I was basically concerned about what was going on in the world.

I couldn't understand

the starvation, the destruction,

the killing of innocent people.

Making sense of those things

is a very difficult thing to do.

And when I was 12, I became an actor.

I was bottom of the class. I haven't got any qualifications.

I was told I was dyslexic.

In fact, I have got qualifications.

I got a D in pottery, which was the one thing that I did get --

which was useful, obviously.

And so concern

is where all of this comes from.

And then, being an actor, I was doing these different kinds of things,

and I felt the content of the work that I was involved in

really wasn't cutting it, that there surely had to be more.

And at that point, I read a book by Frank Barnaby,

this wonderful nuclear physicist,

and he said that media had a responsibility,

حيث قال بانه تقع مسؤولية كبيرة على الاعلام

that all sectors of society had a responsibility

وبان جميع القطاعات في المجتمع تتحمل ذات المسؤولية

to try and progress things and move things forward.

مسؤولية المحاولة و تطوير الاشياء والتقدم بها للامام

And that fascinated me,

وذلك اذهلني

because I'd been messing around with a camera most of my life.

لانني كنت اعبث بالكاميرا معظم حياتي

And then I thought, well maybe I could do something.

وبعدها فكرت, حسنا ربما بمقدوري ان افعل شيئا

Maybe I could become a filmmaker.

ربما يمكنني ان اصبح صانع افلام

Maybe I can use the form of film constructively

ربما يمكنني استخدام الافلام بشكل بناء

to in some way make a difference.

حتى يمكنني احداث تغيير ما

Maybe there's a little change I can get involved in.

ربما يكون هناك القليل من التغيير الذي من الممكن ان اساهم فيه

So I started thinking about peace,

لذا بدأت بالتفكير بالسلام

and I was obviously, as I said to you,

وكنت وبكل وضوح كما سبق ان اخبرتكم

very much moved by these images,

trying to make sense of that.

واحاول ان اجعلها منطقية

Could I go and speak to older and wiser people

هل عليي ان الجأ للتحدث للناس الاكبر سنا والاكثر حكمة

who would tell me how they made sense

of the things that are going on?

كيف حولو هذه الاشياء التي تجري الى منطق؟

Because it's obviously incredibly frightening.

لأن هذه الأشياء وبكل وضوح مثيرة للرعب بشكل لا يصدق

But I realized that,

ولكنني أدركت

having been messing around with structure as an actor,

بانني بينما كنت أتلاعب بتركيب النص كممثل

that a series of sound bites in itself wasn't enough,

that there needed to be a mountain to climb,

there needed to be a journey that I had to take.

And if I took that journey,

no matter whether it failed or succeeded, it would be completely irrelevant.

فلا يهم فيما اذا نجحت او فشلت فهو امر لا علاقة له ابدا

The point was that I would have something

المهم ان أكون قادرا على الحصول على شيء ما

to hook the questions of -- is humankind fundamentally evil?

استطيع ان اعلق عليه اجابة لأسئلتي ... هل جميع البشر اشرار؟

Is the destruction of the world inevitable? Should I have children?

هل كل الدمار الذي في العالم محتوم؟ هل عليي ان انجب اطفالا؟

Is that a responsible thing to do? Etc., etc.

هل احضارهم الى العالم عمل مسؤول؟ الخ ...الخ

So I was thinking about peace,

لذا كنت افكر بالسلام

and then I was thinking, well where's the starting point for peace?

وبعدها امعنت التفكير حول أين يمكن أن تكمن بداية السلام؟

And that was when I had the idea.

وهناك خطرت لي هذه الفكرة

There was no starting point for peace.

لا يوجد نقطة بداية للسلام

There was no day of global unity.

لا يوجد يوم للوحدة العالمية

There was no day of intercultural cooperation.

لا يوجد يوم محدد لتكاتف الثقافات

There was no day when humanity came together,

لا يوجد يوم محدد تتعاضد فيه الانسانية

separate in all of those things

بعيدا عن كل تلك الاشياء

and just shared it together --

نحن فقط مجتمعين مع بعضنا

that we're in this together,

على اننا في هذا معا

and that if we united and we interculturally cooperated,

وبأننا اذا كنا متحدين ومتعاونين ثقافيا وحضاريا

then that might be the key to humanity's survival.

ربما سيكون هذا هو مفتاح انقاذ البشرية

That might shift the level of consciousness

وربما يرفع مستوى الوعي

around the fundamental issues that humanity faces --

if we did it just for a day.

So obviously we didn't have any money.

I was living at my mom's place.

And we started writing letters to everybody.

و بدأنا نكتب الرسائل للجميع

You very quickly work out what is it that you've got to do

وعلى الفور عملنا على ما يجب علينا فعله

to fathom that out.

لسبر غور المشكلة

How do you create a day voted by every single head of state in the world

كيف يمكننا ان ننشئ يوما يصوت فيه رئيس كل دولة في هذا العالم

to create the first ever Ceasefire Nonviolence Day,

على ان نخصص يوم للا عنف ووقف اطلاق النار في كل العالم

the 21st of September?

و على ان يكون يوم الحادي والعشرون من سبتمبر؟

And I wanted it to be the 21st of September

لقد أردته ان يكون في الحادي والعشرين من سبتمبر

because it was my granddad's favorite number.

اولا لأنه كان رقم جدي المفضل

He was a prisoner of war.

حيث كان سجين حرب

He saw the bomb go off at Nagasaki.

و شاهد القنبلة تنفجر في ناجازاكي

It poisoned his blood. He died when I was 11.

وكانت قد سممت دمه. وتوفي عندما كنت في الحادية عشر من عمري

So he was like my hero.

لذا كان بطلي

And the reason why 21 was the number is

وسببا اخر لكونه الرقم 21

700 men left, 23 came back,

هو انه 700 رجل رحلو و 23 منهم عادو

two died on the boat and 21 hit the ground.

توفي اثنين على متن القارب و 21 استطاعو الوصول لليابسة

And that's why we wanted it to be the 21st of September as the date of peace.

ولذلك اخترت تاريخ 21 من سبتمبر

So we began this journey,

لذا بدأنا رحلتنا

and we launched it in 1999.

و انطلقنا في عام 1999

And we wrote to heads of state, their ambassadors,

وكتبنا لرؤساء الدول وسفرائهم

Nobel Peace laureates, NGOs, faiths,

وللحائزين على جائزة نوبل للسلام وللمنظمات غير الحكومية، وللعقائد

various organizations -- literally wrote to everybody.

وللعديد من المنظمات المختلفة ,حرفيا, كتبنا للجميع

And very quickly, some letters started coming back.

وبسرعة كبيرة بدأت تأتينا بعض الردود

And we started to build this case.

وبدأنا بالعمل على تأسيس هذه القضية

And I remember the first letter.

وما زلت اذكر رسالتي الأولى

One of the first letters was from the Dalai Lama.

كانت احدى هذه الرسائل من الدالاي لاما

And of course we didn't have the money; we were playing guitars

وبالطبع لم يكن لدينا المال، بل كنا كمن يلعب على الاوتار

and getting the money for the stamps that we were sending out all of [this mail].

للحصول على الاموال التي علينا ارسالها من البريد

A letter came through from the Dalai Lama saying,

تلقينا رسالة من الدالاي لاما تقول

"This is an amazing thing. Come and see me.

"انه لأمر عظيم , تعالو لنتقابل

I'd love to talk to you about the first ever day of peace."

أود ان اتحدث اليكم حول اول يوم مخصص للسلام على الاطلاق"

And we didn't have money for the flight.

ولكن لم يكن لدينا المال الكافي لنسافر

And I rang Sir Bob Ayling, who was CEO of BA at the time,

خاطبت السيد بوب ايلنج الذي كان رئيس المكتب التنفيذي لخطوط الطيران البريطانية في ذلك الوقت

and said, "Mate, we've got this invitation.

وقلت له " يا صديقي لدينا هذه الدعوة

Could you give me a flight? Because we're going to go see him."

هل تستطيع تأمين رحلة طيران الى هناك لاننا نريد ان نقابله"

And of course, we went and saw him and it was amazing.

وبالطبع ذهبنا و رأيناه وكان ذلك رائعا

And then Dr. Oscar Arias came forward.

وبعدها تقدم الدكتور اوسكار ارياس

And actually, let me go back to that slide,

وفي الحقيقة, دعوني اولا اعود الي تلك الصورة,

because when we launched it in 1999 --

لانه عندما اطلقنا الفكرة كان ذلك في عام 1999

this idea to create the first ever day of ceasefire and non-violence --

فكرة ان نخلق أول يوم على الأطلاق لايقاف اطلاق النار ووقف العنف

we invited thousands of people.

حيث دعونا الاف من الناس

Well not thousands -- hundreds of people, lots of people --

حسنا لم يكونو الاف بل كانو مئات من الناس , الكثير منهم

all the press, because we were going to try and create

ودعونا كل الصحافة لاننا كنا نحاول خلق اول يوم للسلام العالمي على الاطلاق

the first ever World Peace Day, a peace day.

يوم للسلام

And we invited everybody,

و دعونا جميع الافراد

and no press showed up.

ولكن لم يظهر اي من الصحفيين

There were 114 people there -- they were mostly my friends and family.

وكان هناك 114 شخص هناك واغلبهم من الاصدقاء والعائلة

And that was kind of like the launch of this thing.

هكذا بدأت مسيرة اطلاق تلك الفكرة

But it didn't matter because we were documenting, and that was the thing.

ولكن لم يهمنا الامر لاننا كنا نوثق ذلك

For me, it was really about the process.

It wasn't about the end result.

And that's the beautiful thing about the camera.

وذلك كان الشيء الجميل في الكاميرا

They used to say the pen is mightier than the sword. I think the camera is.

كانو دوما يقولون :"بان حد القلم امضى من حد السيف" ولكنني كنت اعتقد بان حد الكاميرا اقوى

And just staying in the moment with it was a beautiful thing

حيث يمكنك الاحتفاظ باللحظات الجميلة

and really empowering actually.

وان تبقيها واقعية بالحقيقة

So anyway, we began the journey.

على كل حال بدأنا رحلتنا

And here you see people like Mary Robinson, I went to see in Geneva.

وبدأنا برؤية الناس مثل ماري روبنسون حيث قابلتها في جينيفا

I'm cutting my hair, it's getting short and long,

وقصصت شعري. تارة قصير و أخرى طويل

because every time I saw Kofi Annan,

لانني كنت أخشى في كل مرة أقابل فيها كوفي عنان

I was so worried that he thought I was a hippie that I cut it,

ان يعتقد بأني هيبي لذا قصصته

and that was kind of what was going on.

وهذا ما كان يحدث.

(Laughter)

Yeah, I'm not worried about it now.

أجل, لم أعد أقلق حول ذلك الان.

So Mary Robinson,

قالت لي ماري روبنسون

she said to me, "Listen, this is an idea whose time has come. This must be created."

" هذه الفكرة قد حان وقتها وعلينا انجازها"

Kofi Annan said, "This will be beneficial to my troops on the ground."

وقال كوفي عنان "هذا سيكون مفيدا لقواتي على أرض الواقع"

The OAU at the time, led by Salim Ahmed Salim,

أما رئيس منظمة الاتحاد الافريقي سالم أحمد سالم قال

said, "I must get the African countries involved."

"عليي أن أحصل على مشاركة الدول الافريقية في هذا الصدد"

Dr. Oscar Arias, Nobel Peace laureate,

الدكتور أوسكار أرياس ، الحائز على جائزة نوبل للسلام

president now of Costa Rica,

والرئيس الحالي لكوستا ريكا

said, "I'll do everything that I can."

قال " سأبذل كل ما في وسعي"

So I went and saw Amr Moussa at the League of Arab States.

حتى انني ذهبت ورأيت عمرو موسى في جامعة الدول العربية

I met Mandela at the Arusha peace talks,

التقيت مانديلا في محادثات أروشا للسلام.

and so on and so on and so on --

وهلم جرا ....

while I was building the case

بينما كنت اعمل على بناء هذه القضية

to prove whether this idea

لأثبت فيما اذا كانت هذه الفكرة

would make sense.

ستجدي نفعا

And then we were listening to the people. We were documenting everywhere.

ومن ثم كنا نستمع الى الناس ونقوم بتوثيقها في كل مكان

76 countries in the last 12 years, I've visited.

قمت بزيارة 76 بلد في السنوات الاثني عشرة الماضية

And I've always spoken to women and children wherever I've gone.

وكنت حتى أخاطب النساء والأطفال حيثما ذهبت

I've recorded 44,000 young people.

قمت بالتسجيل ل44 الف شاب

I've recorded about 900 hours of their thoughts.

سجلت حوالي 900 ساعة عن أفكارهم

I'm really clear about how young people feel

أنا واضح جدا حول ما يشعر به الشباب

when you talk to them about this idea

عندما تحدثهم عن هذه الفكرة

of having a starting point for their actions for a more peaceful world

بوجود نقطة انطلاق لأعمالهم من أجل عالم أكثر سلما

through their poetry, their art, their literature,

من خلال شعرهم ,فنهم, أدبهم

their music, their sport, whatever it might be.

موسيقاهم , رياضتهم , أيا كانت تكن

And we were listening to everybody.

كنا نستمع للجميع

And it was an incredibly thing, working with the U.N.

وكان العمل مع منظمة الأمم المتحدة شيء لا يصدق

and working with NGOs and building this case.

وايضا العمل مع المنظمات غير الحكومية على بناء هذه القضية

I felt that I was presenting a case

شعرت بأنني اقدم دعوى

on behalf of the global community

نيابة عن المجتمع الدولي

to try and create this day.

لمحاولة خلق هذا اليوم

And the stronger the case and the more detailed it was,

كلما كانت الدعوى اقوى وأكثر تفصيلا

the better chance we had of creating this day.

كلما كانت فرصة تحقيق هذا اليوم أفضل

And it was this stuff, this,

وكانت هذه الأمور, نعم هذه الامور هي

where I actually was in the beginning

حيث تكمن في الواقع نقطة البداية

kind of thinking no matter what happened, it didn't actually matter.

كنت أفكر بأنه مهما حدث لا تهمني النتيجة بالفعل

It didn't matter if it didn't create a day of peace.

لا يهم اذا ما فشلت في تحقيق يوم للسلام

The fact is that, if I tried and it didn't work,

ومتيمنا بحقيقة انه اذا حاولت ولم تنجح الفكرة

then I could make a statement

فسوف أكون قادرا على الأقل أن أدلي ببيان

about how unwilling the global community is to unite --

عن مدى عدم رغبة المجتمع العالمي بالاتحاد

until, it was in Somalia, picking up that young girl.

الى أن كنت في الصومال وحملت تلك الفتاة الصغيرة

And this young child

وذلك الولد الصغير

who'd taken about an inch and a half out of her leg with no antiseptic,

الذي بتر انش ونصف من ساقه من دون استخدام مطهر

and that young boy who was a child soldier,

وذلك الولد الذي اصبح جنديا منذ طفولته

who told me he'd killed people -- he was about 12 --

الذي أخبرني بأنه قام بقتل الناس وهو في عمر الثانية عشر فقط

these things made me realize

هذه الأمور جعلتني أدرك

that this was not a film that I could just stop.

بأن ما أقوم به ليس فيلما ويمكنني ايقاف تصويره متى أردت

And that actually, at that moment something happened to me,

وفعلا ، في تلك اللحظة حدث شيء لي

which obviously made me go, "I'm going to document.

الأمر الذي من الواضح أنه جعلني اتقدم بهدفي " سوف أقوم بالتوثيق"

If this is the only film that I ever make,

I'm going to document until this becomes a reality."

Because we've got to stop, we've got to do something

where we unite --

separate from all the politics and religion

that, as a young person, is confusing me.

I don't know how to get involved in that process.

And then on the seventh of September, I was invited to New York.

وبعد ذلك في السابع من سبتمبر, دعيت الى نيويورك

The Costa Rican government and the British government

حيث قامت حكومة كوستا ريكا والحكومة البريطانية

had put forward to the United Nations General Assembly,

بوضع الفكرة قدما الى الجمعية العامة للامم المتحدة

with 54 co-sponsors,

مع اربع وخمسون من الراعين

the idea of the first ever Ceasefire Nonviolence Day,

فكرة أول يوم للا عنف ووقف اطلاق النار على الاطلاق

the 21st of September, as a fixed calendar date,

وذلك بيوم محدد في التقويم وهو الحادي والعشرين من سبتمبر

and it was unanimously adopted by every head of state in the world.

واعتمد بالإجماع من قبل رؤساء كل دول العالم.

Yeah, but there were hundreds of individuals, obviously, who made that a reality.

من الواضح أنه كان هناك المئات من الافراد الذين ساهموا بتحويل ذلك الى حقيقة

And thank you to all of them.

واقدم جزيل الشكر لكل منهم

That was an incredible moment.

كانت تلك لحظة لا تصدق

I was at the top of the General Assembly just looking down into it and seeing it happen.

كنت بقمة الجمعية العامة اتطلع اليها وارى ذلك يحدث

And as I mentioned, when it started,

وكما ذكرت انفا عندما بدأت

we were at the Globe, and there was no press.

كنا وحدنا في هذا العالم ولم يكن هناك صحافة

And now I was thinking, "Well, the press it really going to hear this story."

والان كنت أفكر "الصحافة حتما ستسمع بهذه القصة الان"

And suddenly, we started to institutionalize this day.

وفجأة، بدأنا في ترسيخ هذا اليوم.

Kofi Annan invited me on the morning of September the 11th

ودعاني كوفي عنان في صباح الحادي عشر من سبتمبر

to do a press conference.

لاجراء مؤتمر صحفي

And it was 8:00 AM when I stood there.

وكانت الساعة الثامنة صباحا عندما وقفت هناك

And I was waiting for him to come down, and I knew that he was on his way.

كنت بانتظاره حتى يأتي و كنت اعلم بأنه في طريقه الي

And obviously he never came down. The statement was never made.

ولكن ومن الواضح أنه لم يأتي. ولم يقدم البيان أبدا

The world was never told there was a day of global ceasefire and nonviolence.

ولم يتم ابدا ابلاغ العالم بأنه يوجد يوم عالمي لاطلاق النار ووقف العنف

And it was obviously a tragic moment

وكانت حتما لحظة مأساوية

for the thousands of people who lost their lives,

بالنسبة لالاف الناس الذين فقدوا حياتهم هناك

there and then subsequently all over the world.

وايضا اولئك في كل انحاء العالم

It never happened.

لم يحدث ذلك ابدا

And I remember thinking,

واذكر باني كنت افكر

"This is exactly why, actually,

we have to work even harder.

And we have to make this day work.

It's been created; nobody knows.

But we have to continue this journey,

and we have to tell people,

And I left New York freaked,

but actually empowered.

And I felt inspired

by the possibilities

that if it did, then maybe we wouldn't see things like that.

I remember putting that film out and going to cynics.

اذكر كيف اني اخذت الفلم واعطيته للمسرح الساخر

I was showing the film,

كنت اعرض لهم الفلم

and I remember being in Israel and getting it absolutely slaughtered

اذكر انني كنت في اسرائيل وارى الفكرة مذبوحة تماما

by some guys having watched the film --

من قبل بعض الشباب الذين شاهدو الفلم

that it's just a day of peace, it doesn't mean anything.

وخلصوا لأن مجرد يوم واحد للسلام ولا يعني شيئا

It's not going to work; you're not going to stop the fighting in Afghanistan;

وبأنها لن تتحقق. انت لن توقف الحرب في افغانستان

the Taliban won't listen, etc., etc.

وطالبان لن تنصت اليك .... وهلم جرا

It's just symbolism.

انها فقط فكرة رمزية

And that was even worse

وهذا كان اسوأ حتى

than actually what had just happened in many ways,

من كل شيء حدث بعدة طرق حتى الان

because it couldn't not work.

لانه لم يكن ممكنا تحقيقها

I'd spoken in Somalia, Burundi, Gaza, the West Bank,

India, Sri Lanka, Congo, wherever it was,

and they'd all tell me, "If you can create a window of opportunity,

we can move aid, we can vaccinate children.

Children can lead their projects.

That's what I'd heard.

هذا ما كنت اسمعه

And I'd heard that from the people who really understood what conflict was about.

وسمعت ذلك من الناس الذين يدركون حقيقة كل تلك النزاعات

And so I went back to the United Nations.

ولذلك عدت الى منظمة الأمم المتحدة

I decided that I'd continue filming and make another movie.

قررت أن اتابع التصوير و أن اصور فلما اخر

And I went back to the U.N. for another couple of years.

وعدت الى منظمة الأمم المتحدة لمدة عامين

We started moving around the corridors of the U.N. system,

بدأنا التنقل في أروقة منظومة الأمم المتحدة ،

governments and NGOs,

والمنظمات الحكومية والغير حكومية

trying desperately to find somebody

في محاولة يائسة للعثور على شخص ما

to come forward and have a go at it,

see if we could make it possible.

And after lots and lots of meetings obviously,

I'm delighted that this man, Ahmad Fawzi,

one of my heroes and mentors really,

أحد أبطالي ومن الموجهين حقا

he managed to get UNICEF involved.

نجح في الحصول على مشاركة منظمة اليونسيف بعد جهد

And UNICEF, God bless them, they said, "Okay, we'll have a go."

واليونيسيف ، بارك الله بهم , قالوا : "حسنا ، سوف نساهم بذلك".

And then UNAMA became involved in Afghanistan.

ومن ثم ساهمت بعثة الأمم المتحدة العاملة في أفغانستان.

It was historical. Could it work in Afghanistan

كان امرا تاريخيا. هل يمكن أن تنجح في افغانستان

with UNAMA and WHO

مع بعثة منظمة الأمم المتحدة ومنظمة الصحة العالمية

and civil society, etc., etc., etc.?

والمجتمع المدني ..... الخ .....الخ؟

And I was getting it all on film and I was recording it,

وكنت احصل على كل ذلك موثقا في فلم حيث كنت اقوم بالتسجيل دوما

and I was thinking, "This is it. This is the possibility of it maybe working.

وكنت افكر " هذه هي اللحظة. لحظة احتمالية تحويلها الى حقيقة"

But even if it doesn't, at least the door is open

ولكن حتى ولو لم تتحقق. على الأقل الباب سيبقى مفتوحا

and there's a chance."

وهناك فرصة لذلك"

And so I went back to London,

وبعدها رجعت الى لندن

and I went and saw this chap, Jude Law.

وذهبت لرؤية الشاب جود لو

And I saw him because he was an actor, I was an actor,

اردت أن اراه لأنه ممثل وأنا ممثل

I had a connection to him,

كان يوجد بيننا ترابط

because we needed to get to the press, we needed this attraction,

لاننا كنا محتاجين للوصول الى الصحافة. كنا بحاجة لجذبهم

we needed the media to be involved.

كنا بحاجة لمشاركة وسائل الاعلام

Because if we start pumping it up a bit maybe more people would listen

ولاننا لو بدأنا بتضخيمها قليلا لربما استمع عدد أكبر من الناس

and there'd be more --

ولكان لدينا المزيد

when we got into certain areas,

عندما نصل لمناطق معينة

maybe there would be more people interested.

ربما لكان ازداد عدد المهتمين

And maybe we'd be helped financially a little bit more,

ولربما تم اعانتنا ماليا بشكل اكبر بقليل

which had been desperately difficult.

لان ايجاد التمويل كان صعبا جدا

I won't go into that.

لن اتطرق لذلك الان

So Jude said, "Okay, I'll do some statements for you."

قال جو " حسنا, انا ساكتب بعض البيانات من اجلك"

While I was filming these statements, he said to me, "Where are you going next?"

بينماكنت اسجل هذه البيانات سالني "اين ستكون محطتك التالية؟"

I said, "I'm going to go to Afghanistan." He said, "Really?"

فقلت له " ساذهب الى افغانستان " فقال " حقا؟؟"

And I could sort of see a little look in his eye of interest.

واستطعت أن أرى بريقا من الاهتمام و التشوق في عينيه

So I said to him, "Do you want to come with me?

لذا سألته " هل تود المجيء معي؟"

It'd be really interesting if you came.

ستكون تجربة ممتعة جدا اذا اتيت

It would help and bring attention.

ولسوف تساعدني أكثر و تلفت الانتباه

And that attention

وهذا الانتباه

would help leverage the situation,

سيكون له دور بالاستفادة من هذا الوضع

as well as all of the other sides of it."

فضلا عن كل الجوانب الأخرى"

I think there's a number of pillars to success.

أعتقد أن هناك عددا من الركائز لتحقيق النجاح.

One is you've got to have a great idea.

احد هذه الركائز هو ان تكون لديك فكرة رائعة

The other is you've got to have a constituency, you've got to have finance,

والأخرى هي ان يكون لديك جمهور من المناصرين وقدرة على التمويل

and you've got to be able to raise awareness.

يجب أن تكون قادرا على رفع الوعي

And actually I could never raise awareness by myself, no matter what I'd achieved.

وفي الواقع لا يمكنني رفع مستوى الوعي بمفردي, مهما تكن انجازاتي

So these guys were absolutely crucial.

ولذلك فان وجود هؤلاء الاشخاص أمر حاسم

So he said yes,

ولذا قد وافق

and we found ourselves in Afghanistan.

ووجدنا أنفسنا في أفغانستان

It was a really incredible thing that when we landed there,

كان شيئا لا يصدق عندما هبطنا هناك

I was talking to various people, and they were saying to me,

كنت أخاطب عدة اشخاص

"You've got to get everybody involved here.

"عليك أن تحصل على مشاركة الجميع هنا"

You can't just expect it to work. You have to get out and work."

لا يمكنك فقط أن تتوقع منها أن تنجح بمفردها. عليك أن تنطلق وتعمل بجد "

And we did, and we traveled around,

وفعلنا ذلك وسافرنا في الارجاء

and we spoke to elders, we spoke to doctors, we spoke to nurses,

تحدثنا الى المسنين وتحدثنا الى الاطباء وتحدثنا الى الممرضات

we held press conferences, we went out with soldiers,

عقدنا مؤتمرات صحفية وخرجنا مع الجنود

we sat down with ISAF, we sat down with NATO,

جلسنا مع حلف شمال الأطلسي كما جلسنا مع حلف الناتو

we sat down with the U.K. government.

جلسنا مع حكومة المملكة البريطانية المتحدة

I mean, we basically sat down with everybody --

ما اعنيه هو أننا بشكل اساسي جلسنا مع الجميع

in and out of schools with ministers of education,

داخل وخارج المدارس مع وزراء الثقافة

holding these press conferences,

نقوم بعقد مؤتمرات صحفية معهم

which of course, now were loaded with press, everybody was there.

والتي حتما الان لدى الصحافة لان الجميع كانو هناك

There was an interest in what was going on.

كان يوجد اهتمام كبير بما كان يجري

This amazing woman, Fatima Gailani, was absolutely instrumental in what went on

السيدة المذهلة فاطمة مجالاني كانت حتما عنصرا فعالا فيما كان يجري

as she was the spokesperson for the resistance against the Russians.

وكانت الناطق باسم المقاومة ضد الروس.

And her Afghan network

وشبكة علاقاتها الافغانية

was just absolutely everywhere.

كانت حتما في كل مكان

And she was really crucial in getting the message in.

وكان دورها حاسما جدا في ايصال الرسالة

And then we went home. We'd sort of done it.

وبعدها عدنا الى الوطن. وكنا نوعا ما على وشك تحقيق ما نصبو اليه

We had to wait now and see what happened.

كان علينا أن ننتظر ونرى ما سيحدث

And I got home,

وعدت الى الوطن

and I remember one of the team bringing in a letter to me

واتذكر ان احد اعضاء الفريق احضر لي رسالة

from the Taliban.

كانت الرسالة من طالبان

And that letter basically said, "We'll observe this day.

وكانت تقول بشكل رئيسي " سوف نشهد هذا اليوم."

We will observe this day.

سوف نشهد هذا اليوم

We see it as a window of opportunity.

ونرى انها كانت فرصة سانحة

And we will not engage. We're not going to engage."

ونحن لن نحارب .لن ننشغل بشيء"

And that meant that humanitarian workers

وهذا يعني أن العاملين في المجال الإنساني

wouldn't be kidnapped or killed.

لن يتم اختطافهم أو قتلهم

And then suddenly, I obviously knew at this point, there was a chance.

وفجأة علمت وبوضوح في هذه اللحظة أن الفرصة سانحة

And days later,

وبعد أيام

1.6 million children were vaccinated against polio

تم تطعيم 1.6 مليون طفل ضد شلل الأطفال

as a consequence of everybody stopping.

نتيجة لتوقف الجميع

And like the General Assembly,

ومثل الجمعية العامة

obviously the most wonderful, wonderful moment.

كانت حتما أكثر اللحظات روعة

And so then we wrapped the film up and we put it together

وعندها جهزنا الفلم و جمعناه

because we had to go back.

لانه كان يتوجب علينا العودة

We put it into Dari and Pashto. We put it in the local dialects.

وجعلنا الفلم في الداري والباشتو. كما وضعناه باللهجات المحلية.

We went back to Afghanistan,

وعدنا الى افغانستان

because the next year was coming, and we wanted to support.

لان العام القادم كان اتيا و علينا ان ندعمه

But more importantly, we wanted to go back,

والأكثر اهميه كان علينا العودة

because these people in Afghanistan were the heroes.

لان هؤلاء الناس في افغانستان هم الابطال

They were the people who believed in peace

هم كانوا من امن بالسلام

and the possibilities of it, etc., etc. -- and they made it real.

وبامكانية حدوثه... الخ ... الخ وهم فعلا من حققوه

And we wanted to go back and show them the film

ولذا أردنا العودة لعرض الفلم لهم

and say, "Look, you guys made this possible. And thank you very much."

ونقول لهم " أنظروا . انتم من جعلتم هذا ممكنا. ونشكركم جزيل الشكر"

And we gave the film over.

وسلمناهم الفلم

Obviously it was shown, and it was amazing.

بشكل واضح تم عرضه وكان مذهلا

And then that year, that year, 2008,

وعندها في تلك السنة 2008

this ISAF statement from Kabul, Afghanistan, September 17th:

صدر بيان حلف شمال الاطلسي من كابل بافغانستان في السابع عشر من سبتمبر

"General Stanley McChrystal,

"الجنرال ستانلي مكريستال

commander of international security assistance forces in Afghanistan,

قائد قوات المساعدة الأمنية الدولية في أفغانستان ،

announced today ISAF will not conduct offensive military operations

أعلنت قوة المساعدة الامنية الدولية اليوم سوف توقف عملياتها العسكرية الهجومية

on the 21st of September."

في ال 21 من سبتمبر

They were saying they would stop.

كانو يقولون بانهم سوف يتوقفون

And then there was this other statement

ومن ثم جاء هذا البيان الاخر

that came out from the U.N. Department of Security and Safety

الذي جاء من مجلس الامن

saying that, in Afghanistan,

والذي يقول بأنه في افغانستان

because of this work,

بسبب كل هذا العمل

the violence was down by 70 percent.

العنف كان قد انخفض الى 70 بالمئة

70 percent reduction in violence on this day at least.

70 بالمئة من انخفاض العنف في ذلك اليوم على الأقل

And that completely blew my mind

وجعلني هذا مذهولا تماما

almost more than anything.

اكثر من أي شيء اخر

And I remember being stuck in New York, this time because of the volcano,

و اذكر باني كنت عالقا في نيويورك , هذه المرة بسبب البركان

which was obviously much less harmful.

والذي كان من الواضح اقل ضررا بكثير

And I was there thinking about what was going on.

وكنت أفكر حول ما كان يجري

And I kept thinking about this 70 percent.

وبقيت افكر بنسبة السبعين بالمئة

70 percent reduction in violence --

انخفاض العنف 70 بالمئة

in what everyone said was completely impossible

وكل ما قاله الجميع كان مستحيلا

and you couldn't do.

ولم يكن بمقدورك فعل شيء

And that made me think that, if we can get 70 percent in Afghanistan,

وهذا جعلني أفكر بأنه بما أننا حصلنا على هذه النسبة المنخفضة في افغانستان

then surely we can get 70 percent reduction everywhere.

فانه من الأكيد يمكننا تحقيق هذه النسبة في كل مكان

We have to go for a global truce.

علينا أن نمضي في هدنة عالمية

We have to utilize this day of ceasefire and nonviolence

علينا الاستفادة من هذا اليوم من وقف إطلاق النار واللاعنف

and go for a global truce,

وأن نمضي نحو هدنة عالمية

go for the largest recorded cessation of hostilities,

نمضي نحو اعظم توقف للاعمال العدائية أمكن تسجيلها

both domestically and internationally, ever recorded.

سواء محليا أو دوليا

That's exactly what we must do.

هذا ما يجب علينا فعله بالضبط

And on the 21st of September this year,

وفي الواحد والعشرين من سبتمبر لهذا العام

we're going to launch that campaign at the O2 Arena

سوف نطلق هذه الحملة في حلبة او تو

to go for that process,

لنقوم بهذه العملية

to try and create the largest recorded cessation of hostilities.

ونحاول خلق اكبر تسجيل لوقف الاعمال العدائية على الاطلاق

And we will utilize all kinds of things --

وسوف نستخدم كل الأشياء --

have a dance and social media

لنقوم بالرقص والاعلام الاجتماعي

and visiting on Facebook and visit the website, sign the petition.

ونقوم بزيارة الفيسبوك أوزيارة مواقع الانترنت، والتوقيع على العريضة

And it's in the six official languages of the United Nations.

باللغات الرسمية الست للأمم المتحدة.

And we'll globally link with government, inter-government,

وسوف نرتبط عالميا مع الحكومة و والمنظمات الحكومية الدولية

non-government, education, unions, sports.

غير الحكومية، والتعليم، والنقابات، والرياضة.

And you can see the education box there.

ويمكنك ان ترى مربع التعليم هناك.

We've got resources at the moment in 174 countries

لدينا موارد في الوقت الراهن في 174 بلدا

trying to get young people to be the driving force

في محاولة لجعل الشباب القوة الدافعة

behind the vision of that global truce.

وراء رؤية تلك الهدنة العالمية.

And obviously the life-saving is increased, the concepts help.

ومن الواضح أنه ازدادت نسبة انقاذ الحياة بمساعدة هذه المفاهيم

Linking up with the Olympics --

من خلال الترابط مع الاولومبياد

I went and saw Seb Coe. I said, "London 2012 is about truce.

ذهبت ورأيت سب كو. وقلت " لندن 2012 هي حول الهدنة

Ultimately, that's what it's about."

في نهاية المطاف هذا هو كل ما يدور حوله الأمر

Why don't we all team up? Why don't we bring truce to life?

لماذا لا نكون كفريق واحد؟ لماذا لا نقيم هدنة في الحياة؟

Why don't you support the process of the largest ever global truce?

We'll make a new film about this process.

We'll utilize sport and football.

On the Day of Peace, there's thousands of football matches all played,

في يوم السلام العالمي. يوجد الاف المباريات الرياضية التي تقام

from the favelas of Brazil to wherever it might be.

من مهرجانات البرازيل الى اي مكان يمكن ان تحدث فيه

So, utilizing all of these ways

لذا علينا استخدام كل هذه السبل

to inspire individual action.

حتى نلهم العمل الفردي

And ultimately, we have to try that.

وبنهاية المطاف علينا تجريب كل ذلك

We have to work together.

علينا العمل معا

And when I stand here in front of all of you,

وعندها اقف هنا امامكم جميعا

and the people who will watch these things,

وأمام الناس الذين سيشاهدون هذه الاشياء

I'm excited, on behalf of everybody I've met,

انا متشوق . بالنيابة عن كل شخص قابلته

that there is a possibility that our world could unite,

لوجود امكانية ان نجعل عالمنا كله يتحد

that we could come together as one,

وبأنه يمكننا ان نكون مع بعضنا يدا واحدة

that we could lift the level of consciousness around the fundamental issues,

brought about by individuals.

I was with Brahimi, Ambassador Brahimi.

وقد كنت مع السفير ابراهيمي

I think he's one of the most incredible men

واعتقد بأنه احد اروع الرجال

in relation to international politics -- in Afghanistan, in Iraq.

بعلاقته بالسياسات الخارجية في افغانستان والعراق

He's an amazing man.

انه رجل مذهل

And I sat with him a few weeks ago.

وجلست معه منذ عدة اسابيع مضت

And I said to him, "Mr. Brahimi, is this nuts, going for a global truce?

وقلت له " سيد ابراهيمي هل الحصول على هدنة عالمية ضرب من الجنون ؟

Is this possible? Is it really possible that we could do this?"

هل هو أمر ممكن؟ هل حقا من الممكن ان نقوم بذلك؟"

He said, "It's absolutely possible."

قال " بالتأكيد ممكن"

I said, "What would you do?

فسألته " ماذا كنت ستفعل؟"

Would you go to governments and lobby and use the system?"

"هل كنت ستذهب الى الحكومات واللوبي وتستخدم النظام؟"

He said, "No, I'd talk to the individuals."

قال "لا, سأكلم الأفراد"

It's all about the individuals.

كل الأمر يتعلق بالأفراد"

It's all about you and me.

كله يتعلق بك وبي.

It's all about partnerships.

كله يتعلق حول الشراكة

It's about your constituencies; it's about your businesses.

تتعلق بالدوائر الانتخابية وتتعلق بالاعمال

Because together, by working together,

لانه معا, بالعمل معا

I seriously think we can start to change things.

اعتقد جديا بانه يمكننا تغيير الاشياء

And there's a wonderful man sitting in this audience, and I don't know where he is,

يوجد رجل رائع يجلس بين الحضور, ولا اعرف اين هو,

who said to me a few days ago -- because I did a little rehearsal --

الذي قال لي قبل بضعة أيام .... لانني قمت ببعض البروفات

and he said, "I've been thinking about this day

حيث قال "كنت أفكر بهذا اليوم

and imagining it as a square

واتخيله كالمربع

with 365 squares,

في داخله 365 مربع

and one of them is white."

واحدهم فقط أبيض"

And it then made me think about a glass of water, which is clear.

وبعدها جعلني افكر بكوب من الماء والذي هو واضح

If you put one drop,

اذا وضعت قطرة واحدة,

one drop of something, in that water,

قطرة واحدة من شيء ما , في هذا الكوب من الماء,

it'll change it forever.

فانها سوف تغيرها للأبد

By working together, we can create peace one day.

بالعمل مع بعضنا يمكننا صنع السلام ليوم واحد
