Today, I am going to talk about anger.

When I was 11,

When I was 27,

hearing the plight of a desperate slave father

whose daughter was about to be sold to a brothel

made me angry.

ကျွန်တော် ဒေါသဖြစ်ခဲ့တယ်။

At the age of 50,

အသက် ၅၀ မှာတော့

lying on the street, in a pool of blood,

လမ်းပေါ်မှာကျွန်တော့ သားနှင့်အတူ

along with my own son,

သွေးအိုင်ထဲမှာ လဲလျောင်းနေခဲ့တော့လည်း

made me angry.

ကျွန်တော် ဒေါသဖြစ်ခဲ့တယ်။

Dear friends, for centuries we were taught anger is bad.

ဘမိတ်ဆွေတို့ရေ ဒေါသဟာမကောင်းဘူးလို့ ရာစုများစွာထဲက သင်ကြားခဲ့ရတယ်။

Our parents, teachers, priests --

ကျွန်တော်တို့ရဲ့ မိဘ၊ ဆရာ၊ ဘုန်းတော်ကြီးများ --

everyone taught us how to control and suppress our anger.

အားလုံးက ဒေါသကိုဘယ်လိုမျိုသိပ် ထိန်းသိမ်းရမယ် ဆိုတာသင်ကြားပေးကြတယ်။

But I ask why?

ဒါပေမဲ့ဘာ​ေကြာင့်လဲလို့ မေးချင်တယ်။

Why can't we convert our anger for the larger good of society?

ဘာကြောင့်ကျွန်ုပ်တို့အမျက်ဒေါသ ကိုလူ့အဖွဲ့အစည်းရဲ့ကောင်း မှုအတွက်

Why can't we use our anger

ပြောင်းလွှဲအသုံးမချနိုင်တာလဲ။ ကျွန်ုပ်တို့အမျက်ဒေါသ တွေကိုသုံးပြီး

to challenge and change the evils of the world?

That I tried to do.

ကျွန်တော်ဒါလုပ်ဖို့ကြိုးစားခဲ့တယ်။

Friends,

မိတ်ဆွေတို့၊

most of the brightest ideas came to my mind out of anger.

ကျွန်တော့်ရဲ့ အကောင်းဆုံး စိတ်ကူးတွေက ဒေါသထွက်တဲ့အချိန်မှာ ပေါ်လာတတ်တယ်။

Like when I was 35 and sat in a locked-up, tiny prison.

အသက် ၃၅ မှာသော့ခတ်ထားပြီး ထောင်သေးသေးလေးမှာ ထိုင်နေရစဉ်က

The whole night, I was angry.

တညလုံးဒေါသထွက်ခဲ့တယ်။

But it has given birth to a new idea.

ဒါပေမဲ့ ဒီမှာ စိတ်ကူးကောင်းလေး မွေးဖွားလာတယ်။

But I will come to that later on.

ဒီအကြောင်းကိုတော်ကြာမှ ပြန်ကောက်မယ်။

Let me begin with the story of how I got a name for myself.

ကျွန်တော် နာမည်ရလာတဲ့ ပုံပြင်လေးနှင့် စပါရစေ။

I had been a big admirer of Mahatma Gandhi since my childhood.

ကျွန်တော် ကလေးဘဝတည်းက မဟတ္တမဂန္ဓီကြီးကို အထူး လေးစားသူဖြစ်ပါတယ်။

Gandhi fought and lead India's freedom movement.

ဂန္ဓီကြီးက အိန္ဒိယနိုင်ငံရဲ့ လွတ်လပ်ရေး လှုပ်ရှားမှုကို ဦးဆောင်တိုက်ခဲ့တယ်။

But more importantly,

ဒါပေမဲ့ ပိုအရေးကြီးတာက

he taught us how to treat the most vulnerable sections,

the most deprived people, with dignity and respect.

And so, when India was celebrating

Mahatma Gandhi's birth centenary in 1969 --

မဟတ္တမဂန္ဒီရဲ့ ဖွားမြင်ခြင်း ရာစုနှစ်ကို ကျင်းပချိန်မှာ --

at that time I was 15 --

ကျွန်တော့် အသက် ၁၅ နှစ်ရှိပြီ

an idea came to my mind.

ကျွန်တော် စိတ်ကူးတခုရခဲ့တယ်။

Why can't we celebrate it differently?

ကျွန်တော်တို့တခြားနည်းနှင့် မကျင်းပနိုင်ဘူးလား။။

I knew, as perhaps many of you might know,

ကျွန်တော်သိတယ်၊ ခင်ဗျားတို့ တော်တော်များများ လည်းသိကြမှာပါပဲ။

that in India, a large number of people are born in the lowest segment of caste.

အိန္ဒိယမှာ လူအများအပြားဟာ ဇာတ်အနိမ့်ဆုံး အပိုင်းမှာမွေးဖွားကြတယ်။

And they are treated as untouchables.

နောက်သူတို့ဟာ ထိတွေ့မရနိုင်သူများလို ဆက်ဆံခံရတယ်

These are the people --

ဒီလူတွေက---

forget about allowing them to go to the temples,

ဘုရားကျောင်းတွေထဲ ပေးသွားဖို့မစဉ်းစားနှင့်

they cannot even go into the houses and shops of high-caste people.

သူတို့ကဇာတ်မြင့်သူတွေရဲ့ အိမ်တွေ ဆိုင်တွေကိုတောင် မသွားနိုင်ဘူး။

So I was very impressed with the leaders of my town

ကျွန်တော့်မြို့ က ဇာတ်စနစ်နှင့် ထိတွေ့မရနိုင်သူတွေ အကြောင်းတွေ

who were speaking very highly against the caste system and untouchability

နောက် ဂန္ဒီကြီးရဲ့ကြိုက်ဆုံး စံတွေအကြောင်း

and talking of Gandhian ideals.

So inspired by that, I thought, let us set an example

by inviting these people to eat food cooked and served

ဒီလူတွေကို ဖိတ်ခေါ်ကျွေးမွေးခြင်းဖြင့်

by the untouchable community.

စံနမူနာလေးတင်ရအောင် ဆိုတဲ့စိတ်ကူးရလာတယ်။

I went to some low-caste, so-called untouchable, people,

အပယ်ခံလို့ဆိုတဲ့ ဇာတ်နိမ့်တွေဆီသွားပြီး သူတို့တွေကို

tried to convince them, but it was unthinkable for them.

နားချခဲ့ပေမဲ့ သူတို့အတွက်တော့ ဒါဟာ တွေးလို့ကိုမရနိူင်တာပါ။

They told me, "No, no. It's not possible. It never happened."

သူတို့ကကျွန်တော့်ကို "မဟုတ်ဘူး၊ မဟုတ်ဘူး ဒါမဖြစ်နိုင်ဘူး။တစ်ခါမှ မဖြစ်ခဲ့ဘူး။"

I said, "Look at these leaders,

ကျွန်တော်က "ဒီခေါင်ဆောင်တွေကို ကြည့်စမ်းပါ

they are so great, they are against untouchability.

သူတို့ဘယ်​ေလာက် မြင့်မြတ်လဲ၊ အပယ်ခံဆိုတာကို သူတို့ဆန့်ကျင်ကြတယ်။

They will come. If nobody comes, we can set an example."

These people thought that I was too naive.

Finally, they were convinced.

နောက်ဆုံးတော့ လက်ခံလိုက်ကြတယ်။

My friends and I took our bicycles and invited political leaders.

သူငယ်ချင်းများတွေနဲ့ စက်ဘီးစီးပြီး နိုင်ငံရေး ခေါင်းဆောင်တွေကိုလိုက်ဖိတ်တယ်။

And I was so thrilled, rather, empowered

ကျွန်တော်ပျော်မြူးခဲ့တယ်၊ မဟုတ်ဘူး သူတို့တဦးချင်းနှင့်တွေ့ပြီး

to see that each one of them agreed to come.

သူတို့ကလည်း လာဖို့သဘောတူကြတော့ အားရမိတယ်လို့ ခံစားရတယ်၊

I thought, "Great idea. We can set an example.

တွေးမိလိုက်တာက "ကောင်းတဲ့အကြံ​ပဲ တို့တွေ စံတင်နိုင်တော့မယ်။

We can bring about change in the society."

လူ့အသိုင်းအဝိုင်းမှာ အပြောင်းအလဲ တို့လုပ်နိုင်တော့မယ်။

The day has come.

ထိုနေ့ကိုရောက်လာတယ်။

All these untouchables, three women and two men,

ဒီအပယ်ခံတွေအားလုံး အမျိုးသ္မီး၃ဦး အမျိုးသား၂ဦး

they agreed to come.

လာဖို့ သဘောတူထားတယ်။

I could recall that they had used the best of their clothes.

မှတ်မိသေးတယ်၊ ဝတ်ကောင်းစားလှတွေ သူတို့တွေဝတ်လာတယ်။

They brought new utensils.

အိုးခွက်အသစ်တွေလည်း သယ်ဆောင်လာတယ်။

They had taken baths hundreds of times

ရေလည်း အခါတရာလောက် ချိုးခဲ့ကြတယ်။

because it was unthinkable for them to do.

ဒါဟာ သူတို့အတွက် စဉ်းစားလို့တောင်မရဘူး။

It was the moment of change.

ဒါကပြောင်းလဲခြင်း တစ်ဒင်္ဂဖြစ်တယ်။

They gathered. Food was cooked.

သူတို့စုကြတယ်၊ အစားအသောက်တွေလဲ ချက်ပြုတ်ပြီးသွားပြီ။

It was 7 o'clock.

ခုနှစ်နာရီထိုးပြီ။

By 8 o'clock, we kept on waiting,

ရှစ်နာရီ --ကျွန်တော်တို့ ဆက်ဆောင့်နေတယ်။

because it's not very uncommon that the leaders become late,

ဘာကြောင့်လဲဆို ခေါင်းဆောင်ကြီးတွေ နောက်ကျတာမဆန်းပါဘူး။

for an hour or so.

နောက်တစ်နာရီလောက်

So after 8 o'clock, we took our bicycles and went to these leaders' homes,

၈နာရီထိုးပြီးကျွန်တော်တို့စက်ဘီးတွေနဲ့ ခေါင်းဆောင်ကြီးတွေအိမ်တွေကို

just to remind them.

သတိပေးဖို့ လိုက်သွားကြတယ်။

One of the leader's wives told me,

ခေါင်းဆောင်တစ်ဦးရဲ့ ဇနီးက

"Sorry, he is having some headache, perhaps he cannot come."

"ဝမ်းနည်းပါတယ်။ သူခေါင်းကိုက်နေလို့ လာနိုင်မယ်မထင်ဘူး

I went to another leader

နောက်ခေါင်းဆောင်တစ်ဦးထံ လိုက်သွားတယ်။

and his wife told me, "Okay, you go, he will definitely join."

သူ့ဇနီးက "အေးအေးမင်းသွားလိုက် သူအသေအချာလာမယ်။

So I thought that the dinner will take place,

ဒီတော့ ကျွန်တော်ထင်လိုက်တယ်၊ ညစာစားပွဲက ဖြစ်တော့ဖြစ်မယ်

though not at that large a scale.

သိပ်မကြီးကျယ်ရင်နေမယ်။

I went back to the venue, which was a newly built Mahatma Gandhi Park.

ကျင်းပမယ့်နေရာ ဖြစ်တဲ အသစ်ဆာက်ထားတဲ့ မဟတ္တမဂန္ဒီ ပန်းခြံကိုပြန်သွားတယ်။

It was 10 o'clock.

အခု ၁၀ နာရီထိုးပြီ။

None of the leaders showed up.

ဘယ်ခေါင်ဆောင်မှ ပေါ်မလာဘူး။

That made me angry.

ဒါကျွန်တော့်ကို ဒေါသထွက်စေတယ်။

I was standing, leaning against Mahatma Gandhi's statue.

ကျွန်တော် မဟတ္တမဂန္ဒီ ရုပ်တုကို မှီပြီးရပ်နေတယ်

I was emotionally drained, rather exhausted.

ကျွန်တော် စိတ်ခံစားမှု ခန်းခြောက်နေတယ် - မဟုတ်ဘူးမောပန်း နေတယ်။

Then I sat down where the food was lying.

နောက်အစားအစာတွေ ခင်းကျင်းထားတဲ့ နေရာမှာ ထိုင်ချလိုက်တယ်။

I kept my emotions on hold.

ကျွန်တော့် စိတ်ခံစားမှု ထိန်းထားတယ်။

But then, when I took the first bite,

ဒါပေမဲ့ ပထမတလုတ်ကို စားလိုက်ရင်ဘဲ

I broke down in tears.

မျက်ရည်တွေ ကျလာတယ်။

And suddenly I felt a hand on my shoulder.

နောက်ရုတ်တရက် ကျွန်တော့်ပခုံးပေါ်မှာ တစ်ဦးတယောက်ရဲ့ လက်ကို ခံစားရတယ်။

And it was the healing, motherly touch of an untouchable woman.

အပယ်ခံ အသိုင်းအဝိုင်းမှ အမျိုးသမီး တစ်ဦးရဲ့ အနာရောဂါငြိမ်းစေတဲ့

And she told me, "Kailash, why are you crying?

မိခင်ရဲ့ထိတွေ့ မှုဖြစ်နေတယ်။ နောက်သူမက "Kailash မင်းဘာလို့ ငိုနေတာလဲ?"

You have done your bit.

မင်းလုပ်စရာ ရှိတာလုပ်ပြီးပြီ

You have eaten the food cooked by untouchables,

အပယ်ခံတွေချက်တဲ့ အစားအစာတွေစားပြီးပြီ

which has never happened in our memory."

ဒါဟာ တို့မှတ်မိသလောက် တခါမှမဖြစ်ခဲ့ဘူး"

She said, "You won today."

သူမက "မင်းဒီနေ့နိုင်တယ်"

And my friends, she was right.

မိတ်ဆွေတို့ရေ၊ သူမမှန်ပါတယ်။

I came back home, a little after midnight,

ကျွန်တော်သန်းခေါင်ကျော်လောက်မှ အိမ်ပြန်ရောက်တယ်

shocked to see that several high-caste elderly people

နောက်ကျွန်တော်တို့အိမ်ဝင်းထဲမှာ ဇာတ်မြင့် သက်ကြီးလူကြီး

were sitting in my courtyard.

အချို့ထိုင်နေတာတွေ့ပြီး တော်တော် အံ့အားသင့်သွားတယ်

I saw my mother and elderly women were crying

ကျွန်တော့်အမေနဲ့အသက်ကြီးတဲ့ အမျိုသ္မီးတွေ ငိုကြွေးပြီး

and they were pleading to these elderly people

ဒီသက်ကြီးရွယ်အိုတွေကို တောင်းပန်နေကြတယ်။

because they had threatened to outcaste my whole family.

ဘာကြောင့်လဲဆို မိသားစုတစုလုံးကို ပယ်ထုတ်ပစ်မယ်လို့ခြိမ်းခြောက်ခဲ့လို့လေ။

And you know, outcasting the family is the biggest social punishment

နောက် စဉ်းစားလို့ရသလောက် မိသားစုလိုက် ဇာတ်ထဲကထုတ်ပစ်တာဟာ

one can think of.

အကြီးမားဆုံး လူမှုရေးပြစ်ဒဏ်ဖြစ်ပါတယ်။

Somehow they agreed to punish only me, and the punishment was purification.

တနည်း ကျွန်တော့်ကိုပဲ အပြစ်ပေးဖို့ သဘောတူခဲ့ပြီး သန့်စင်ခြင်းလုပ်တာက ပြစ်ဒဏ်ပေါ့။

That means I had to go 600 miles away from my hometown

အဓိပ္ပါယ်က ကျွန်တော့်ဇာတိမြို့ ကနေ မိုင် ၆၀၀ ဝေးတဲ့

to the River Ganges to take a holy dip.

ဂင်္ဂါ မြစ်ကရေထဲသန့်ရှင်း စင်ကြယ်အောင် နှစ်ရမယ်။

And after that, I should organize a feast for priests, 101 priests,

ထို့နောက်ဘုန်းတော်ကြီး ၁၀၁ ပါးအတွက်ပွဲ စီမံပေးပြီး

wash their feet and drink that water.

သူတို့ ခြေထောက်များဆေးပြီး ထိုရေကိုသောက်ရမယ်။

It was total nonsense,

ဒါဟာ အဓိပ္ပါယ်လုံးဝမရှိဘူး။

and I refused to accept that punishment.

နောက်ကျွန်တော်ဒီပြစ်ဒဏ်ကို လက်ခံဖို့ငြင်းလိုက်တယ်။

How did they punish me?

သူတို့ကျွန်တော်ကိုဘယ်လို ဒါဏ်ခတ်သလဲ?

I was barred from entering into my own kitchen and my own dining room,

ကျွန်တော့်ကို ကိုယ်ပိုင်မီးဖိုချောင်နဲ့ထမင်း စားခန်းသို့ ဝင်ရောက်ခွင့်ပိတ်ပင်ခဲ့တယ်။

my utensils were separated.

ကျွန်တော့်အိုးခွက် ပန်းကန်တွေကိုခွဲထားတယ်။

But the night when I was angry, they wanted to outcaste me.

ထိုညက ကျွန်တော် ဒေါသဖြစ်ခဲ့တယ်။ ကျွန်တော့်ကို ဇာတ်ထဲက ထုတ်ပယ်ချင်တယ်။

But I decided to outcaste the entire caste system.

ဒါပေမဲ့ ထိုညက ကျွန်တော် ဒီဇာတ်စနစ် တခုလုံးကို ထုတ်ပယ်လိုက်တယ်။

And that was possible because the beginning would have been

ဒါလုပ်နိုင်ဖို့ရာ ပထမဆုံး

to change the family name, or surname,

မိသားစုအမည် သို့မဟုတ် မျိုးရိုးအမည်ကို ပြောင်းဖို့ဘဲ

because in India, most of the family names are caste names.

ဘာကြောင့်လဲဆို အိန္ဒိယမှာ မိသားစုအမည် များက ဇာတ်အမည်ဖြစ်လို့ဘဲ။

So I decided to drop my name.

ဒီတော့ ကျွန်တော့် အမည်ကို ပြောင်းဖို့ ဆုံးဖြတ်လိုက်တယ်။

And then, later on, I gave a new name to myself: Satyarthi,

နောက်အနည်းငယ်ကြာတော့ ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကို အမည်အသစ်ပေးလိုက်တယ်- Satyarthi,

that means, "seeker of truth."

အဓိပ္ပါယ်က "အမှန်တရားကိုရှာဖွေသူ"

And that was the beginning of my transformative anger.

Friends, maybe one of you can tell me,

မိတ်ဆွေများ သင်တို့အထဲက တစ်ဦးတယောက်က များပြောနိုင်မလား

what was I doing before becoming a children's rights activist?

ကျွန်တော် ကလေး အခွင့်အရေးလှုပ်ရှားသူ မဖြစ်မီ ဘာလုပ်နေခဲ့လဲဆိုတာ။

Does anybody know?

တစ်ယောက်ယောက်များ သိမလား။

No.

မသိဘူး။

I was an engineer, an electrical engineer.

ကျွန်တော်က အင်ဂျင်နီယာ၊ လျှပ်စစ်အင်ဂျင်နီယာ လုပ်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။

And then I learned how the energy

ပြီးတော့ ကျွန်တော်သင်ယူတာက စွမ်းအင်ကို ဘယ်လို

of burning fire, coal,

လောင်ကျွမ်းနေတဲ့မီး၊ မီးသွေးများ

the nuclear blast inside the chambers,

အခန်းများ အတွင်းမှ နျူကလီးယား ပေါက်ကွဲမှုများ

raging river currents,

ပြင်းထန်စွာလှုပ်ရှားထကြွ နေတဲ့မြစ်ရေ စီးကြောင်း များ

fierce winds,

ခက်ထန်ကြမ်းကြုတ်သော လေများကို

could be converted into the light and lives of millions.

အလင်းသို့ ပြောင်းပြီး သန်းပေါင်းများစွာသော ဘဝများ ပြောင်းလဲနိုင်ကြောင်း။

I also learned how the most uncontrollable form of energy

ကျွန်တော် ဘယ်လို မချုပ်တည်း မရနိုင်တဲ့ စွမ်းအင်ပုံစံကိုလည်း

could be harnessed for good and making society better.

လူ့အဖွဲ့အစည်း ပိုမိုကောင်းမွန်ဖို့ အသုံးချနိုင်ကြောင်း သင်ရတယ်။

So I'll come back to the story of when I was caught in the prison:

ဒီတော့ ကျွန်တော် အချုပ်ခံ ခဲ့ရတဲ့ပုံပြင်ကို ပြန်ကောက်မယ်။

I was very happy freeing a dozen children from slavery,

ကလေးတဒါဇင်ကို ကျွန်ဘဝမှလွတ်ပေးပြီး သူတို့မိဘတွေ လက်အပ်တာကို

handing them over to their parents.

ကျွန်တော် အရမ်းကို ပျော်နေပါတယ်

I cannot explain my joy when I free a child.

ကလေးတယောက်ကို လွတ်ပေးပြီး ရရှိသော ပျော်ရွှင်မှုကို ရှင်းမပြတတ်ဘူး။

I was so happy.

ကျွန်တော် အရမ်းကို ပျော်ပါတယ်။

But when I was waiting for my train to come back to my hometown, Delhi,

ဒါပေမဲ့ ကျွန်တော့်ဇာတိမြို့ ဒေလီကို ပြန်ဖို့ရထားကို စောင့်ဆိုင်းနေခိုက်

I saw that dozens of children were arriving;

ဒါဇင်ချီတဲ့ ကလေးတွေ ရောက်လာနေတာ မြင်ရတယ်။

they were being trafficked by someone.

သူတို့ကို တယောက်ယောက်က ကုန်ကူးနေတာ၊

I stopped them, those people.

ကျွန်တော် ဒီလူတွေကို တားလိုက်တယ်။

I complained to the police.

ရဲကို တိုင်လိုက်တယ်။

So the policemen, instead of helping me,

ဒီတော့ ဒီရဲတွေက ကျွန်တော့်ကို မကူညီတဲ့အပြင်

And that was the night of anger

when one of the brightest and biggest ideas was born.

I thought that if I keep on freeing 10 children, and 50 more will join,

Not only that, but this first-ever consumer's power, or consumer's campaign

maybe chocolate, maybe apparel, maybe shoes -- it has gone beyond.

My anger at the age of 11,

I created a book bank at the age of 11.

Later on, I cofounded

the world's single largest civil society campaign for education

that is the Global Campaign for Education.

လှုံ့ဆော်ရေး ပူးတွဲတည်ထောင်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။

That has helped in changing the whole thinking towards education

from the charity mode to the human rights mode,

and that has concretely helped the reduction of out-of-school children

by half in the last 15 years.

My anger at the age of 27,

to free that girl who was about to be sold to a brothel,

has given me an idea

to go for a new strategy of raid and rescue,

And I am so lucky and proud to say that it is not one or 10 or 20,

I knew that we needed global policies.

and that has also resulted in a new international convention

to protect the children who are in the worst forms.

And the concrete result was that the number of child laborers globally

has gone down by one third in the last 15 years.

Anger is within each one of you,

and I will share a secret for a few seconds:

that if we are confined in the narrow shells of egos,

I am urging you to become angry.
