So I've been thinking about the difference between

the résumé virtues and the eulogy virtues.

The résumé virtues are the ones you put on your résumé,

The eulogy virtues are the ones

that get mentioned in the eulogy,

which are deeper: who are you, in your depth,

더 심오합니다: 여러분 내면의 정체,

what is the nature of your relationships,

인간 관계는 어떤 성격이었는지

are you bold, loving, dependable, consistency?

용기있고, 사랑이 많고, 믿을 수 있고, 한결 같은지 입니다.

And most of us, including me, would say

제 자신을 포함해 우리들 대부분은

that the eulogy virtues are the more important of the virtues.

이력서 덕목보다 추도문 덕목이 중요하다고 말은 하지만

But at least in my case, are they the ones that

그래서 추도문 덕목에 대해 가장 많이 생각하냐 하면

I think about the most? And the answer is no.

적어도 제 자신의 경우에는 그렇지 않습니다.

So I've been thinking about that problem,

이 문제에 대해 제가 생각하고 있을 때

and a thinker who has helped me think about it

도움이 된 사상가가

is a guy named Joseph Soloveitchik, who was a rabbi

조셉 솔로베이치크라는

who wrote a book called "The Lonely Man Of Faith" in 1965.

1965년 "외로운 믿음의 사람" 이라는 책을 저술한 랍비입니다.

Soloveitchik said there are two sides of our natures,

솔로베이치크는 우리의 성향의 두 가지 단면,

which he called Adam I and Adam II.

아담 I 과 아담 II 를 이야기합니다.

Adam I is the worldly, ambitious,

아담 I은 세속적이고, 야망찹니다.

external side of our nature.

우리 성향의 외향적인 부분이죠.

He wants to build, create, create companies,

아담 I은 건설하고, 창조하고, 회사를 설립하고,

create innovation.

혁신을 이루기 원합니다.

Adam II is the humble side of our nature.

아담 II는 우리 성향의 겸손한 부분입니다.

Adam II wants not only to do good but to be good,

아담 II는 단순한 선행을 넘어 선해지기 원하고

to live in a way internally

내면에서부터

that honors God, creation and our possibilities.

신, 피조물, 그리고 우리의 가능성에 경의를 표하는 삶을 살기 원합니다.

Adam I wants to conquer the world.

아담 I은 세상을 정복하기 원합니다.

Adam II wants to hear a calling and obey the world.

아담 II는 소명을 받아 세상에 순종하기 원합니다.

Adam I savors accomplishment.

아담 I은 성취를 만끽합니다.

Adam II savors inner consistency and strength.

아담 II는 내면의 한결같음과 힘을 즐깁니다.

Adam I asks how things work.

아담 I은 이 세상이 어떻게 돌아가는지 묻지만

Adam II asks why we're here.

아담 II는 이 세상에 우리가 왜 있는지 묻습니다.

Adam I's motto is "success."

아담 I의 좌우명은 "성공" 입니다.

Adam II's motto is "love, redemption and return."

아담 II의 좌우명은 "사랑, 구원, 그리고 회복" 입니다.

And Soloveitchik argued that these two sides

솔로베이치크는 우리 안의 이 양면이

of our nature are at war with each other.

서로 싸우고 있다고 말합니다.

We live in perpetual self-confrontation

우리는 끊임없이 외면적인 성공과

between the external success and the internal value.

내면의 가치 사이에서 스스로와 대립합니다.

And the tricky thing, I'd say, about these

여기서 곤란한 점은

two sides of our nature is they work

이 양 측이 서로 다른

by different logics.

논리로 움직인다는 것입니다.

The external logic is an economic logic:

외면적인 논리는 경제학적 논리입니다.

input leads to output, risk leads to reward.

인풋이 아웃풋을 만들고, 위험이 보상으로 이어집니다.

The internal side of our nature

그러나 내면에서는

is a moral logic and often an inverse logic.

도덕의 논리, 또 많은 경우 반대의 논리가 존재합니다.

You have to give to receive.

받기 위해서는 주어야 하고

You have to surrender to something outside yourself

외면의 무엇인가를 포기해야만

to gain strength within yourself.

내면의 힘을 얻을 수 있습니다.

You have to conquer the desire to get what you want.

갈망하는 것을 얻기 위해서는 갈망하는 마음을 이겨야 합니다.

In order to fulfill yourself, you have to forget yourself.

자신을 성취하기 위해서는 자신을 잊어야 합니다.

In order to find yourself, you have to lose yourself.

스스로를 찾기 위해서는 스스로를 잃어야 합니다.

We happen to live in a society that favors Adam I,

우리 사회는 공교롭게도 아담 I을 선호하고

and often neglects Adam II.

아담 II는 많은 경우 무시됩니다.

And the problem is, that turns you into a shrewd animal

그렇게 되면 문제는 우리가 인생을 게임처럼 취급하는

who treats life as a game,

기민한 동물이 된다는 것입니다.

and you become a cold, calculating creature

여러분은 차갑고 계산적인 존재가 되어

who slips into a sort of mediocrity

적당한 수준에 안주하며 살게됩니다.

where you realize there's a difference

그러다가 내가 원하는 자신과

between your desired self and your actual self.

실제의 자신이 다르다는 것을 깨닫게 됩니다.

You're not earning the sort of eulogy you want,

내가 죽었을 때 누군가 써줬으면 하는

you hope someone will give to you.

그런 추도문을 만들고 있지 않다는 것을요.

You don't have the depth of conviction.

마음 깊이 존재하는 확신도 없고

You don't have an emotional sonorousness.

감정적인 울려퍼짐도 없으며

You don't have commitment to tasks

인생을 전부 바쳐도 부족할 정도의

that would take more than a lifetime to commit.

전념과 헌신의 대상도 없습니다.

I was reminded of a common response through history

저는 어떻게 건실한 아담 II를 만들 수 있는지

of how you build a solid Adam II,

역사속에서 그 답을 살펴보았습니다.

how you build a depth of character.

어떻게 하면 깊이있는 인격을 키울 수 있을까요.

Through history, people have gone back

역사적으로 살펴보면, 사람들은

into their own pasts,

자신의 과거로 돌아가보았습니다.

sometimes to a precious time in their life,

삶에서 소중했던 순간으로,

to their childhood,

혹은 어린 시절로,

and often, the mind gravitates in the past

그리고 많은 경우에 수치스러웠던 순간으로

to a moment of shame,

돌아갔습니다.

some sin committed, some act of selfishness,

어떤 죄를 지었을 때, 이기적인 행동을 했을 때,

an act of omission, of shallowness,

태만, 겉치레만 생각한 행동,

the sin of anger, the sin of self-pity,

분노로 인한 죄, 자기 연민으로 인한 죄,

trying to be a people-pleaser, a lack of courage.

다른 이들의 비위를 맞추려고 한 때, 용기가 없었을 때.

Adam I is built by building on your strengths.

아담 I은 우리의 장점을 개발하는 걸로 성장합니다.

Adam II is built by fighting your weaknesses.

아담 II는 우리의 약점과 싸움으로 성장합니다.

You go into yourself, you find the sin

자신의 마음을 살펴보면 지금껏 살면서

which you've committed over and again through your life,

반복해서 지른 죄를 발견하게 됩니다.

your signature sin

자신의 특징적인 죄요.

out of which the others emerge,

그 죄를 발견하면 그를 따라 자신의 다른 죄들도 나타나고

and you fight that sin and you wrestle with that sin,

그 죄와 싸우고 씨름하면서

and out of that wrestling, that suffering,

그 씨름에서, 그 고통에서,

then a depth of character is constructed.

인격의 깊이가 발현됩니다.

And we're often not taught to recognize

하지만 보통 우리는 우리 안의 죄를

the sin in ourselves,

보는 법을 배우지 않습니다.

in that we're not taught in this culture

how to wrestle with it,

how to confront it, and how to combat it.

We live in a culture with an Adam I mentality

where we're inarticulate about Adam II.

Finally, Reinhold Niebuhr

마지막으로, 레이놀드 니부르는

summed up the confrontation, the fully lived

그 내면의 전투, 즉 아담 I과 II를 둘 다

Adam I and Adam II life, this way:

온전하게 산 삶을 이런 식으로 표현합니다:

"Nothing that is worth doing can be achieved in our lifetime;

"이룰만한 가치가 있는 어느 것도 수명 안에 이루어질 수 없으므로

therefore we must be saved by hope.

우리는 희망으로 구원 받아야 한다.

Nothing which is true or beautiful or good makes

진실되고 아름답고 좋은 그 어느 것도

complete sense in any immediate context of history;

그 순간의 역사적 상황으로 완벽하게 설명되지 않기에

therefore we must be saved by faith.

우리는 믿음으로 구원 받아야 한다.

Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone;

우리가 하는 어떤 선한 일도 혼자서는 할 수 없기에

therefore we must be saved by love.

우리는 사랑으로 구원 받아야 한다.

No virtuous act is quite as virtuous

그 어떤 고결한 행동도 우리 친구나 적의 눈에 보다는

from the standpoint of our friend or foe as from our own standpoint.

우리 자신의 눈에 더 고결하게 보일 것이기에

Therefore we must be saved by that final form of love,

우리는 궁극적인 사랑의 형태로 구원받아야 한다.

which is forgiveness.”

그것은 바로 용서이다."
