I was basically concerned about what was going on in the world.

Making sense of those things

is a very difficult thing to do.

And when I was 12, I became an actor.

제가 12살이 되었을때, 배우가 되었습니다.

I was bottom of the class. I haven't got any qualifications.

당시 저는 반에서 꼴찌였고, 그래서 어떤 자격도 없었습니다.

I was told I was dyslexic.

난독증도 앓고 있었죠.

In fact, I have got qualifications.

그런데 사실 전, 자격이 있었는지도모릅니다.

I got a D in pottery, which was the one thing that I did get --

도자기 수업에서 D를 받았기 때문이죠. 제가 학점을 받을 수 있었던 유일한 과목이었습니다.

which was useful, obviously.

사실 전혀 쓸모없었던 학점이었지만요. (반어적 의미)

And so concern

이렇듯 자격도 없었던 저였지만

is where all of this comes from.

평화에 대한 관심이 이 모든 것을 시작하게 해주었습니다.

And then, being an actor, I was doing these different kinds of things,

그 이후에 배우의 삶을 살면서, 여러가지 다른 일들에도 손을 댔었죠.

and I felt the content of the work that I was involved in

제가 하고 있던 여러가지일에

really wasn't cutting it, that there surely had to be more.

부족함을 느꼈고, 뭔가 해야만 하는 일이 더 있을거라는 확신이 들었습니다.

And at that point, I read a book by Frank Barnaby,

그리고 바로 그 때에, Frank Barnaby의 책을 읽게 된 것입니다.

this wonderful nuclear physicist,

훌륭한 핵 물리학자였던 이 분은,

and he said that media had a responsibility,

미디어가 책임이 있다고 말했습니다.

that all sectors of society had a responsibility

사회의 모든 분야가

to try and progress things and move things forward.

무언가를 시도하고 과정을 밟고 전진해나가는 것에 책임이 있다고 하셨죠.

And that fascinated me,

바로 이 사실에 저는 매료되었습니다.

because I'd been messing around with a camera most of my life.

왜냐하면 저는 일생의 대부분을 카메라를 들고 빈둥거렸기 때문입니다.

And then I thought, well maybe I could do something.

Maybe I could become a filmmaker.

Maybe I can use the form of film constructively

to in some way make a difference.

Maybe there's a little change I can get involved in.

So I started thinking about peace,

이를 계기로 평화에 대해 생각해보기 시작했습니다.

and I was obviously, as I said to you,

그리고 제가 여러분께 말씀드렸던 것 처럼,

very much moved by these images,

이 사진들을 보고 너무나 마음이 아팠습니다.

trying to make sense of that.

이런 상황을 납득해보려고 노력했죠.

Could I go and speak to older and wiser people

연륜이 있고 현명한 분들을 찾아가

who would tell me how they made sense

어떻게 지금도 버젓이 일어나고 있는 이런 일들을 받아들이고 있는건지

of the things that are going on?

답해 줄 수 있을까 하고 생각했습니다.

Because it's obviously incredibly frightening.

왜냐하면 이러한 상황들이 너무나도 놀라웠기 때문입니다.

But I realized that,

하지만 전,

having been messing around with structure as an actor,

배우라는 자격으로 빈둥대며 다니면서

that a series of sound bites in itself wasn't enough,

인상적인 말만 하는 건 충분치 않다는 것을 깨달았습니다.

that there needed to be a mountain to climb,

넘어야 할 산이 있었고,

there needed to be a journey that I had to take.

제가 반드시 나서야 할 여정이 있었습니다.

And if I took that journey,

no matter whether it failed or succeeded, it would be completely irrelevant.

실패든 성공이든, 결과는 전혀 중요치않을 것입니다.

The point was that I would have something

to hook the questions of -- is humankind fundamentally evil?

Is the destruction of the world inevitable? Should I have children?

Is that a responsible thing to do? Etc., etc.

아이를 키우는 건 책임감있는 행동일까? 등등에 대해서 말이죠.

So I was thinking about peace,

그래서 평화에 대해 생각했습니다.

and then I was thinking, well where's the starting point for peace?

그리고 과연 어디가 평화의 시작점일까 생각해봤습니다.

And that was when I had the idea.

바로 이 때가 제가 이 아이디어를 갖게 된 순간이었습니다.

There was no starting point for peace.

평화의 시작점이라는 것은 존재하지 않습니다.

There was no day of global unity.

전세계가 하나가 되는 날도 없습니다.

There was no day of intercultural cooperation.

여러 문화가 함께하는 날도 없습니다.

There was no day when humanity came together,

인류애가 다같이 모이는 날도 없습니다.

separate in all of those things

각자가 다 다르지만

and just shared it together --

모두 다 함께

that we're in this together,

공유한다면,

and that if we united and we interculturally cooperated,

그리고 우리가 합동해서 서로 문화적으로 협력하면,

then that might be the key to humanity's survival.

바로 이것이 인류가 살아남는 열쇠가 될 것 입니다.

That might shift the level of consciousness

또한 이것이 인류가 직면하고 있는

around the fundamental issues that humanity faces --

기본적인 의문에 대한 우리의 의식 수준을 바꾸어줄 것입니다.

if we did it just for a day.

만약 우리가 하루만이라도 그렇게 보낸다면 말이죠.

So obviously we didn't have any money.

하지만 당시 저와 제 동료는 돈이 한푼도 없었습니다.

I was living at my mom's place.

심지어 저는 어머니 집에 얹혀살고 있었죠.

And we started writing letters to everybody.

그래서 저희는 사람들에게 편지를 쓰기 시작했습니다.

You very quickly work out what is it that you've got to do

그러면서 무엇을 해야하는지

to fathom that out.

재빨리 깨달았습니다.

How do you create a day voted by every single head of state in the world

세계 각국의 모든 대통령들이 지지하는

to create the first ever Ceasefire Nonviolence Day,

최초의 휴전과 비폭력의 날을

the 21st of September?

9월 21일로 어떻게 정할지 방법을 깨닫게 된 것입니다.

And I wanted it to be the 21st of September

제가 9월 21일로 정하고 싶었던 이유는

because it was my granddad's favorite number.

저희 할아버지께서 가장 좋아하셨던 숫자였기 때문입니다.

He was a prisoner of war.

할아버지께선 전쟁 포로셨습니다.

He saw the bomb go off at Nagasaki.

나가사키에 폭탄이 떨어지는 걸 목격하셨었죠.

It poisoned his blood. He died when I was 11.

결국 독성이 혈관에 퍼졌고 제가 11살때 세상을 떠나셨습니다.

So he was like my hero.

할아버진 제 영웅이셨습니다.

And the reason why 21 was the number is

할아버지께서 21을 좋아하셨던 이유는

700 men left, 23 came back,

당시 700명이 떠나 23명이 돌아오던 중,

two died on the boat and 21 hit the ground.

선박에서 두명이 죽고 21명만이 살아돌아왔기 때문입니다.

And that's why we wanted it to be the 21st of September as the date of peace.

바로 이것이 우리가 9월 21일로 지정하고 싶은 이유입니다.

So we began this journey,

그렇게 우리는 여정을 시작했습니다.

and we launched it in 1999.

1999년 첫 시작을 알렸습니다.

And we wrote to heads of state, their ambassadors,

그리고 각국의 대통령과 외교관,

Nobel Peace laureates, NGOs, faiths,

노벨상 수상자와 NGO(비정부 기관), 종교인,

various organizations -- literally wrote to everybody.

그리고 다양한 협회, 즉 거의 모든사람들에게 직접 손으로 쓴 편지를 보냈습니다.

And very quickly, some letters started coming back.

이 중 일부는 신속하게 답변을 보내왔습니다.

And we started to build this case.

그리고 저희는 계획을 실행하기 시작했습니다.

And I remember the first letter.

아직도 첫번째 답장이 기억납니다.

One of the first letters was from the Dalai Lama.

And of course we didn't have the money; we were playing guitars

and getting the money for the stamps that we were sending out all of [this mail].

A letter came through from the Dalai Lama saying,

"This is an amazing thing. Come and see me.

"정말 대단한 계획입니다. 오셔서 만나뵙기를 바랍니다.

I'd love to talk to you about the first ever day of peace."

여러분께 평화의 날을 시작하는 첫날에 대해서 얘기를 나누고 싶군요."

And we didn't have money for the flight.

우리는 비행기 표를 살 만한 돈이 없었습니다.

And I rang Sir Bob Ayling, who was CEO of BA at the time,

그래서 당시 영국항공의 회장이었던 밥 에일링(Bob Ayling)에게 전화를 걸었습니다.

and said, "Mate, we've got this invitation.

그리고 이렇게 말했죠. "회장님, 저희는 달라이 라마의 초대를 받았습니다.

Could you give me a flight? Because we're going to go see him."

비행기 티켓을 제공해주실 수 있으십니까? 그 분을 만나뵈러가야 합니다."

And of course, we went and saw him and it was amazing.

물론, 우린 비행기를 타고 건너가 그를 만날 수 있었고 이는 경탄할 만한 일이었습니다.

And then Dr. Oscar Arias came forward.

그리고 오스카 아리아스(Oscar Arias) 박사님이 다음으로 손길을 내미셨습니다.

And actually, let me go back to that slide,

because when we launched it in 1999 --

1999년에

this idea to create the first ever day of ceasefire and non-violence --

바로 비폭력과 휴전의 날을 만들자는 아이디어를 내놓은 날

we invited thousands of people.

우리는 대략 천 명을 초대했습니다.

Well not thousands -- hundreds of people, lots of people --

사실, 천명 까지는 아니고 백여명정도를 초청했죠. 꽤나 많은 수였습니다.

all the press, because we were going to try and create

모든 언론사도 초대했습니다. 왜냐하면 우리가 바로

the first ever World Peace Day, a peace day.

세계 평화의 날이라는 아이디어를 처음으로 선보였기때문입니다.

And we invited everybody,

모든 이들을 초대했지만,

and no press showed up.

어떤 언론사측에서도 오지 않았습니다.

There were 114 people there -- they were mostly my friends and family.

당시 114명이 모였었는데 대개 친구나 가족들이었습니다.

And that was kind of like the launch of this thing.

대수롭지 않은 것을 발표하는 날같았죠.

But it didn't matter because we were documenting, and that was the thing.

하지만 별로 상관없었습니다. 이 상황을 기록했고, 그것이 중요했기 때문입니다.

For me, it was really about the process.

저에게는, 과정이 중요했습니다.

It wasn't about the end result.

결과는 중요치 않았습니다.

And that's the beautiful thing about the camera.

They used to say the pen is mightier than the sword. I think the camera is.

사람들은 펜이 칼보다 강하다고 하지만 제 생각엔 카메라가 더 강하다고 봅니다.

And just staying in the moment with it was a beautiful thing

아름다움이 있는 그 순간에 머무를 수 있고,

and really empowering actually.

실제로 힘을 가질 수 있게해주기 때문입니다.

So anyway, we began the journey.

아무튼, 우리는 여정을 시작했습니다.

And here you see people like Mary Robinson, I went to see in Geneva.

여기 보시는 메리 로빈슨(Mary Robinson)과 같은 사람들을 만나기위해 제네바로 떠났습니다.

I'm cutting my hair, it's getting short and long,

머리도 잘랐죠. 길고 짧고를 왔다갔다 했는데,

because every time I saw Kofi Annan,

그 이유는 코피 아난(Kofi Annan)을 만날 때마다,

I was so worried that he thought I was a hippie that I cut it,

저를 히피족이라고 생각할까봐 걱정됐기 때문입니다. 그래서 잘랐죠.

and that was kind of what was going on.

그래서 그렇게 된 거랍니다.

(Laughter)

Yeah, I'm not worried about it now.

So Mary Robinson,

메리 로빈슨은,

she said to me, "Listen, this is an idea whose time has come. This must be created."

Kofi Annan said, "This will be beneficial to my troops on the ground."

코피 아난은 "저의 군대에 이득이 되겠군요"라고 말했습니다.

The OAU at the time, led by Salim Ahmed Salim,

당시 살림 아메드 살림(Salim Ahmed Alim)은 OAU(아프리카 통합 기구)를 이끌었는데,

said, "I must get the African countries involved."

"제가 반드시 아프리가 국가들을 참여시키겠습니다."라고 답했습니다.

Dr. Oscar Arias, Nobel Peace laureate,

그리고 노벨 평화상 수상자인 오스카 아리아스 박사는,

president now of Costa Rica,

현재 코스타 리카의 대통령직을 수행하고 있으며,

said, "I'll do everything that I can."

"제가 할 수 있는 것은 모두 하겠습니다" 라고 답했죠.

So I went and saw Amr Moussa at the League of Arab States.

그리고 저는 아랍연맹의 아무르 무사(Amr Moussa)를 만나러 갔습니다.

I met Mandela at the Arusha peace talks,

그리고 아루샤 평화 회담에서 만델라(Mandela)도 만났죠.

and so on and so on and so on --

그리고 또 만남과 만남을 반복했습니다.

while I was building the case

제가 이 일을 추진하면서

to prove whether this idea

이 아이디어가

would make sense.

실현될 수 있는 생각이라는 사실을 입증하기 위해서 였습니다.

And then we were listening to the people. We were documenting everywhere.

그리고 사람들에게 귀를 기울였습니다. 또 각지에서 영상을 찍었습니다.

76 countries in the last 12 years, I've visited.

지난 12년간 76개국을 방문했습니다.

And I've always spoken to women and children wherever I've gone.

그리고 어디를 방문하든 항상 여성과 아이들과 얘기를 나누었습니다.

I've recorded 44,000 young people.

저는 4만4000명의 젊은이들을 찍었습니다.

I've recorded about 900 hours of their thoughts.

그들의 생각을 900시간동안 담았죠.

I'm really clear about how young people feel

저는 젊은이들이 어떻게 생각할지 너무나 잘 알고 있습니다.

when you talk to them about this idea

이러한 생각에 대해서 그들에게 말해 줄 때 말이죠.

of having a starting point for their actions for a more peaceful world

더욱 평화로운 세상을 만들기 위해 이들이 시작할 수 있는 일은

through their poetry, their art, their literature,

시와, 예술과, 문학,

their music, their sport, whatever it might be.

또 음악과, 스포츠, 뭐가 됐든 이러한 수단을 통해서 가능하다는 것이었죠.

And we were listening to everybody.

그리고 모든 사람들에게 귀를 기울였습니다.

And it was an incredibly thing, working with the U.N.

유엔과 함께할 수 있었던 것은 믿을 수 없는 일이었습니다.

and working with NGOs and building this case.

또 NGO와 이 과정을 함께 밟아나가는 것도 놀라웠죠.

I felt that I was presenting a case

저는 이 날을 시작하는 것이

on behalf of the global community

국제 사회를 대신해서

to try and create this day.

하고있다는 느낌을 받았습니다.

And the stronger the case and the more detailed it was,

아이디어를 견고히하고 구체화시킬수록,

the better chance we had of creating this day.

이 날을 시작하기 위한 더 좋은 기회를 얻을 수 있었습니다.

And it was this stuff, this,

바로 이런 것입니다.

where I actually was in the beginning

초기단계에 있었을 때

kind of thinking no matter what happened, it didn't actually matter.

어떤 일이 일어나더라도 개의치않을거라고 생각했습니다.

It didn't matter if it didn't create a day of peace.

만약 평화의 날을 시작하지 못했더라도 상관없었습니다.

The fact is that, if I tried and it didn't work,

요지는 이겁니다. 만약 제가 시도를 했는데 효과가 없었다면,

then I could make a statement

저는 이런 얘기를 할 수 있었겠죠.

about how unwilling the global community is to unite --

얼마나 국제 사회가 협력하지 않고 있는지에 대해서 말입니다.

until, it was in Somalia, picking up that young girl.

바로 소말리아에서 한 어린 소녀를 안아 올리기 전까진 그랬죠.

And this young child

이 어린 아이는

who'd taken about an inch and a half out of her leg with no antiseptic,

다리에 약 1인치 반정도 살점을 소독제가 없는 상태에서 떼어내야했고,

and that young boy who was a child soldier,

소년병이었던 이 소년은,

who told me he'd killed people -- he was about 12 --

저에게 사람을 죽여봤다고 하더군요. 이 아이는 겨우 12살이었습니다.

these things made me realize

이러한 사실들이 절 일깨워주었습니다.

that this was not a film that I could just stop.

제가 도저히 그만둘 수 없는 영화를 찍고있다는 것을 말이죠.

And that actually, at that moment something happened to me,

그리고 실제로, 그 순간 저에게 어떤 일이 벌어졌습니다.

which obviously made me go, "I'm going to document.

사실상 제가 "찍어야겠어.

If this is the only film that I ever make,

이게 내가 만들 수 있는 단 한 작품이라면,

I'm going to document until this becomes a reality."

이게 현실이 될수있을 때까지 찍어야겠어' 라고 생각하게 만들어준 사건이죠.

Because we've got to stop, we've got to do something

왜냐하면 우리는 여기서 멈추고 해결책을 찾아야했기 때문입니다.

where we unite --

우리가 함께 힘을 합치고

separate from all the politics and religion

모든 정치와 종교에서 벗어나서 말이죠.

that, as a young person, is confusing me.

한 젊은이로써, 바로 이 생각이 절 혼란스럽게 만들었습니다.

I don't know how to get involved in that process.

왜냐하면 어떻게 이 과정을 밟아나갈 수 있을지 몰랐기 때문입니다.

And then on the seventh of September, I was invited to New York.

그리고 9월 7일, 저는 뉴욕으로부터 초청을 받았습니다.

The Costa Rican government and the British government

코스타 리카 정부와 영국 정부는

had put forward to the United Nations General Assembly,

유엔총회와,

with 54 co-sponsors,

54개의 공동 스폰서에게 제안을 했습니다.

the idea of the first ever Ceasefire Nonviolence Day,

최초로 시작하는 비폭력의 날을

the 21st of September, as a fixed calendar date,

9월 21일로 고정시키자는 것이었습니다.

and it was unanimously adopted by every head of state in the world.

그리고 이 날은 세계 각국의 대통령들이 만장일치로 승인했습니다.

Yeah, but there were hundreds of individuals, obviously, who made that a reality.

네, 하지만 이 날이 현실로 이뤄지기까지 수백명의 개개인들의 노력이 있었습니다.

And thank you to all of them.

이 모든 분들께 감사드립니다.

That was an incredible moment.

이는 정말 위대한 순간 이었습니다.

I was at the top of the General Assembly just looking down into it and seeing it happen.

And as I mentioned, when it started,

we were at the Globe, and there was no press.

And now I was thinking, "Well, the press it really going to hear this story."

Kofi Annan invited me on the morning of September the 11th

to do a press conference.

And it was 8:00 AM when I stood there.

And I was waiting for him to come down, and I knew that he was on his way.

And obviously he never came down. The statement was never made.

The world was never told there was a day of global ceasefire and nonviolence.

세계에 휴전과 비폭력의 날의 존재를 알리지 못한 것입니다.

And it was obviously a tragic moment

정말 비극적인 순간이었죠.

for the thousands of people who lost their lives,

목숨을 잃은 수천명의 사람들에게,

there and then subsequently all over the world.

그 곳에 있었던, 또 전세계 사람들에게도 말이죠.

It never happened.

평화의 날은 이루어지지 않았습니다.

And I remember thinking,

그리고 이런 생각을 했던 것이 기억나네요,

"This is exactly why, actually,

"바로 이런 현실이 왜 우리가

we have to work even harder.

더 열심히 나아가야하는지를 보여주는거야.

And we have to make this day work.

이 날이 효력을 발휘하도록 만들어야해.

It's been created; nobody knows.

이미 날은 만들어졌지만 아무도 모르는게 현실이야.

But we have to continue this journey,

그래도 우린 반드시 이 여정을 계속해야해,

and we have to tell people,

그리고 사람들에게 전해야해,

and we have to prove it can work."

그리고 이 날의 진가를 입증해보이겠어." 라고 생각했죠.

And I left New York freaked,

두려움 속에서 뉴욕을 떠났지만,

but actually empowered.

사실 큰 용기를 얻었습니다.

And I felt inspired

그리고 저는

by the possibilities

실패로 인해 자극을 받았습니다.

that if it did, then maybe we wouldn't see things like that.

만약 바로 성공했더라면, 아마 이런 느낌을 받지 못했을 겁니다.

I remember putting that film out and going to cynics.

이런 감정을 영화에 쏟아넣고 비평가들에게 달려갔습니다.

I was showing the film,

그리고 이 영화를 보여주었습니다.

and I remember being in Israel and getting it absolutely slaughtered

이스라엘에 있으면서 이 영화는 완전히 짓밟혀졌습니다.

by some guys having watched the film --

이것을 본 일부 사람들에 의해서였죠.

that it's just a day of peace, it doesn't mean anything.

그들은 단지 평화의 날을 말하고 있을 뿐, 아무 뜻도 없다고 했습니다.

It's not going to work; you're not going to stop the fighting in Afghanistan;

평화의 날은 효과도 없을 것이고, 당신도 아프가니스탄 내의 전쟁을 막지 못할것이며

the Taliban won't listen, etc., etc.

탈레반은 아예 듣지도 않을거야, 라며

It's just symbolism.

And that was even worse

than actually what had just happened in many ways,

because it couldn't not work.

I'd spoken in Somalia, Burundi, Gaza, the West Bank,

저는 소말리아와 부룬디, 가자지구와 서안지구에도 뜻을 전했습니다.

India, Sri Lanka, Congo, wherever it was,

인디아와 스리랑카, 콩고, 어디가 됐든,

and they'd all tell me, "If you can create a window of opportunity,

모두들 저에게 이렇게 얘기했죠. "만약 당신이 기회를 만들어준다면,

we can move aid, we can vaccinate children.

우리는 도움을 줄것이고, 아이들의 예방접종도 할 수 있을 겁니다.

Children can lead their projects.

아이들은 자신들의 삶을 이끌어 나갈 수 있습니다.

They can unite. They can come together. If people would stop, lives will be saved."

함께 뭉칠 수 있고 함께 할 수 있습니다. 만약 사람들이 악행을 그만둔다면, 생명을 구할 수 있을 것입니다."

That's what I'd heard.

바로 이 말이 제가 들은 말이었습니다.

And I'd heard that from the people who really understood what conflict was about.

그리고 갈등이 뭔지 진정으로 이해하고 있는 사람들에게서 이런 말을 들었죠.

And so I went back to the United Nations.

그리고 저는 유엔으로 돌아왔습니다.

I decided that I'd continue filming and make another movie.

그리고 계속해서 영상을 찍고 또 다른 영화를 제작하리라 결정했죠.

And I went back to the U.N. for another couple of years.

유엔으로 돌아와서 몇년을 보냈습니다.

We started moving around the corridors of the U.N. system,

우리는 유엔의 복도를 바쁘게 돌아다니고,

governments and NGOs,

정부와 NGO에서 활동하기 시작했습니다.

trying desperately to find somebody

그리고 사람들을 열성적으로 찾았습니다.

to come forward and have a go at it,

앞으로 나와 실행에 옮길 인물들을 찾았죠.

see if we could make it possible.

우리가 현실화 시킬 수 있는지를 확인하고싶었습니다.

And after lots and lots of meetings obviously,

사실상 수없이 많은 미팅이 진행되고 난 후에

I'm delighted that this man, Ahmad Fawzi,

저는 아마드 파우지(Ahmad Fawzi)로 인해 기쁨을 만끽했습니다.

one of my heroes and mentors really,

그는 제 영웅이자 멘토인 분 중 한 분이었고,

he managed to get UNICEF involved.

유니세프가 도움을 줄 수 있도록 해주셨기 때문입니다.

And UNICEF, God bless them, they said, "Okay, we'll have a go."

너무나도 감사하게 유니세프는, "좋습니다. 함께 해보죠." 라고 답했습니다.

And then UNAMA became involved in Afghanistan.

UNAMA(유엔 아프가니스탄 지원 단체)도 아프가니스탄의 문제를 함께 하기로 했죠.

It was historical. Could it work in Afghanistan

역사적이지 않을 수 없었습니다. 아프가니스탄에서 과연

with UNAMA and WHO

UNAMA 와 WHO(세계보건기구)

and civil society, etc., etc., etc.?

그리고 시민 단체와 함께 실현할 수 있을까?

And I was getting it all on film and I was recording it,

저는 이 모든 일을 영화에 담았고 기록했습니다.

and I was thinking, "This is it. This is the possibility of it maybe working.

그리고 생각했죠. "바로 이거야. 현실로 될 수 있는 가능성이 있어.

But even if it doesn't, at least the door is open

실패한다해도, 적어도 문은 열려있고

and there's a chance."

기회도 잡을 수 있을거야."

And so I went back to London,

그리고 런던으로 돌아갔습니다.

and I went and saw this chap, Jude Law.

그리고 이 친구를 만났죠. 바로 쥬드 로(Jude Law)입니다.

And I saw him because he was an actor, I was an actor,

제가 그를 만난 것은 그도 배우였고 저 또한 배우였으며

I had a connection to him,

그와 친분이 있었기 때문입니다,

because we needed to get to the press, we needed this attraction,

우리는 언론에 알려야했고 또한 그러한 관심이 필요했습니다,

we needed the media to be involved.

미디어가 끌어들여야할 필요가 있었죠.

Because if we start pumping it up a bit maybe more people would listen

만약 우리가 이를 퍼뜨리기 시작한다면 아마도 더 많은 사람들이 관심을 기울일수 있지 않을까 생각했고

and there'd be more --

아마도 더 많은,

when we got into certain areas,

우리가 어떤 곳에 도달했을때

maybe there would be more people interested.

And maybe we'd be helped financially a little bit more,

또 재정적으로 조금 더 도움을 받을만한 가능성이 있었기 때문입니다.

which had been desperately difficult.

사실 굉장히 재정적으로 힘들었었죠.

I won't go into that.

더 이상 언급하진 않겠습니다만.

So Jude said, "Okay, I'll do some statements for you."

아무튼 쥬드 로가 말하길, "좋아, 내가 몇마디 해줄께."

While I was filming these statements, he said to me, "Where are you going next?"

제가 그 영상들을 찍고 있을 때, 그가 묻더군요. "다음엔 어디로 갈거야?"

I said, "I'm going to go to Afghanistan." He said, "Really?"

저는 대답했죠. "다음엔 아프가니스탄으로 갈거야." 그는 "진짜?"

And I could sort of see a little look in his eye of interest.

저는 그의 눈빛에서 흥미를 느낀다는 것을 눈치챌 수 있었죠.

So I said to him, "Do you want to come with me?

그래서 물어봤죠. "나랑 같이 갈래?

It'd be really interesting if you came.

만약 너도 같이 간다면 정말 좋을거야.

It would help and bring attention.

도움도 되고 관심도 끌 수 있을텐데.

And that attention

그리고 그렇게 관심을 끌면

would help leverage the situation,

지금 상황에 탄력을 줄 수 도 있고

as well as all of the other sides of it."

다른 여러 면에서도 좋은 영향을 줄 수 있을거야."

I think there's a number of pillars to success.

저는 성공에 많은 요소들이 있다고 생각합니다.

One is you've got to have a great idea.

그 중 하나는 현명한 아이디어를 가져야한다는 것입니다.

The other is you've got to have a constituency, you've got to have finance,

또 다른 요소는 지지층을 얻고 재정적인 도움을 받는 것이며,

and you've got to be able to raise awareness.

또한 사람들에게 널리 알려야 하는 것입니다.

And actually I could never raise awareness by myself, no matter what I'd achieved.

그리고 실제로 제가 어떤 성과를 올렸던 간에 널리 퍼뜨리는 일을 혼자서는 할 수 없었습니다.

So these guys were absolutely crucial.

그렇게 때문에 이러한 지지세력이 굉장히 중요한 것입니다.

So he said yes,

and we found ourselves in Afghanistan.

그리고 아프가니스탄에도 같이 가게되었습니다.

It was a really incredible thing that when we landed there,

우리가 그 곳에 간 사실은 정말 놀라운 일이었습니다.

I was talking to various people, and they were saying to me,

저는 다양한 사람들과 대화를 나눴고 그들은 저에게 이런 말을 했죠,

"You've got to get everybody involved here.

"당신은 이 곳에 있는 모든 이들이 참여하도록 만들어야 합니다.

You can't just expect it to work. You have to get out and work."

아무것도 하지 않고 이뤄지길 바라면 안됩니다. 나가서 행동으로 옮겨야합니다."

And we did, and we traveled around,

우린 그렇게 했고, 세계를 돌면서,

and we spoke to elders, we spoke to doctors, we spoke to nurses,

연륜이 있는 사람들과 대화를 나누고, 의사와 간호사와 얘기를 나눴습니다.

we held press conferences, we went out with soldiers,

우리는 기자회견을 마련했고, 군인들과 함께 시간을 보냈고,

we sat down with ISAF, we sat down with NATO,

ISAF(국제 안보 지원군)와 NATO(북대서양 조약기구)와 만남을 가졌습니다.

we sat down with the U.K. government.

또한 영국 정부와도 회담을 가졌습니다.

I mean, we basically sat down with everybody --

결국, 우리가 거의 모든 사람들과 소통을 한 것입니다.

in and out of schools with ministers of education,

학교내외에서 교육부 장관들과 함께,

holding these press conferences,

기자회견을 열었습니다.

which of course, now were loaded with press, everybody was there.

물론 수많은 언론을 포함한 모든 사람들이 참석했습니다.

There was an interest in what was going on.

무슨 일이 진행이 되고 있는지 관심이 쏠렸던 것이죠.

This amazing woman, Fatima Gailani, was absolutely instrumental in what went on

이 대단한 여성은, 파티마 마가라니(Fatima Magalani)입니다. 그녀는 일이 진행되는데에 있어 굉장히 중요한 역할을 했습니다.

as she was the spokesperson for the resistance against the Russians.

바로 러시아 레지스탕스의 대변인이었기 때문입니다.

And her Afghan network

그리고 그녀의 아프가니스탄 내에서의 인맥은

was just absolutely everywhere.

거의 모든 지역을 아울렀습니다.

And she was really crucial in getting the message in.

그녀는 저희의 메세지를 전달하는데에 있어 굉장히 중요한 역할을 했습니다.

And then we went home. We'd sort of done it.

그리고나서 우리는 집으로 돌아왔습니다. 말하자면 임무를 완수했던 것이죠.

We had to wait now and see what happened.

이제 기다리면서 어떤 일이 벌어질지 지켜볼 차례 였습니다.

And I got home,

집에 오고나서,

and I remember one of the team bringing in a letter to me

저에게 편지를 전해받았던 것을 기억했죠.

from the Taliban.

탈레반에서 온 편지였습니다.

And that letter basically said, "We'll observe this day.

그 편지에 이렇게 써있었습니다, "우리는 이 날을 지켜볼 것입니다.

We will observe this day.

우리는 이 날을 주목할 것입니다.

We see it as a window of opportunity.

우리는 이 날을 기회의 장으로 보고 있습니다.

And we will not engage. We're not going to engage."

하지만 우리는 개입하지 않을 것입니다. 개입은 절대 없을 것입니다."

And that meant that humanitarian workers

그 말인 즉슨 인도주의자들을

wouldn't be kidnapped or killed.

납치하거나 사살하지는 않겠다는 뜻이었습니다.

And then suddenly, I obviously knew at this point, there was a chance.

그리고나서 순식간에, 그 순간 명백한 사실을 깨달았죠. 가능성이 있다는 사실이었습니다.

And days later,

몇 일 후,

1.6 million children were vaccinated against polio

160만명의 아이들이 소아마비 백신을 맞게되었습니다.

as a consequence of everybody stopping.

모든 사람들이 폭력을 멈춘 결과였습니다.

And like the General Assembly,

그리고 유엔총회에서 느꼈던 것처럼,

obviously the most wonderful, wonderful moment.

가장 아름다운, 정말 너무나 아름다운 순간이었습니다.

And so then we wrapped the film up and we put it together

그렇게 우리는 영화를 마무리 짓고 한편으로 만들었습니다.

because we had to go back.

다시 돌아가야만 했기 때문입니다.

We put it into Dari and Pashto. We put it in the local dialects.

우리는 다리와 파시토 그리고 다른 지역 방언들도 넣었죠.

We went back to Afghanistan,

그리고 아프가니스탄으로 돌아왔습니다.

because the next year was coming, and we wanted to support.

다음해가 다가오고 있었고, 아프가니스탄을 지원하고 싶었기 때문입니다.

But more importantly, we wanted to go back,

하지만 가장 중요한 것은, 우리가 돌아오고 싶어했다는 것입니다.

because these people in Afghanistan were the heroes.

왜냐하면 아프가니스탄에서 도움을 준 이 모든 사람들이 영웅이었기 때문이죠.

They were the people who believed in peace

이들은 평화를 믿는 사람들이었습니다.

and the possibilities of it, etc., etc. -- and they made it real.

그리고 평화에 대한 가능성을 믿는 사람들이었죠. 그리고 실제로 이들은 현실로 이뤄냈습니다.

And we wanted to go back and show them the film

그리고 우리는 돌아와서 영화를 그들에게 보여주고

and say, "Look, you guys made this possible. And thank you very much."

이렇게 말하고 싶었습니다, "보십시오, 여러분들께서 이를 가능하게 만든것입니다. 너무나 감사드립니다."

And we gave the film over.

그리고 이 영화를 전했죠.

Obviously it was shown, and it was amazing.

영화가 상영되었고, 정말 감동적이었습니다.

And then that year, that year, 2008,

this ISAF statement from Kabul, Afghanistan, September 17th:

아프가니스탄 카불에서 9월 17일, ISAF측 발표에서

"General Stanley McChrystal,

"스탠리 맥그리스탈(Stanley McChrystal)사령관,

commander of international security assistance forces in Afghanistan,

즉 아프가니스탄의 국제안보지원 사령관은,

announced today ISAF will not conduct offensive military operations

ISAF에서 어떤 공격적인 군사활동도

on the 21st of September."

오늘 9월21일에는 실행하지 않을 것을 선언합니다."

They were saying they would stop.

그들은 군사훈련을 중단하겠다고 말했습니다.

And then there was this other statement

그리고나서 또 다른 발표가 있었습니다.

that came out from the U.N. Department of Security and Safety

바로 안전 보장 이사회로부터 나온 것이었죠.

saying that, in Afghanistan,

아프가니스탄에서,

because of this work,

이 날로 인해,

the violence was down by 70 percent.

폭력이 70퍼센트나 떨어졌다는 것입니다.

70 percent reduction in violence on this day at least.

적어도 이 날만큼은 폭력행위가 70퍼센트 떨어진 것입니다.

And that completely blew my mind

이 사실은 저를 너무나 놀라게 만들었죠.

almost more than anything.

그 어떤 것보다 말이죠.

And I remember being stuck in New York, this time because of the volcano,

당시 저는 뉴욕에 화산으로 인해 묶여 있었는데,

which was obviously much less harmful.

화산은 사실 그렇게 위험한 것은 아니지만요.

And I was there thinking about what was going on.

당시 아프가니스탄에서 어떤 일이 벌어진 건지 생각하고 있었습니다.

And I kept thinking about this 70 percent.

그리고 저는 계속 그 70퍼센트를 생각했죠.

70 percent reduction in violence --

폭력행위가 70퍼센트나 감소했다는 사실은,

in what everyone said was completely impossible

모든사람들이 이건 완전히 말이 안된다고

and you couldn't do.

당신은 절대 그렇게 할수 없다고 말해왔던 것이었죠.

And that made me think that, if we can get 70 percent in Afghanistan,

그리고 이 사실이 제가 이런 생각을 하게 만들었습니다, 만약 우리가 아프가니스탄에서 70퍼센트를 감소시켰다면,

then surely we can get 70 percent reduction everywhere.

확신컨데 다른 모든 곳에서도 70퍼센트의 감소를 얻어낼수 있을 것이라는 사실이었죠,

We have to go for a global truce.

우리는 전 세계적으로 전쟁을 멈춰야만 했습니다.

We have to utilize this day of ceasefire and nonviolence

우리는 휴전과 비폭력의 날을 활용해야했습니다.

and go for a global truce,

그리고 전세계의 정전을 이뤄내야했죠.

go for the largest recorded cessation of hostilities,

정전을 세계적인 규모로 이뤄내야 했습니다.

both domestically and internationally, ever recorded.

전례없는 규모로, 국내외에서 말이죠.

That's exactly what we must do.

바로 이것이 우리가 해야만 하는 일이었습니다.

And on the 21st of September this year,

올해 9월 21일에,

we're going to launch that campaign at the O2 Arena

우리는 이 운동을 02 아레나(대형 경기장)에서 시행하고자했습니다.

to go for that process,

이러한 과정을 진행시키기위해서였고

to try and create the largest recorded cessation of hostilities.

또한 대규모의 정전을 이루어내기 위해서였습니다.

And we will utilize all kinds of things --

우리는 이 모든 것을 활용할 것입니다.

have a dance and social media

춤이나 소셜 미디어나

and visiting on Facebook and visit the website, sign the petition.

페이스 북이나 웹사이트를 방문하거나 청원서에 서명을 하는 것을 포함해서 말입니다.

And it's in the six official languages of the United Nations.

그리고 평화의 날은 유엔국의 6가지 공식 언어로 진행됩니다.

And we'll globally link with government, inter-government,

또한 우리는 정부와 , 정부 부속 단체들과 국제적으로 협력할 것이며,

non-government, education, unions, sports.

비정부단체와, 교육, 여러 연합들, 스포츠도 포함될 것입니다.

And you can see the education box there.

We've got resources at the moment in 174 countries

trying to get young people to be the driving force

behind the vision of that global truce.

바로 세계적인 정전이라는 비젼을 위해서 였죠.

And obviously the life-saving is increased, the concepts help.

그리고 실제로 생명을 구하는 비율이 늘어났습니다. 이러한 개념이 도움이 된것이죠.

Linking up with the Olympics --

그리고 올림픽과도 연계했습니다.

I went and saw Seb Coe. I said, "London 2012 is about truce.

저는 셉 코(Seb Coe)를 만나러 갔습니다. 그리고 이렇게 전했습니다,"2012 런던 올림픽은 정전에 대한 것입니다.

Ultimately, that's what it's about."

궁극적으로, 정전과 관련된 것입니다."

Why don't we all team up? Why don't we bring truce to life?

함께 해보시지 않겠습니까? 정전을 현실화 시켜보는 것이 어떨런지요?

Why don't you support the process of the largest ever global truce?

대대적으로, 세계적으로 전쟁을 막기 위한 지원을 해주시지 않겠습니까?

We'll make a new film about this process.

We'll utilize sport and football.

On the Day of Peace, there's thousands of football matches all played,

from the favelas of Brazil to wherever it might be.

브라질의 빈민지역에서부터 모든 곳을 아우를 것입니다.

So, utilizing all of these ways

to inspire individual action.

And ultimately, we have to try that.

We have to work together.

And when I stand here in front of all of you,

I was with Brahimi, Ambassador Brahimi.

I think he's one of the most incredible men

제 생각에 그는 가장 놀라운 사람 중 한 명이 아닐 까 싶습니다.

in relation to international politics -- in Afghanistan, in Iraq.

아프가니스탄과 이라크에서 국제 정치 관계에 대한 것이라면 말이죠.

He's an amazing man.

그 분은 정말 놀라운 분 입니다.

And I sat with him a few weeks ago.

그리고 몇 주전 저는 그와 함께 대화를 나눴습니다.

And I said to him, "Mr. Brahimi, is this nuts, going for a global truce?

그리고 이렇게 말했죠. "브라히미씨, 세계적 정전을 이뤄내는 것이 말도 안되는 일일까요?

Is this possible? Is it really possible that we could do this?"

이것이 가능할까요? 우리가 정말 이 일을 할 수 있다는 것이 가능할까요?"

He said, "It's absolutely possible."

그러자 그가 이렇게 대답하더군요. "분명히 가능성이 있습니다."

I said, "What would you do?

그래서 또 물었죠, "당신이라면 어떻게 하실 건가요?

Would you go to governments and lobby and use the system?"

정부와 단체들에게 가서 조직적인 방식으로 다가가실 건가요?"

He said, "No, I'd talk to the individuals."

그러자, "아뇨. 저는 개개인과 얘기를 나눌 것입니다." 라고 대답했죠.

It's all about the individuals.

모든 것은 바로 개인 한명한명이 이루어내는 것입니다.

It's all about you and me.

바로 여러분과 제가 이뤄낼 수 있는 것이죠.

It's all about partnerships.

이 모든 것이 협력으로 이루어 지는 것입니다.

It's about your constituencies; it's about your businesses.

여러분의 협력과 관심으로 이뤄내는 것입니다.

Because together, by working together,

왜냐하면 함께, 다 함께 하는 것이,

I seriously think we can start to change things.

바로 제가 생각하기에 변화를 이루어내는 출발점이기 때문입니다.

And there's a wonderful man sitting in this audience, and I don't know where he is,

그리고 지금 여기 계신 분 중 놀라운 한 분이 계십니다, 그 분이 어디 앉아계신지는 모릅니다만,

who said to me a few days ago -- because I did a little rehearsal --

몇 일전 저에게 이런 말씀을 하신 분이죠. 잠깐 리허설을 할때였습니다.

and he said, "I've been thinking about this day

"저는 이 날을 기다려왔습니다.

and imagining it as a square

그리고 이 날을 큰 네모가

with 365 squares,

365개의 칸으로 나눠진 거라고 상상해보세요,

and one of them is white."

그 중 한 칸만이 환한 날입니다."

And it then made me think about a glass of water, which is clear.

이 말은 깨끗한 한 잔의 물을 떠올리게 해주었습니다.

If you put one drop,

여러분이 만약 한 방울을 떨어뜨린다면,

one drop of something, in that water,

무언가 한 방울을 물에 떨어뜨리면,

it'll change it forever.

영구적인 변화를 가져올 것입니다.

By working together, we can create peace one day.

함께 함으로써, 우리는 평화의 날을 이뤄낼 수 있습니다.
