Today, I am going to talk about anger.

आज मी संताप या विषयावर बोलणार आहे.

When I was 11,

मी अकरा वर्षांचा असताना

seeing some of my friends leaving the school

माझ्या काही मित्रांना शिक्षण सोडताना पाहिलं.

because their parents could not afford textbooks

made me angry.

When I was 27,

hearing the plight of a desperate slave father

Dear friends, for centuries we were taught anger is bad.

प्रिय मित्रांनो, संताप हा वाईट असतो असं आपल्याला शतकानुशतकं शिकवलं गेलं.

Our parents, teachers, priests --

आपले पालक, गुरुजन आणि धर्मगुरू -

everyone taught us how to control and suppress our anger.

सर्वानीच आपल्याला, संतापावर ताबा ठेवून तो दडपून कसा टाकावा, हे शिकवलं

But I ask why?

पण मी विचारतो, "का?"

Why can't we convert our anger for the larger good of society?

आपण आपल्या संतापाचं रुपांतर समाजाच्या भल्यात का करू शकत नाही?

Why can't we use our anger

आपण आपला संताप,

to challenge and change the evils of the world?

जगातल्या वाईट गोष्टींशी सामना करून, त्या बदलण्यासाठी का वापरू शकत नाही?

That I tried to do.

हे करण्याचा मी प्रयत्न केला.

Friends,

मित्रांनो,

most of the brightest ideas came to my mind out of anger.

माझ्या बऱ्याचशा तेजस्वी कल्पनांचा जन्म संतापापोटीच झाला.

Like when I was 35 and sat in a locked-up, tiny prison.

उदाहरणार्थ, जेव्हा मी ३५ व्या वर्षी, एका छोट्या कारागृहात बंदी होतो,

The whole night, I was angry.

ती संपूर्ण रात्र मी संतापात काढली.

But it has given birth to a new idea.

But I will come to that later on.

Let me begin with the story of how I got a name for myself.

I had been a big admirer of Mahatma Gandhi since my childhood.

Gandhi fought and lead India's freedom movement.

But more importantly,

he taught us how to treat the most vulnerable sections,

the most deprived people, with dignity and respect.

And so, when India was celebrating

Mahatma Gandhi's birth centenary in 1969 --

at that time I was 15 --

an idea came to my mind.

Why can't we celebrate it differently?

I knew, as perhaps many of you might know,

that in India, a large number of people are born in the lowest segment of caste.

And they are treated as untouchables.

These are the people --

forget about allowing them to go to the temples,

they cannot even go into the houses and shops of high-caste people.

So I was very impressed with the leaders of my town

who were speaking very highly against the caste system and untouchability

and talking of Gandhian ideals.

आणि गांधीवादी आदर्शांबद्दल बोलत असत.

So inspired by that, I thought, let us set an example

by inviting these people to eat food cooked and served

by the untouchable community.

I went to some low-caste, so-called untouchable, people,

मी काही निम्न जातीच्या, तथाकथित अस्पृश्य, लोकांकडे गेलो.

tried to convince them, but it was unthinkable for them.

त्यांना पटवून देण्याचा प्रयत्न केला. पण हे त्यांच्या आकलनाबाहेरचं होतं.

They told me, "No, no. It's not possible. It never happened."

ते म्हणाले, " छे छे. हे अशक्य आहे. असं आजपर्यंत कधीच घडलं नाही."

I said, "Look at these leaders,

मी म्हणालो, " हे नेते पहा,"

they are so great, they are against untouchability.

हे महान आहेत. यांचा अस्पृश्यतेला विरोध आहे.

They will come. If nobody comes, we can set an example."

ते येतील. कुणीच आलं नाही, तर आपण एक उदाहरण घालून देऊ.

These people thought that I was too naive.

त्या लोकांना मी अगदी भोळसट वाटलो.

Finally, they were convinced.

शेवटी एकदाचे ते तयार झाले.

My friends and I took our bicycles and invited political leaders.

मी आणि माझे मित्र सायकली घेऊन गेलो. त्या राजकीय नेत्यांना आमंत्रण देऊन आलो.

And I was so thrilled, rather, empowered

त्यातल्या प्रत्येकाने आमंत्रण स्वीकारल्याचं पाहून

to see that each one of them agreed to come.

मी उत्तेजित झालो, नव्हे, माझ्या अंगावर मूठभर मांस चढलं.

I thought, "Great idea. We can set an example.

मला वाटलं, "किती महान कल्पना. आपण एक आदर्श समाजासमोर ठेवू.

We can bring about change in the society."

आपण समाजात परिवर्तन घडवून आणू."

The day has come.

तो दिवस उगवला.

All these untouchables, three women and two men,

हे सारे अस्पृश्य, तीन स्त्रिया आणि दोन पुरुष,

they agreed to come.

यायला कबूल झाले.

I could recall that they had used the best of their clothes.

त्यांनी आपल्याजवळचे सर्वोत्तम कपडे घातले होते, असं मला स्मरतं.

They brought new utensils.

त्यांनी नवीन भांडी आणली होती.

They had taken baths hundreds of times

त्यांनी शेकडो वेळा आंघोळी केल्या होत्या.

because it was unthinkable for them to do.

कारण असं काही करणं हे त्यांच्या आकलनाबाहेरचं होतं.

It was the moment of change.

परिवर्तनाचा क्षण आला होता.

They gathered. Food was cooked.

ते एकत्र जमले आणि त्यांनी स्वयंपाक केला.

It was 7 o'clock.

सात वाजले.

By 8 o'clock, we kept on waiting,

आठ वाजेपर्यंत आम्ही वाट बघत राहिलो.

because it's not very uncommon that the leaders become late,

कारण नेते उशीरा येणं हे तर नेहमीचंच आहे.

for an hour or so.

म्हणजे एखादा तास उशीरा येणं.

So after 8 o'clock, we took our bicycles and went to these leaders' homes,

तर, आठ वाजल्यानंतर आम्ही सायकली काढल्या आणि त्या नेत्यांच्या घरी गेलो.

just to remind them.

फक्त त्यांना आठवण करून देण्यासाठी.

One of the leader's wives told me,

त्यांच्यापैकी एका नेत्याच्या पत्नीने मला सांगितलं,

"Sorry, he is having some headache, perhaps he cannot come."

"माफ करा, त्यांचं डोकं दुखतं आहे. बहुतेक ते येऊ शकणार नाहीत."

I went to another leader

मी दुसऱ्या नेत्याकडे गेलो.

and his wife told me, "Okay, you go, he will definitely join."

आणि त्यांची पत्नी म्हणाली, "बरं. तुम्ही जा. ते नक्की येतील."

So I thought that the dinner will take place,

म्हणून मला वाटलं, हा जेवणाचा कार्यक्रम नक्की पार पडणार.

though not at that large a scale.

तितक्याशा मोठ्या प्रमाणावर का नसेना. मी आमच्या ठिकाणी परत गेलो.

I went back to the venue, which was a newly built Mahatma Gandhi Park.

हे ठिकाण म्हणजे नवीनच बांधलेलं महात्मा गांधी उद्यान.

It was 10 o'clock.

दहा वाजले.

None of the leaders showed up.

एकही नेता आला नाही.

That made me angry.

या गोष्टीचा मला संताप आला.

I was standing, leaning against Mahatma Gandhi's statue.

मी महात्मा गांधींच्या पुतळ्याला टेकून उभा होतो.

I was emotionally drained, rather exhausted.

मी मनातून थकलो होतो. पार गळून गेलो होतो.

Then I sat down where the food was lying.

जिथे जेवण ठेवलं होतं, तिथे मी बसलो.

I kept my emotions on hold.

मी माझ्या भावना काबूत ठेवल्या होत्या.

But then, when I took the first bite,

पण पहिला घास घेताक्षणी

I broke down in tears.

मला रडू कोसळलं.

And suddenly I felt a hand on my shoulder.

आणि अचानक मला खांद्यावर एका हाताचा स्पर्श जाणवला.

And it was the healing, motherly touch of an untouchable woman.

तो होता जखमा भरणारा मातेचा स्पर्श. एका अस्पृश्य स्त्रीचा स्पर्श.

And she told me, "Kailash, why are you crying?

आणि ती म्हणाली, "कैलाश, कशासाठी रडतो आहेस तू?"

You have done your bit.

You have eaten the food cooked by untouchables,

which has never happened in our memory."

She said, "You won today."

ती म्हणाली, "आज तू जिंकलास."

And my friends, she was right.

आणि माझ्या मित्रांनो, तिचं म्हणणं बरोबर होतं.

I came back home, a little after midnight,

मध्यरात्रीनंतर मी घरी परतलो.

shocked to see that several high-caste elderly people

अंगणात बसलेले अनेक उच्चवर्णीय वयोवृद्ध लोक पाहून

were sitting in my courtyard.

मला धक्काच बसला.

I saw my mother and elderly women were crying

माझी आई आणि घरातल्या इतर वयस्कर स्त्रिया रडत होत्या

and they were pleading to these elderly people

आणि त्या वयोवृद्ध लोकांच्या विनवण्या करीत होत्या.

because they had threatened to outcaste my whole family.

कारण त्यांनी आमच्या घराण्याला वाळीत टाकण्याची धमकी दिली होती.

And you know, outcasting the family is the biggest social punishment

one can think of.

Somehow they agreed to punish only me, and the punishment was purification.

That means I had to go 600 miles away from my hometown

ही शिक्षा म्हणजे शुद्धीकरण. म्हणजे मी गावापासून ६०० मैलावर जायचं.

to the River Ganges to take a holy dip.

गंगा नदीत बुडी मारून पवित्र व्हायचं.

And after that, I should organize a feast for priests, 101 priests,

आणि त्यानंतर १०१ पुरोहितांना भोजन द्यायचं.

wash their feet and drink that water.

त्यांचे पाय धुवून, ते चरणतीर्थ प्यायचं.

It was total nonsense,

हा शुद्ध मूर्खपणा होता.

and I refused to accept that punishment.

मी ही शिक्षा नाकारली.

How did they punish me?

मग त्यांनी मला कोणती शिक्षा केली?

I was barred from entering into my own kitchen and my own dining room,

त्यांनी मला माझ्याच स्वयंपाकघरात आणि भोजनघरात जायला बंदी केली.

my utensils were separated.

माझी भांडीकुंडी वेगळी ठेवण्यात आली.

But the night when I was angry, they wanted to outcaste me.

But I decided to outcaste the entire caste system.

पण मी संपूर्ण जातीव्यवस्थेलाच वाळीत टाकण्याचं ठरवलं.

And that was possible because the beginning would have been

आणि ते शक्य होतं, कारण त्याची सुरुवात

to change the family name, or surname,

स्वतःचं आडनाव बदलून करता आली असती.

because in India, most of the family names are caste names.

कारण भारतात, बरीचशी आडनावं ही जातींची नावं असतात.

So I decided to drop my name.

म्हणून मी स्वतःचं आडनाव गाळून टाकलं.

And then, later on, I gave a new name to myself: Satyarthi,

आणि त्यानंतर मी स्वतःला एक नवीन आडनाव दिलं : सत्यार्थी.

that means, "seeker of truth."

And that was the beginning of my transformative anger.

Friends, maybe one of you can tell me,

what was I doing before becoming a children's rights activist?

Does anybody know?

No.

I was an engineer, an electrical engineer.

मी एक इंजिनीयर होतो. इलेक्ट्रिकल इंजिनीयर.

And then I learned how the energy

आणि त्यावेळी मी शिकलो, की ऊर्जा

of burning fire, coal,

कोळसा जाळून निर्माण होणारी,

the nuclear blast inside the chambers,

अणुभट्टीतल्या स्फोटांतून निर्माण होणारी,

raging river currents,

रोरावणाऱ्या नदीच्या प्रवाहातली,

fierce winds,

सोसाट्याच्या वाऱ्यामधली,

could be converted into the light and lives of millions.

तिचं परिवर्तन केल्यावर, लक्षावधी लोकांची आयुष्यं उजळू शकते.

I also learned how the most uncontrollable form of energy

मी हे ही शिकलो की, अत्यंत दुर्दम्य रूपातली ऊर्जा कशा प्रकारे

could be harnessed for good and making society better.

समाजाच्या हितासाठी चांगल्या कामी जुंपता येते.

So I'll come back to the story of when I was caught in the prison:

तर आता, मी तुरुंगात कसा गेलो, त्या गोष्टीकडे वळतो.

I was very happy freeing a dozen children from slavery,

मी डझनभर मुलांना गुलामगिरीतून सोडवल्याच्या आनंदात होतो.

handing them over to their parents.

त्यांना त्यांच्या पालकांच्या हातात सोपवलं होतं.

I cannot explain my joy when I free a child.

एखाद्या मुलाला मुक्त केल्यावर मला अवर्णनीय आनंद होतो.

I was so happy.

But when I was waiting for my train to come back to my hometown, Delhi,

I saw that dozens of children were arriving;

they were being trafficked by someone.

I stopped them, those people.

I complained to the police.

So the policemen, instead of helping me,

they threw me in this small, tiny shell, like an animal.

And that was the night of anger

when one of the brightest and biggest ideas was born.

I thought that if I keep on freeing 10 children, and 50 more will join,

that's not done.

And I believed in the power of consumers,

and let me tell you that this was the first time

when a campaign was launched by me or anywhere in the world,

to educate and sensitize the consumers

In Europe and America, we have been successful.

And it has resulted in a fall in child labor

in South Asian countries by 80 percent.

Not only that, but this first-ever consumer's power, or consumer's campaign

has grown in other countries and other industries,

My anger at the age of 11,

when I realized how important education is for every child,

I got an idea to collect used books and help the poorest children.

I created a book bank at the age of 11.

But I did not stop.

Later on, I cofounded

the world's single largest civil society campaign for education

that is the Global Campaign for Education.

That has helped in changing the whole thinking towards education

from the charity mode to the human rights mode,

शिक्षण हा दानधर्म नसून, एक मानवी अधिकार ठरला आहे.

and that has concretely helped the reduction of out-of-school children

आणि त्यामुळे शाळेत न जाणाऱ्या मुलांची संख्या कमी होण्यात ठोस मदत झाली आहे.

by half in the last 15 years.

गेल्या १५ वर्षांत ही संख्या अर्धी झाली आहे.

My anger at the age of 27,

to free that girl who was about to be sold to a brothel,

has given me an idea

to go for a new strategy of raid and rescue,

freeing children from slavery.

And I am so lucky and proud to say that it is not one or 10 or 20,

but my colleagues and I have been able to physically liberate 83,000 child slaves

I knew that we needed global policies.

and that has also resulted in a new international convention

to protect the children who are in the worst forms.

And the concrete result was that the number of child laborers globally

has gone down by one third in the last 15 years.

So, in each case,

it began from anger,

turned into an idea,

and action.

So anger, what next?

Anger is a power, anger is an energy,

and the law of nature is that energy

can never be created and never be vanished, can never be destroyed.

So why can't the energy of anger be translated and harnessed

to create a better and beautiful world, a more just and equitable world?

एक जास्त चांगलं, सुंदर, निःपक्ष आणि न्यायपूर्ण जग निर्माण करण्यासाठी.

Anger is within each one of you,

आपल्यापैकी प्रत्येकाच्या मनात संताप असतोच.

and I will share a secret for a few seconds:

that if we are confined in the narrow shells of egos,

and the circles of selfishness,

स्वार्थाच्या वर्तुळात फिरत राहिलो,

then the anger will turn out to be hatred, violence, revenge, destruction.

तर संतापाचं रुपांतर तिरस्कार, हिंसा, सूड, नाश यात होईल.

But if we are able to break the circles,

पण आपण ही वर्तुळं भेदू शकलो,

then the same anger could turn into a great power.

तर त्याच संतापाचं रूपांतर एका महान शक्तीमध्ये होईल.

We can break the circles by using our inherent compassion

आपण आपल्या अंगभूत करुणेद्वारे ही वर्तुळं भेदू शकतो.

and connect with the world through compassion to make this world better.

आणि जगाशी करुणेतून संबंध जोडू शकतो. जग जास्त चांगलं बनवू शकतो.

That same anger could be transformed into it.
