1986, much, much longer before people started talking

I just started testing the paper tube

in order to use this as a building structure.

It's very complicated to test the new material for the building,

but this is much stronger than I expected,

and also it's very easy to waterproof,

and also, because it's industrial material,

it's also possible to fireproof.

Then I built the temporary structure, 1990.

This is the first temporary building made out of paper.

There are 330 tubes, diameter 55 [centimeters],

there are only 12 tubes with a diameter

Year 2000, there was a big expo in Germany.

I was asked to design the building,

because the theme of the expo was environmental issues.

So I was chosen to build the pavilion out of paper tubes,

recyclable paper.

My goal of the design is not when it's completed.

My goal was when the building was demolished,

because each country makes a lot of pavilions

لأن العديد من الدول تبني الكثير من الأجنحة

but after half a year, we create a lot of industrial waste,

ولكن بعد نصف عام ينتهي دورها و تخلف الكثير من النفايات الصناعية،

so my building has to be reused or recycled.

لذا كان الهدف من المبنى الذي صممته هو إعادة تدويره بالكامل

After, the building was recycled.

بعد الانتهاء من استخدامه اماكنية اعادة تدويره بالكامر

So that was the goal of my design.

و هذا كان هدفي التصميمي

Then I was very lucky to win the competition

و قد كنت محظوظاً جداً بالفوز بمنافسة آخرى

to build the second Pompidou Center in France

لبناء مركز بومبيدو الثاني في فرنسا

in the city of Metz.

في مدينة ميتز.

Because I was so poor,

ولانني لا أملك الكثير من المال

I wanted to rent an office in Paris,

و كنت أرغب في استئجار مكتب في باريس،

but I couldn't afford it,

so I decided to bring my students to Paris

to build our office on top of the Pompidou Center in Paris

So we brought the paper tubes and the wooden joints

to complete the 35-meter-long office.

We stayed there for six years without paying any rent.

Thank you. I had one big problem.

Because we were part of the exhibition,

even if my friend wanted to see me, they had to buy a ticket to see me.

That was the problem.

Then I completed the Pompidou Center in Metz.

It's a very popular museum now,

and I created a big monument for the government.

But then I was very disappointed

at my profession as an architect,

because we are not helping, we are not working for society,

but we are working for privileged people,

rich people, government, developers.

They have money and power.

Those are invisible.

So they hire us to visualize their power and money

by making monumental architecture.

That is our profession, even historically it's the same,

even now we are doing the same.

So I was very disappointed that we are not working for society,

even though there are so many people

who lost their houses by natural disasters.

But I must say they are no longer natural disasters.

For example, earthquakes never kill people,

That's the responsibility of architects.

Then people need some temporary housing,

but there are no architects working there

because we are too busy working for privileged people.

So I thought, even as architects,

we can be involved in the reconstruction of temporary housing.

We can make it better.

So that is why I started working in disaster areas.

ولهذا بدأت العمل في مناطق الكوارث.

1994, there was a big disaster in Rwanda, Africa.

عام 1994، كان هناك كارثة كبيرة في رواندا، أفريقيا.

Two tribes, Hutu and Tutsi, fought each other.

إذ إقتتلت قبيلتي الهوتو والتوتسي

Over two million people became refugees.

و بات هناك أكثر من 2 مليون لاجئ.

But I was so surprised to see the shelter, refugee camp

ولكن فوجئت حين نظرت إلى المأوى، ومخيم للاجئين

organized by the U.N.

الذي نظمته الأمم المتحدة.

They're so poor, and they are freezing

لقد كان هزيلاً جداً و كان الناس يتجمدون من البرد

with blankets during the rainy season,

رغم وجود البطانيات خلال موسم الأمطار

In the shelters built by the U.N.,

ففي الملاجئ التي بنتها الأمم المتحدة،

they were just providing a plastic sheet,

كانت تقدم فحسب أقمشة من البلاستيك

and the refugees had to cut the trees, and just like this.

وكان يتوجب على اللاجئين قطع الأشجار، لكي يعيشوا بشيء من هذا القبيل الذي يظهر لكم في الصورة

But over two million people cut trees.

ولكن تخيلوا وجود 2 مليون شخص يرغبون بقطع الأشجار.

It just became big, heavy deforestation

لقد شرعوا بإزالة الغابات الكبيرة و وتيرة مسرعة

and an environmental problem.

مما سبب مشكلة بيئية كبيرة

That is why they started providing aluminum pipes, aluminum barracks.

ولهذا السبب بدأوا بتوفير أنابيب معدينة و ثكنات مسبقة الصنع

Very expensive, they throw them out for money,

ولكنها مكلفة للغاية مما هدر ميزانية العون

then cutting trees again.

و من ثم عادوا لقطع الأشجار مرة أخرى.

So I proposed my idea to improve the situation

لذا اقترحت فكرتي لتحسين الوضع

using these recycled paper tubes

لأجل استخدام أنابيب الورق المقوى المعاد تدويرها

because this is so cheap and also so strong,

لانها قوية جداً ورخيصة جداً

but my budget is only 50 U.S. dollars per unit.

وكانت ميزانيتي فقط 50 دولاراً لكل وحدة سكنية

We built 50 units to do that as a monitoring test

قمنا ببناء 50 وحدة للقيام كتجربة لمعرفة صمود الوحدات

for the durability and moisture and termites, so on.

فيما يخص المتانة والرطوبة والنمل الأبيض، و هلم جرا.

And then, year afterward, 1995, in Kobe, Japan,

ومن ثم، بعد سنة بعد على ذلك، عام 1995، في كوبي، اليابان،

we had a big earthquake.

Nearly 7,000 people were killed,

and the city like this Nagata district,

all the city was burned in a fire after the earthquake.

And also I found out there's many Vietnamese refugees

So I went there and also I proposed to the priests,

And he said, "Oh God, are you crazy?

After a fire, what are you proposing?"

ألم ترى أن الحريق أكل المبنى , ما الذي تقترحه مبنى آخر من الورق ؟!؟ "

So he never trusted me, but I didn't give up.

لم يثق بي، و لكني لم أستسلم

I started commuting to Kobe,

لقد بدأت بالانتقال إلى كوبي،

and I met the society of Vietnamese people.

والتقيت بمجتمع الشعب الفيتنامي.

They were living like this with very poor plastic sheets

كانوا يعيشون هكذا مع الأغطية البلاستيكية السيئة للغاية كهذه التي تظهر في الصورة

in the park.

في الحديقة.

So I proposed to rebuild. I raised -- did fundraising.

لذا اقترحت إعادة بناء. فقمت بجمع التبرعات.

I made a paper tube shelter for them,

و صنعت ملاجىء من أنابيب الورق المقوى

and in order to make it easy to be built by students

و كان من السهل بناء تلك الملاجىء بواسطة طلابي

and also easy to demolish,

وأيضا من السهل هدمها،

I used beer crates as a foundation.

كنت قد استخدمت صناديق البيرة كأساسات

I asked the Kirin beer company to propose,

وطلبت من شركة كيرين للبيرة مساعدتي

because at that time, the Asahi beer company

لأنه في ذلك الوقت، كانت شركة البيرة أساهي

made their plastic beer crates red,

تصنع صناديق البيرة بلاستيكية حمراء،

which doesn't go with the color of the paper tubes.

و التي لا تتوافق مع لون أنابيب الورق المقوى .

The color coordination is very important.

فتنسيق الألوان مهم جداً.

And also I still remember, we were expecting

وأيضا ما زلت أتذكر، كنا نتصور

to have a beer inside the plastic beer crate,

أن يرسلوا لنا صناديق البيرة بأكملها

but it came empty. (Laughter)

ولكنها وصلتنا فارغة من علب البيرة (ضحك)

So I remember it was so disappointing.

أتذكر أن الامر كان مخيبا للآمال.

So during the summer with my students,

we built over 50 units of the shelters.

Finally the priest, finally he trusted me to rebuild.

وأخيراً الكاهن أعرب عن ثقته بي لإعادة بناء الكنسية

He said, "As long as you collect money by yourself,

bring your students to build, you can do it."

وبإحضار طلابك لأجل البناء يمكنك أن تفعل ذلك ".

So we spent five weeks rebuilding the church.

It was meant to stay there for three years,

but actually it stayed there 10 years because people loved it.

Then, in Taiwan, they had a big earthquake,

and we proposed to donate this church,

فاقترحنا أن نتبرع بهذه الكنيسة،

so we dismantled them,

we sent them over to be built by volunteer people.

و أرسلناها لهم و أعيد بناؤها بواسطة المتطوعين.

It stayed there in Taiwan as a permanent church even now.

So this building became a permanent building.

Then I wonder, what is a permanent and what is a temporary building?

Even a building made in paper

can be permanent as long as people love it.

يمكن أن يغدو مبنى دائم إن أحبه الناس

Even a concrete building can be very temporary

و مبنى الخرسانة المسلحة يمكن أن يكون مؤقتاً إن لم يعجب الناس أو إن

if that is made to make money.

In 1999, in Turkey, the big earthquake,

I went there to use the local material to build a shelter.

2001, in West India, I built also a shelter.

In 2004, in Sri Lanka, after the Sumatra earthquake

and tsunami, I rebuilt Islamic fishermen's villages.

And in 2008, in Chengdu, Sichuan area in China,

وفي عام 2008، في منطقة سيتشوان تشنغدو في الصين،

nearly 70,000 people were killed,

حين قتل ما يقارب من 70 ألف شخص،

and also especially many of the schools were destroyed

ودمر عدد كبير من المدارس

because of the corruption between the authority and the contractor.

I was asked to rebuild the temporary church.

طلب مني إعادة بناء كنيسة مؤقتة.

I brought my Japanese students to work with the Chinese students.

أحضرت طلبتي اليابانيين للعمل مع الطلبة الصينيين.

In one month, we completed nine classrooms,

و في شهر واحد، أكملنا بناء تسعة فصول

over 500 square meters.

بمساحة تزيد على 500 متر مربع.

It's still used, even after the current earthquake in China.

و تلك الفصول لا تزال تستخدم، حتى بعد الزلزال الأخير في الصين.

In 2009, in Italy, L'Aquila, also they had a big earthquake.

في عام 2009، في إيطاليا ضرب زلزال بقوة كبيرة "لاأكويلا"

And this is a very interesting photo:

and Japanese former former former former Prime Minister Mr. Aso --

you know, because we have to change the prime minister ever year.

And they are very kind, affording my model.

و لقد كانوا لطفاء جداً في عرض نموذجي في البناء

I proposed a big rebuilding, a temporary music hall,

و قد اقترحت حينها إعادة بناء قاعة كبيرة مؤقتة للموسيقى

because L'Aquila is very famous for music

لأن "لاأكويلا" مشهورة جداً بالموسيقى

and all the concert halls were destroyed,

وكان الزلزال قد دمر جميع قاعات الاحتفال

so musicians were moving out.

فكان الموسيقيين يرحلون عن "لاأكويلا"

So I proposed to the mayor,

لذا اقترحت على رئيس البلدية،

I'd like to rebuild the temporary auditorium.

رغبتي بإعادة بناء قاعة مؤقتة.

He said, "As long as you bring your money, you can do it."

وقال "طالما أنك تجلب المال لذلك يمكنك أن تقوم بذلك "

And I was very lucky.

وكنت محظوظاً جداً.

Mr. Berlusconi brought G8 summit,

and our former prime minister came,

so they helped us to collect money,

and I got half a million euros from the Japanese government

to rebuild this temporary auditorium.

Year 2010 in Haiti, there was a big earthquake,

سنة 2010 في هايتي أيضاً حدث زلزال كبير،

but it's impossible to fly over,

ولكن من المستحيل أن نطير إلى هناك

so I went to Santo Domingo, next-door country,

فذهبت إلى سانتو دومينغو البلد المجاور،

to drive six hours to get to Haiti

وقدنا السيارة ستة ساعات للوصول هايتي

with the local students in Santo Domingo

to build 50 units of shelter out of local paper tubes.

This is what happened in Japan two years ago, in northern Japan.

وهذا ما حدث في اليابان منذ عامين، في شمال اليابان.

After the earthquake and tsunami,

بعد الزلزال والتسونامي،

people had to be evacuated in a big room like a gymnasium.

وكان يتم إخلاء الناس إلى غرف كبيرة مثل قاعات المدارس للألعاب رياضية.

But look at this. There's no privacy.

ولكن انظروا إلى هذا. لا توجد أية خصوصية.

People suffer mentally and physically.

مما يسبب معاناة نفسية و جسدية

So we went there to build partitions

لذا ذهبنا إلى هناك لبناء القواطع

with all the student volunteers with paper tubes,

و بمساعدة الطلبة المتطوعون و انابيب الورق المقوى

just a very simple shelter out of the tube frame and the curtain.

بات الامر هكذا بعد تصميم و بناء اطارات بسيطة من الورق المقوى

However, some of the facility authority

ومع ذلك بعض القائمين على الملاجىء

doesn't want us to do it, because, they said,

لم يحبذوا الفكرة كثيراً ولم يريدونا أن نفعل ذلك كما قالوا

simply, it's become more difficult to control them.

لانه و ببساطة، تصبح عملية السيطرة على اللاجئين أكثر صعوبة

But it's really necessary to do it.

ولكن كان من الضروري حقاً القيام بذلك.

They don't have enough flat area to build

لم يكن هناك مساحة افقية كافية لبناء

standard government single-story housing like this one.

المباني القياسية الحكومية ذات الطابق الواحد مثل تلك

Look at this. Even civil government is doing

انظروا إلى هذا. حتى المباني التي تبنيها الحكومة كانت

such poor construction of the temporary housing,

كهذه الصورة ضعيفة البنية جداً كمبنى مؤقت

so dense and so messy because there is no storage, nothing, water is leaking,

وكانت ضيقة للغاية و لم يكن هناك مجال لتخزين أي شيء بالاضافة إلى تسرب المياه بسهولة الى داخلها

so I thought, we have to make multi-story building

ففكرت أن نشرع ببناء مبنى متعدد الطوابق

because there's no land and also it's not very comfortable.

بسبب عدم وجود مساحة افقية كافية لبناء مبان بطابق واحد

So I proposed to the mayor while I was making partitions.

لذا اقترحت ذلك على رئيس البلدية حينما كنت أعمل معهم في بناء القواطع

Finally I met a very nice mayor in Onagawa village

وأخيراً التقيت بعمدة لطيف جداً في قرية اوناغاوا

in Miyagi.

في مياجي.

He asked me to build three-story housing on baseball [fields].

طلب مني بناء مبنى من ثلاثة طوابق في ملعب بيسبول

I used the shipping container

فاستخدمت حاويات الشحن

and also the students helped us to make

وأيضا ساعدني الطلاب في تصميم و صنع

all the building furniture

كل أثاث المبنى

to make them comfortable,

لجعلها مريحة،

within the budget of the government

و ضمن ميزانية الحكومة

but also the area of the house is exactly the same,

و قد كانت مساحة وحدة السكن تماما كما تلك

but much more comfortable.

ولكنها أكثر راحة.

Many of the people want to stay here forever.

العديد من الأشخاص أرادوا البقاء هنا إلى الأبد.

I was very happy to hear that.

كنت سعيداً جداً لسماع ذلك.

Now I am working in New Zealand, Christchurch.

الآن أنا أعمل في نيوزيلندا، كرايست تشيرش.

About 20 days before the Japanese earthquake happened,

فقبل حوالي 20 يوما من الزلزال الياباني،

also they had a big earthquake,

أصابهم زلزال كبير

and many Japanese students were also killed,

and the most important cathedral of the city,

the symbol of Christchurch, was totally destroyed.

And I was asked to come to rebuild the temporary cathedral.

So this is under construction.

And I'd like to keep building monuments

فأنا أعشق أن أحافظ على النصب و المبان التذكارية

that are beloved by people.
