Have you ever wondered what animals think and feel?

There are capacities of the human mind

that we tend to think are capacities only of the human mind.

We can look at evolution, we can look at their brains

The first thing to remember is: our brain is inherited.

Empathy is the mind's ability to match moods with your companions.

The oldest form of empathy is contagious fear.

Empathy is old, but empathy, like everything else in life,

comes on a sliding scale and has its elaboration.

So there's basic empathy: you feel sad, it makes me sad.

and the researchers' home was right there on the shoreline?

이들을 안내했을까요?

And that's happened more than one time.

이런 일은 한번 이상 일어났습니다.

In the Bahamas, there's a woman named Denise Herzing,

바하마에 데니스 헤르징이라는 여성이 있습니다.

and she studies spotted dolphins and they know her.

알락 돌고래를 연구하고, 돌고래들은 그녀를 알아봅니다.

She knows them very well. She knows who they all are.

그녀는 이들을 잘 압니다. 이들이 누군지 알고 있죠.

They know her. They recognize the research boat.

이들도 그녀를 압니다. 그녀의 연구 보트를 알아봅니다.

When she shows up, it's a big happy reunion.

그녀가 나타나면 정말 행복한 재회의 시간이 펼쳐지죠.

Except, one time showed up and they didn't want to come near the boat,

그녀가 나타났는데 이들이 보트 가까이 오려 하지 않았던 한 번만 빼고요.

and that was really strange.

And they couldn't figure out what was going on

다들 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지 몰랐습니다.

until somebody came out on deck

누군가 갑판에 나와서

and announced that one of the people onboard had died

선상의 한 사람이 침상에서 자던 중

during a nap in his bunk.

사망했음을 알리기 전까지는요.

How could dolphins know that one of the human hearts

돌고래들은 어떻게 한 사람의 심장이

방금 멈추었음을 알 수 있었을까요?

had just stopped?

Why would they care?

왜 그것을 신경썼을까요?

And why would it spook them?

그것이 왜 이들을 겁먹게 했을까요?

These mysterious things just hint at all of the things that are going on

이런 신비로운 일들이 지구상에서 우리와 함께 존재하는 마음들에 일어나는

in the minds that are with us on Earth

모든 일들에 대한 실마리를 던져줍니다.

that we almost never think about at all.

우리가 거의 생각하지 않던 일들이죠.

At an aquarium in South Africa

서부 아프리카의 수족관에서

was a little baby bottle-nosed dolphin named Dolly.

돌리라는 이름을 가진 작은 병코고래 새끼가 있었습니다.

She was nursing, and one day a keeper took a cigarette break

젖을 먹고 있었는데, 어느 날은 관리자가 잠시 담배를 피우러 갔습니다.

and he was looking into the window into their pool, smoking.

그리고 담배를 피면서 물속을 들여다보고 있었습니다.

Dolly came over and looked at him,

돌리가 와서 그를 보더니,

went back to her mother, nursed for a minute or two,

어미에게 돌아가서 일이분 쯤 젖을 먹었습니다.

came back to the window

그리고 유리로 돌아와서

and released a cloud of milk that enveloped her head like smoke.

젖을 내뿜어 마치 연기처럼 머리를 뒤덮게 했습니다.

Somehow, this baby bottle-nosed dolphin

어떻게든지, 어린 병코고래가

got the idea of using milk to represent smoke.

연기를 표현하기 위해 젖을 사용할 생각을 해낸 거죠.

When human beings use one thing to represent another,

사람이 무언가를 표현하기 위해 다른 것을 사용할 때,

we call that art.

우리는 그것을 예술이라고 합니다.

The things that make us human

우리를 사람으로 만들어주는 것들은

are not the things that we think make us human.

우리를 사람으로 만들어 준다고 우리 스스로 생각하는 것들이 아닙니다.

What makes us human is that,

우리를 사람으로 만들어주는 것은

of all these things that our minds and their minds have,

그들의 마음과 우리 마음이 가지고 있는 많은 것들 중,

we are the most extreme.

우리가 가장 극단에 있다는 것입니다.

We are the most compassionate,

우리는 가장 동정심이 깊습니다.

most violent, most creative

가장 폭력적이며 가장 창조적입니다.

and most destructive animal that has ever been on this planet,

그리고 우리 행성에 있었던 모든 동물 중 가장 파괴적입니다.

and we are all of those things all jumbled up together.

우리는 이 모든 것들이 뒤섞인 존재들입니다.

But love is not the thing that makes us human.

하지만 사랑은 우리를 사람으로 만들어주는 것이 아닙니다.

It's not special to us.

우리에게만 있는 것이 아닙니다.

We are not the only ones who care about our mates.

우리만 배우자를 배려하는 것이 아닙니다.

We are not the only ones who care about our children.

우리만 아이들을 돌보는 것이 아닙니다.

Albatrosses frequently fly six, sometimes ten thousand miles

알바트로스들은 자주 6천 마일을, 어떤 때는 만 마일을 납니다.

over several weeks to deliver one meal, one big meal,

몇 주에 걸쳐서 하나의 먹이를, 하나의 커다란 먹이를

자신들을 기다리는 새끼 새에게 가져다 주기 위해서죠.

to their chick who is waiting for them.

They nest on the most remote islands in the oceans of the world,

and this is what it looks like.

Passing life from one generation to the next is the chain of being.

한 세대에서 다음 세대로 삶을 전하는 것이 살아있는 것들의 사슬입니다.

If that stops, it all goes away.

그것이 멈춘다면 모든 것이 사라집니다.

If anything is sacred, that is, and into that sacred relationship

성스러운 것이 있다면 그것입니다. 그리고 그러한 성스러운 관계 속에

comes our plastic trash.

우리의 플라스틱 쓰레기가 들어가 있습니다.

All of these birds have plastic in them now.

이 새들 모두의 안에는 이제 플라스틱이 들어있습니다.

This is an albatross six months old, ready to fledge --

died, packed with red cigarette lighters.

죽었습니다. 빨간색 담배 라이터가 든 채였죠.

This is not the relationship we are supposed to have

이것은 우리가 세상과

with the rest of the world.

가졌어야 하는 관계가 아닙니다.

But we, who have named ourselves after our brains,

하지만 우리들, 우리의 뇌를 딴 이름을 스스로에게 붙인 우리는

never think about the consequences.

전혀 결과에 대해 생각하지 않습니다.

When we welcome new human life into the world,

우리가 우리 세상에 새로운 인간을 맞이할 때

we welcome our babies into the company of other creatures.

우리는 아이를 다른 여러 동물과 함께 맞이합니다.

We paint animals on the walls.

우리는 벽에 동물들을 그립니다.

We don't paint cell phones.

휴대전화를 그리지는 않죠.

We don't paint work cubicles.

사무실 칸막이를 그리지 않습니다.

We paint animals to show them that we are not alone.

아이들에게 우리가 혼자가 아님을 보여주려고 동물들을 그립니다.

We have company.

우리에게는 함께하는 존재들이 있습니다.

And every one of those animals in every painting of Noah's ark,

그리고 노아의 방주를 그린 그림에 있는 동물 하나하나는 모두

deemed worthy of salvation is in mortal danger now,

현재의 심각한 위험에서 구원받을 자격이 있습니다.

and their flood is us.

그리고 그들에게 홍수는 바로 우리들입니다.

So we started with a question:

Do they love us?

We're going to ask another question.

Are we capable of using what we have

to care enough to simply let them continue?
