So I've been thinking about the difference between

the résumé virtues and the eulogy virtues.

The résumé virtues are the ones you put on your résumé,

ကိုယ်ရေးရာဇဝင် ဂုဏ်အင်္ဂါတွေဆိုတာက သင့်ရဲ့ကိုယ်ရေးအကျဉ်းချုပ်မှာ သင်ထည့်သွင်းတဲ့ အရာတွေပေါ့၊

which are the skills you bring to the marketplace.

ဈေးကွက်ထဲကို သင်ယူဆောင်လာတဲ့ တတ်ပွန်မှုတွေဆိုပါတော့။

The eulogy virtues are the ones

ချီးကျူးထောပနာပြုခြင်း ဂုဏ်အင်္ဂါတွေဆိုတာကတော့ ကွယ်လွန်သူကို

that get mentioned in the eulogy,

ချီးမွန်းထောပနာပြုတဲ့အခါမှာ ထုတ်ဖော်ပြောဆိုတဲ့အကြောင်းအရာတွေပေါ့။

which are deeper: who are you, in your depth,

ဒါတွေက ပိုပြီး နက်နဲတာပေါ့။သင်ဟာ ဘယ်သူလဲ။ နက်နက်နဲနဲပြောရရင်တော့

what is the nature of your relationships,

သင့်ရဲ့ နှီးနွယ်ဆက်စပ်မှုတွေရဲ့ သဘောသဘာက ဘာလဲ၊

are you bold, loving, dependable, consistency?

သင်ဟာ ရဲရင့်လား၊ ယုံကြည်အားထားလောက်ရဲ့လား၊တည်ကြည်ပါရဲ့လား။

And most of us, including me, would say

ကျွန်တော်အပါအဝင် ကျွန်တော်တို့ အများစုကတော့ ဂုဏ်အင်္ဂါတွေထဲမှာ

that the eulogy virtues are the more important of the virtues.

ချီးကျူးထောပနာပြုခြင်း ဂုဏ်အင်္ဂါတွေဟာဖြင့်ပိုပြီး အရေးပါတယ်လို့ ဆိုမိကြပါလိမ့် မလားပဲ။

But at least in my case, are they the ones that

ဒါပေမယ့် အနည်းဆုံးတော့ ကျွန်တော့ ကိစ္စမှာဆိုရင် ဒါတွေဟာ ကျွန်တော် အများဆုံး စဉ်းစားမိတဲ့

I think about the most? And the answer is no.

အကြောင်းတွေများလားပေါ့။ အဖြေကတော့ မဟုတ်ပါဘူးလို့ပေါ့။

So I've been thinking about that problem,

ဒီလိုနဲ့ ကျွန်တော် အဲဒီ ပြဿနာ အကြောင်းကို စဉ်းစားနေမိခဲ့ပါတယ်။

and a thinker who has helped me think about it

ပြီးတော့ ကျွန်တော့ကို ဒီအကြောင်းကို စဉ်းစားတွေးခေါ်ဖို့ကူညီပေးသူကတော့

is a guy named Joseph Soloveitchik, who was a rabbi

ဂျိုးဇက် ဆိုလိုဗေ့(တ်)ချစ်(ခ်)လို့ခေါ်တဲ့ အတွေးအခေါ်ပညာရှင်တစ်ယောက် ပဲဖြစ်ပါတယ်။ သူဟာ ဂျူးဓမ္မဆရာတစ်ယောက်ဖြစ်ပြီး၊

who wrote a book called "The Lonely Man Of Faith" in 1965.

၁၉၆၅ ခုနှစ်မှာ "The Lonely Man Of Faith" ဆို့တဲ့စာအုပ်တစ်အုပ်ကို ရေးသားခဲ့သူပါ။

Soloveitchik said there are two sides of our natures,

ကျွန်တော်တို့ရဲ့သဘာဝဗီဇတွေမှာ အခြမ်း(၂)ခြမ်းရှိတယ်လို့ ဆိုလိုဗေ့(တ်)ချစ်(ခ်)ပြောပါတယ်။

which he called Adam I and Adam II.

ဒါတွေကိုသူက အာဒံ(၁)နဲ့ အာဒံ(၂)လို့သူကခေါ်ပါတယ်။

Adam I is the worldly, ambitious,

အာဒံ(၁) ကတော့ကျွန်တော်တို့ သဘာဝဗီဇရဲ့

external side of our nature.

လောကီရေးရာ၊ရည်မှန်းချက်ကြီးတာတွေနဲ့ဆိုင်တဲ့ အပြင်ဘက်ခြမ်းပါ။

He wants to build, create, create companies,

သူက တည်ဆောက်ချင်တယ်၊ဖန်တီးချင်တယ်၊ကုမ္ပဏီတွေကို ဖန်တီးချင်တယ်

create innovation.

၊အသစ်အဆန်းတွေကို ဖန်တီးချင်တယ်။

Adam II is the humble side of our nature.

အာဒံ(၂)ကတော့ သဘာဝဗီဇရဲ့ ထောင်လွှားမှုမရှိတဲ့ အခြမ်းပဲပေါ့။

Adam II wants not only to do good but to be good,

အာဒံ(၂)က ကောင်းကျိုးဆောင်ချင်ရုံမက ကောင်းအောင်လည်းနေချင်တယ်။

to live in a way internally

စိတ်ထဲကနေပြီးတော့ ဘုရားသခင်၊ဖန်ဆင်ခြင်းနဲ့ ကျွန်တော်တို့ရဲ့အခွင့်အလမ်းတွေကို

that honors God, creation and our possibilities.

ကြည်ညိုလေးစားတဲ့ နေထိုင်ပုံနဲ့ရှင်သန်ချင်တယ်။

Adam I wants to conquer the world.

အာဒံ(၁)က လောကကြီးကို စိုးမိုးချင်တယ်။

Adam II wants to hear a calling and obey the world.

အာဒံ(၂)တော့ စိတ်အားထက်သန်မှုတွေကို ကြားသိချင်တယ်။လောကကြီးနဲ့ လိုက်လျောညီထွေဖြစ်ချင်တယ်။

Adam I savors accomplishment.

အာဒံ(၁)က အောင်မြင်မှုကို တစိမ့်စိမ့်အရသာခံတယ်။

Adam II savors inner consistency and strength.

အာဒံ(၂)ကတော့ စိတ်အတွင်းမှာ သိုဝှက်ထားတဲ့ တည်ငြိမ်မှုနဲ့ စွမ်းအားကို တစိမ့်စိမ့်အရသာခံတယ်။

Adam I asks how things work.

Adam II asks why we're here.

Adam I's motto is "success."

And Soloveitchik argued that these two sides

of our nature are at war with each other.

We live in perpetual self-confrontation

between the external success and the internal value.

And the tricky thing, I'd say, about these

ဒီတော့ ကျွန်တော်ပြောချင်တဲ့ ဒီသဘာဝဗီဇ အခြမ်း(၂)ခြမ်းနဲ့ ပတ်သက်တဲ့

two sides of our nature is they work

လှည့်စားတတ်တဲ့ အရာကတော့ သူတို့တွေဟာ

by different logics.

သဘောတရား အမျိုးမျိုးနဲ့ အလုပ်လုပ်လုပ်ကြတယ် ဆိုတာပါ။

The external logic is an economic logic:

အပြင်ပန်း သဘောထားကတော့ စီးပွားရေးဆိုင်ရာ သဘောထားပေါ့။

input leads to output, risk leads to reward.

ဖြည့်သွင်းလိုက်တဲ့ အရာတွေကို ထုတ်ပေးမှုဖြစ်စေတယ်။ စွန့်စားခြင်းက ဆုလာဒ် ဖြစ်သွားတယ်။

The internal side of our nature

ကျွန်တော်တို့ရဲ့ သဘာဝဗီဇ အတွင်းဘက်ကတော့

is a moral logic and often an inverse logic.

ကိုယ်ကျင့်ဆိုင်ရာ သဘောထားတစ်ခု ဖြစ်ပြီးတော့ မကြာခဏဆိုသလို ပြောင်းပြန်သဘောထား တစ်ခုလည်း ဖြစ်နေတာပေါ့။

You have to give to receive.

လက်ခံရရှိဖို့ သင်ဟာ ပေးလှူရပါမယ်။

You have to surrender to something outside yourself

to gain strength within yourself.

You have to conquer the desire to get what you want.

In order to fulfill yourself, you have to forget yourself.

In order to find yourself, you have to lose yourself.

We happen to live in a society that favors Adam I,

ကျွန်တော်တို့တွေဟာ အာဒံ(၂)ကို လျစ်လျူရှုပြီး တော့ အာဒံ(၁)ကို အားပေးထောက်ခံတဲ့

and often neglects Adam II.

လူ့အဖွဲ့အစည်းတစ်ခုမှာ နေထိုင်ဖို့ ကြုံကြိုက်နေပါတယ်။

And the problem is, that turns you into a shrewd animal

who treats life as a game,

and you become a cold, calculating creature

who slips into a sort of mediocrity

where you realize there's a difference

between your desired self and your actual self.

You're not earning the sort of eulogy you want,

you hope someone will give to you.

သင်မျှော်လင့်တဲ့ ချီးမွမ်းထောပနာပြုမှူမျိုးသင်ရမှာမဟုတ်ဘူး။

You don't have the depth of conviction.

သင့်မှာက နက်ရှိုင်းတဲ့ ယုံကြည်မှုမျိုးမရှိဘူးလေ။

You don't have an emotional sonorousness.

သင့်မှာ စိတ်ခံစားမှုပိုင်းဆိုင်ရာ ဩဇာနဲ့ ပြည့်စုံခြင်းမရှိဘူး။

You don't have commitment to tasks

သင့်မှာ ဘဝတစ်သက်တာထက်ပိုပြီးအချိန်ကြာနိူင်မယ့်

that would take more than a lifetime to commit.

လုပ်ဆောင်စရာတွေကိုလုပ်ဖို့ ရည်စူးနှစ်မြှပ်ထားခြင်း မရှိဘူး။

I was reminded of a common response through history

သင်ဟာ အာဒံ(၂)စစ်စစ် တစ်ယောက် ဘယ်လိုတည်ဆောက်သလဲ၊

of how you build a solid Adam II,

ဂုဏ်သိက္ခာရဲ့ လေးနက်မှု တစ်ခုကို ဘယ်လိုတည်ဆောက်သလဲဆိုတဲ့ အတိတ်သမ်ိုင်းကနေပြီး

how you build a depth of character.

ဖြစ်နေကျ တုံ့ ပြန်မှု တစ်ခုကို ကျွန်တော် သတိရသွားတယ်။

Through history, people have gone back

အတိတ်သမိုင်း ကနေတစ်ဆင့် လူတွေဟာ

into their own pasts,

to a moment of shame,

some sin committed, some act of selfishness,

an act of omission, of shallowness,

the sin of anger, the sin of self-pity,

trying to be a people-pleaser, a lack of courage.

သတ္တိကင်းမဲ့ခြင်း စတာတွေဆီကို ဆွဲခေါ်သွားပါတယ်။

Adam I is built by building on your strengths.

အာဒံ(၁)ကို သင့်စွမ်းအားတွေကို ပျိုးထောင်ခြင်းနဲ့တည်ဆောက်ပါတယ်။

Adam II is built by fighting your weaknesses.

အာဒံ(၂)ကိုတော့ သင့်ရဲ့အားနည်းချက်တွေကို တွန်းလှန်ခြင်းနဲ့ တည်ဆောက်ပါတယ်။

You go into yourself, you find the sin

သင့် ကိုယ်တွင်းအဇ္စျတ္တ ထဲကို သင်ဝင်လိုက်ပါ။

which you've committed over and again through your life,

သင့်ဘဝတစ်လျှောက် သင် အကြိမ်ကြိမ် ကျူးလွန်မိထားတဲ့ မကောင်းမှု၊

your signature sin

out of which the others emerge,

and you fight that sin and you wrestle with that sin,

and out of that wrestling, that suffering,

then a depth of character is constructed.

ဂုဏ်သိက္ခာရဲ့ လေးနက်မှု တစ်ခု ကိုတည်ဆောက်လိုက်ပါတယ်။

And we're often not taught to recognize

နောက်ပြီးတော့မကြာခဏဆိုသလို ကျွန်တော်တို့ကို

the sin in ourselves,

ကိုယ်တွင်းမှာရှိတဲ့ မကောင်းမှုကို အသိအမှတ်ပြုဖို့သင်ကြားပေးထားခြင်းမရှိပါဘူး။

in that we're not taught in this culture

how to wrestle with it,

ဘယ်လို ရင်ဆိုင်ရမလဲ၊ ဒါကို ဘယ်လို ထိုးစစ်ဆင်ရမလဲ ဆိုတာကို

how to confront it, and how to combat it.

ဒီယဉ်ကျေးမှုမှာ သင်ထားပေးခြင်း မရှိပါဘူး။

We live in a culture with an Adam I mentality

အာဒံ(၁)တစ်ယောက်ရဲ့ စိတ်နေသဘောထားနဲ့ယဉ်ကျေးမှုတစ်ခု အတွင်းမှာ ကျွန်တော်တို့နေထိုင်နေပြီး၊

where we're inarticulate about Adam II.

အဲဒီမှာ အာဒံ(၂)အကြောင်းကို ကျွန်တော်တို့ မဖွင့်ဟတတ်ပါဘူး။

Finally, Reinhold Niebuhr

နောက်ဆုံးအနေနဲ့ ရင်း(န်)ဟိုး နီးဘား ကနေပြီး

summed up the confrontation, the fully lived

ပြီးပြည့်စုံတဲ့ နေထိုင်မှုနဲ့အာဒံ(၁)နဲ့ အာဒံ(၂)ရဲ့ ဘဝ

Adam I and Adam II life, this way:

ထိပ်တိုက်ရင်ဆိုင်ခြင်းကို ဒီလို အနှစ်ချုပ်ခဲ့တယ်။

"Nothing that is worth doing can be achieved in our lifetime;

"လုပ်သင့်လုပ်သင့်လုပ်ထိုက်သော မည်သည့်အရာကိုမျှ ကျွန်ုပ်တို့ ဘဝတစ်သင်တာတွင် အောင်မြင်ပြီးမြောက်နိူင်မည် မဟုတ်ချေ။

therefore we must be saved by hope.

ထို့ကြောင့် မျှော်လင့် ခြင်းအားဖြင့်သာ ကျွန်ုပ်တို့ကို ကယ်တင် ရပေတော့မည်။

Nothing which is true or beautiful or good makes

စစ်မှန်သော၊လှပသော၊ကောင်းမွန်သော မည်သည့်အရာကမျှ

complete sense in any immediate context of history;
