပါ။

And people have emphasized the importance of compassion,

not just because it sounds good,

but because it works.

People have found that when they have

implemented the Golden Rule

Confucius မိန့်ခဲ့သလို

as Confucius said, "all day and every day,"

ရွှေစည်းမျဉ်းကို အကောင်အတည်ဖော်တဲ့အခါ

not just a question of doing your good deed for the day

တစ်နေ့တာအတွက် ကောင်းမှုလုပ်ပြီး

and then returning to a life of greed

and egotism,

but to do it all day and every day,

you dethrone yourself from the center of your world,

put another there, and you transcend yourself.

And it brings you into the presence

ဒါက သင့်ကို ဘုရားသခင်၊ နိဗ္ဗာန်၊ ရာမ၊

of what's been called God, Nirvana, Rama, Tao.

တောက်လို့ ဆိုကြတာရဲ့ ရှေ့မှောက်ကို သင့်ကို ဆောင်ကြဉ်းပေးတယ်။

Something that goes beyond

အတ္တ ပိတ်ဆီးထားတဲ့ ဖြစ်တည်မှုထဲက

what we know in our ego-bound existence.

ကျွန်မတို့သိတာရဲ့ ဟိုမှာဘက်ကို သွားတဲ့ တစ်စုံတစ်ရာပါ။

But you know you'd never know it a lot of the time,

ဒါပေမဲ့ ဘာသာရေး ဘဝကို အရမ်း ဗဟိုပြုတာကို

that this was so central to the religious life.

အချိန်တော်တော်များများမှာ သင်လုံးဝမသိဘူး ဆိုတာ သင်သိပါတယ်။

Because with a few wonderful exceptions,

အကြောင်းက အနည်းငယ်သော အံ့ဖွယ် ခြွင်းချက်တွေရှိပေမဲ့

very often when religious people come together,

religious leaders come together, they're arguing about abstruse doctrines

or uttering a council of hatred

or inveighing against homosexuality or something of that sort.

Often people don't really want to be compassionate.

မကြာခဏတော့ လူတွေဟာ ကရုဏာ စိတ်မဖြစ်ချင်ဘူး။

I sometimes see

တစ်ခါတစ်ရံ မြင်မိတာက

when I'm speaking to a congregation of religious people

ဘာသာရေးသမားတွေရဲ့ ဝတ်ပြုတဲ့လူစုတစ်စုကို ကျွန်မ ပြောဆိုနေတဲ့အခါ

a sort of mutinous expression crossing their faces

သူတို့ရဲ့ မျက်နှာတွေမှာသန်းနေတဲ့ ဖီဆန်တဲ့ အသွင်အပြင်တစ်ခုပါ၊

because people often want to be right instead.

အကြောင်းက ဒီအစား လူတွေဟာ မကြာခဏ တော့ သူတို့ပဲ မှန်ချင်ကြတာလေ။

And that of course defeats the object of the exercise.

ဒါက တကယ်တော့ လေ့ကျင့်မှုရဲ့ ဦ။တည်ချက်ကို အနိုင်ယူလိုက်တာပါ။

Now why was I so grateful to TED?

ကဲ ဘာလို့ TED ကို ကျွန်မ ကျေးဇူးအရမ်းတင်လဲ

Because they took me very gently

from my book-lined study

and brought me into the 21st century,

enabling me to speak to a much, much wider audience

than I could have ever conceived.

Because I feel an urgency about this.

If we don't manage to implement

ဘယ်နေရာ၊ ဘယ်သူဘယ်ဝါဖြစ်ဖြစ် လူတိုင်းကို

the Golden Rule globally,

ကျွန်မတို့ကိုယ်တိုင်လို ပြုမူဆက်ဆံဖို့၊

so that we treat all peoples, wherever and whoever they may be,

သူတို့ဟာ ကျွန်မတို့ကိုယ်တိုင်လိုပဲ အရေးပါတယ်ဆိုသလိုမျိုးဖြစ်အောင်

as though they were as important as ourselves,

ရွှေစည်းမျဉ်းကို ကမ္ဘာအနှံ အကောင် အထည်ဖော်ဖို့ မလုပ်နိုင်ရင်

I doubt that we'll have

နောက်မျိုးဆက်ကို လက်ကမ်းဖို့

a viable world to hand on to the next generation.

လာခြင်းကောင်းတဲ့ ကမ္ဘာတစ်ခုရှိမယ်ဆိုတာ သံသယရှိပါတယ်။

The task of our time,

ကျွန်မတို့ အချိန်ရဲ့ လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်၊

one of the great tasks of our time,

ကျွန်မတို့အချိန်ရဲ့ ကြီးကျယ်တဲ့ လုပ်ဆောင် မှုတစ်ခုက

is to build a global society, as I said,

ကမ္ဘာ့လူ့အဖွဲ့အစည်းတစ်ခု တည်ဆောက်ဖို့ပါ၊

where people can live together in peace.

ကျွန်မပြောခဲ့သလို လူတွေအတူစုပြီး ငြိမ်းချမ်းစွာ နေထိုင်ရာပါ။

And the religions that should be making a major contribution

အဓိက ထည့််ဝင်ထောက်ပံမှုပြုသင့်တဲ့ ဘာသာတရားတွေ ဟာ အဲဒီအစား

are instead seen as part of the problem.

ပြသနာရဲ့ အစိတ်အပိုင်းလို့ အမြင်ခံရတယ်။

And of course it's not just religious people who believe in the Golden Rule.

တကယ်တမ်းတော့ ရွှေစည်မျဉ်းကို ယုံကြည်တဲ့ ဘာသာရေးသမားတွေပဲ မဟုတ်ပါဘူး။

This is the source of all morality,

ဒါဟာ သေဆုံးမှုရဲ့ အရင်းအမြစ်၊

this imaginative act of empathy,

မျှဝေခံစားခြင်းရဲ့ ဒီစိတ်ကူးဉာဏ်ရှိတဲ့ လုပ်ရပ်

putting yourself in the place of another.

သင်ကိုယ်တိုင် အခြားသူနေရာမှာ ဝင်ခြင်းပါ။

And so we have a choice, it seems to me.

ဒီတော့ ကျွန်မတို့မှာ ရွေးချယ်မှုတစ်ခု ရှိတယ် ကျွန်မ အမြင်ပေါ့။

We can either go on bringing out or emphasizing

ကျွန်မတို့ ယုံကြည်မှုရဲ့ တစ်ယူသန်ပြီး သဘောထားသေးတဲ့ ရှုထောင့်တွေကို

the dogmatic and intolerant aspects of our faith,

ဆက်လက်ဖော်ထုတ်တာ (သို့) အလေးပေးတာလုပ်နိုင်တယ်၊

or we can go back to

ဒါမှမဟုတ် ရှေးပိုကျတဲ့ ယေရှုနဲ့ခေတ်ပြိုင်

the rabbis. Rabbi Hillel, the older contemporary of Jesus,

ဂျူးဓမ္မဆရာ Rabbi Hillel ဆီပြန်သွားနိုင်ပါတယ်၊

who, when asked by a pagan

ဗာဟီရဝါဒီတစ်ဦးက သူ့ကို ခြေတစ်ချောင်းတည်းရပ်နေတုန်း

to sum up the whole of Jewish teaching while he stood on one leg,

ဂျူးဘာသာ အဆုံးအမတစ်ခုလုံးကို အနှစ်ချုပ်ဖို့မေးတဲ့အခါ

said, "That which is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor.

"သင့်ကို မနှစ်သက်ဖွယ်ဖြစ်ရာကို သင့်အိမ်နီးနားချင်းကို မလုပ်လေနဲ့၊

That is the Torah and everything else is only commentary."

ဒါဟာ ဘုရားသခင်ရဲ့ ဥပဒေသဖြစ်ပြီး ဒိပြင် အားလုံးက ရှင်းလင်းချက်တွေပဲ"လို့ပြောသူပါ။

And the rabbis and the early fathers of the church who said that

ဂျူးဓမ္မဆရာနဲ့ ခရစ်ယာန် ဘုရားကျောင်းရဲ့ ရှေးဦး ဖခင်တွေပြောတာက

any interpretation of scripture

အမုန်းနဲ့ မထီမဲ့မြင်ပြုမှုပွားစေတဲ့

that bred hatred and disdain was illegitimate.

သမ္မာကျမ်းရဲ့ ဘယ်အဓိပ္ပါယ်ပြန်ဆိုချက်မဆို တရားမဝင်ဘူးတဲ့။

And we need to revive that spirit.

ဒီစိတ်ဓာတ်ကို ပြန်လည်ရှင်သန်အောင် လုပ်ဖို့လိုပါတယ်။

And it's not just going to happen

ချစ်မေတ္တာစိတ်က ကျွန်မတို့ကို

because a spirit of love wafts us down.

ငွေ့ငွေ့လေးသန်းသွားရုံနဲ့တော့ ဖြစ်လာမှာမဟုတ်ဘူး။

We have to make this happen,

ဒါကို ဖြစ်အောင် လုပ်ဖို့လို့ပြီး

and we can do it

ဒါကို TED က မိတ်ဆက်ပေးထားတဲ့

with the modern communications

ခေတ်မီ ဆက်သွယ်ရေးတွေနဲ့

that TED has introduced.

လုပ်နိုင်တယ်လေ။

Already I've been tremendously heartened

ပူပေါင်းပါဝင်သူတွေရဲ့ တုံ့ပြန်မှုမှာ

at the response of all our partners.

ကျွန်မ အံ့မခန်းကို အားတက်နှင့်ပါပြီ။

In Singapore, we have a group

စင်္ကာပူမှာ စင်္ကာပူ လူ့အဖွဲ့အစည်းမှာ

going to use the Charter to heal divisions

မကြာခင်ကမှ မှိုလိုပေါက်လာတဲ့ ကွဲပြားမှုတွေကို ကုစားဖို့

recently that have sprung up in Singaporean society,

ပဋိညာဉ်စာတမ်းကို သုံးကြတော့မယ့် အဖွဲ့တစ်ဖွဲ့ ကျွန်မတို့မှာ ရှိပြီး

and some members of the parliament want

တစ်ချို့ ပါလီမန် အဖွဲ့ဝင်တွေက ဒါကို နိုင်ငံရေးအရ

to implement it politically.

အကောင်အထည်ဖော်ချင်ကြတယ်။

In Malaysia, there is going to be an art exhibition

မလေးရှားမှာ ပန်းချီပြပွဲ တစ်ခုဖြစ်တော့မယ်၊

in which leading artists are going to be

အဲဒီမှာ အထင်ကရ အနုပညာရှင်တွေဟာ

taking people, young people,

လူတွေ၊ လူငယ်တွေကို ခေါ်ပြီး

and showing them that compassion also lies

ကရုဏာတရားဟာလည်း အနုပညာအားလုံးရဲ့

at the root of all art.

ရင်းမြစ်မှာ ကိန်းအောင်းတာကို သူတို့ကို ပြသပါတော့မယ်။

Throughout Europe, the Muslim communities

ဥရောပတစ်လျှောက်မှာ မွတ်ဆလင် အသိုင်းအဝိုင်းတွေဟာ

are holding events and discussions,

ပွဲတွေနဲ့ ဆွေးနွေးပွဲတွေကျင်းပနေပြီး

are discussing the centrality of compassion

အစ္စလမ်နဲ့ ဘာသာတရားအားလုံးမှာ ကရုဏာတရားရဲ့

in Islam and in all faiths.

ဗဟိုကျမှုအကြောင်း ဆွေးနွေးနေတယ်။

But it can't stop there. It can't stop with the launch.

ဒါပေမဲ့ ဒီမှာ ရပ်လို့မရပါဘူး။ စတာနဲ့ ရပ်လို့မရပါဘူး။

Religious teaching, this is where we've gone so wrong,

ဘာသာရေး သွန်သင်မှု၊ ဒါက ကျွန်မတို့ အတော်ကို မှားခဲ့တဲ့နေရာဟာ

concentrating solely on believing abstruse doctrines.

နက်နဲတဲ့ အယူဝါဒတွေအပေါ် ယုံကြည်တာကို လုံးဝ အာရုံစိုက်နေခြင်းပါ။

Religious teaching must always lead to action.

ဘာသာရေး သွန်သင်မှုဟာ အမြဲတမ်း လုပ်ဆောင်မှုဆီ ဦးတည်ရမှာပါ။

And I intend to work on this till my dying day.

ဒါကို သေခါနီး နေ့အထိ လုပ်ဆောင်ဖို့ ကျွန်မ ရည်ရွယ်ထားတယ်။

And I want to continue with our partners

ကျွန်မရဲ့ ပူးပေါင်းသူတွေနဲ့ အရာနှစ်ခုကို

to do two things --

ဆက်လက် လုပ်ချင်ပါတယ်။

educate and stimulate compassionate thinking.

ပညာပေးဖို့နဲ့ စာနာတတ်တဲ့ တွေးခေါ်ခြင်းကို နှိုးဆော်ပေးဖို့ပါ။

Education because we've so

ပညာပေးခြင်းက ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ ကရုဏာတရားကနေ

dropped out of compassion.

အတော် ဖယ်ခွာထားလို့ပါ။

People often think it simply means

လူတွေ မကြာခဏ တွေးတာက ဒါက လူတစ်ယောက်အတွက်

feeling sorry for somebody.

စိတ်မကောင်းဖြစ်တာပဲလို့ပါ။

But of course you don't understand compassion

ဒါပေမဲ့ တကယ်တမ်းက ဒီအကြောင်း တွေးနေတော့မယ်ပဲဆိုရင်

if you're just going to think about it.

ကရုဏာတရားကို သင်တို့ နားမလည်ပါဘူး။

You also have to do it.

ဒါကို လုပ်ဖို့လည်း လိုတယ်လေ။

I want them to get the media involved

သူတို့ကို မီဒီယာတွေနဲ့ ပတ်သက်စေချင်ပါတယ်၊

because the media are crucial

အကြောင်းက မီဒီယာဟာ အခြားသူတွေနဲ့ပတ်သက်ပြီး

in helping to dissolve some of the stereotypical views

ကျွန်မတို့မှာ ရှိတဲ့ သမားရိုးကျအမြင် တစ်ချို့ကို

we have of other people,

ပပျောက်ဖို့ ကူညီရေးမှာ အရေးပါလို့ပါ။

which are dividing us from one another.

ဒါတွေက အချင်းချင်းကို ခွဲခြားနေတယ်။

The same applies to educators.

ပညာပေးသူတွေနဲ့ရော အလားတူ သက်ဆိုင်ပါတယ်။

I'd like youth to get a sense of

ကျွန်မ လူငယ်တွေကို

the dynamism, the dynamic and challenge

ကရုဏာကြီးထားတဲ့ ဘဝဟန်တစ်ခုရဲ့ စွမ်းအား၊ အင်အားနဲ့

of a compassionate lifestyle.

စိန်ခေါ်မှုသဘောကို ရစေချင်ပါတယ်။

And also see that it demands acute intelligence,

နောက် မြင်မိသေးတာက ၎င်းဟာ ထက်မြက်တဲ့ ဉာဏ်ရည်ကို တောင်းဆိုပြီး

not just a gooey feeling.

သွဲ့နွဲ့တဲ့ ခံစားချက်ပဲ မဟုတ်တာပါ။

I'd like to call upon scholars to explore

သူတို့ကိုယ်ပိုင်နဲ့ အခြားသူတွေရဲ့ အစဉ်အလာတွေထဲမှာ

the compassionate theme

ကရုဏာထားတဲ့ အကြောင်းအရာကို

in their own and in other people's traditions.

စူစမ်းကြဖို့ ပညာရှင်တွေကို ပန်ကြားချင်ပါတယ်။

And perhaps above all,

ဖြစ်နိုင်တာက အဆိုပါအချက်တွေထက်

to encourage a sensitivity about

ကရုဏာမထားတဲ့ ပြောဆိုခြင်းအကြောင်း

uncompassionate speaking,

အထိမခံနိုင်တာကို အားပေးဖို့ပါ။

so that because people have this Charter,

အကြောင်းက ဒီပဋိဉာဉ် ရှိတဲ့ လူတွေဟာ

whatever their beliefs or lack of them,

ဘာယုံကြည်မှုဖြစ်ဖြစ်၊ ဒါတွေမရှိတာဖြစ်ဖြစ်

they feel empowered

သူတို့ရဲ့ ဘာသာရေးခေါင်းဆောင်တွေ၊

to challenge uncompassionate speech,

နိုင်ငံရေးခေါင်းဆောင်တွေ၊ လုပ်ငန်း ခေါင်းဆောင်တွေဆီက

disdainful remarks

ကရုဏာမထားတဲ့ စကား၊

from their religious leaders, their political leaders,

မထေမဲ့မြင် ဝေဖန်ချက်ကို စိန်ခေါ်ဖို့

from the captains of industry.

လုပ်ပိုင်ခွင့်ရှိတာ ခံစားမိစေဖို့ပါ။

Because we can change the world,

ကျွန်မတို့ ကမ္ဘာကို ပြောင်းလဲနိုင်လို့ပါ၊

we have the ability.

ကျွန်မတို့မှာ အစွမ်းရှိတယ်လေ။

I would never have thought of putting the Charter online.

ပဋိဉာဉ်စာတမ်းကို အွန်လိုင်းတင်ဖို့ တစ်ခါမှ စဉ်းစားမိမှာမဟုတ်ဘူး

I was still stuck in the old world

အခန်းတစ်ခန်းထဲမှာ စုထိုင်နေပြီး

of a whole bunch of boffins sitting together in a room

လာမယ့် နောက်ထပ် လျှို့ဝှက်ဆန်းကြယ် အဆိုပြုချက် ထုတ်ပြန်နေတဲ့

and issuing yet another arcane statement.

သိပ္ပံပညာရှင်သုတေသီတစ်ခုရဲ့ ကမ္ဘာဟောင်းမှာ ကျွန်မ ပိတ်မိနေဆဲပါ။

And TED introduced me to a whole new way

TED ကနေပြီး ကျွန်မကို တွေးခေါ်ခြင်းနဲ့ စိတ်ကူးတွေကို တင်ပြခြင်း

of thinking and presenting ideas.

အသစ်စက်စက် နည်းတစ်ခုကို မိတ်ဆက်ပေးခဲ့တယ်။

Because that is what is so wonderful about TED.

ဒါက TED ရဲ့ အရမ်း အံ့ဖွယ်ကောင်းတဲ့အရာ ဖြစ်လို့ပါ။

In this room, all this expertise,

ဒီအခန်းထဲမှာ ဒီကျွမ်းကျင်မှုအားလုံး

if we joined it all together,

we could change the world.

And of course the problems sometimes seem insuperable.

But I'd just like to quote, finish at the end

with a reference to a British author, an Oxford author

ကျွန်မ ကိုးကားလေ့သိပ်မရှိတဲ့

whom I don't quote very often,

ဗြိတိသျှ စာရေးဆရာ၊ Oxford စာရေးဆရာ

C.S. Lewis.

But he wrote one thing that stuck in my mind

ဒါပေမဲ့ ကျွန်မ ကျောင်းသူဘဝကနေ ဖတ်ခဲ့ကတည်းက

ever since I read it when I was a schoolgirl.

စိတ်ထဲမှာ စွဲနေတာတစ်ခုတော့ သူရေးခဲ့တယ်။

It's in his book "The Four Loves."

He said that he distinguished between erotic love,

And then he compared that to friendship,

ဒီနောက်မှာ ဒါကို ခင်မင်မှုနဲ့ နှိုင်းယှဉ်ပြတာက

when two people stand side by side, as it were, shoulder to shoulder,

တူညီတဲ့ ရည်ရွယ်ချက်တစ်ခုကို စိုက်ကြည့်နေတဲ့ မျက်လုံးတွေနဲ့

with their eyes fixed on a common goal.

လူနှစ်ဦး ဘေးချင်းကပ်ရပ်နေတာ၊ အဲလိုမျိုး ပခုံးချင်းယှဉ်ရပ်နေတဲ့အခါပါ။

We don't have to fall in love with each other,

အချင်းချင်း ချစ်ကြိုက်ဖို့ မလိုပါဘူး၊

but we can become friends.

ဒါပေမဲ့ မိတ်ဆွေတော့ ဖြစ်လို့ရတယ်လေ။

And I am convinced.

ကျွန်မ ဘဝင်ကျမိတာက

I felt it very strongly

Vevey မှာ ကျွန်တို့ရဲ့ ချင့်ချိန်တဲ့ ဆွေးနွေးမှုလေးအတွင်းမှာ

during our little deliberations at Vevey,

ပြင်းထန်စွာ ခံစားမိလိုက်တာပါ။

that when people of all different persuasions

မတူညီတဲ့ ဂိုဏ်းဂဏအားလုံးကလူတွေ အတူစုဝေးပြီး

come together, working side by side

တူညီတဲ့ ရည်ရွယ်ချက်တစ်ခုအတွက်

for a common goal,

ဘေးချင်းယှဉ်ပြီး လုပ်ဆောင်နေတုန်းမှာ

differences melt away.

ကွဲပြားမှုတွေ ပျောက်ကွယ်သွားခဲ့တာပါ။

And we learn amity.

ချစ်ကြည်မှုကို ကျွန်မတို့ သိလိုက်ရတယ်၊

And we learn to live together and to get to know one another.

အတူတကွ နေထိုင်ဖို့နဲ့ အချင်းချင်း သိကျွမ်းဖို့ သိလိုက်ရတယ်လေ။
