Today, I am going to talk about anger.

आज मैं आपसे क्रोध के बारे में बात करना चाहता हूँ

When I was 11,

जब मैं ग्यारह साल का था

seeing some of my friends leaving the school

मेरे कुछ दोस्तों को स्कूल छोड़ना पड़ा

because their parents could not afford textbooks

made me angry.

मुझे ये देख के बहुत क्रोध आया

When I was 27,

hearing the plight of a desperate slave father

whose daughter was about to be sold to a brothel

जिसकी बेटी को वेश्यालय को बेचा जा रहा था,

made me angry.

मुझे बहुत क्रोध आया

At the age of 50,

५० साल की उम्र में

lying on the street, in a pool of blood,

जब मैं सड़क पर खून में लथपथ पड़ा था

along with my own son,

अपने बेटे के साथ

made me angry.

तब मुझे बहुत क्रोध आया

Dear friends, for centuries we were taught anger is bad.

दोस्तों, हमे सदियों से बताया गया है की क्रोध करना गलत है

Our parents, teachers, priests --

हमारे माता पिता, गुरु और सज्जनों

everyone taught us how to control and suppress our anger.

सबने सिखाया है की अपने क्रोध को दबाओ

But I ask why?

मैं पूछता हूँ आखिर क्यों ?

Why can't we convert our anger for the larger good of society?

क्यों हम अपने क्रोध को समाज के भले के लिए इस्तेमाल नहीं कर सकते

Why can't we use our anger

क्यों हम अपने क्रोध का इस्तेमाल

to challenge and change the evils of the world?

सामाजिक बुराइयाँ मिटाने में नहीं कर सकते

That I tried to do.

मैंने ये करने की कोशिश की

Friends,

दोस्तों,

most of the brightest ideas came to my mind out of anger.

मेरे सबसे प्रभावी विचार मेरे क्रोध में से निकल कर आये

Like when I was 35 and sat in a locked-up, tiny prison.

उदाहरणार्थ, जब मैं ३५ साल का था, एक छोटी सी जेल में बंद रहा रात भर

The whole night, I was angry.

मुझे सारी रात बहुत गुस्सा आया

But it has given birth to a new idea.

मगर उससे एक नयी सोच मिली

But I will come to that later on.

Let me begin with the story of how I got a name for myself.

आज मैं आपको मैंने मेरा नाम कैसे बनाया उसकी कहानी सुनना चाहता हूँ

I had been a big admirer of Mahatma Gandhi since my childhood.

मैं बचपन से ही गांधी जी का बड़ा आदर करता था

Gandhi fought and lead India's freedom movement.

गांधी जी खड़े हुए और देश के स्वतंत्रता आंदोलन का नेतृत्व किया

But more importantly,

मगर सबसे महत्वपूर्ण,

he taught us how to treat the most vulnerable sections,

उन्होंने हमे समाज के कमज़ोर वर्ग से

the most deprived people, with dignity and respect.

आदर और प्रेम से व्यवहार करना सिखाया

And so, when India was celebrating

तो जब भारत १९६९ में गांधी जी कि

Mahatma Gandhi's birth centenary in 1969 --

जन्म शताब्दी मना रहा था,

at that time I was 15 --

मैं १५ साल का था,

an idea came to my mind.

और मेरे मन में एक विचार आया

Why can't we celebrate it differently?

हम इसे अलग तरह से क्यों नहीं मना सकते है

I knew, as perhaps many of you might know,

मैं जानता था, जैसा की आप सब भी जानते होंगे

that in India, a large number of people are born in the lowest segment of caste.

की भारत की अधिकांश जनसंख्या समाज के निचले तबके में जन्म लेती है

And they are treated as untouchables.

और उन्हें अछूत माना जाता हैं

These are the people --

ये वो लोग है जिन्हें

forget about allowing them to go to the temples,

मंदिर में जाना तो दूर की बात,

they cannot even go into the houses and shops of high-caste people.

ऊची जाती के घर और दुकानो में भी जाना वर्जित हैं

So I was very impressed with the leaders of my town

तो मैं शहर के नेताओ से बहुत प्रभावित था

who were speaking very highly against the caste system and untouchability

जो इस जाती प्रथा और अस्पृश्यता के खिलाफ खुल के बोल रहे थे

and talking of Gandhian ideals.

और गांधी जी के आदर्शों की बात कर रहे थे

So inspired by that, I thought, let us set an example

तो इस से प्रेरित होकर, मैंने सोचा की एक उदाहरण स्थापित करते हैं

by inviting these people to eat food cooked and served

इन लोगो को दवात का बुलावा देकर

by the untouchable community.

जो अछूतों के हाथों परोसी और पकायी जाएगी

I went to some low-caste, so-called untouchable, people,

tried to convince them, but it was unthinkable for them.

They told me, "No, no. It's not possible. It never happened."

I said, "Look at these leaders,

मैंने कहा "इन नेताओं की ओर देखिये,

they are so great, they are against untouchability.

ये बहुत महान है, ये अस्पृश्यता के खिलाफ है

They will come. If nobody comes, we can set an example."

अगर कोई नहीं आया तो भी ये लोग तो आएंगे और हम एक उदहारण बनेंगे"

These people thought that I was too naive.

उन्हें लगा मैं नासमझ हूँ

Finally, they were convinced.

अंततः वो मान ही गए

My friends and I took our bicycles and invited political leaders.

मैं और मेरे दोस्त अपनी साइकिल पर नेताओं को निमंत्रण देने निकल पड़े

And I was so thrilled, rather, empowered

मैं बहुत उत्साहित था, बल्कि सशक्त

to see that each one of them agreed to come.

ये देख के उन में से एक आने को राज़ी था

I thought, "Great idea. We can set an example.

मैंने कहा "चलो अब हम एक उदहारण पेश करेंगे

We can bring about change in the society."

हम समाज में बदलाव लाएंगे "

The day has come.

दावत का दिन आया

All these untouchables, three women and two men,

सभी अछूत, तीन औरत और दो आदमी

they agreed to come.

वो आने को राज़ी हुए

I could recall that they had used the best of their clothes.

मुझे याद है वो अच्छे से सज-धज के आये थे

They brought new utensils.

साथ में नये बर्तन भी थे

They had taken baths hundreds of times

कइयों बार स्नान किया था

because it was unthinkable for them to do.

क्यूंकि ये उनके लिए अभूतपूर्व था

It was the moment of change.

ये बदलाव का समय था

They gathered. Food was cooked.

वो इक्कठा हुए भोजन पकाया गया

It was 7 o'clock.

शाम के सात बज रहे थे

By 8 o'clock, we kept on waiting,

आठ बजे तक, हम इंतज़ार करते रहे

because it's not very uncommon that the leaders become late,

नेताओं के लिए देर से आना कोई नयी बात नहीं थी

for an hour or so.

एक घंटे इंतज़ार किया

So after 8 o'clock, we took our bicycles and went to these leaders' homes,

फिर आठ बजे हम अपनी साइकिल से नेताओं के घर गए

just to remind them.

उन्हें याद दिलाने मात्र के लिए

One of the leader's wives told me,

एक नेता की पत्नी ने हमे बताया की

"Sorry, he is having some headache, perhaps he cannot come."

"माफ़ कीजिये, उनके सर में दर्द है तो वो नहीं आ पाएंगे"

I went to another leader

तो मैं दूसरे नेता के पास गया

and his wife told me, "Okay, you go, he will definitely join."

और उनकी पत्नी ने कहा " आप चलिए हम ज़रूर आएंगे"

So I thought that the dinner will take place,

तो मैंने सोचा की चलो दावत तो होगी

though not at that large a scale.

भले ही छोटे स्तर पर ही सही

I went back to the venue, which was a newly built Mahatma Gandhi Park.

मैं वापिस दावत स्थल वापिस आया, जो की नया बना महात्मा गांधी पार्क था

It was 10 o'clock.

अभी दस बज रहा था

None of the leaders showed up.

कोई भी नेता नहीं आया

That made me angry.

मुझे इस बात पर बहुत क्रोध आया

I was standing, leaning against Mahatma Gandhi's statue.

मैं गांधी जी की प्रतिमा से टिक कर खड़ा था

I was emotionally drained, rather exhausted.

मैं काफी भावुक और थका हुआ था

Then I sat down where the food was lying.

फेर मैं जहाँ खाना रखा था वहाँ जा कर बैठ गया

I kept my emotions on hold.

मैंने अपनी भावनाओ को बंधे रखा

But then, when I took the first bite,

मगर जैसे ही मैंने पहला निवाला लिया

I broke down in tears.

मेरे आंसूं बह पड़े

And suddenly I felt a hand on my shoulder.

और अचानक मैंने अपने कंधे पर एक हाथ महसूस किया

And it was the healing, motherly touch of an untouchable woman.

और वो एक अछूत औरत का हिम्मत भर देने वाला मातृत्व स्पर्श था

And she told me, "Kailash, why are you crying?

और उसने मुझसे कहा " कैलाश, तुम रो क्यों रहे हो ?

You have done your bit.

तुमने अपने हिस्से का काम कर दिया है

You have eaten the food cooked by untouchables,

तुमने अछूत द्वारा पकाया खाना खाया है

which has never happened in our memory."

जो मैंने आज तक कभी नहीं होते देखा है"

She said, "You won today."

उसने कहा,"आज तुम्हरी जीत हुई है"

And my friends, she was right.

और दोस्तों, वो सही थी

I came back home, a little after midnight,

मैं घर वापिस आया आधी रात के करीब

shocked to see that several high-caste elderly people

तो देखा की ऊची जाती के कई बुजुर्ग मेरे

were sitting in my courtyard.

घर के आँगन में बैठे हुए थे

I saw my mother and elderly women were crying

मेरी माँ और एक बुजुर्ग औरत रो रहे थे

and they were pleading to these elderly people

और वो इन बुजुर्ग लोगो से माफ़ी मांग रहे थे क्यूंकि

because they had threatened to outcaste my whole family.

उन्होंने मेरे पूरे परिवार को जाति बहिष्कृत की धमकी दी थी

And you know, outcasting the family is the biggest social punishment

और आप जानते है ये बहिष्कार सबसे बड़ा सामाजिक दंड है

one can think of.

जो किसी को दिया जा सकता है

Somehow they agreed to punish only me, and the punishment was purification.

किसी तरह वो सिर्फ मुझे दण्डित करने पर राज़ी हुए, सजा थी विशुद्धकरण

That means I had to go 600 miles away from my hometown

इसका मतलब मुझे घर से ६०० मील दूर जाना होगा

to the River Ganges to take a holy dip.

गंगा नदी में डुबकी लगाने

And after that, I should organize a feast for priests, 101 priests,

और उसके बाद मुझे १०१ पंडितो को भोजन करवाना होगा

wash their feet and drink that water.

और इनके पैर धो कर पीने पड़ेंगे

It was total nonsense,

ये बिलकुल बकवास था

and I refused to accept that punishment.

और मैंने दंड मानने से मन कर दिया

How did they punish me?

उन्होंने मुझे कैसे सजा दी फिर ?

I was barred from entering into my own kitchen and my own dining room,

मुझे अपनी ही रसोई और खाने के कमरे में आने से मन कर दिया

my utensils were separated.

मेरे बर्तन अलग कर दिए

But the night when I was angry, they wanted to outcaste me.

मगर जिस रात मैं गुस्सा था वो मुझे जाति बहिष्कृत करना चाहते थे

But I decided to outcaste the entire caste system.

मगर मैंने इस जाती प्रथा का ही भहिष्कार करने का फैसला कर लिया

And that was possible because the beginning would have been

और ये मुमकिन था, क्यूंकि शुरुआत खानदानी

to change the family name, or surname,

नाम या उपनाम बदल कर होगी

because in India, most of the family names are caste names.

क्यूंकि भारत में अधिकतर खानदानी नाम जाती सूचक होते है

So I decided to drop my name.

तो मैंने मेरा नाम छोड़ने का फैसला किया

And then, later on, I gave a new name to myself: Satyarthi,

और आगे चलके मैंने खुद को सत्यार्थी का नाम दिया

that means, "seeker of truth."

जिसका मतलब ह "सच की तलाश करने वाला"

And that was the beginning of my transformative anger.

और यहाँ से शुरुआत हुई मेरे परिवर्तनकारी क्रोध की

Friends, maybe one of you can tell me,

दोस्तों, शायद आप में से कोई मुझे बता सके

what was I doing before becoming a children's rights activist?

की बाल अधिकार के लिए लड़ने से पहले मैं क्या कर रहा था

Does anybody know?

क्या कोई जानता है ?

No.

नहीं।

I was an engineer, an electrical engineer.

मैं इंजीनियर था, इलेक्ट्रिकल इंजीनियर

And then I learned how the energy

और तब मैंने ये समझा की कैसे

of burning fire, coal,

आग जलने की, कोयला जलने की

the nuclear blast inside the chambers,

कक्षों के अंदर होते परमाणु विस्फोट की

raging river currents,

नदी की उग्र धाराओं की

fierce winds,

तूफानी हवाओं की

could be converted into the light and lives of millions.

ऊर्जा को प्रकाश में बदल कर लाखो ज़िंदगियाँ को बचाया जा सकता है

I also learned how the most uncontrollable form of energy

मैंने सीखा की कैसे सबसे उग्र ऊर्जा स्त्रोत

could be harnessed for good and making society better.

को समाज के भले के लिए उपयोग किया जा सकता है

So I'll come back to the story of when I was caught in the prison:

अब मैं वापिस आता हूँ उस जेल वाली रात के किस्से पर

I was very happy freeing a dozen children from slavery,

मैं बहुत खुश था एक दर्जन बच्चो को गुलामी आज़ाद करा कर

handing them over to their parents.

उन्हें उनके माँ-बाप के हवाले कर

I cannot explain my joy when I free a child.

मैं बता नहीं सकता की एक बच्चे को आज़ाद करा कर मुझे कितनी ख़ुशी होती है

I was so happy.

मैं बहुत खुश था

But when I was waiting for my train to come back to my hometown, Delhi,

लेकिन जब मैं अपने घर, दिल्ली जाने वाली ट्रैन का इंतज़ार कर रहा था

I saw that dozens of children were arriving;

मैंने ढेर सारे बच्चो को आते देखा

they were being trafficked by someone.

उनकी तस्करी की जा रही थी

I stopped them, those people.

मैंने उन लोगो को रोका

I complained to the police.

मैंने पुलिस को शिकायत करी

So the policemen, instead of helping me,

तो पुलिस, मेरी मदद करने की बजाये

they threw me in this small, tiny shell, like an animal.

मुझे ही, एक जानवर की तरह छोटे से पिंजरे में फेक दिया

And that was the night of anger

और वो रात क्रोध की रात थी

when one of the brightest and biggest ideas was born.

जब मेरे सबसे बेहतर और क्रांतिकारी विचार का जन्म हुआ

I thought that if I keep on freeing 10 children, and 50 more will join,

मैंने सोचा की मैं अगर ऐसे १० बच्चो को आज़ाद कराऊंगा तो वो ५० और ले आएंगे

that's not done.

ये बेमतलब था

And I believed in the power of consumers,

और मैं ग्राहकों की ताकत में विश्वास करता था

and let me tell you that this was the first time

और मैं आपको बता दूँ ये पहली बार था जब

when a campaign was launched by me or anywhere in the world,

मेरे या दुनिया में किसी और के द्वारा कोई अभियान शुरू किया

to educate and sensitize the consumers

जो ग्राहकों को समझदार और संवेदनशील बनाने पर आधारित था

to create a demand for child-labor-free rugs.

बालश्रम मुक्त गलीचों की मांग बढ़ने पर था

In Europe and America, we have been successful.

यूरोप और अमरीका मैं सफल हुए

And it has resulted in a fall in child labor

और इससे दक्षिण एशियाई देशों में

in South Asian countries by 80 percent.

Not only that, but this first-ever consumer's power, or consumer's campaign

इतना ही नहीं, पहली बार ग्राहकों की ताकत और ग्राहकों की अभियान

has grown in other countries and other industries,

दूसरें देशों और दूसरें व्यवसायों में भी बढे है

maybe chocolate, maybe apparel, maybe shoes -- it has gone beyond.

चॉक्लेट हो या कपडे हो या फिर जूते हो, ये बहुत आगे निकल गया है

My anger at the age of 11,

११ साल की उम्र पर मेरा गुस्सा

when I realized how important education is for every child,

जब मैंने ये समझा की बच्चों के लिए पढाई कितनी आवशयक है

I got an idea to collect used books and help the poorest children.

मुझे एक तरकीब आई की क्यों न इस्तेमाल हो चुकी किताबों को गरीबों तक पहुचाये

I created a book bank at the age of 11.

११ साल की उम्र पर मैंने एक किताबों का बैंक बनाया

But I did not stop.

मगर मैं रुका नहीं

Later on, I cofounded

आगे मैंने मेरे साथी के साथ शिक्षा के लिए

the world's single largest civil society campaign for education

दुनिया के अकेली सबसे बड़े नागरिक समाज अभियान की स्थापना की

that is the Global Campaign for Education.

जिसका नाम है शिक्षा के लिए वैश्विक अभियान

That has helped in changing the whole thinking towards education

इसने शिक्षा के तरफ समाज के नज़रिये को बदल दिया

from the charity mode to the human rights mode,

शिक्षा के परोपकार के बदले जन्मसिद्ध अधिकार बताया जाने लगा

and that has concretely helped the reduction of out-of-school children

इससे स्कूल न जा सकने वाले बच्चो की गिनती को

by half in the last 15 years.

१५ साल में आधा कम कर दिया

My anger at the age of 27,

२७ साल की उम्र में मेरा गुस्सा,

to free that girl who was about to be sold to a brothel,

वेश्यालय को बेचीं जाने जा रही लड़कियों को आज़ाद करने के लिए,

has given me an idea

मुझे एक तरकीब दे गया

to go for a new strategy of raid and rescue,

एक नयी रणनीति ,छापे मार के बाल मजदूरों

freeing children from slavery.

को बाल शर्म से मुक्त करवाना

And I am so lucky and proud to say that it is not one or 10 or 20,

और मैं काफी खुशनसीब और गर्व महसूस करता हूँ ये बताते हुए के १ या १० या २० नहीं

but my colleagues and I have been able to physically liberate 83,000 child slaves

बल्कि मैं और मेरे साथियों ने मिल कर अभी तक कुल ८३००० बल शर्म से मुक्त करवाया है

and hand them over back to their families and mothers.

और उन्हें उनके परिवार और उनकी माँ के पास पहुंचायें है

I knew that we needed global policies.

मैं जानता था की हमे विश्वस्तरीय नीतियों की ज़रूरत थी

We organized the worldwide marches against child labor

हमने बाल मज़दूरी के खिलाफ विश्वस्तरीय पैदल यात्राओं का आयोजन किया

and that has also resulted in a new international convention

और इसके फलस्वरूप अत्यंत बुरे हालातों में मौजूद बच्चो की रक्षा करने

to protect the children who are in the worst forms.

हेतु एक अंतर्राष्ट्रीय सम्मेलन की शुरुवात हुई

And the concrete result was that the number of child laborers globally

और इसका सीधा असर ये हुआ के विश्वस्तर पर बल श्रम

has gone down by one third in the last 15 years.

पिछले १५ साल में एक तिहाई काम हो गया है।

So, in each case,

तो हर किस्से में

it began from anger,

शुरुवात क्रोध से हुई

turned into an idea,

and action.

So anger, what next?

Anger is a power, anger is an energy,

and the law of nature is that energy

can never be created and never be vanished, can never be destroyed.

So why can't the energy of anger be translated and harnessed

तो फिर क्रोध की ताकत को तब्दील करके एक

to create a better and beautiful world, a more just and equitable world?

बेहतर और सुन्दर और न्यायसंगतसमाज की समाज की संरचना क्यों नहीं करे ?

Anger is within each one of you,

क्रोध आप सबके अंदर है

and I will share a secret for a few seconds:

और मैं अब आपको एक राज़ बताऊंगा

that if we are confined in the narrow shells of egos,

की अगर हम अपने घमंड की छोटी कोठारी में

and the circles of selfishness,

और स्वार्थ के घेरो के अंदर बंधे रहे

then the anger will turn out to be hatred, violence, revenge, destruction.

तो ये क्रोध बदला,उग्रता, विनाश,नफरत में बदलेगा

But if we are able to break the circles,

मगर अगर हम इन घेरो से बहार आये तो

then the same anger could turn into a great power.

तो यही क्रोध अध्भुत ताकत में बदलेगा

We can break the circles by using our inherent compassion

हम इन घेरो को अपनी निहित करुणा से तोड़ सकते है

and connect with the world through compassion to make this world better.

और सहानुभूति के साथ समाज से जुड़कर उसे बेहतर बना सकते है

That same anger could be transformed into it.

इसी क्रोध को बदला जा सकता है

So dear friends, sisters and brothers, again, as a Nobel Laureate,

तो प्यारे दोस्तों,बहनो और भाइयो, एक नोबल पुरुस्कार विजेता के तौर पर

I am urging you to become angry.

मैं आपसे आग्रह करता हूँ क्रोधित होइये

I am urging you to become angry.

मैं आपसे आग्रह करता हूँ क्रोधित होइये

And the angriest among us

और जो सबसे ज़्यादा क्रोधित है हमारे बीच

is the one who can transform his anger into idea and action.

वो अपने क्रोध को तरकीबों और बदलाव में बदल लेगा।

they become so emotional

and the first tear of joy rolls down on her cheek,

और जब ख़ुशी का वो पहला आंसू उसकी आँखों से गिरता है

I see the glimpse of God in it -- this is my biggest inspiration.

तो उसमे मुझे ईश्वर की छवि दिखती है और ये मेरी सबसे बड़ी प्रेरणा होती है।

And I am so lucky that not once, as I said before, but thousands of times,

और मैं बहुत खुशनसीब हूँ की मैंने एक नहीं, बल्कि जैसा मैंने बताया, हज़ारों बार

I have been able to witness my God in the faces of those children

ईश्वर के दर्शन किये है इन बच्चो के चेहरे में

and they are my biggest inspirations.

और वे मेरी प्रेरणा के सबसे बड़े स्त्रोत है
