Think of a hard choice you'll face in the near future.

It might be between two careers --

artist and accountant --

or places to live -- the city or the country --

you could marry Betty or you could marry Lolita.

Or it might be a choice about whether to have children,

to have an ailing parent move in with you,

to raise your child in a religion that your partner lives by

パートナーが信仰している宗教に

自分は興味がないけど

子育ては その宗教でやっていくか

but leaves you cold.

一生分の蓄えを 慈善事業に寄付するか やめておくか

Or whether to donate your life savings to charity.

Chances are, the hard choice you thought of was something big,

something momentous, something that matters to you.

Hard choices seem to be occasions

for agonizing, hand-wringing, the gnashing of teeth.

But I think we've misunderstood hard choices

and the role they play in our lives.

Understanding hard choices

難しい選択を理解すれば

私たち一人ひとりが持っている

uncovers a hidden power each of us possesses.

隠れた力が見つかります

What makes a choice hard is the way the alternatives relate.

選択を難しくするのは

他の選択肢との関係性です

In any easy choice,

簡単な選択では

one alternative is better than the other.

ある選択肢が他より良いのですが

In a hard choice,

難しい選択では

one alternative is better in some ways,

ある選択肢は ある面では 他より良いけど

the other alternative is better in other ways,

別の選択肢には別の面で 良いところがあり

and neither is better than the other overall.

総合的には どっちが良いと 言い切れないのです

You agonize over whether to stay in your current job in the city

頭を抱えて 悩みます

今の仕事を続け 都会に残るか

心機一転 田舎へ引越して

or uproot your life for more challenging work in the country,

もっと やりがいのある仕事をするか

ある面では留まる方が良いし

because staying is better in some ways,

moving is better in others,

別の面では動いた方が良いし

and neither is better than the other overall.

総合的には どっちが良いと 言い切れないのです

We shouldn't think that all hard choices are big.

難しい選択は 重大なことだけでは ありませんよ

朝食に何を食べるか 迷っているとしましょう

Let's say you're deciding what to have for breakfast.

You could have high fiber bran cereal

食物繊維たっぷりの シリアルにするか

チョコレート･ドーナツにするか

or a chocolate donut.

仮に 選択のポイントが

Suppose what matters in the choice is tastiness and healthfulness.

美味しいか 体に良いか だとしましょう

The cereal is better for you,

シリアルの方が体に良いですが

the donut tastes way better,

ドーナツの方が ずっと美味しい

でも 総合的には どっちが良いと 言い切れない

but neither is better than the other overall,

a hard choice.

難しい選択です

Realizing that small choices can also be hard,

小さな選択でも

難しくなり得ると知ると

may make big hard choices seem less intractable.

大きくて難しい選択に 立ち向かう気になるかもしれません

After all, we manage to figure out what to have for breakfast,

朝食を何にするか 決められるんですから

so maybe we can figure out whether to stay in the city

都会に残るか

田舎へ引越して

or uproot for the new job in the country.

新しい仕事をするかだって 決められるでしょう

We also shouldn't think that hard choices are hard

また 難しい選択が難しいのは 自分の頭が悪いせいだと

because we are stupid.

思うのは止めましょう

When I graduated from college,

大学を卒業した時 私は

I couldn't decide between two careers, philosophy and law.

哲学か法律の どちらに進むべきか

決められませんでした

哲学が大好きでした

I really loved philosophy.

There are amazing things you can learn as a philosopher,

哲学者になれば

素晴らしいことが学べて

and all from the comfort of an armchair.

肘掛け椅子に座って 快適に仕事ができます

しかし私は 慎ましい移民の家に生まれ

But I came from a modest immigrant family

where my idea of luxury

贅沢といえば

was having a pork tongue and jelly sandwich

お弁当の豚タンと ジャムサンドという

in my school lunchbox,

環境でしたから

so the thought of spending my whole life

一生をかけて

sitting around in armchairs just thinking ...

肘掛け椅子に座って ただ考え事をするだなんて

私にとっては無駄と軽薄の極み という印象でした

Well, that struck me as the height of extravagance and frivolity.

そこで私はノートを取り出し

So I got out my yellow pad,

I drew a line down the middle,

真ん中に線を引き

and I tried my best to think of the reasons

２つの選択肢の やった方がいい理由と

for and against each alternative.

止めた方がいい理由を 考えられる限り 書き出しました

こう思ったのを覚えています

I remember thinking to myself,

if only I knew what my life in each career would be like.

それぞれの道に進んだ場合の

自分の人生が わかったらいいのに

If only God or Netflix would send me a DVD of my two possible future careers,

神様か ネットフリックスが ２つの人生の成り行きを

DVDにして送ってくれたら 決められるのに

I'd be set.

I'd compare them side by side,

２つを並べて比較し

I'd see that one was better,

どっちかの方が良いと

and the choice would be easy.

わかれば選択は簡単になる

But I got no DVD,

でも DVDは届かなかったし

and because I couldn't figure out which was better,

どちらが良いか わからなかったので

I did what many of us do in hard choices:

私は難しい選択に際して 多くの人が するようにしました

I took the safest option.

最も安全な道を選んだのです

Fear of being an unemployed philosopher led me to become a lawyer,

哲学者では就職できない という恐れから

私は弁護士になりました

そして私は気づいたのです

and as I discovered, lawyering didn't quite fit.

弁護士業は合いませんでした

It wasn't who I was.

本当の自分が出せなかったのです

So now I'm a philosopher,

and I study hard choices,

and I can tell you, that fear of the unknown,

while a common motivational default in dealing with hard choices,

rests on a misconception of them.

It's a mistake to think that in hard choices,

one alternative really is better than the other,

but we're too stupid to know which,

頭が悪いから どれだかわからない

and since we don't know which,

どれだか わからないから

we might as well take the least risky option.

一番 リスクの少ないのにしておこう

Even taking two alternatives side by side

２つの選択肢を横に並べて

with full information, a choice can still be hard.

全ての情報を把握していても やっぱり選択は難しいのです

難しい選択は難しいのです

Hard choices are hard not because of us or our ignorance;

私たちが無知だからではなく

they're hard because there is no best option.

最良の選択というものがないから 難しいのです

さて 最良の選択がないなら

Now, if there's no best option,

選択肢を天秤にかけても

if the scales don't tip in favor of one alternative over another,

差がつかないなら

それは どちらも同じくらい 良いということに違いありません

then surely the alternatives must be equally good.

So maybe the right thing to say in hard choices

つまり難しい選択においては

どの選択肢も同じくらい良いと いうのが正しいでしょう

is that they're between equally good options.

But that can't be right.

そんなはず ありません

If alternatives are equally good, you should just flip a coin between them,

どの選択肢も同じくらい良いなら

コインを投げて決めればいいわけです

and it seems a mistake to think,

こんな考えは間違いでしょう

「職業や住む場所 結婚相手に迷ったら

here's how you should decide between careers,

places to live, people to marry:

コインを投げて決めましょう」

Flip a coin.

難しい選択の選択肢が

There's another reason for thinking

that hard choices aren't choices between equally good options.

同じくらい良いわけではないと

考えられる理由は他にもあります

２つの仕事が選べるとしますね

Suppose you have a choice between two jobs:

you could be an investment banker

投資銀行家にもなれるし

or a graphic artist.

グラフィック・アーティストにもなれる

選択に当たり 様々なことが 関係してきます

There are a variety of things that matter in such a choice,

たとえば仕事のワクワク感

like the excitement of the work,

achieving financial security,

経済的な安定

having time to raise a family, and so on.

子育てにかける時間などです

Maybe the artist's career puts you on the cutting edge

アーティストの道に進めば

新しい形の絵の表現の最先端に

of new forms of pictorial expression.

携わることになるでしょう

銀行家の道に進めば

Maybe the banking career puts you on the cutting edge

新しい形の財テクの

of new forms of financial manipulation.

最先端に携わることに なるでしょう

(Laughter)

Imagine the two jobs however you like,

２つの仕事は どっちが良いとも

so that neither is better than the other.

言い切れないと 考えてください

Now suppose we improve one of them, a bit.

では ここで片方の選択肢の条件を 少し良くします

Suppose the bank, wooing you,

仮に銀行が あなたに来てほしくて

月給に500ドル上乗せしたとします

adds 500 dollars a month to your salary.

Does the extra money

お金が増えたことで 銀行の仕事は

now make the banking job better than the artist one?

アーティストより良くなりましたか？

Not necessarily.

そうとは限りません

銀行の仕事としては 給料が上がったことで

A higher salary makes the banking job better than it was before,

上がる前より良くなりましたが

銀行家がアーティストより

but it might not be enough

to make being a banker better than being an artist.

良くなるという程では ないかもしれません

But if an improvement in one of the jobs doesn't make it better than the other,

でも もし一方の条件を良くしても

もう一方より良くならないなら

then the two original jobs could not have been equally good.

もともと２つの仕事は

同じくらいの良さではなかったのです

If you start with two things that are equally good,

良さが同じくらいの仕事が２つあって

片方の条件を良くしたら

and you improve one of them,

it now must be better than the other.

もう片方より良くなるはずです

That's not the case with options in hard choices.

難しい選択の場合 そうは行かないのです

困りましたね

So now we've got a puzzle.

We've got two jobs.

２つの仕事がある

Neither is better than the other, nor are they equally good.

どっちが良いと言い切れない

同じくらい良いわけでもない

So how are we supposed to choose?

では どうやって選べばいいのでしょう？

Something seems to have gone wrong here.

どこかに間違いがあるようです

Maybe the choice itself is problematic, and comparison is impossible.

選択するということ自体に問題があり

比較はできないのでしょうか

でも そんなはず ありません

But that can't be right.

It's not like we're trying to choose between two things that can't be compared.

比較できない２つの中から

選ぼうとしているわけでは ありません

２つの仕事の長所を 天秤にかけているのであって

We're weighing the merits of two jobs, after all,

数字の９と 目玉焼きの

not the merits of the number nine and a plate of fried eggs.

長所を比べているのとは違います

２つの仕事の総合的な価値を 比較することは

A comparison of the overall merits of two jobs

is something we can make,

私たちには可能で

and one we often do make.

実際 よくやることです

I think the puzzle arises

私が思うに 困惑のもとは

because of an unreflective assumption we make about value.

価値に関して 私たちが

軽はずみに持ってしまう 思い込みにあります

We unwittingly assume that values like justice, beauty, kindness,

正義や美しさ 優しさなどの価値を

私たちは うっかり

長さや質量 重さといった

are akin to scientific quantities, like length, mass and weight.

Take any comparative question not involving value,

価値と関係のない比較を 考えてみましょう

such as which of two suitcases is heavier.

There are only three possibilities.

可能性は３つだけです

The weight of one is greater, lesser or equal to the weight of the other.

一方が重いか 軽いか

どちらも同じ重さかです

Properties like weight can be represented by real numbers --

重さのような性質のものは

１、２、３といった 実数で表すことができ

one, two, three and so on --

and there are only three possible comparisons

２つの実数を比較した場合

between any two real numbers.

可能性は３つだけです

One number is greater, lesser, or equal to the other.

一方の数字が大きいか 小さいか

もう一方と同じかです

Not so with values.

価値の場合は違います

ポスト啓蒙時代に生まれた 私たちは

As post-Enlightenment creatures,

we tend to assume

この世界の大事なことの鍵は

that scientific thinking holds the key to everything of importance in our world,

すべて科学的思考が握っていると

思いがちですが

価値の世界は

but the world of value is different from the world of science.

科学の世界とは違うのです

The stuff of the one world can be quantified by real numbers.

一方の世界の物事は

実数で測ることができますが

もう一方の世界の物事は そうはいかないのです

The stuff of the other world can't.

We shouldn't assume that the world of is, of lengths and weights,

現実や長さや重さの世界と

道徳的な義務や理想の世界が

同じ構造に なっていると

has the same structure as the world of ought,

of what we should do.

思い込んでは いけません

So if what matters to us --

私たちにとって大切な

子どもの喜びや パートナーに対する愛情が

a child's delight, the love you have for your partner —

can't be represented by real numbers,

実数で表せないのなら

選択において可能性が

then there's no reason to believe

that in choice, there are only three possibilities --

３つしかないなんてことには なりません

ある選択肢が他より良いか悪いか

that one alternative is better, worse or equal to the other.

他と同じか だけではないのです

We need to introduce a new, fourth relation

私たちには「良い 悪い 同じ」を越えて

beyond being better, worse or equal,

難しい選択で何が起きているか 説明するための

第４の関係性が必要です

that describes what's going on in hard choices.

I like to say that the alternatives are "on a par."

私が好んで使っているのは

「互角」です

When alternatives are on a par,

選択肢が互角であれば

どちらを選ぶかが 大事になってきますが

it may matter very much which you choose,

一方が もう一方より 良いというわけではないのです

but one alternative isn't better than the other.

Rather, the alternatives are in the same neighborhood of value,

むしろ 選択肢は どれも

同じ価値の領域にあり

in the same league of value,

同じ価値のレベルにあるのです

while at the same time being very different in kind of value.

ただ価値の内容が

大きく異なっています

だからこそ その選択は難しいのです

That's why the choice is hard.

Understanding hard choices in this way

難しい選択を このように理解すると

自分でも知らなかった 自分についての発見をします

uncovers something about ourselves we didn't know.

私たちは それぞれ皆

Each of us has the power to create reasons.

理由を生み出す力を持っている ということです

簡単な選択にしか直面しない という世界を

Imagine a world in which every choice you face

想像してみてください

is an easy choice,

that is, there's always a best alternative.

常に最良の選択肢がある世界です

If there's a best alternative, then that's the one you should choose,

最良の選択肢があれば

それを選ぶべきでしょう

because part of being rational

合理的でいるためには

is doing the better thing rather than the worse thing,

悪いことより良いことをするべきですし

選ぶ理由が最も多い選択肢を 選ぶべきですからね

choosing what you have most reason to choose.

In such a world,

そのような世界では

we'd have most reason

理由の多いものが選ばれますから

to wear black socks instead of pink socks,

私たちが履く靴下はピンクより黒

食べるのはドーナツよりシリアル

to eat cereal instead of donuts,

住むのは田舎より都会

to live in the city rather than the country,

結婚相手は ロリータじゃなくベティです

to marry Betty instead of Lolita.

簡単な選択しかない世界では

A world full of only easy choices would enslave us to reasons.

私たちは理由の奴隷に なってしまうのです

When you think about it,

考えてみれば

it's nuts to believe that the reasons given to you

誰かに与えられた理由に基づいて

一番 理由が多かったから

自分は この趣味に はまり

dictated that you had most reason to pursue

この家に住み

the exact hobbies you do,

to live in the exact house you do,

この仕事をしているんだと

信じるなんて どうかしてます

to work at the exact job you do.

Instead, you faced alternatives that were on a par --

そうではなく 互角の選択肢を前に

難しい選択をして

hard choices --

and you made reasons for yourself

その趣味 その家 その仕事を

自分で選ぶための理由を 自分で作ったのです

to choose that hobby, that house and that job.

選択肢が互角の場合

When alternatives are on a par,

the reasons given to us,

与えられた理由 つまり―

the ones that determine whether we're making a mistake,

どの選択肢が間違っているかを 判定するための理由は

are silent as to what to do.

選択の参考にはなりません

It's here, in the space of hard choices,

この 難しい選択の局面こそ

that we get to exercise our normative power --

私たちの持つ 規準を定める力が

発揮される場所なのです

the power to create reasons for yourself,

その力によって

to make yourself into the kind of person

自分で理由を作り出し

都会の生活より

for whom country living is preferable to the urban life.

田舎暮らしを選ぶに値する人間に

自分を変えていくのです

互角の選択肢の中から

When we choose between options that are on a par,

選択をする時

we can do something really rather remarkable.

私たちには かなり画期的なことができます

We can put our very selves behind an option.

自分というものを 選択の理由にできるのです

ここが私の居場所です

Here's where I stand.

Here's who I am, I am for banking.

これが私という人間です 銀行家を目指しています

I am for chocolate donuts.

チョコレート・ドーナツを選びます

(Laughter)

難しい選択における こうした反応は

This response in hard choices is a rational response,

合理的な反応ですが

but it's not dictated by reasons given to us.

与えられた理由に 決められたのではありません

Rather, it's supported by reasons created by us.

自分で作り出した理由に 裏打ちされた反応なのです

When we create reasons for ourselves

自分は あのタイプではなくて

to become this kind of person rather than that,

このタイプの人間になると決め その理由を自分で作ると

we wholeheartedly become the people that we are.

私たちは真の意味で 本来の自分になるのです

You might say that we become the authors of our own lives.

自分の人生の作者になると

言っても良いかもしれません

だから難しい選択に直面したら

So when we face hard choices, we shouldn't beat our head against a wall

どっちの選択肢の方が良いかなんて

trying to figure out which alternative is better.

無駄なことを考えてはいけません

最良の選択肢など ないのです

There is no best alternative.

Instead of looking for reasons out there,

外にある理由を探すのではなく

自分の内にある理由を探すのです

we should be looking for reasons in here:

Who am I to be?

自分は どんな人間になるのだろう？

You might decide to be a pink sock-wearing,

あなたはピンクの靴下を履き

cereal-loving, country-living banker,

シリアルが大好きな 田舎の銀行家になると決め

私は黒い靴下を履いて 都会に暮らす―

and I might decide to be a black sock-wearing,

urban, donut-loving artist.

ドーナツ好きの芸術家になると 決めるという具合です

What we do in hard choices is very much up to each of us.

難しい選択を迫られた時 どうするかは

私たち次第なのです

Now, people who don't exercise their normative powers in hard choices

さて 難しい選択を迫られても 規準を定める力を発揮しない人は

are drifters.

漂流者です

We all know people like that.

思い当たる人がいますよね

I drifted into being a lawyer.

私は流されて弁護士になりました

I didn't put my agency behind lawyering.

自分の主体性を差し置いて

I wasn't for lawyering.

目指してもいなかった弁護士業に 進んだのです

Drifters allow the world to write the story of their lives.

漂流者は自分の人生のストーリーを

世間に委ねます

They let mechanisms of reward and punishment --

褒められるとか 怖いとか ラクな道を選ぼうとか

pats on the head, fear, the easiness of an option --

賞罰の仕組みに 自分の進路を

任せてしまうのです

to determine what they do.

So the lesson of hard choices:

難しい選択を経験して学んだことは

reflect on what you can put your agency behind,

自分が どこに主体性を置くか

on what you can be for,

自分が何を目指すのかに表れます

難しい選択を経験することによって

and through hard choices,

become that person.

なりたい自分になるのです

難しい選択は 決して 苦悩や不安の元などではなく

Far from being sources of agony and dread,

人間が生きる上での

hard choices are precious opportunities

for us to celebrate what is special about the human condition,

特別なことを 称え喜ぶ

貴重な機会なのです

that the reasons that govern our choices as correct or incorrect

正解か不正解かという理由だけで

私たちの選択を支配するのには

sometimes run out,

限界があります

and it is here, in the space of hard choices,

難しい選択の局面でこそ

that we have the power to create reasons for ourselves

私たちが本来持っている

個性を生かした人物になるための

to become the distinctive people that we are.

理由を主体的に 作り出すことができます

And that's why hard choices are not a curse

だから 難しい選択は不幸ではなく

ありがたい幸運なのです

but a godsend.
