Seventy-thousand years ago, our ancestors were insignificant animals.

How did we turn ourselves from insignificant apes,

Usually, we look for the difference between us and all the other animals

We want to believe -- I want to believe --

that there is something special about me,

about my body, about my brain,

that makes me so superior to a dog or a pig, or a chimpanzee.

But the truth is that, on the individual level,

I'm embarrassingly similar to a chimpanzee.

And if you take me and a chimpanzee and put us together on some lonely island,

and we had to struggle for survival to see who survives better,

I would definitely place my bet on the chimpanzee, not on myself.

And this is not something wrong with me personally.

I guess if they took almost any one of you, and placed you alone

with a chimpanzee on some island,

the chimpanzee would do much better.

The real difference between humans and all other animals

is not on the individual level;

it's on the collective level.

Humans control the planet because they are the only animals

인간은 이 행성을 좌우하죠. 그들만이 유연하고 많은 숫자가 함께

that can cooperate both flexibly and in very large numbers.

협력할 수 있는 동물이기 때문이죠.

Now, there are other animals --

그리고 다른 종류의 동물들이 있죠.

like the social insects, the bees, the ants --

사회적 곤충인 벌과 개미같은 것들이요.

that can cooperate in large numbers, but they don't do so flexibly.

그들은 많은 숫자가 함께 협력할 수 있으나 유연하지 못하죠.

Their cooperation is very rigid.

그들의 협동은 매우 융통성이 없죠.

There is basically just one way in which a beehive can function.

벌집이 돌아가는 방법은 단 한가지 밖에 없죠.

And if there's a new opportunity or a new danger,

혹시 새로운 기회나 위험이 다가와도

the bees cannot reinvent the social system overnight.

벌들은 사회 체계를 빠르게 재건 할 수 없죠.

They cannot, for example, execute the queen

and establish a republic of bees,

or a communist dictatorship of worker bees.

Other animals, like the social mammals --

the wolves, the elephants, the dolphins, the chimpanzees --

they can cooperate much more flexibly,

but they do so only in small numbers,

because cooperation among chimpanzees

is based on intimate knowledge, one of the other.

I'm a chimpanzee and you're a chimpanzee,

and I want to cooperate with you.

What kind of chimpanzee are you?

The only animal that can combine the two abilities together

chimpanzees might be better than us.

But, if you pit 1,000 humans against 1,000 chimpanzees,

the humans will win easily, for the simple reason

that a thousand chimpanzees cannot cooperate at all.

And if you now try to cram 100,000 chimpanzees

into Oxford Street, or into Wembley Stadium,

or Tienanmen Square or the Vatican,

you will get chaos, complete chaos.

Just imagine Wembley Stadium with 100,000 chimpanzees.

Complete madness.

In contrast, humans normally gather there in tens of thousands,

and what we get is not chaos, usually.

What we get is extremely sophisticated and effective networks of cooperation.

All the huge achievements of humankind throughout history,

whether it's building the pyramids or flying to the moon,

have been based not on individual abilities,

Think even about this very talk that I'm giving now:

I'm standing here in front of an audience of about 300 or 400 people,

who might be watching this talk over the Internet,

somewhere in Buenos Aires or in New Delhi.

Nevertheless, even though we don't know each other,

we can work together to create this global exchange of ideas.

This is something chimpanzees cannot do.

They communicate, of course,

but you will never catch a chimpanzee traveling to some distant chimpanzee band

Now cooperation is, of course, not always nice;

all the horrible things humans have been doing throughout history --

and we have been doing some very horrible things --

all those things are also based on large-scale cooperation.

Prisons are a system of cooperation;

slaughterhouses are a system of cooperation;

concentration camps are a system of cooperation.

Chimpanzees don't have slaughterhouses and prisons and concentration camps.

침팬지는 도살장도 감옥도 강제수용소도 가지고 있지않죠.

Now suppose I've managed to convince you perhaps that yes,

아마 여러분도 이제 납득되었을 겁니다.

인간이 세계를 지배할 수 있었던 이유는

we control the world because we can cooperate flexibly in large numbers.

다수가 유연하게 협력 할 수 있기 때문이라는 것을 말입니다.

The next question that immediately arises

탐구적인 사고를 지니신 청중분들이

in the mind of an inquisitive listener is:

즉시 떠올리실 그 다음 질문은

How, exactly, do we do it?

우리가 정확히 어떻게 이것을 해낼까? 일겁니다.

What enables us alone, of all the animals, to cooperate in such a way?

무엇이 모든 동물들 중 우리만이

이런 방법으로 협력할 수 있도록 하는 것일까요?

The answer is our imagination.

그 답은 우리의 상상력입니다.

We can cooperate flexibly with countless numbers of strangers,

우리는 셀 수 없이 많은 낯선이들과

유연하게 협력할 수 있죠.

because we alone, of all the animals on the planet,

이 행성의 모든 동물들 중 우리만이

can create and believe fictions, fictional stories.

소설과 허구적 이야기를 창작하고 믿을 수 있기 때문이죠.

And as long as everybody believes in the same fiction,

모든 사람들이 똑같은 허구적 이야기를 믿는 한

everybody obeys and follows the same rules,

모든 이들이 같은 규율을 지키고 따르죠.

the same norms, the same values.

같은 규범과 가치관들을요.

All other animals use their communication system

다른 모든 동물들은 그들만의 의사소통 체계를

only to describe reality.

그저 현실을 설명하는 데만 사용합니다.

A chimpanzee may say, "Look! There's a lion, let's run away!"

침팬지는 "봐! 저기 사자가있어, 도망가자!" 라고 말할지도 모릅니다.

Or, "Look! There's a banana tree over there! Let's go and get bananas!"

혹은 "봐! 저기 바나나 나무가 있어! 가서 가져오자!"라고요.

Humans, in contrast, use their language not merely to describe reality,

반면, 인간은 단지 현실을 묘사하는 것 뿐 만아니라

새로운 현실과 가상의 현실을 창조하려고 언어를 사용합니다.

but also to create new realities, fictional realities.

A human can say, "Look, there is a god above the clouds!

인간은 이렇게 말할 수 있어요. "봐요, 구름위에 신이 있어요.

And if you don't do what I tell you to do,

내가 하라는 것을 하지 않는다면

when you die, God will punish you and send you to hell."

당신이 죽고난 후, 신이 당신을 처벌하고 지옥으로 보낼 겁니다."

And if you all believe this story that I've invented,

제가 만들어낸 이 이야기를 믿는다면

then you will follow the same norms and laws and values,

and you can cooperate.

This is something only humans can do.

You can never convince a chimpanzee to give you a banana

침팬지가 바나나를 여러분에게 주도록 납득 시킬 수 없습니다.

by promising him, "... after you die, you'll go to chimpanzee heaven ..."

"네가 죽을 때 너는 침팬지 천국으로 갈거야"라고 약속하면서요.

(Laughter)

"... and you'll receive lots and lots of bananas for your good deeds.

"그리고 너의 선행에 덕에 아주 많은 바나나를 받게 될거야.

So now give me this banana."

그러니 내게 그 바나나를 주렴."

No chimpanzee will ever believe such a story.

어떤 침팬지도 이와 같은 이야기를 절대 믿지 않죠.

Only humans believe such stories,

인간만이 이런 이야기를 믿습니다.

which is why we control the world,

그래서 우리가 세상을 지배할 수 있죠.

whereas the chimpanzees are locked up in zoos and research laboratories.

반면 침팬지들은 동물원이나 실험연구소에 갇혀있지만요.

Now you may find it acceptable that yes,

여러분은 아마 종교의 장에서

in the religious field, humans cooperate by believing in the same fictions.

인간이 같은 이야기를 믿음으로써 협력하게 된다는 것을 이해했을 거예요.

Millions of people come together to build a cathedral or a mosque

백만의 사람들이 성당이나 사원의 건설을 위해 함께하고

또는 십자군이나 자하드전쟁에서 싸웠죠.

or fight in a crusade or a jihad, because they all believe in the same stories

그들이 같은 이야기를 믿기 때문이죠.

about God and heaven and hell.

신과 천국 그리고 지옥에 관해서요.

But what I want to emphasize is that exactly the same mechanism

그러나 제가 강조하고 싶은 것은

정확히 똑같은 방법입니다.

underlies all other forms of mass-scale human cooperation,

장대한 인간의 다양한 형태의 협력 아래 놓여있는 것과요.

not only in the religious field.

종교의 장에서 뿐만이 아닙니다.

Take, for example, the legal field.

예로써, 법을 들어 봅시다.

Most legal systems today in the world are based on a belief in human rights.

오늘날 세계의 법 체계는 대부분은

인권에 대한 믿음에 기초를 두고있죠.

But what are human rights?

하지만 인권이란 무엇일까요?

Human rights, just like God and heaven, are just a story that we've invented.

인권은 신과 천국처럼 우리가 지어낸 이야기에 불과하죠.

They are not an objective reality;

그것들은 객관적인 실체가 아니죠.

they are not some biological effect about homo sapiens.

그것들은 호모사피언스에 대한 생물학적 영향같은 것이 아닙니다.

Take a human being, cut him open, look inside,

인간을 예를 들어보죠. 인간을 해부해서 안을 들여다보면

you will find the heart, the kidneys, neurons, hormones, DNA,

심장, 신장, 신경세포,호르몬, DNA 등을 찾을 수 있을 겁니다.

but you won't find any rights.

하지만 어떤 권리도 찾을 수 없죠.

The only place you find rights are in the stories

권리를 찾을 수 있는 유일한 곳은 이야기 속이죠.

that we have invented and spread around over the last few centuries.

지난 몇 세기에 걸쳐 우리가 만들어 퍼뜨린 이야기들이요.

They may be very positive stories, very good stories,

그것들은 매우 긍정적이고 좋은 이야기일 수 있습니다.

but they're still just fictional stories that we've invented.

하지만 여전히 우리가 만들어낸 허구적 이야기에 불과하죠.

The same is true of the political field.

정치분야에서도 같습니다.

The most important factors in modern politics are states and nations.

현대 정치에서 가장 중요한 요소는 주들과 국가들입니다.

But what are states and nations?

They are not an objective reality.

그건 객관적 실체가 아닙니다.

A mountain is an objective reality.

산은 객관적인 실체이죠.

You can see it, you can touch it, you can even smell it.

보고 만지고 이것의 냄새를 맡을 수 있죠.

But a nation or a state,

하지만 한 국가나 한 주는 말이죠.

like Israel or Iran or France or Germany,

이스라엘, 이란, 프랑스 또는 독일 같은 것들은

this is just a story that we've invented

우리가 만들어 내고 굉장한 애정을 갖게된 이야기에 불과하죠.

and became extremely attached to.

The same is true of the economic field.

경제 분야에서도 같습니다.

The most important actors today in the global economy

오늘날 세계 경제에서 가장 중요한 배역은

are companies and corporations.

기업과 법인단체입니다.

Many of you today, perhaps, work for a corporation,

아마 여러분 중 많은 수가 기업에서 일하고 있을 거예요.

like Google or Toyota or McDonald's.

구글이나 도요타 혹은 맥도날드 같은요.

What exactly are these things?

그것들은 정확히 어떤 것들일까요?

They are what lawyers call legal fictions.

변호사들은 법적 의제(합법적인 소설)라고 부르는 것이죠.

They are stories invented and maintained

우리가 변호사라고 부르는 강력한 마법사가

by the powerful wizards we call lawyers.

개발하고 보수한 이야기들입니다.

And what do corporations do all day?

기업들은 하루종일 무엇을 할까요?

Mostly, they try to make money.

Yet, what is money?

Again, money is not an objective reality; it has no objective value.

돈은 객관적인 실체가 아닙니다.

Take this green piece of paper, the dollar bill.

Look at it -- it has no value.

You cannot eat it, you cannot drink it,

먹을 수도 마실 수도, 입을 수도 없어요.

you cannot wear it.

But then came along these master storytellers --

그러나 여기엔 이야기의 달인인 큰 은행들이 따라붙습니다.

the big bankers,

the finance ministers,

자산 전문가들이요. 수상들이요.

the prime ministers --

and they tell us a very convincing story:

그리고 굉장히 확신에 찬 이야기를 하죠.

"Look, you see this green piece of paper?

"보세요. 이 녹색 종이가 보이죠?

It is actually worth 10 bananas."

이건 실제로 10개 바나나의 값어치를 합니다."

And if I believe it, and you believe it,

제가 믿는다면 여러분도 믿을 겁니다. 모두들 믿죠.

and everybody believes it,

it actually works.

이건 실제로 영향을 미칩니다.

I can take this worthless piece of paper,

제가 이 가치없는 종이를 들고

go to the supermarket,

수퍼마켓에 가서 만난적 없는

give it to a complete stranger whom I've never met before,

완전히 낮선 사람에게 이걸 주고

and get, in exchange, real bananas which I can actually eat.

그 대가로, 먹을 수 있는 실제 바나나를 받습니다.

This is something amazing.

멋진 일이죠. 침팬지와는 절대 할 수 없는 일이예요.

You could never do it with chimpanzees.

Chimpanzees trade, of course:

당연히 침팬지도 거래를 합니다:

"Yes, you give me a coconut, I'll give you a banana."

"그래, 코코넛을 주면 나는 바나나를 줄께"

That can work.

일어날 수 있는 일이죠.

But, you give me a worthless piece of paper

하지만 가치없는 종이를 주고

and you except me to give you a banana?

바나나를 줄 것이라고 기대한다면?

No way!

What do you think I am, a human?

Money, in fact, is the most successful story

실제로 돈은 가장 성공적인 사례이죠.

ever invented and told by humans,

인간이 만들고 지어낸것들 중에요.

because it is the only story everybody believes.

이것은 모두가 믿는 이야기이기 때문입니다.

Not everybody believes in God,

모두가 신을 섬기진 않죠.

not everybody believes in human rights,

모두가 인권을 믿진 않습니다.

not everybody believes in nationalism,

모두가 민족주의를 믿진 않아요.

but everybody believes in money, and in the dollar bill.

그러나 모두가 돈과 달러를 신뢰하죠.

Take, even, Osama Bin Laden.

오사마 빈 라덴을 들어봅시다.

He hated American politics and American religion

그는 미국의 정치와 종교를 싫어했죠.

and American culture,

그리고 미국의 문화도요.

but he had no objection to American dollars.

하지만 그는 미국 달러에 대해서는 어떤 이의도 없었죠.

He was quite fond of them, actually.

To conclude, then:

We humans control the world because we live in a dual reality.

All other animals live in an objective reality.

Their reality consists of objective entities,

like rivers and trees and lions and elephants.

We humans, we also live in an objective reality.

우리 인간 또한 객관적 현실에 살고 있습니다.

In our world, too, there are rivers and trees and lions and elephants.

우리의 세계에도 강, 나무, 사자, 코끼리가 있죠.

But over the centuries,

그러나 수 세기에 걸쳐 우리는 이 객관적 현실에 덧씌울

we have constructed on top of this objective reality

a second layer of fictional reality,

허구적 현실을 건설했습니다.

a reality made of fictional entities,

허구적인 실체로 만들어진 현실이요.

like nations, like gods, like money, like corporations.

국가, 신, 돈 그리고 기업체같은것 들을요.

And what is amazing is that as history unfolded,

역사가 밝혀주듯, 놀라운 것은

this fictional reality became more and more powerful

이 허구적 사실들이 더욱 더 강해진다는 겁니다.

so that today, the most powerful forces in the world

그래서 오늘날 세계에서 가장 강한 영향력을 지닌 것은

are these fictional entities.

이런 허구적 실체들입니다.

Today, the very survival of rivers and trees and lions and elephants

오늘날 강,나무, 사자, 코끼리의 생존은

depends on the decisions and wishes of fictional entities,

허구적 실체들의 의도와 결정에 달려있습니다.

like the United States, like Google, like the World Bank --

미국, 구글 그리고 세계은행같은요.

entities that exist only in our own imagination.

오직 우리 상상속에 존재하는 실체들에게요.

Now, we see the creation of a new massive class of useless people.

As computers become better and better in more and more fields,

더 많은 분야에서 컴퓨터가 더욱 더 좋아질 수록

there is a distinct possibility that computers will out-perform us

이것이 인간을 능가할 뚜렷한 가능성있는 겁니다.

in most tasks and will make humans redundant.

대부분의 일에서 인간을 쓸모없는 존재로 만들겁니다.

And then the big political and economic question

21세기의 커다란 정치적 경제적 질문은

of the 21st century will be,

"인간은 뭐에 필요한가?"겠죠.

"What do we need humans for?",

or at least, "What do we need so many humans for?"

또는 "그렇게 많은 인간이 무엇에 필요한가?"일 겁니다.

BG: Do you have an answer in the book?

브루노: 책에 그 해답을 쓰셨나요?

YNH: At present, the best guess we have is to keep them happy

유발: 현재, 우리가 한 최대 추측은 그들을 행복하게 하는거죠.

with drugs and computer games ...

약물과 컴퓨터 게임으로요.

but this doesn't sound like a very appealing future.

하지만 굉장히 매력적인 미래로 보여지진 않죠.

BG: Ok, so you're basically saying in the book and now,

that for all the discussion about the growing evidence

One possibility is this creation of a new massive class of useless people.

Another possibility is the division of humankind

into different biological castes,

with the rich being upgraded into virtual gods,

부유한 자는 가상의 신으로 업그레이드되고

and the poor being degraded to this level of useless people.

가난한 자는 쓸모없는 단계로 하락합니다.
