Think of a hard choice you'll face in the near future.

It might be between two careers --

Or it might be a choice about whether to have children,

Hard choices seem to be occasions

জটিল সিদ্ধান্ত নেয়া অনেক সময় ভীষণ কষ্টদায়ক,

for agonizing, hand-wringing, the gnashing of teeth.

যেমন দাঁত দিয়ে কামড় লেগে ক্ষতের সৃষ্টি হয়।

But I think we've misunderstood hard choices

এগুলো যে ভূমিকা পালন করে আমাদের জীবনে

and the role they play in our lives.

Understanding hard choices

জটিল সিদ্ধান্তকে সঠিকভাবে বুঝতে পারলে

তা আমাদের অভ্যন্তরীণ

uncovers a hidden power each of us possesses.

লুকানো শক্তি উন্মোচন করে।

What makes a choice hard is the way the alternatives relate.

একটি সিদ্ধান্ত তখনই কঠিন হয়ে উঠে যখন তার সাথে

In any easy choice,

one alternative is better than the other.

In a hard choice,

one alternative is better in some ways,

the other alternative is better in other ways,

and neither is better than the other overall.

সবমিলিয়ে দু'টি বিকল্পের কোনটিই কোনটির চেয়ে ভালো নাও হতে পারে ।

You agonize over whether to stay in your current job in the city

তুমি ভাবতে থাকো কোন চাকুরীতে থাকা ঠিক হবে

শহরের বর্তমান চাকুরিতে

নাকি জীবনকে চেনা পরিবেশ থেকে সরিয়ে

or uproot your life for more challenging work in the country,

because staying is better in some ways,

moving is better in others,

We shouldn't think that all hard choices are big.

Let's say you're deciding what to have for breakfast.

but neither is better than the other overall,

a hard choice.

Realizing that small choices can also be hard,

When I graduated from college,

I couldn't decide between two careers, philosophy and law.

There are amazing things you can learn as a philosopher,

But that can't be right.

There are a variety of things that matter in such a choice,

like the excitement of the work,

achieving financial security,

having time to raise a family, and so on.

Maybe the artist's career puts you on the cutting edge

of new forms of pictorial expression.

Imagine the two jobs however you like,

so that neither is better than the other.

Now suppose we improve one of them, a bit.

Suppose the bank, wooing you,

Does the extra money

Not necessarily.

We've got two jobs.

So how are we supposed to choose?

Something seems to have gone wrong here.

Maybe the choice itself is problematic, and comparison is impossible.

But that can't be right.

It's not like we're trying to choose between two things that can't be compared.

There are only three possibilities.

The weight of one is greater, lesser or equal to the weight of the other.

Properties like weight can be represented by real numbers --

ওজনের মত এ ধরণের গূনগুলোকে বাস্তব সংখ্যা

one, two, three and so on --

and there are only three possible comparisons

Understanding hard choices in this way

uncovers something about ourselves we didn't know.

Each of us has the power to create reasons.

Imagine a world in which every choice you face

that is, there's always a best alternative.

If there's a best alternative, then that's the one you should choose,

to work at the exact job you do.

Instead, you faced alternatives that were on a par --

কিন্তু তুমি যখন এমন কোন বিকল্পের মুখোমুখি হবে

যা কিনা সমান সমান -কঠিন সিদ্ধান্তগুলো-

hard choices --

and you made reasons for yourself

আর তুমি যুক্তি খুঁজে বের করবে কোনটি

তুমি বেছে নিবে- কোন একটি শখ, বাড়ি বা চাকুরী।

to choose that hobby, that house and that job.

যখন বিকল্পগুলো সমান সমান থাকে,

When alternatives are on a par,

the reasons given to us,

আমরা কি করব তা ঠিক করতে পারি না।

the ones that determine whether we're making a mistake,

আমাদের যুক্তিগুলো নির্ধারণ করে

are silent as to what to do.

আমরা যে সিদ্ধান্ত নিচ্ছি তা ভুল হল কিনা।

It's here, in the space of hard choices,

that we get to exercise our normative power --

When we choose between options that are on a par,

we can do something really rather remarkable.

We can put our very selves behind an option.

জটিল সিদ্ধান্তের ক্ষেত্রে এই উত্তরগুলো

This response in hard choices is a rational response,

হয়ে যায় বৌদ্ধিক বা যৌক্তিক উত্তর,

but it's not dictated by reasons given to us.

কিন্তু এটা এমন হওয়া ঠিক নয় যে যুক্তি আমাদের আদেশ করবে।

Rather, it's supported by reasons created by us.

বরং এটা আমাদের তৈরি যুক্তিগুলোর সাহায্যে আমাদের জন্য যথাযথ হবে।

When we create reasons for ourselves

যখন আমরা আমাদের জন্য যুক্তি বের করি

to become this kind of person rather than that,

কোন এক ধরণের ব্যাক্তি হওয়ার জন্য,

we wholeheartedly become the people that we are.

আমরা সেই ব্যক্তিটি হওয়ার জন্য হৃদয় থেকে চেষ্টা করি।

You might say that we become the authors of our own lives.

তুমি বলতে পার এভাবে আমরা নিজেদের

So when we face hard choices, we shouldn't beat our head against a wall

কোন বিকল্পটি বেশী ভাল তা ভেবে

trying to figure out which alternative is better.

দেয়ালে মাথা ঠোকা উচিৎ নয়।

আসলে সবচেয়ে ভাল বলে কোন বিকল্প নেই ।

There is no best alternative.

Instead of looking for reasons out there,

আমাদের এখানে নিজেদের ভিতর যুক্তি খোঁজা উচিৎ,

বাহির পর্যবেক্ষণ করে যুক্তি বের করার চেয়ে।

we should be looking for reasons in here:

Who am I to be?

আমি কি হতে চাই?

You might decide to be a pink sock-wearing,

তুমি সিদ্ধান্ত নিতে পার তুমি কি গোলাপী মোজা পরবে,

cereal-loving, country-living banker,

সিরিয়াল খাবে কি , শহর থেকে দূরে বাস করা ব্যাংকার হবে কি,

আর আমি ভাবতে পারি কালো মোজা পরা, শহুরে

and I might decide to be a black sock-wearing,

urban, donut-loving artist.

ডোনাট খেতে পছন্দ করে সেই ব্যাক্তিটি হতে পারি কি।

What we do in hard choices is very much up to each of us.

জটিল সিদ্ধান্ত নেয়ার ক্ষেত্রে আমরা

কি সিদ্ধান্ত নিচ্ছি তা ব্যক্তি ভেদে ভিন্ন হবে।

Now, people who don't exercise their normative powers in hard choices

এখন, যারা এক্ষেত্রে মূল্যবোধের ক্ষমতার চর্চা করে না

are drifters.

তারা যাযাবর ধরণের।

We all know people like that.

I drifted into being a lawyer.

So the lesson of hard choices:

তাই জটিল সিদ্ধান্তের ক্ষেত্রে যা করতে হয়ঃ

reflect on what you can put your agency behind,

গভীরভাবে ভাব যেখানে তুমি তোমার ক্ষমতা প্রয়োগ করতে পারবে,

on what you can be for,

যা তুমি হতে পারবে,

আর জটিল সিদ্ধান্তের ভিতর দিয়ে,

and through hard choices,

become that person.

তুমি সেই ব্যাক্তিটিই হয়ে যাও।

মানসিক কষ্ট আর ভয়ে না থেকে,

Far from being sources of agony and dread,

জটিল সিদ্ধান্তগুলো আসলে আমাদেরকে

hard choices are precious opportunities

for us to celebrate what is special about the human condition,

মানুষের এক অবস্থার বিশেষত্ত্ব

উদযাপনের অমূল্য সুযোগ এনে দেয়,

that the reasons that govern our choices as correct or incorrect

তা হল, যে যুক্তিগুলো আমাদের পছন্দকে নিয়ন্ত্রণ করে,

sometimes run out,

and it is here, in the space of hard choices,
