As a little girl, I always imagined

小さな女の子だった私は いつも心に描いていました

I would one day run away.

いつか逃げ出すだろう と

From the age of six on,

I kept a packed bag with some clothes

and cans of food tucked away

in the back of a closet.

There was a deep restlessness in me,

a primal fear that I would fall prey

to a life of routine and boredom.

And so, many of my early memories involved

intricate daydreams where I would walk across borders,

living unconventional lives on the road.

Years have passed, but many of the adventures

I fantasized about as a child --

traveling and weaving my way

between worlds other than my own —

This is the nomadic dream,

a different kind of American dream

lived by young hobos, travelers,

hitchhikers, vagrants and tramps.

In most of our minds,

the vagabond is a creature from the past.

The word "hobo" conjures up an old

of a weathered old man covered in coal,

but these photographs are in color,

and they portray a community

swirling across the country,

Like their predecessors, today's nomads

travel the steel and asphalt arteries

of the United States.

By day, they hop freight trains, stick out their thumbs,

and ride the highways with anyone

from truckers to soccer moms.

By night, they sleep beneath the stars,

huddled together with their packs of dogs,

cats and pet rats between their bodies.

Some travelers take to the road by choice,

自らの選択で 路上生活を選ぶ人もいます

renouncing materialism, traditional jobs

物質主義や因襲的な仕事

and university degrees in exchange for a glimmer of adventure.

大学の学位と引き換えに おぼろげな冒険を手にします

Others come from the underbelly of society,

また別の人は 社会の底辺から

never given a chance to mobilize upwards:

這い上がるチャンスを 与えられない人達で

foster care dropouts, teenage runaways escaping

養護施設の離脱者 虐待や厳格すぎる家庭から

abuse and unforgiving homes.

Where others see stories of privation

周りの人々にとって

and economic failure,

travelers view their own existence

物語を旅する者は

through the prism of liberation and freedom.

They'd rather live off of the excess

彼らは典型的なアメリカンドリームを得るという

of what they view as a wasteful consumer society

than slave away at an unrealistic chance

at the traditional American dream.

They take advantage of the fact

that in the United States,

up to 40 percent of all food ends up in the garbage

by scavenging for perfectly good produce

in dumpsters and trash cans.

They sacrifice material comforts in exchange

for the space and the time to explore

a creative interior,

to dream, to read, to work on music, art and writing.

But there are many aspects to this life

that are far from idyllic.

No one loses their inner demons

路上に出るだけで 内なる悪を消せる人なんて

by taking to the road.

誰も居ません

Addiction is real, the elements are real,

中毒は現実で 要素は現実で

freight trains maim and kill,

貨物列車は彼らを轢き殺し

and anyone who has lived on the streets can attest

通りで生活する者は誰もが

to the exhaustive list of laws

その存在を犯罪とみなす 容赦ない法律で

that criminalize homeless existence.

取り締まりの対象となり得るのです

Who here knows that in many cities

ここにいる皆さんは アメリカの多くの都市で

across the United States it is now illegal

歩道にしゃがみ込むことや

to sit on the sidewalk,

毛布で体を包むことや

to wrap oneself in a blanket,

自家用車で寝泊まりすることや

to sleep in your own car,

見知らぬ人に食べ物をあげることが

to offer food to a stranger?

今では違法だとは ご存知ないでしょう

I know about these laws because I've watched

私は多くの友人や旅行者達が

as friends and other travelers

これらの犯罪に関わったとして

were hauled off to jail or received citations

刑務所に放り込まれたり 召喚状を受け取ったので

for committing these so-called crimes.

Many of you might be wondering why anyone

皆さんの多くは なぜこんな生活を選ぶのかと

would choose a life like this,

under the thumb of discriminatory laws,

eating out of trash cans,

sleeping under bridges,

picking up seasonal jobs here and there.

The answer to such a question is as varied

そんな問いへの答えは 人々を路上へ向かわせる理由と

as the people that take to the road,

but travelers often respond with a single word:

旅する者たちの答えは しばしば一言に尽きます

freedom.

「自由」

Until we live in a society where every human

私たち全員が ただ生き延びるだけでなく

is assured dignity in their labor

より良く生きるために働く

so that they can work to live well,

そんな人間の尊厳が保障されるような

not only work to survive,

社会に住めるようになるまでは

there will always be an element of those

この開かれた道を 逃げ道として

who seek the open road as a means of escape,

解放の道として それからもちろん--

of liberation and, of course, of rebellion.

反抗の道しるべとして 追い求める者たちが存在するでしょう
