You may have heard about the Koran's idea of paradise

being 72 virgins,

72 हूरियाँ हैं.

But in fact, here in the Northwest, we're living very close

to the real Koranic idea of paradise,

defined 36 times as "gardens watered by running streams."

Since I live on a houseboat on the running stream of Lake Union,

this makes perfect sense to me.

But the thing is, how come it's news to most people?

I know many well-intentioned non-Muslims

who've begun reading the Koran, but given up,

disconcerted by its "otherness."

yet even he called the Koran

Part of the problem, I think, is that we imagine

that the Koran can be read as we usually read a book --

as though we can curl up with it on a rainy afternoon

with a bowl of popcorn within reach,

as though God --

and the Koran is entirely in the voice of God speaking to Muhammad --

were just another author on the best-seller list.

Yet, the fact that so few people do actually read the Koran

मगर इतने कम लोगों का

is precisely why it's so easy to quote -- that is, to misquote.

in what I call the "highlighter version,"

My Arabic is reduced by now to wielding a dictionary,

so I took four well-known translations

and decided to read them side by side, verse by verse,

Now, I did have an advantage.

My last book was about the story behind the Shi'a-Sunni split,

So I read slowly.

and that, I think, is what is meant by "hubris" --

I did resist the temptation to skip to the back,

where the shorter and more clearly mystical chapters are.

it would slip away overnight,

and I'd come back in the morning,

wondering if I wasn't lost in a strange land.

And yet, the terrain was very familiar.

The Koran declares that it comes to renew the message

क़ुरान कहता है कि वो

टोरा (मुसा कि पाँच क़िताबें) और गॉस्पेल (धर्मनिर्देश) में दिए संदेशों को ही दोहराता है.

of the Torah and the Gospels.

So one-third of it reprises the stories of Biblical figures

तो उसका एक-तिहाई

बाईबल के पात्रों की कहानियों को ही पुनः बयान करता है

like Abraham, Moses, Joseph, Mary, Jesus.

जैसे कि अब्राहम, मुसा,

जोसेफ, मेरी, इसा.

God himself was utterly familiar

from his earlier manifestation as Yahweh,

jealously insisting on no other gods.

The presence of camels, mountains, desert wells and springs

took me back to the year I spent wandering the Sinai Desert.

And then there was the language, the rhythmic cadence of it,

And I began to grasp why it's said

कि क्यों ये कहा जाता है कि

that the Koran is really the Koran only in Arabic.

क़ुरान को क़ुरान की तरह जानने का ज़रीया

सिर्फ अरबी है.

Take the Fatihah, the seven-verse opening chapter

मसलन फातिहाह को लीजिए,

सात आयतों का पहला अध्याय

that is the Lord's Prayer and the Shema Yisrael of Islam combined.

जो ईश्वर की प्रार्थना के साथ साथ इस्लाम की प्रमुख प्रार्थना भी है.

It's just 29 words in Arabic,

अरबी में ये सिर्फ 29 शब्दों में है,

पर अनुवादों में 65 से 72 तक.

but anywhere from 65 to 72 in translation.

और जितना आप इसमें शब्द जोड़ते जाते हैं,

And yet the more you add, the more seems to go missing.

उतना ही लगता है कि कुछ छूट गया.

अरबी उच्चारणों में

The Arabic has an incantatory, almost hypnotic quality

मंत्रमुग्ध कर देने की क्षमता है

that begs to be heard rather than read,

इसलिए इसका प्रभाव पढ़ने से सुनने में ज़्यादा आता है,

इसे समझने से ज़्यादा महसूस करने की ज़रूरत है.

felt more than analyzed.

It wants to be chanted out loud,

इसे सस्वर उच्चारित करना होगा,

to sound its music in the ear and on the tongue.

ताकि इसका संगीत कानों और ज़बान को छूँ सके.

तो क़ुरान अंग्रेज़ी में

So the Koran in English is a kind of shadow of itself,

अपनी छाया मात्र है,

or as Arthur Arberry called his version,

या जैसा ऑर्थर आरबेरी ने अपने अनुवाद के बारे में कहा,

"an interpretation."

'एक व्याख्या'.

But all is not lost in translation.

पर अनुवाद में सब कुछ खो गया ऎसा भी नहीं है.

जैसा कि क़ुरान वादा करता है, सब्र का फल मिलता है,

As the Koran promises, patience is rewarded,

and there are many surprises --

और कुछ ताज्जुब करने वाली बातें भी हैं --

a degree of environmental awareness, for instance,

जैसे थोड़ी बहुत पर्यावरण सचेतनता

and of humans as mere stewards of God's creation,

और मनुष्य का ईश्वर की सृष्टि में निमित्त मात्र होने क एहसास,

unmatched in the Bible.

And where the Bible is addressed exclusively to men,

और जहाँ बाईबल केवल पुरूषों को ही सम्भाषित करता है,

using the second- and third-person masculine,

पुल्लिंग द्वितीय पुरूष और तृ्तीय पुरूष के वाचन में,

वहीं क़ुरान महिलाओं को भी शामिल करता है --

the Koran includes women --

talking, for instance,

जैसे क़ुरान बात करता है

of believing men and believing women,

पुरूषों पर विश्वास और स्त्रियों पर विश्वास करने पर --

honorable men and honorable women.

सम्माननीय पुरुष और सम्माननीय महिलाएँ.

Or take the infamous verse about killing the unbelievers.

या फिर आप उस कुख्यात आयत को ही लीजिए

जिसमें क़ाफिरों को मारने की बात कही गई है.

हाँ, इसमें ज़रूर ऎसा कहा गया है,

Yes, it does say that,

but in a very specific context:

लेकिन बहुत ही विशेष संदर्भ में:

the anticipated conquest of the sanctuary city of Mecca,

पवित्र शहर मक़्का पर

चढ़ाई से पहले,

where fighting was usually forbidden.

जहाँ सामान्यतः युद्ध की मनाही थी.

And the permission comes hedged about with qualifiers.

पर ये अनुमति भी बहुत सारी शर्तों और हिदायतों के साथ दी गई.

Not "You must kill unbelievers in Mecca,"

आप क़ाफ़िरों को मक़्का में नहीं मार सकते,

but you can, you are allowed to,

मगर इजाज़त मिले तो ऎसा कर सकते हैं,

but only after a grace period is over,

पर सिर्फ तब जब रियायत का वक़्त ख़त्म हो गया हो

and only if there's no other pact in place,

और तब तक कोई दूसरा समझौता भी ना हो पाया हो

and only if they try to stop you getting to the Kaaba,

और वो भी तब जब वो आपको क़ाबा जाने से रोकें,

and only if they attack you first.

और उसमें भी तब जब पहले हमला वो करें.

And even then -- God is merciful;

इस पर भी -- ईश्वर दयानिधान है,

माफ कर देना सबसे बड़ी महानता है --

forgiveness is supreme --

and so, essentially,

और इसलिए, अनिवार्य रूप से,

better if you don't.

बेहतर यही है कि आप ना मारें.

This was perhaps the biggest surprise --

सबसे बड़ा आश्चर्य शायद यही था --

how flexible the Koran is,

कि क़ुरान कितना उदार है,

at least in minds that are not fundamentally inflexible.

कम से कम उनके लिए जो

मूलतः रूढ़ीवादी नहीं हैं.

"Some of these verses are definite in meaning," it says,

'इनमें से कुछ आयतों के अर्थ स्पष्ट हैं', ये कहता है,

"and others are ambiguous."

The perverse at heart will seek out the ambiguities,

trying to create discord by pinning down meanings of their own.

Only God knows the true meaning.

The phrase "God is subtle" appears again and again,

ये जुमला, ' ईश्वर सूक्ष्म है '

and indeed, the whole of the Koran is far more subtle

और सचमुच में, समूचा क़ुरान हमें जितना बताया जाता है,

than most of us have been led to believe.

As in, for instance, that little matter of virgins and paradise.

वो छोटा सा मुद्दा

Old-fashioned orientalism comes into play here.

The word used four times is "houris,"

जिस शब्द को चार बार दोहराया गया है

वो है 'हूरी',

जिनका वर्णन

rendered as dark-eyed maidens with swelling breasts,

काली आँखों वाली भारी वक्ष की कन्याओं के रूप में

or as fair, high-bosomed virgins.

या फिर सुंदर, भारी नितंब वाली कुमारियों के रूप में किया गया है.

लेकिन मूल अरबी में

Yet all there is in the original Arabic is that one word: houris.

केवल एक शब्द है: ' हूरी.'

Not a swelling breast or high bosom in sight.

कोई भारी वक्ष या नितंब नहीं.

Now this may be a way of saying "pure beings," like in angels,

अब ये पवित्र जीवात्माओं के वर्णन का तरीक़ा हो सकता है

जैसे कि देवदूत

या फिर युनानी कौरो (पुल्लिंग) या कोरे (स्त्रिलिंग) जैसे,

or it may be like the Greek "kouros" or "kore,"

चिरयुवा.

an eternal youth.

But the truth is, nobody really knows.

पर सच्चाई ये है कि सच क्या है कोई नहीं जानता

And that's the point.

और यही ध्यान में रखने वाली बात है.

Because the Koran is quite clear

क्योंकि क़ुरान बहुत स्पष्ट है

when it says that you'll be "a new creation in paradise,"

जब वो आपसे कहता है कि आप

'स्वर्ग में एक नई सृ्ष्टि बनेंगे'

and that you will be "recreated in a form unknown to you,"

और आपका ' आपकी कल्पना के परे

किसी रूप में पुनर्सृ्जन होगा',

which seems to me a far more appealing prospect

जो मेरे लिए कहीं ज़्यादा आकर्षणीय है

than a virgin.

किसी हूरी को पाने की तुलना में.

And that number 72 never appears.

और वो 72 का आंकड़ा कहीं नहीं आता.

There are no 72 virgins in the Koran.

क़ुरान में कहीं भी 72 हूरियों

का उल्लेख नहीं है.

That idea only came into being 300 years later,

ये कल्पना 300 साल बाद की है,

and most Islamic scholars see it as the equivalent

जिसे ज़्यादातर ईस्लामी बोद्धा

of people with wings sitting on clouds and strumming harps.

बादलों पर बैठे पंखों वाले

हार्प बजाते लोगों जैसी कल्पना ही समझते हैं.

Paradise is quite the opposite.

(क़ुरान में) स्वर्ग इसके बिलकुल विपरीत है.

वो कौमार्य नहीं,

It's not virginity;

it's fecundity;

उर्वरता है,

it's plenty.

वो प्राचूर्य है,

उसमें बहती धाराओं से सिंचित

It's gardens watered by running streams.

बगीचे हैं.
