For years I've been feeling frustrated,

I've become acutely aware

Every single one of them

has evolved their own version

of what's been called the Golden Rule.

Sometimes it comes in a positive version --

কখনও এটা আসে ইতিবাচক রুপে --

"Always treat all others as you'd like to be treated yourself."

“অন্যদের সঙ্গে এমন আচরণ কর, যেমনটা তুমি নিজের ক্ষেত্রে প্রত্যাশা কর।”

And equally important

আর সমানভাবে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ

is the negative version --

এটার নেতিবাচক রুপটাও--

"Don't do to others what you would not like them to do to you."

“কারও সঙ্গে এমন কিছু করো না যেটা তুমি চাও না যে, কেউ তোমার সঙ্গে করুক।”

Look into your own heart,

নিজেকে জিজ্ঞাসা করে

discover what it is that gives you pain

খুঁজে বের কর যে, কোন জিনিসগুলো তোমাকে যন্ত্রণা দেয়

and then refuse, under any circumstance whatsoever,

আর তারপর কোন পরিস্থিতিতেই সেই জিনিসগুলো করো না,

to inflict that pain on anybody else.

যা অন্যদের জন্যও যন্ত্রণা বয়ে আনবে।

And people have emphasized the importance of compassion,

আর মানুষ সবসময়ই সমবেদনার এই ধারণার গুরুত্বের উপর জোর দিয়েছেন।

not just because it sounds good,

শুধু একারণে না যে, এটা শুনতে ভালো লাগে।

but because it works.

বরং এটা সত্যিই কাজে লাগে।

People have found that when they have

মানুষ দেখেছে যে, যখন তারা

implemented the Golden Rule

এই স্বর্ণালী বিধির প্রয়োগ ঘটায়,

as Confucius said, "all day and every day,"

যেমনটা কনফুসিয়াস বলেছেন, ‘প্রতিদিন ও প্রতিটা সময়’,

not just a question of doing your good deed for the day

and then returning to a life of greed

আর তারপর ফিরে গেলেন লোভসর্বস্ব-

and egotism,

but to do it all day and every day,

বরং এই স্বর্ণালী বিধির প্রয়োগ যদি প্রতিটা সময়ই করা যায়,

you dethrone yourself from the center of your world,

তাহলে আপনি আপনার দুনিয়ার কেন্দ্র থেকে নিজেকে সরিয়ে নিতে পারবেন।

put another there, and you transcend yourself.

আপনি নিজের সীমা ছাড়িয়ে যেতে পারবেন।

And it brings you into the presence

আর এটাই আপনাকে নিয়ে আসবে,

of what's been called God, Nirvana, Rama, Tao.

যাকে আমরা ডাকি ঈশ্বর-নির্বান-রাম-তাও প্রভৃতি নামে, তার সান্নিধ্যে।

Something that goes beyond

এটা এমন এক অভিজ্ঞতা যা

what we know in our ego-bound existence.

But you know you'd never know it a lot of the time,

that this was so central to the religious life.

Because with a few wonderful exceptions,

very often when religious people come together,

religious leaders come together, they're arguing about abstruse doctrines

or inveighing against homosexuality or something of that sort.

Often people don't really want to be compassionate.

I sometimes see

আমি এধরণের ধর্মীয় মানুষদের সমাবেশে

when I'm speaking to a congregation of religious people

কথা বলার সময় মাঝেমধ্যে তাদের মুখে

a sort of mutinous expression crossing their faces

because people often want to be right instead.

And that of course defeats the object of the exercise.

And that of course defeats the object of the exercise.

Now why was I so grateful to TED?

Because they took me very gently

from my book-lined study

and brought me into the 21st century,

Because I feel an urgency about this.

If we don't manage to implement

the Golden Rule globally,

প্রয়োগ করার সুযোগ না পাই,

so that we treat all peoples, wherever and whoever they may be,

আমরা যদি সব মানুষকেই (সে যেই হোক না কেন)

as though they were as important as ourselves,

আমাদের নিজেদের মতোই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বলে বিবেচনা করতে না পারি,

I doubt that we'll have

তাহলে আমার সন্দেহ হয় যে আমরা

a viable world to hand on to the next generation.

আদৌ আমাদের পরবর্তী প্রজন্মের কাছে একটা ক্রমবিকাশমান দুনিয়া রেখে যেতে পারব কিনা।

The task of our time,

আমাদের সময়ের কাজটা,

one of the great tasks of our time,

আমাদের সময়ের সবচেয়ে বড় কাজটা হচ্ছে,

is to build a global society, as I said,

এমন একটা বৈশ্বিক সমাজ প্রতিষ্ঠা করা,

where people can live together in peace.

যেখানে (আমি যেমনটা বলেছি) সব মানুষ একসঙ্গে শান্তিতে থাকতে পারবে।

And the religions that should be making a major contribution

আর এই কাজে ধর্মীয় প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলোর যেখানে একটা বড় অবদান রাখার কথা,

are instead seen as part of the problem.

সেখানে তারা আবির্ভূত হচ্ছে একটা সমস্যা হিসেবে।

And of course it's not just religious people who believe in the Golden Rule.

আর অবশ্যই স্বর্ণালী বিধিতে যারা বিশ্বাস করে তাঁরা শুধুই ধর্মীয় মানুষ নন।

This is the source of all morality,

সকল নৈতিকতার উত্স হচ্ছে

this imaginative act of empathy,

সহানুভূতির এই মনোকল্পিত কর্মকাণ্ডটা।

putting yourself in the place of another.

নিজের জায়গায় অন্য একজনকে স্থাপন করা।

And so we have a choice, it seems to me.

আর তাই আমার মনে হয়, আমাদের কাছে সুযোগ আছে বেছে নেওয়ার।

We can either go on bringing out or emphasizing

একদিকে আমরা ঝুঁকে পড়তে পারি,

the dogmatic and intolerant aspects of our faith,

আমাদের ধর্মীয় বিশ্বাসের গোঁড়া ও অসহিষ্ণু দিকগুলোর দিকে

or we can go back to

বা ফিরে যেতে পারি

the rabbis. Rabbi Hillel, the older contemporary of Jesus,

সেই রাবাইয়ের কাছে। রাবাই হিল্লেল, যীশু খ্রীষ্টের সমসাময়িক এক ইহুদি নেতা।

who, when asked by a pagan

পাগান ধর্মাবলম্বীরা

to sum up the whole of Jewish teaching while he stood on one leg,

তাঁকে এক পায়ের উপর দাঁড়িয়ে পুরো ইহুদি ধর্মের সারাংশ বলতে বলেছিল।

said, "That which is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor.

তখন তিনি বলেছিলেন, ‘যেটা তোমার কাছে ঘৃণিত, এমন কোন কাজ প্রতিবেশিদের সঙ্গে করো না।

That is the Torah and everything else is only commentary."

এইটাই তোরাহ। বাকি সবকিছু এর বিস্তারিত বর্ণনা।’

And the rabbis and the early fathers of the church who said that

আর এই রাবাই ও চার্চের প্রথমদিকের মানুষেরা বলেছিলেন যে,

any interpretation of scripture

ধর্মগ্রন্থের ঘৃণা ও বিদ্বেষ উত্পাদনকারী

that bred hatred and disdain was illegitimate.

কোন ব্যাখ্যা দেওয়া অনৈতিক।

And we need to revive that spirit.

আমাদের এই চেতনাটাই পুনরুদ্ধার করতে হবে।

And it's not just going to happen

আর এটা এমনি এমনিই হয়ে যাবে না।

because a spirit of love wafts us down.

কারণ এক আওন্ধ ভালবাসা আমাদের একমুখী করে রাখে।

We have to make this happen,

আমাদেরকেই এটা বাস্তবায়ন করতে হবে।

and we can do it

আর আমরা এটা করতেও পারব

with the modern communications

আর যেধরণের আধুনিক যোগাযোগ ব্যবস্থার সঙ্গে

that TED has introduced.

TED পরিচয় করিয়ে দিয়েছে তা দিয়ে।

Already I've been tremendously heartened

ইতিমধ্যেই আমি প্রচণ্ড উত্সাহব্যঞ্জক সাড়া পেয়েছি

at the response of all our partners.

আমাদের সহযোগীদের কাছ থেকে।

In Singapore, we have a group

সিঙ্গাপুরে, আমরা এমন একদল মানুষকে পেয়েছি

going to use the Charter to heal divisions

যাঁরা এই সমবেদনার সনদটি নিয়ে কাজ করছে, তাদের সমাজে উদ্ভুত

recently that have sprung up in Singaporean society,

নানা বিভাজন মোকাবিলা করতে।

and some members of the parliament want

আর সংসদেরও কিছু সদস্য এটাকে

to implement it politically.

প্রয়োগ করতে চেয়েছেন রাজনৈতিকভাবে।

In Malaysia, there is going to be an art exhibition

মালয়েশিয়ায়, একটা শিল্প প্রদর্শণী অনুষ্ঠিত হতে যাচ্ছে,

in which leading artists are going to be

যেখানে প্রধানসারির শিল্পীরা

taking people, young people,

অনেক মানুষের সঙ্গে কথা বলবেন

and showing them that compassion also lies

আর তাদেরকে দেখাবেন যে, সমবেদনার ধারণা

at the root of all art.

আছে সবধরণের শিল্পের গোড়াতেও।

Throughout Europe, the Muslim communities

আর পুরো ইউরোপজুড়ে, মুসলিম সম্প্রদায়

are holding events and discussions,

নানা ধরণের অনুষ্ঠান, আলোচনা সভার আয়োজন করছেন,

are discussing the centrality of compassion

যেখানে তারা বলছেন যে, এই সমবেদনার ধারণা আছে

in Islam and in all faiths.

ইসলামসহ সবধরণের ধর্মীয় বিশ্বাসের কেন্দ্রবিন্দুতে।

But it can't stop there. It can't stop with the launch.

কিন্তু এটা এখানেই থেমে যেতে পারে না। শুরু করার উদ্যোগ নিয়েই এটা শেষ হতে পারে না।

Religious teaching, this is where we've gone so wrong,

আমরা ধর্মীয় শিক্ষার বিষয়টিতে খুবই ভুল করে এসেছি,

concentrating solely on believing abstruse doctrines.

বিমূর্ত সব মতবাদে বিশ্বাস স্থাপনের উপর সম্পূর্ণ মনোযোগ দিয়ে।

Religious teaching must always lead to action.

ধর্মীয় শিক্ষা অবশ্যই কর্মতত্পরতার দিকেও নিয়ে যেতে হবে।

And I intend to work on this till my dying day.

আমি মৃত্যুর আগ পর্যন্ত এটা নিয়ে কাজ করে যাব।

And I want to continue with our partners

আর আমি আমার সঙ্গীদের কাজ করতে বলব

to do two things --

দুইটা দিক নিয়ে --

educate and stimulate compassionate thinking.

সমবেদনার ধারণাটি সম্পর্কে মানুষকে জানানো ও তাদের মধ্যে উদ্দিপনা তৈরি করা।

Education because we've so

জানানোর বিষয়টি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কারণ বর্তমানে

dropped out of compassion.

করুণা বা সমবেদনার ধারণা আমাদের ভিতর থেকে ঝড়ে পড়েছে।

People often think it simply means

মানুষ প্রায়শই এমনটা ভাবে যে,

feeling sorry for somebody.

কারও জন্য দুঃখ বোধ করাটাই সমবেদনা প্রকাশের স্বরুপ।

But of course you don't understand compassion

কিন্তু এইভাবে চিন্তা করলে বলা যায় অবশ্যই

if you're just going to think about it.

আপনি সমবেদনার ধারণাটা বুঝতে পারেননি।

You also have to do it.

শুধু চিন্তা করলেই হবে না, কাজেও আপনার চিন্তার প্রতিফলন ঘটাতে হবে।

I want them to get the media involved

আমি এই কাজে গণমাধ্যমকে সংযুক্ত করতে চাই।

because the media are crucial

কারণ গণমাধ্যম অনেক সহায়ক ভূমিকা রাখতে পারে

in helping to dissolve some of the stereotypical views

সমাজে প্রতিষ্ঠিত বাধাধরা দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি পরিবর্তনের ক্ষেত্রে।

we have of other people,

অন্য মানুষ সম্পর্কে আমাদের ধারণা,

which are dividing us from one another.

যেগুলো মানুষকে একে অপরের থেকে বিভক্ত করে রাখে।

The same applies to educators.

সামাজিক শিক্ষকদের ক্ষেত্রেও একই কথা প্রযোজ্য।

I'd like youth to get a sense of

আমি তরুণদের প্রতিও এই সক্রিয়তার স্বাদ নেওয়ার,

the dynamism, the dynamic and challenge

সমবেদনাপূর্ণ জীবনধারায় জীবনযাপন করার

of a compassionate lifestyle.

চ্যালেঞ্জ গ্রহণের আহ্বান জানাবো।

And also see that it demands acute intelligence,

আর এটাও খেয়াল রাখতে হবে যে, এই জীবনধারা দাবি করে সংবেদনশীল, সূক্ষ বুদ্ধিমত্তা,

not just a gooey feeling.

শুধু কিছু ভাবপ্রবণ আবেগই যথেষ্ট নয়।

I'd like to call upon scholars to explore

আমি বুদ্ধিজীবিদের প্রতি আহ্বান জানাবো,

the compassionate theme

এই সমবেদনা সংশ্লিষ্ট বিষয়বস্তু

in their own and in other people's traditions.

বিভিন্ন এলাকার মানুষের সংস্কৃতিতে কিভাবে ছড়িয়ে আছে তা খুঁজে বের করার জন্য।

And perhaps above all,

আর সম্ভবত সবকিছুর উপরে,

to encourage a sensitivity about

মানুষের বোধকে জাগাতে হবে

uncompassionate speaking,

বিদ্বেষপূর্ণ ধারাভাষ্যের বিরুদ্ধে

so that because people have this Charter,

যেন এই সনদটা থাকার কারণে,

whatever their beliefs or lack of them,

তাঁদের ধর্মীয় বিশ্বাস যাই হোক বা তাতে কোন ঘাটতি থাকুক কেন,

they feel empowered

তাঁরা বিদ্বেষ বা ঘৃণাপূর্ণ বক্তব্যের প্রতিবাদ করার মতো

to challenge uncompassionate speech,

সক্ষম বলে ভাবতে পারবেন নিজেদেরকে

disdainful remarks

যেগুলো আসে

from their religious leaders, their political leaders,

ধর্মীয় বা রাজনৈতিক নেতাদের কাছ থেকে,

from the captains of industry.

এই ঘরানার শীর্ষপর্যায় থেকে।

Because we can change the world,

কারণ আমরাই এই দুনিয়াটা বদলাতে পারি।

we have the ability.

আমাদের সেই সক্ষমতা আছে।

I would never have thought of putting the Charter online.

সমবেদনার সনদটা অনলাইনে প্রকাশ করার কথাটা আমি কখনোই ভাবিনি।

I was still stuck in the old world

আমি সেই পুরোনো দুনিয়ার মধ্যেই আটকে ছিলাম।

of a whole bunch of boffins sitting together in a room

যেখানে একটা ঘরের মধ্যে কিছু বিজ্ঞানী-বিশেষজ্ঞরা বসে থাকেন

and issuing yet another arcane statement.

আর পরস্পরের প্রতি রহস্যময় বক্তব্য দেন।

And TED introduced me to a whole new way

আর এইসময়ে TED আমাকে পরিচয় করিয়ে দেয়

of thinking and presenting ideas.

চিন্তাভাবনা উপস্থাপন করার নতুন পদ্ধতির সঙ্গে ।

Because that is what is so wonderful about TED.

এটাই TED এর সবচেয়ে চমত্কার বিষয়।

In this room, all this expertise,

এই ঘরে, অনেক ধরণের চিন্তাভাবনা করার মানুষ আছেন।

if we joined it all together,

আমরা যদি সবার চিন্তাধারা একসঙ্গে মেলাতে পারি,

we could change the world.

তাহলে আমরা এই দুনিয়াটাকে বদলাতে পারব।

And of course the problems sometimes seem insuperable.

আর অবশ্যই কিছু কিছু সমস্যা তো মনেই হবে দুর্লঙ্ঘ্য।

But I'd just like to quote, finish at the end

আমি শেষ করতে চাই একটা উদ্ধৃতি দিয়ে

with a reference to a British author, an Oxford author

ব্রিটেনের এক লেখক,

whom I don't quote very often,

তাঁকে আমি খুব বেশি উদ্ধৃত করি না।

But he wrote one thing that stuck in my mind

কিন্তু তাঁর একটা লেখা আমার মাথায় গেঁথে গেছে

ever since I read it when I was a schoolgirl.

আমি স্কুলে থাকার সময় এটা পড়েছিলাম

It's in his book "The Four Loves."

‘দ্য ফোর লাভস’ বইয়ে

He said that he distinguished between erotic love,

তিনি বলেছেন ঘনিষ্ঠ প্রেমসম্পর্কের কথা,

when two people gaze, spellbound, into each other's eyes.

যখন দুইটা মানুষ একে অপরের দিকে অপলক দৃষ্টিতে তাকিয়ে থাকে।

And then he compared that to friendship,

আর তারপর তিনি এই সম্পর্কের সঙ্গে তুলনা করেছেন বন্ধুত্বের।

when two people stand side by side, as it were, shoulder to shoulder,

যেখানে দুইটা মানুষ কাঁধে কাঁধ মিলিয়ে পাশাপাশি দাঁড়ায়,

with their eyes fixed on a common goal.

তাদের দৃষ্টি নিবদ্ধ থাকে একটা সাধারণ লক্ষ্যের দিকে।

We don't have to fall in love with each other,

আমাদের একে অপরের প্রেমে না পড়লেও চলবে।

but we can become friends.

কিন্তু আমরা তো বন্ধু হতে পারি।

And I am convinced.

আর আমি এই ধারণার সঙ্গে একমত।

I felt it very strongly

আমি এটা খুবই গভীরভাবে টের পেয়েছি,

during our little deliberations at Vevey,

ভিভেতে আমাদের ছোট্ট বিতর্ক আলোচনার সময় যে,

that when people of all different persuasions

যখন বিভিন্ন চিন্তাধারার মানুষ

come together, working side by side

একত্রিত হয়, কাঁধে কাঁধ মিলিয়ে কাজ করে

for a common goal,

একটা সাধারণ লক্ষ্য অর্জনের জন্য,

differences melt away.

তখন তাদের ভিন্নতাগুলো নিশ্চিহ্ন হয়ে যায়।

And we learn amity.

আর তখন আমরা শিখি বন্ধুত্ব।

And we learn to live together and to get to know one another.

আর আমরা শিখি যে, কিভাবে একত্রে বাস করতে হয়, কিভাবে একে অপরের সঙ্গে পরিচিত হতে হয়।
