I'm a lifelong traveler.

Even as a little kid,

I found that going nowhere

And by going nowhere, I mean nothing more intimidating

It's an old idea.

More than 2,000 years ago, the Stoics were reminding us

it's not our experience that makes our lives,

One man is traumatized for life.

But another, maybe even his brother, almost feels liberated,

and decides this is a great chance to start his life anew.

but thinking makes it so.

And this has certainly been my experience as a traveler.

Twenty-four years ago I took the most mind-bending trip

across North Korea.

But the trip lasted a few days.

What I've done with it sitting still, going back to it in my head,

that's lasted 24 years already

The trip, in other words, gave me some amazing sights,

but it's only sitting still

And I sometimes think that so much of our life

Again, none of this is new;

that's why Shakespeare and the Stoics were telling us this centuries ago,

The Stoics, as far as I know, were not on Facebook.

We all know that in our on-demand lives,

one of the things that's most on demand

is ourselves.

Sociologists have actually found that in recent years

Americans are working fewer hours than 50 years ago,

but we feel as if we're working more.

We can more and more easily make contact with people

In other words, precisely those beings

who have created the technologies

နည်းပညာက ကျွန်တော်တော်တို့ကို

The one thing perhaps that technology hasn't always given us

အမြဲတမ်းပေးမထားဘူးလို့ဆို လောက်တာတစ်ခုက နည်းပညာကို

is a sense of how to make the wisest use of technology.

ဘယ်လို ဉာဏ်ရှိရှိသုံးရမယ်ဆိုတဲ့ သဘောတရားတစ်ခုပါ။

And when you speak of the sabbath,

နောက်ပြီး ဥပုသ်ဆိုတာကို ပြောကြတဲ့အခါ

look at the Ten Commandments --

ပညတ်တော် ၁၀ပါးကိုကြည့်လိုက်ပါ။

there's only one word there for which the adjective "holy" is used,

အဲဒီမှာ "မြင့်မြတ်သော" ဆိုတဲ့ နာမဝိသေသန တစ်လုံးတည်းပဲ သုံးထားတာဖြစ်ပြီး

and that's the Sabbath.

I pick up the Jewish holy book of the Torah --

ဂျူးလူမျိုးတွေရဲ့ Torah ကျမ်းစာအုပ်ကို ကောက်ယူကြည့်လိုက်တယ်

its longest chapter, it's on the Sabbath.

၎င်းရဲ့ အရှည်ဆုံးအခန်းဟာ ဥပုသ်အကြောင်းပါ။

နောက်ပြီး ကျွန်တော်တို့ရဲ့ အကြီးကျယ်ဆုံး စည်းစိမ်တွေထဲက

And we all know that it's really one of our greatest luxuries,

the empty space.

In many a piece of music, it's the pause or the rest

so that the reader can complete my thoughts and sentences

စာဖတ်သူအနေနဲ့ ကျွန်တော့အတွေးတွေ၊ ဝါကျတွေကို ဖြည့်နိုင်အောင်လို့၊

and so that her imagination has room to breathe.

သူမရဲ့ စိတ်ကူး အသက်ရှူဖို့ နေရာလွက်ရှိအောင်လို့ပါ။

Now, in the physical domain, of course, many people,

ကဲ ရုပ်ပိုင်းဆိုင်ရာနယ်ပယ်မှာ တကယ်ပဲဗျာ လူတော်တော်များများဟာ

if they have the resources,

သူတို့မှာ ငွေအင်အားရှိလို့ကတော့

will try to get a place in the country, a second home.

နယ်ဖက်မှာ နေရာတစ်ခုရဖို့ကြိုးလိမ့်မယ်ဗျ၊ အရန်အိမ်တစ်လုံးပေါ့။

ကျွန်တော်တော့ အဲဒီအရင်းအနှီးတွေ

I've never begun to have those resources,

ဘယ်တော့မှစရှိလာမှာမဟုတ်ပါဘူး။

but I sometimes remember that any time I want,

ဒါပေမဲ့ တစ်ခါတစ်လေ သတိရမိတာက

ကျွန်တော်လိုချင်တဲ့အချိန်တိုင်း

I can get a second home in time, if not in space,

just by taking a day off.

And it's never easy because, of course, whenever I do I spend much of it

I sometimes think I'd rather give up meat or sex or wine

than the chance to check on my emails.

And every season I do try to take three days off on retreat

and to be ignoring all those seemingly urgent emails

from my bosses

လျစ်လျူရှုခဲ့ရမှာရယ်နဲ့

and maybe to be missing a friend's birthday party.

သူငယ်ချင်းတစ်ယောက်ရဲ့ မွေးနေ့ပွဲကို

လွတ်ကောင်းလွတ်သွားမယ်တို့ပေါ့ဗျာ။

But as soon as I get to a place of real quiet,

ဒါပေမဲ့ တကယ်ကိုဆိတ်ငြိမ်တဲ့ နေရာတစ်ခုကို

ရောက်ရောက်ချင်းမှာပဲ

I realize that it's only by going there

သဘောပေါက်လိုက်မိတာက အဲဒီကိုသွားခြင်းကသာ

that I'll have anything fresh or creative or joyful to share

with my wife or bosses or friends.

Otherwise, really,

ဒီလိုမဟုတ်ရင်တော့ တကယ်ပဲဗျာ၊

I'm just foisting on them my exhaustion or my distractedness,

ကျွန်တော့ရဲ့ ပင်ပန်းနွမ်းနယ်မှု၊ အာရုံပျက်ပြားမှုတွေနဲ့

သူတို့ကို မှိုင်းသွင်းနေမှာပဲဖြစ်ပါတယ်။၊

which is no blessing at all.

And so when I was 29,

ဒီလိုနဲ့ ကျွန်တော့အသက် ၂၉နှစ်မှာ

I decided to remake my entire life

ကျွန်တော့ဘဝတစ်ခုလုံးကို ဘယ်မှမသွားဘူးဆိုတဲ့အတိုင်း

in the light of going nowhere.

ပြန်လည်ဆန်းစစ်ဖို့ ဆုံးဖြတ်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။

One evening I was coming back from the office,

it was after midnight, I was in a taxi driving through Times Square,

and I suddenly realized that I was racing around so much

I could never catch up with my life.

And my life then, as it happened,

was pretty much the one I might have dreamed of as a little boy.

စိတ်ကူးကောင်း ကူးမိခဲ့မယ့် ဘဝတစ်ခု နီးပါပါပဲ။

ကျွန်တော့မှာ အရမ်းစိတ်ဝင် စားစရာ ကောင်းတဲ့

I had really interesting friends and colleagues,

မိတ်ဆွေတွေနဲ့ လုပ်ဖော်ကိုင်ဖက်တွေရှိတယ်။

I had a nice apartment on Park Avenue and 20th Street.

Park Avenue နဲ့ လမ်း၂၀မှာ ကောင်းမွန်တဲ့ တိုက်ခန်းတစ်ခန်းရှိတယ်။

ကျွန်တော့အတွက်တော့ ကမ္ဘာ့ရေးရာတွေ အကြောင်းရေးသားရတဲ့

I had, to me, a fascinating job writing about world affairs,

but I could never separate myself enough from them

to hear myself think --

or really, to understand if I was truly happy.

And so, I abandoned my dream life

လမ်းကြားလေးတွေပေါ်က တစ်ယောက်ခန်းလေးဆိုတဲ့

for a single room on the backstreets of Kyoto, Japan,

ကျွန်တော့ရဲ့ စိတ်ကူးယဉ်ဘဝကို စွန့်လွတ်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။

which was the place that had long exerted a strong,

ဒါက ကျွန်တော့အပေါ်မှာအချိန်ကြာမြင့်စွာ ပြင်းထန်တဲ့ တကယ်ကို

လျှို့ဝှက်ဆန်းကျယ်တဲ့ ဆွဲငင်အား

really mysterious gravitational pull on me.

သက်ရောက်မှုရှိခဲ့တဲ့ ရှိတဲ့နေရာပါ။

Even as a child

ကလေးလေးတုန်းကတောင်မှ

I would just look at a painting of Kyoto and feel I recognized it;

ကျိုတိုရဲ့ ပန်းချီကားတစ်ခုကို ကြည့်နေခဲ့ပြီး၊

ဒါကို မှတ်မိခဲ့တယ်လို့ ခံစားနေမိတာပါ။

I knew it before I ever laid eyes on it.

But it's also, as you all know,

ဒါပေမဲ့ အားလုံးသိတဲ့အတိုင်းပဲဗျာ

a beautiful city encircled by hills,

ဒါဟာ တောင်ကုန်းတွေဝန်းရံထားပြီး၊ ၂၀၀၀ကျော်ရှိတဲ့

ဘုရားကျောင်းတွေ၊ဗိမာန်တွေနဲ့ ပြည့်နှက်နေတဲ့

filled with more than 2,000 temples and shrines,

လှပတဲ့မြို့တစ်မြို့ လည်းဖြစ်တယ်လေ။

where people have been sitting still for 800 years or more.

အဲဒီမှာ လူတွေက နှစ် ၈၀၀ ဒါမှမဟုတ်

ဒီထက်မက ငြိမ်ငြိမ်လေး ထိုင်နေခဲ့ကြတာလေ။

And quite soon after I moved there, I ended up where I still am

မကြာခင်၏မှာပဲ အဲဒီကို ကျွန်တော်ပြောင်းခဲ့ပါတယ်။

အဲဒီမှာ ကျွန်တော့ဇနီးနဲ့

with my wife, formerly our kids,

အရင်က ကလေးတွေနဲ့ပဲ အဆုံးသတ်သွားပါတော့တယ်။

ဘယ်မှန်းမသိတဲ့နေရာတစ်ခုက

in a two-room apartment in the middle of nowhere

အခန်း၂ခန်းပါတဲ့ တိုက်ခန်းတစ်ခန်းမှာပေါ့၊

where we have no bicycle, no car,

အဲဒီမှာ စက်ဘီးမရှိဘူး၊ကားမရှိဘူး၊

no TV I can understand,

ကျွန်တော်နားလည်တဲ့ တီဗွီမရှိဘူး။

and I still have to support my loved ones

ပြီးတော့ ကျွန်တော့ အချစ်ဆုံးလေးတွေကို ခရီးသွားစာရေးဆရာ၊

as a travel writer and a journalist,

သတင်းစာတစ်ယောက်အဖြစ်နဲ့ပဲ ထောက်ပံ့ပေးနေရတုန်းပါ။

so clearly this is not ideal for job advancement

ဒီတော့ ဒါဟာ အလုပ်အကိုင်တိုးတက်မှု (ဝါ) ယဉ်ကျေးမှုဆိုင်ရာ

or for cultural excitement

စိတ်လှုပ်ရှားမှု (ဝါ) လူမှုရေးဖျော်ဖြေမှုတို့အတွက်တော့

or for social diversion.

စံနမူနာမဟုတ်ဘူးဆိုတာတော့ အရှင်းကြီးပါ။

But I realized that it gives me what I prize most,

ဒါပေမဲ့ ဒါက ကျွန်တော် တန်ဖိုးအထားဆုံး အရာတွေ

ကျွန်တော့ကို ပေးတယ်ဆိုတာတော့ သဘောပေါက်လိုက်မိပါတယ်၊

which is days

နေ့ရက်တွေနဲ့

and hours.

နာရီတွေပေါ့ဗျာ။

I have never once had to use a cell phone there.

အဲဒီမှာဆဲလ်ဖုန်းကို တစ်ခါမှသုံးစရာ မလိုခဲ့ဘူး။

I almost never have to look at the time,

အချိန်ဆိုတာလည်း တစ်ခါမှကြည့်စရာ မလိုလောက်အောင်ပါပဲ။

and every morning when I wake up,

မနက်အိပ်ရာနိူးတော့ တကယ်ပဲဗျာ နေ့ဆိုတာ

really the day stretches in front of me

like an open meadow.

And when life throws up one of its nasty surprises,

အသစ်အဆန်းတွေကိုအန်ထုတ် ပစ်လိုက်တဲ့အခါ

as it will, more than once,

အဲဒီအတိုင်းပဲ တစ်ကြိမ်မကကိုဖြစ်နေမှာပါ၊

when a doctor comes into my room

ဆရာဝန်တစ်ယောက်က စိုးရိမ်နေတဲ့မျက်နှာထားနဲ့

wearing a grave expression,

ကျွန်တော့အခန်းထဲကိုဝင်လာတဲ့အခါ၊

or a car suddenly veers in front of mine on the freeway,

ဒါမှမဟုတ် ကားတစ်စီးက အမြန်လမ်းပေါ်မှာ

ကျွန်တော့ကားရှေ့ကနေ့ ရုတ်တရက် ဝှေ့ရမ်းကွေ့လိုက်တဲ့အခါ

I know, in my bones,

အရိုးတွေထဲကနေ ကျွန်တော်သိလိုက်တာက

that it's the time I've spent going nowhere

ကျွန်တော် ဘယ်မှမသွားပဲကုန်ဆုံး ခဲ့တဲ့အချိန်ဟာ ကျွန်တော် Bhutan ဒါမှမဟုတ်

that is going to sustain me much more

Easter Island ကို တစ်ချိန်လုံး အပြေးအလွှားသွားခဲ့တဲ့ အချိန်ထက်ကို

than all the time I've spent racing around to Bhutan or Easter Island.

I'll always be a traveler --

my livelihood depends on it --

but one of the beauties of travel

is that it allows you to bring stillness

into the motion and the commotion of the world.

I once got on a plane in Frankfurt, Germany,

တစ်ခါက ဂျာမဏီက ဖရန့်ဖတ်(တ်)မှာ လေယဉ်ပေါ်တက်တော့

ဂျာမန်အမျိုးသမီးငယ် တစ်ယောက် ရောက်လာပြီး

and a young German woman came down and sat next to me

ကျွန်တော့ဘေးမှာထိုင်ကာ

and engaged me in a very friendly conversation

ကျွန်တော်နဲ့ ရင်းရင်းနှီးနှီး မိနစ် ၃၀ လောက်

for about 30 minutes,

စကားပြောဆိုခဲ့ပါတယ်။

and then she just turned around

အဲဒီနောက်မှာ သူမကပြန်လှည့်သွားပြီး

and sat still for 12 hours.

၁၂နာရီလုံးလုံး ငြိမ်ငြိမ်လေးထိုင်နေခဲ့တယ်၊

She didn't once turn on her video monitor,

သူမရဲ့ဗီဒီယိုမော်နီတာကို တစ်ချက်ကမှ မဖွင့်ခဲ့ဘူး။

စာအုပ်တစ်အုပ်မှ ဆွဲမထုတ်ခဲ့ဘူး။

she never pulled out a book, she didn't even go to sleep,

she just sat still,

ငြိမ်ငြိမ်လေးပဲထိုင်နေခဲ့တယ်၊

and something of her clarity and calm really imparted itself to me.

တကယ်ပဲ ကျွန်တော့ဆီကို သူဘာသာ ဖွင့်ချပြနေပါတယ်။

I've noticed more and more people taking conscious measures these days

သတိပြုမိတာက လူတွေဟာ တိုးတိုးပြီးသူတို့ဘဝထဲက

နေရာလွတ်တစ်ခုကို ကြိုးစားဖွင့်ဖို့

ဒီနေ့ခေတ်မှာ ကိုယ့်ကိုကိုယ်

to try to open up a space inside their lives.

Some people go to black-hole resorts

တစ်ချို့တွေကတော့ တွင်းနက်ကြီးလို့ဆိုတဲ့

အပန်းဖြေနေရာတွေကိုသွားပြီး

where they'll spend hundreds of dollars a night

အဲဒီမှာ သူတို့ရဲ့ ဆဲလ်ဖုန်းတွေနဲ့ လက်တော့(ပ်)တွေကို

in order to hand over their cell phone and their laptop

ဧည့်ကြိုစားပွဲကိုရောက်လာတဲ့အခါ လွှဲပြောင်းဖို့အတွက်

to the front desk on arrival.

တစ်ညကို ဒေါ်လာရာနဲ့ချီပြီး အကုန်ခံကြပါတယ်။

Some people I know, just before they go to sleep,

ကျွန်တော်သိတဲ့ တစ်ချို့ကတော့ အိပ်ရာမဝင်ခင်လေးမှာ

သူတို့ဆီကိုပို့တဲ့ စာတိုလေးတွေကို

instead of scrolling through their messages

အထက်အောက်ရွေ့ကြည့်တာတို့

or checking out YouTube,

ဒါမှမဟုတ် YouTube မှာကြည့်တာတို့အစား

just turn out the lights and listen to some music,

မီးတွေပိတ်ပြီး တေးဂီတကို နားထောင်ကြပါတယ်၊

and notice that they sleep much better

and wake up much refreshed.

I was once fortunate enough

တစ်ခါမှာတော့ Los Angeles ကအလွန် မြင့်မားပြီး၊

to drive into the high, dark mountains behind Los Angeles,

နက်မှောင်တဲ့ တောင်တွေဆီကို

ကားမောင်းသွားဖို့အထိ ကံကောင်းခဲ့ပါတယ်။

where the great poet and singer

အဲဒီမှာ ကဗျာဆရာကြီးနဲ့ အဆိုတော်ဖြစ်တဲ့

and international heartthrob Leonard Cohen

နိူင်ငံတကာ အသည်းစွဲ Leonard Cohen နေထိုင်နေပြီး၊

was living and working for many years as a full-time monk

အချိန်ပြည့် ရဟန်းတစ်ပါးအနေနဲ့ နှစ်ပေါင်းများစွာ

in the Mount Baldy Zen Center.

And I wasn't entirely surprised

Something in us, I think, is crying out

And I think many of us have the sensation,

I certainly do,

ကျွန်တော်ကတော့ သေချာပါတယ်၊

that we're standing about two inches away from a huge screen,

and it's noisy and it's crowded

and it's changing with every second,

စက္ကန့်တိုင်းကို ပြောင်းလဲနေတာပါ၊

and that screen is our lives.

အဲဒီ ပိတ်ကားကတော့ ကျွန်တော်တို့ ဘဝတွေပဲပေါ့ဗျာ။

And it's only by stepping back, and then further back,

နောက်ပြီး ဒါက နောက်ဆုတ်ရင်းနဲ့၊ ပြီး ရှေ့တိုးရင်း၊

and holding still,

နောက် ငြိမ်အောင်ထိန်းလိုက်ရင်းနဲ့ပဲ

that we can begin to see what the canvas means

ပတ္တူစက ဘာလဲဆိုတာကို မြင်လာပြီး

and to catch the larger picture.

ပိုကြီးမားတဲ့ ရုပ်ပုံကို စပြီးဖမ်းမိလာနိူင်ပါတယ်။

လူအနည်းငယ်က ဘယ်ကိုမှမ သွားတဲ့နည်းလမ်းနဲ့

And a few people do that for us by going nowhere.

So, in an age of acceleration,

nothing can be more exhilarating than going slow.

And in an age of distraction,

nothing is so luxurious as paying attention.

သတိမူပြီးနေရခြင်းလောက် ဘယ်အရာကမှ ဇိမ်ကျတာမရှိပါဘူး။

And in an age of constant movement,

ပြီးတော့ အတောမသတ် ရွေ့ရှားနေတဲ့ခေတ်မှာ ငြိမ်ငြိမ်လေးထိုင်နေခြင်းလောက်

nothing is so urgent as sitting still.

အရမ်းကို အရေးကြီးတာမရှိပါဘူး။

So you can go on your next vacation

ဒီတော့ ခင်ဗျားတို့ရဲ့ နောက်တစ်ခါ အားလပ်ရက်ခရီးကို

to Paris or Hawaii, or New Orleans;

Paris Hawaii New Orleans ကို သွားလို့ရပါတယ်။

ခင်ဗျားတို့တွေ နှစ်သက်ပျော်ရွှင်ဖွယ်ရာ အချိန်တစ်ခု

I bet you'll have a wonderful time.

ရှိလိမ့်မယ်ဆိုတာ လုံးဝကျိန်းသေပါတယ်။

But, if you want to come back home alive and full of fresh hope,

ဒါပေမဲ့ ခင်ဗျားတို့တွေ နိူးကြားပြီး လတ်ဆတ်တဲ့

မျှော်လင့်ချက် အပြည့်အဝနဲ့ ကမ္ဘာကြီးကို

in love with the world,

ဘယ်ကိုမှ မသွားခြင်းဆိုတာကို
