But in fact, here in the Northwest, we're living very close

to the real Koranic idea of paradise,

defined 36 times as "gardens watered by running streams."

꾸란은 천국에 대해

"강이 흐르는 정원" 이라고 36번 정의하고 있죠.

Since I live on a houseboat on the running stream of Lake Union,

this makes perfect sense to me.

But the thing is, how come it's news to most people?

그런데 문제는, 왜 대부분의 사람에겐 이게 놀라운 것일까요?

I know many well-intentioned non-Muslims

저는 꾸란을 읽기 시작했다가 결국 포기해버린

who've begun reading the Koran, but given up,

많은 선의의 비(非)무슬림들을 알고 있는데요.

disconcerted by its "otherness."

꾸란의 특이함에 당황해버린 것이죠.

역사가 토마스 칼라일은

The historian Thomas Carlyle considered Muhammad

무함마드를 세계의 위대한 영웅 중 한 명이라 생각했습니다.

one of the world's greatest heroes,

yet even he called the Koran

심지어 칼라일은 꾸란을 이렇게 기술했습니다.

"꾸란은 지금까지 읽어왔던 책 중에 가장 고되고,

"as toilsome reading as I ever undertook; a wearisome, confused jumble."

Part of the problem, I think, is that we imagine

사람들이 꾸란을 보통의 책을 읽듯이

that the Koran can be read as we usually read a book --

as though we can curl up with it on a rainy afternoon

마치 비오는 날 오후에 그냥 슬슬 읽어내려가는 책 처럼 말이죠.

with a bowl of popcorn within reach,

as though God --

마치 알라가- -

and the Koran is entirely in the voice of God speaking to Muhammad --

--꾸란은 전적으로 무함마드에게 계시하는 알라의 목소리로 기술되어 있는데요--

마치 알라가 베스트셀러 목록의 한 명의 저자라고 생각하면서 말이죠.

were just another author on the best-seller list.

Yet, the fact that so few people do actually read the Koran

하지만 꾸란을 정말로 제대로 읽는

사람이 거의 없다는 사실은

사람들이 꾸란을 쉽게 인용하는,

is precisely why it's so easy to quote -- that is, to misquote.

즉, 잘못 인용하는 이유가 되기도 합니다.

Phrases and snippets taken out of context

in what I call the "highlighter version,"

전 이걸 하이라이터 버전이라고 부르는데,

which is the one favored by both Muslim fundamentalists

무슬림 근본주의자들과 이슬람 문화를 싫어하는

and anti-Muslim Islamophobes.

반(反)무슬림 주의자들이 모두 좋아합니다.

So this past spring,

준비를 하기 시작했습니다.

as I was gearing up to begin writing a biography of Muhammad,

I realized I needed to read the Koran properly --

그 때 꾸란을 정말 제대로 읽어봐야겠다고 생각하게 됐어요.

as properly as I could, that is.

제 아랍어 수준은

My Arabic is reduced by now to wielding a dictionary,

사전을 볼 줄 아는 수준이라서,

so I took four well-known translations

잘 알려진 네 개의 번역본을 나란히 갖다 놓고

and decided to read them side by side, verse by verse,

하나 하나, 구절 구절 비교해 가며

읽기로 하였죠.

along with a transliteration and the original seventh-century Arabic.

음역(音譯)과

7세기에 사용된 원래 아랍어를 따라서 말이죠.

사실 유리한 점이 있기도 했죠.

Now, I did have an advantage.

My last book was about the story behind the Shi'a-Sunni split,

제 마지막 책이

시아파와 수니파가 왜 갈라졌는가에 대한 뒷 얘기였는데,

and for that, I'd worked closely with the earliest Islamic histories,

그런 이유로 책을 쓰면서 초기 이슬람 역사에 친숙해질 수가 있었습니다.

so I knew the events to which the Koran constantly refers,

its frame of reference.

I knew enough, that is, to know that I'd be a tourist in the Koran --

저는 잘 알고 있었어요,

제가 꾸란을 방문하는 여행객 정도쯤 된다는 걸요.

an informed one,

지식도 좀 있고,

an experienced one, even,

경험도 좀 있는 관광객이지만,

but still an outsider,

하지만 여전히 외부인이에요.

an agnostic Jew reading someone else's holy book.

이건 마치 불가지론(不可知論)자인 유대인이

성경을 읽는 것과 비슷하죠.

(Laughter)

So I read slowly.

그래서 천천히 읽었어요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

I'd set aside three weeks for this project,

이 프로젝트를 위해 3주 정도 생각했었는데

and that, I think, is what is meant by "hubris" --

오만한 생각이었죠.

(웃음)

(Laughter)

왜냐하면 결국에는 석 달이 걸렸거든요.

because it turned out to be three months.

(Laughter)

I did resist the temptation to skip to the back,

좀 더 짧으면서도 확연하게 영적인 내용이 담긴

뒷 쪽 수라로 건너 뛰려는 유혹을 참았죠. (역주: 수라는 꾸란의 각 장)

where the shorter and more clearly mystical chapters are.

그런데 매번 제가 이제 꾸란이 좀 이해가 간다..

But every time I thought I was beginning to get a handle on the Koran --

라는 생각을 갖기 시작하면,

that feeling of "I get it now" --

그러니까 "이제 알겠다" 라는 느낌을 가지면,

그 느낌은 하룻밤 사이에 사라지더라고요.

it would slip away overnight,

그리고, 내가 이상한 세상에서 헤매진 않았는지 궁금해하며

and I'd come back in the morning,

wondering if I wasn't lost in a strange land.

다음 날 아침에 다시 꾸란으로 돌아오곤 했습니다.

그 세상은 매우 친숙한 곳이긴 합니다.

And yet, the terrain was very familiar.

The Koran declares that it comes to renew the message

꾸란은 토라와 복음서의 (주. 토라: 모세 5경)

말씀을 새롭게 하기 위해 나왔다고 선언합니다.

of the Torah and the Gospels.

So one-third of it reprises the stories of Biblical figures

그래서 꾸란의 1/3은

성경 속의 인물에 대한 이야기가 반복되죠.

like Abraham, Moses, Joseph, Mary, Jesus.

예를 들어 아브라함이나 모세,

요셉, 마리아, 예수 같은 인물들 말이죠.

알라는

God himself was utterly familiar

from his earlier manifestation as Yahweh,

다른 어떤 신도 용납하지 않는 질투 많은

jealously insisting on no other gods.

The presence of camels, mountains, desert wells and springs

꾸란 속에 나오는 낙타와 산

사막의 우물과 샘 같은 것들은

took me back to the year I spent wandering the Sinai Desert.

제가 시나이 사막에서 방랑하며

보냈던 해를 기억하게 했죠.

그리고, 언어에 관한 것도 있습니다.

And then there was the language, the rhythmic cadence of it,

아랍어의 리드미컬한 운율은

reminding me of evenings spent listening to Bedouin elders

나이 지긋한 베두인들이 (역주: 베두인은 사막에서 유목 생활을 하는 아랍인)

순전히 기억력만으로 설화시를 긴 시간 읊조리는 걸

recite hours-long narrative poems

들으며 보냈던 밤을 떠올리게 했죠.

entirely from memory.

그리고 나서 이해하게 되었죠.

And I began to grasp why it's said

왜 꾸란은 아랍어로 된 꾸란만이

that the Koran is really the Koran only in Arabic.

진정한 꾸란이라고 하는지 말이죠.

오직 아랍어로 된 꾸란 말입니다.

Take the Fatihah, the seven-verse opening chapter

파티하를 예로 들면 (역주: 파티하는 성경의 주기도문에 해당하는 꾸란의 첫 수라)

파티하는 일곱 아야트로 구성된 꾸란의 개경장(開經章)인데요, 알라신의 기도와 (역주: 아야트는 성경의 "절"에 해당)

that is the Lord's Prayer and the Shema Yisrael of Islam combined.

쉐마 이스라엘이 섞여 있는 부분이죠. (역주: 쉐마 이스라엘은 이슬람 교도가 매일 아침 저녁으로 하는 기도에서 읽히는 성경 구절)

It's just 29 words in Arabic,

쉐마 이스라엘은 아랍어로는 29개 단어로 구성돼 있는데,

번역하면 65~72개 단어로 늘어나죠.

but anywhere from 65 to 72 in translation.

그리고 뭔가를 덧붙이면 덧붙일수록,

And yet the more you add, the more seems to go missing.

뭔가가 사라지는 것처럼 느껴집니다.

아랍어는 어떤 주술적인,

The Arabic has an incantatory, almost hypnotic quality

거의 최면적인 특성을 갖고 있죠.

that begs to be heard rather than read,

읽혀지기 보다는 들어지길 바라고,

분석되기 보다는 느껴지길 바라는 그런 특성입니다.

felt more than analyzed.

It wants to be chanted out loud,

꾸란은 그 음악의 소리가

to sound its music in the ear and on the tongue.

귀와 입에 걸리도록 큰 소리로 찬송되길 원합니다.

그래서 영어로 번역된 꾸란은

So the Koran in English is a kind of shadow of itself,

꾸란의 그림자 정도입니다.

or as Arthur Arberry called his version,

혹은 아더 아베리가 그의 번역본을 지칭한 것처럼 (역주: 아더 아베리는 영국의 동양학자. 꾸란 영역본을 씀)

"an interpretation."

"의미 번역"일 뿐이죠.

But all is not lost in translation.

그래도 번역 과정에서 모든 게 없어지는 건 아닙니다.

꾸란에서 약속했듯이, 인내는 보상받는 법이죠.

As the Koran promises, patience is rewarded,

and there are many surprises --

그리고 많은 놀라운 부분이 발견할 수 있는데,

a degree of environmental awareness, for instance,

예를 들면, 환경에 대한 인식의 정도나

and of humans as mere stewards of God's creation,

인간은 단지 알라신의 창조물을 관리하는 집사로 보는 것들 같은 거죠.

성경과는 다른 부분입니다.

unmatched in the Bible.

And where the Bible is addressed exclusively to men,

성경에서는 2인칭, 3인칭 남성형을 사용해서

using the second- and third-person masculine,

남성만을 유독 언급한 반면,

꾸란은 여성을 포함하고 있습니다.

the Koran includes women --

talking, for instance,

예를 들어,

of believing men and believing women,

믿음을 가진 남자와 믿음을 가진 여자 -

honorable men and honorable women.

고결한 남자와 고결한 여자 라고 일컫는 부분이죠.

Or take the infamous verse about killing the unbelievers.

그리고 악명높은 구절을 하나 예로 들자면,

불신자들을 죽이라는 부분인데요.

네, 정말 그렇게 말하고 있습니다. (역주: 바까라 2:191)

Yes, it does say that,

but in a very specific context:

하지만 좀 더 자세히 살펴보도록 하죠:

the anticipated conquest of the sanctuary city of Mecca,

불신자들을 살해하라는 건

원래는 싸움이 금지된 성스러운 메카가

where fighting was usually forbidden.

정복 당하고 박해받을 때의 이야기입니다.

And the permission comes hedged about with qualifiers.

그게 가능한 것은 일정 조건에 제약되어 있습니다.

Not "You must kill unbelievers in Mecca,"

그러니까 메카에서 불신자들을 죽여야 한다는게 아니라,

but you can, you are allowed to,

그럴 수 있지만 이런 경우만 된다는 것이죠.

but only after a grace period is over,

오직 영과의 기간이 지났을 때만,

and only if there's no other pact in place,

적절한 협정을 맺지 못했을 때만,

and only if they try to stop you getting to the Kaaba,

그들이 카바로 가는 걸 막았을 때만 (주. 카바: 이슬람교도가 가장 신성시하는 메카에 있는 신전)

and only if they attack you first.

그들이 먼저 공격했을 때만,

And even then -- God is merciful;

신은 자비롭습니다.

forgiveness is supreme --

and so, essentially,

better if you don't.

This was perhaps the biggest surprise --

이 부분이 아마도 가장 놀라운 부분일 텐데.

how flexible the Koran is,

at least in minds that are not fundamentally inflexible.

"Some of these verses are definite in meaning," it says,

"and others are ambiguous."

The perverse at heart will seek out the ambiguities,

trying to create discord by pinning down meanings of their own.

Only God knows the true meaning.

하지만 오직 알라만이 참 뜻을 알고 있습니다.

The phrase "God is subtle" appears again and again,

"알라는 섬세하시다" 라는 구절은

꾸란에 반복적으로 나옵니다.

and indeed, the whole of the Koran is far more subtle

정말이지 꾸란 전체는 우리가 믿어왔던 것보다

than most of us have been led to believe.

훨씬 더 섬세합니다.

예를 들어,

As in, for instance, that little matter of virgins and paradise.

순결한 여성과 천국에 대한

그 사소한 문제는

Old-fashioned orientalism comes into play here.

The word used four times is "houris,"

꾸란에 4번 사용되는 단어가 있는데

rendered as dark-eyed maidens with swelling breasts,

or as fair, high-bosomed virgins.

혹은 몸매가 아름다운 절세 미인 순결한 여성 정도입니다.

하지만 원래 아랍어로는

Yet all there is in the original Arabic is that one word: houris.

그냥 "히와르 아인"이라는 한 단어입니다.

Not a swelling breast or high bosom in sight.

봉긋한 가슴에 몸매가 좋은, 뭐 이런 게 아니에요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

Now this may be a way of saying "pure beings," like in angels,

이건 아마 어떤 순수한 존재,

--천사 같은-- 그런 존재를 말하려고 한 것일지도 모릅니다.

아니면 영원한 젊음을 간직하는 그리스의 쿠로스나 그 짝인 코레와 같은

or it may be like the Greek "kouros" or "kore,"

그런 것을 말한 것일 수도 있고요.

an eternal youth.

But the truth is, nobody really knows.

하지만 진실은 아무도 모릅니다.

And that's the point.

그게 포인트에요.

Because the Koran is quite clear

꾸란은 다음과 같은 부분에서 상당히 분명하게 말하는데,

when it says that you'll be "a new creation in paradise,"

꾸란에서 너희들이

"천국의 새 창조물이 될 것이다"라는 부분과

and that you will be "recreated in a form unknown to you,"

"땅 속에 묻혀 흙이 된 후 다시 창조된다"

라고 하는 부분이 있습니다.

which seems to me a far more appealing prospect

이 부분들이 저한테는 히와르 아인보다는

than a virgin.

훨씬 더 매력적입니다.

(Laughter)

And that number 72 never appears.

그 72라는 숫자는 전혀 나오지 않아요.

There are no 72 virgins in the Koran.

72명의 순결한 여성은

꾸란에는 없는 존재죠.

That idea only came into being 300 years later,

그건 300년 정도 지난 후에 나온 얘기고요,

and most Islamic scholars see it as the equivalent

대부분의 이슬람 학자들은 72명의 순결한 여성을

of people with wings sitting on clouds and strumming harps.

구름 위에 앉아 하프를 켜는

날개를 가진 인물로 봅니다.

Paradise is quite the opposite.

천국은 사실 정 반대죠.

그건 동정(童貞)이 아닌,

It's not virginity;

it's fecundity;

비옥함입니다.

it's plenty.

천국은 넉넉하고,

흐르는 강으로

It's gardens watered by running streams.

풍족한 정원입니다.
